Another tourist attack

There has been another attack on tourists, according to a visiting couple from Britain.

A tourist has been telling local radio station Q95, that his wife and himself were attacked by an unknown assailant, as they returned from dinner and were heading back to a guest house at Goodwill where they have been for the past eight days.

According to the victim, the attacker knocked both himself and his wife to the ground, and attempted to grab his bag.

The Briton says he refused to let go of the bag, and was dragged along, with his arm injured, forcing him to later seek treatment at the Princess Margaret Hospital.

The police are said to be aware of the attack and are investigating the matter.

The tourist says he came to Dominica for the carnival and for his daughter’s wedding, and reports having had a good time in the Nature Isle until the attack.

He has appealed for the return of his camera which was in the bag taken by the assailant.

At the end of the day, the DOMINICAN authorities are not doing their jobs. What are the police officers doing? partaking in crime?
what are the politicians doing? partaking in crime. Society with no pride and moral degradation cannot be deserving of financial merits. Tourist advisories should be made in other countries against our nature island!

My daughter and I went to Dominica 4 years ago. We felt so welcome and safe. Looks like things have changed in that short time. Dominicans, don’t let a few people ruine your beautiful island. Work together and stop this crime. It is not too late.

I have been hearing a lot about the recent crime increase being a result of prisoners being released or escaping….is there any truth in this and if so what exactly is going on?

Man a bag and a stupid camera can be replaced.I am sure that your daughter has pics that you and duplicate.Your reaction almost cost you your life and maybe if the person was armed with a knife..it would have cost you your hand,… playing tug of war with the assailant.Give them want they want …they will be caught, trust me .You are in Dominica – someone must talk

      March 4, 2012

The problem is that nobody does talk anymore and it seems as though lawlessness goes unpunished. What Is the deterrent for crimes like this? Have any of the crimes that have been committed against tourists on Batibou or any crime other than the murder of the Irish man ever been solved? Maybe tourists should just travel to Dominica and just start handing out cameras and other items to criminals. The problems is that if it was just petty theft, it would not be that much of a problem. It is obviously more than that now. These crimes are not being solved and they are becoming more violent because of that. If the Police or even the local people accept things the way they are then these crimes are inevitable and will continue to get worse. Please come together to stop this. There is so much a community can accomplish if everyone comes together for the future of Dominica. Yes, it might be difficult to solve a single crime if happens, but a lot of these crimes are happening at the same place, sometimes multiple times a week. Yes, you can say, stay away from these places because the Police can’t be everywhere, but are there really that many different places that the crimes are happening? You tell me, because maybe I am unaware of other things that are happening. The solution is simple and not complicated. It is your choice to choose your destiny. I know what my community would do, especially if we had the potential that Dominica does. Any crime is unacceptable. But it seems as though this is not the case to some people. This deeply saddens me. I pray especially for the French family attacked on Batibou, but also for all of the other tourists that have had bad experiences in this beautiful Country. I anxiously wait for the capture of all of these criminals.

I’am one of the German tourists who were brutally knocked down with stones and robbed at Salisbury on Feb., 11th. Me and my wife have left the hospital in Germany now but we will suffer from our injuries for many more months. We have reported the incident to the German police. The officer said that our police would investigate this case as attempted murder with huge effort. Is Dominica police doing the same? Do they have the resources needed to catch criminals? Are they willing to do so? Do the Dominicans support their police? Do they tell them, if someone wants to sell stolen goods? For example the Canon Powershot S95 camera or the Samsung Galaxy S2 cellphone that was taken from us? Meanwhile the Federal Foreign Office of Germany says on it’s website that violent felony is increasing in Dominica. This will definitly deter tourists from visiting Dominica. I’m so sad for the people of Dominica who are honest and willing to work for their living for example in the tourist industry. We had such a pleasant time on Dominica before the attack, met so many lovely people – these bastards are bringing You down – all of You. Dominica still has a chance – stop these criminals – anyone is in charge!

Some time back persons held up a but carrying tourist to a historic site.. took personal effects and cash. The PM, Minister of Toursim, Police and the Army came out in numbers, the community was notified, police presence were all over and apology on the radio like joke. What is happening in DA, i have not heard a word from the PM, the Minister far less for the Police Chief… if they did … we out there have not heard. The crimes and attacks continues on the Nature ilse…. what is the Govt., Police, Minister doing and saying. I am concerned and really feels bad to hear and see what is going on. DOMINICA …. Carnival cruise ship passengers robbed in Mexico

    February 27, 2012 5:34 AM

Police in Mexico are looking for bandits who reportedly robbed 22 Carnival cruise ship passengers on a day trip. John Blacksone reports. Also, CBS News travel editor Peter Greenberg speaks about the recent line of cruise ship security issues.

Twenty-two passengers traveling on a Carnival cruise ship for the trip of a lifetime instead got the scare of a lifetime when they were robbed at gunpoint while on an excursion in the Mexican resort town of Puerto Vallarta.

The passengers were robbed Thursday during a guided trail excursion while on a seven-day cruise aboard the Carnival Splendor, the Miami-based cruise line confirmed in a statement released Saturday.

No one was injured and the guests returned safely to the ship, according to Carnival, which did not provide any further details of the robbery except to say the company is assisting guests to reimburse them for lost valuables.

“Carnival sincerely apologizes to its guests for this very unfortunate and disturbing event and is providing its full support and assistance,” the company said in the statement.

The 3,006-passenger ship departed from the port of Long Beach Feb. 19 for a seven-day Mexican Riviera cruise that included a stop in Cabo San Lucas as well as Puerto Vallarta, according to the ship’s online itinerary.

The cruise line has suspended the nature trail tour where the robbery occurred, one of about 35 excursions the ship offers passengers while docked in Puerto Vallarta, according to the Carnival website.

The U.S. State Department two weeks ago issued a travel warning to Americans to avoid unnecessary travel to 14 Mexican states because of increased violence in the country. Included in the list is the state of Jalisco, of which Puerto Vallarta is one of the largest cities.

The Los Angeles Times cites Mexican newspapers in reporting that hooded gunmen intercepted the tourists’ bus about 5 p.m. Thursday as it returned from the pueblo of El Nogalito. The gunmen took cameras, money

Please Dominicans do not bite the hands that feed you, all have to come together to denounce what is taking place on the island, we do not want this to happen in DA, because if tourist gone and investors pull out of DA, that is for our Nature Isle of the Caribbean

So it goes, First decision that agriculture was not the main industry in Dominica. It is The tourist industry that will take us to the next level. Now you see all this violence will take you to another next level, not only poverty but starvation. No one wants to plant food to eat, they want to steal money to buy it. When the people with money stop coming then, you will see a level of Dominica. When that happens, all these big houses you see going up (magically, in 17 constituencies)better have really good security and a few cid working for them, because they will be the only targets left. SMH Dominica used to be such and amazing place.

Young Dominicans are the ones committing these crimes….not foreigners and not aliens.

The police cannot do it all, they need the cooperation of the entire country to bring these young thugs to swift justice. If we get black listed as a travel destination, all of us are going to pay the price. Not just the police, not just Skerrit and not just Edison. Therefore, we all have to get involved.

I was home for carnival 2012 and I got the impression that we are beginning to be afraid of these young undesirables. My wife was knocked down on Carnival Monday night by three young men on motorbikes just driving with a willful and wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property. It happened just after the New Bridge on the Potterville side and there were more than 50 people or so waiting for buses at that location. After helping up my wife, I was prevented by all three of them from photographing their bikes by pushing and shoving me. I was not successful and they eventually left. However, what was very sickening and disturbing is that not one person came to our assistance or even made a phone call to the police.

If we don’t do anything to assist in preventing and deterring crime; the criminals are going to get bolder and crime will become more prevalent in our society. There is just too much politicking. These young hoodlums are our problem; not Skerrit, not Edison, not Q95 and not DBS. We need to focus all of attention on this problem and take some very drastic measures right now!

Then they came for the trade unionists,
        and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews,

Most of what you’re saying I agree with, but relating the major rise in crime between summer of last year to now to ‘young people’ is also really bad. It is terrible.
What age group do you consider ‘young’? Which crimes do the ‘young’ people commit the most? What can be done to stop the ‘young’ people from committing more crimes?
It is ridiculous to me that sure an otherwise well written comment can begin with such a degrading flaw.

This comment is surrendered by someone who along with his many friends could be considered a ‘young’ Dominican.

I feel your pain brother as an EX-cop I saw that happening and it hurts to the core to see it not being adress I am willing to come back and work for free if that is what it takes to clean the place up for Law abding citizens and visitors alike. I do not have to worry about being transferred to behind God`s back as it is being feared by my serving police friends nor do i have to be afraid of not being reported to the politicians I will never forget my first ticket right out of training school was issued to a former minister who now lives at Wotton Waven he goes by the name of mr H G” up to this day he never forget that cause during his stint in Government he thought he was above the law but i told him that I am a policeman who took the oath to up hold the law and no one is above the law. Well for your information, there are many more incidents of crime that are not being reported and even several others where no reports are being made cause some people are of the view, the police do nothing, so why make a report. It is paramount that people are aware of these incidents so they can take precautions, be observant and vigilant.

Something really needs to be done…The Police have a database of all the criminals with photos? They should invest in that, so anyone who commits a crime take photos and full description and information so when something happens somewhere they can filter and based on information be able to make some in-roads. But these guys need to be dealt with before it gets more out of hand. Also people who are aware needs Police confidence also so they can pass information to them. We need to have our Police men get some more regional or international training to deal with this problem, it wont hurt the country one bit but help make us safer. And whoever is in charge of our laws must look to review them and make adjustments so when those guys are caught they will be dealt with severely.

I think that it’s more than “lack of work” causing young men to do these types of crimes. If, for example, we had 5 more off-shore call centres would these criminal types be the ones working there? Probably not. A lot has to do with the following: (1) compromised personal values (2) the “easy money” attitude of the young men, (3) plentiful opportunities to perpetrate these crimes due to little or no police presence (4) inadequate investigative resources at the police force (5) an education system that fails to educate those who aren’t “academically inclined”. There are more but I will stop here.

I have been living here 3 years, and not only did we have to supply confirmation from the Head of Police in England (where records are accurate and computerised), we have to follow this up with annual reports from our local police station which have to be handed to the CID in Roseau. Any minor infringement of Dominican law means we are kicked out of the country – this is made very clear. Thus we could possibly lose our house or land. Plus, we have to give annual statements of financial independence.
Additionally, do you really think that Non-Dominicans are going round attacking tourists with cutlasses and rocks?? Stealing cameras and phones which we already have? Robbing Western Union? Or are responsible for the rape of the teenage girl? Surely the accent and skin colour would be a bit of a give-away?
Trust me, this problem does not lie with those of us who have chosen Dominica as our adopted Country, and still, in spite of the recent unsolved criminal activity, feel blessed to live here.

Not everyone that migrate to DA is rich and honest or have an accent or different skin colour. SOME ARE THIVES AND MURDERERS…..

when will a petition start for the resignation of the police commissioner… oh how these guys are lucky… because only in places like dominica can they still keep that position…. u have to squeeze the top for the bottom to release ‘results’….

Very brave of you to admit that.

That is the thing is it not? We all say nothing … and yet we all cry plenty.

Why do we ‘enable’ (by not reporting them and so they do more crime) these crimes?

Anyway THIS is the reason our country is slowly going to hell.

The Police and PM may be at fault too … but at the end of the day this is what is truly wrong.

Damn shame, Dominica is already suffering economically, these thugs need to STOP this insanity before they cripple the economy further, the gov has to step up I remember what tourist attack did to the economy in Miami, that’s all I’m saying!

Its high time the police get upgraded and do something about these attacks on our economy (whether indirectly or directly) These persons are never caught and no leads. First does the police have a database where everyone who comes in are being logged in the database with fingerprints and pictures and there crimes? So when something lie this happen they can narrow there “guesses”? Why can the police CHIEF ask for regional or international training or help in this department? Dont try to make us believe that you all can do the job no offense but you all cant, technology and criminals advancing our laws and police ways of working still the same. How are they expected to achieve. Almost all companies to stay in business and take advantage of opportunities, get upgraded and trained. This thing needs to stop, and its always some camera involved…….PLEASE POLICE…do something. You all need international or regional intervention in crime fighting training.. I know you cant be everywhere but we need some break-through in these crimes against our people and tourists.

I don’t think the lack of information the local police has on foreigners is the issue at hand. It is the Dominicans committing crimes against each other and against visitors to the island. At least when they contain their acts to each other the tourist industry is less affected. But as these attack escalate against tourists, students, and business investors, people with the ability to improve the economy and bring money into the island will shy away from an already unattractive option.

    Less work = more crime
I think we need more offshore companies in Dominica to create more employment.
More banks more Call Centres, MORE ANYTHING. there’s not enough money flowing here. I feel so sad everytime I read one of these stories as this is not the country I know and have grown up in. Also I feel if the government is going to take a “Loan” for a project then more Dominican’s should be employed as it is we who have to pay it back. Even if not in supervisor roles but in the basic roles. If we’re given a grant then no problem but once it’s a loan then it should be us to benefit. People cannot give us loans only to technically keep the money for themselves and still make us pay them.

I agree that less work = more crime, but in addition to your suggestion about basic roles for workers, what about the government making a deal that Dominican workers get trained by the foreigners if no suitably qualified Dominicans are available for more important roles. That way more well-trained Dominicans will be available for future projects.

Also, I think Dominicans need to develop some of their own industries, e.g. Dominicans are great at agriculture and the Caribbean produces some of the best food in the world. People all over the world are starting to “go organic” with their food and they don’t mind paying the proper price for organic food production. If Dominicans tap into this market then farmers would not have to compete with those huge agricompanies that use all kinds of questionable technologies to produce foods of questionable nutritional value. Dominica should get into organic food agriculture. Also, Dominicans can produce value added organic food products for export e.g. juices, jams, snacks etc.

Young people should be reminded that there is no shame in doing agriculture as a career. Lots of people in other countries wish they could have food growing in their backyards to save them some money every month, and to work from home instead of doing 9-5 for some horrible boss – that is bliss!

Dominicans could also consider starting small tourism oriented businesses all over the island e.g. local restaurants serving uniquely Dominican food, little snack places, art galleries, theatres, eco-based inns or bed and breakfasts plus guided nature tours, boat rides, for tourists and locals.

Also maybe focus on the local market too not just tourists: start local entertainment for young people to keep them busy e.g gaming/pool hall/bowling alley/table tennis/ sports centres. Young people should also be invited to participate in community improvement projects e.g. Get together and build a community centre or do volunteer work to help the elderly or disabled – this will instill some civic pride and a sense of belonging and make people less likely to commit crimes.

There are also lots of things that could be done with the internet and technology e.g. local websites and cell phone apps to help people get around the island, shop etc.

It’s not always about getting foreign investment, sometimes we need to create our own opportunities locally!

      Just a few ideans.
      Peace and Love to all

One more thing: more family-oriented businesses and entertainment might help to instill good family values in the youth and help them to focus on settling down in life the right way instead of running around causing trouble.

People keep saying crime is not as bad here as it is on other islands or the US, but given there is only 70K people, the crime per person is very high, especially since ite underreported and it is ridiculously high especially if you are a targeted tourist or foregneir living here…especially robberies with violence. please keep up the reporting so the DPF gets the message they need to take action. For every ten robberies i hear about, only one gets reported. ahhh, i’m getting off this Island, its not what it used to be with all theese deportees and life criminals, they are taking over, i cant go to the beaches i used to take my family to because i’m not a local and there have been horrible crimes at each one, i can’t enjoy the nature isle any more when i have to look out for masked men wanting to theive and rape…, im out.

The crime rate in dominica is much higher than in the usa.The usa is very big and dominica is very small.Four attacks on tourists in less than a month, that’s scearing the tourists away. Some may want to bite my head off but since this new government come in power the crime has sky rocketed.

Something needs to be done as a matter of extreme urgency; these attacks need to stop since the end result is the crippling of an already infant Tourism industry and the loss of revenue by those who depend on it for a livelihood. THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS…these young men need to find constructive work and the police force needs to do what it takes to bring a stop to these malicious incidents which will damage the already fragile reputation of this Small Vulnerable Economy!!!

I cannot embrace tourism at the expense of agriculture. You are asking me to worry about survival everytime the tourist season is closed?
I would love if we could focus on both agriculture and tourism as our economic pillars.

Crime, political instability, fuel shortages, are just some of the many factors that negatively influence tourism.

While agriculture is far more stable, our own people prefer to eat and drink imports. what a pity!

Can anyone explain to me how we will employ the next batch of school leavers come summertime? The tourism industry?

In Decenber 2005 My wife was attacked in in the Botanical Gardens and was very badly hurt. She spent a week in Princess Margaret Hospital and further 5 weeks in a Uk hospital. She is now permanatly disabled. In total she has had 8 operations on her leg.Though we have been back to Domanical on 2 occasions for the trial of the 4 youths who were accused of the assult, traval and accomodation paid by your Goverment,my wife has reseived no compensation for her injurys. To add insult to injury only one of the four accused was sent to prison for 4 years the others were let off. On our last return in 2006 I was robbed on the road outside of one of the large hotels. Not a very good advert for Dominica. When asked about the island I have to say it can be very dangerous. I am sad to say that but it is the truth.
