Antigua police say murder investigations nearing end

Alwin Robin and Alix Riviere were shot execution style in Antigua

Antigua Police have expressed optimism that investigations into the double killing of Alwin Robin and Alix Riviere could soon come to an end.

Although no arrests have been made in the matter, head of the strategic communications department of the Royal Antigua Police force, Inspector William Holder, told Dominica News Online that they are pleased with the progress of the investigation.

While declining to give any details, he said the investigation is at a critical stage.

“As you would understand we can’t reveal any information that could jeopardize the case but what I can tell you is that the investigation is at a critical stage and when we think it is appropriate we will inform the media houses and the nation as to our findings,” Holder said on Tuesday.

Two retired police officers who had been arrested and charged in connection with 35 kilos of cocaine that were reportedly found in the house where the two Dominicans were killed, remain in custody.

No connections have been made between the drugs and the killings, police said.

The bodies of Riviere and Robin were found on October 4 in an area called Cedar Valley. Both men were shot execution style.

ARE YOU SERIOUS? You are pleased with the progress of the investigation although NO ARRESTS have been made in the matter. WHAT PROGRESS? The people in custody is there because of the drugs and not the MURDER. Come on, what more do you need?

God isn’t a police, and I know that Alix’s death won’t go in vain….he wan’t into anything illegal, no matter what people may think or say…being friends with someone who’s alleged to be involved in illegal matter(s) doesn’t mean you’re automatically involved.
To the D/cans who continue to write words to th effect that Alix deserved the death he reeived, woe be unto you!…..judge not…especially when you don’t know the one being judged.
God knows, most of us don’t get what we deserve at all!!!

” Francisco, it was a long time since the then government of Dominica brought in Detective Slater of Barbados and if I recall Scotland Yard when there was a fateful carnival fire in Roseau, King George V Street, near Great George Street.

Acid was thrown on the intended victim.

I remember the fire set on Carnival revelers in the 1950’s, I was a young lad then, nevertheless, I recall the incident, and name one in the person of Martin who was burnt, that Martin I believe to be the brother of my friend Athie Martin, I hope I am not wrong.

Anyway, in the 1550’s we were still a colony of Grate Britain, the chief of police was an English man, some of us may remember the highest ranking local officer was Francis, Inspector Francis, and the turmoil of the day, Francis eventually became chief for a brief period, before he went into oblivion ( and I mean retired here); he lived in Potters Ville on the corner next to the Roman Catholic Church.

I gave that back ground so that you know that I know what I am talking about: with that said I will suggest the efforts of bringing Scotland Yard into Dominica to investigate the carnival fire, and murder, was not done by the will of any Dominican legislator at that time.

It is important to note that the British had an ” administrator ” residing in Dominica in government house, who may have requested that Scotland Yard be brought in by the British government to resolve that issue. Now as for the guy from Barbados, I cannot comment on that because without you bringing him to my attention I had no knowledge of that incident.

However, I suggest that the authorities in Dominica seems reluctant to engage the FBI and organizations such as Scotland Yard for all the reasons I have suggested on numerous occasions. The fact is we need the services of Scotland Yard, or the FBI in Dominica urgently in order to help capture the many murderers we have walking the streets of Dominica.

I would like the murderer or murderers of my nephew caught and brought to justice.

By the way, I never understood why all the other colonies in the Caribbean had an ” Governor ” except Dominica where the British was represented by a ” administrator ” can anyone explain that?

      Francisco

I did not want to mention names of those who died in the Carnival fire. Since you did, at least one, he was Eddie Martin, the youngest. Such a nice person. Would you believe that morning after I left my cousin’s home, I saw him and spoke to him. He had a camera and he took a picture of me. He played in the band “Vauxhall Harmonicats.” He was an excellent guitarist and was called “Eddie Guitar”. His coffin was made in the shape of a guitar.
The other one was George James. Strange too, that morning while I was at my cousin’s home, he visited and said to me, “I have not seen you for a while.” I recall my cousin gave him a drink. I left my cousin’s home to return home and this was when I saw Eddie Martin.
The other one was Eric Shillingford, as we heard, the intended victim. I will end this here.
I recall Sergeant Francis. You are correct where he lived near the Catholic Pottersville Church.
I have no idea why Dominica had an administrator and not a governor. We accepted it then. You have opened my eyes to it and I, too, would like to know. I could ask a few people who are older than I but they are in Dominica. They were all civil servants, now retired. I wonder if they will know. It would be interesting to know. I will ask them. Who knows? Someone may read your comments and will comment.
I just thought, I wonder if Lennox Honeychurch who is a historian will know about that? He could shed some light on it.
I was not aware that Robin was your cousin. Please accept my sympathy. I remember a Miss Robin who worked at the Green’s Dispensary. She later married and opened her own drug store in King George V Street; since departed. She was a wonderful, pleasant lady, always jovial. She was well known in Roseau.
When I read that this Robin died, I mentioned it to a few people and told them that he must have been related to her since she was from Marigot.
Francisco, I have ties in Wesley dating back, way back when. :) People from that area are very dear to my heart.
Last year I attended a funeral in Toronto of someone who was from Marigot. I met quite a few of them, some whom I knew in Dominica and some whom I did not know then but met a few of them here.
Hope the murderers will be caught. It hurts my heart to know what happened to them. Let us pray to God to help that the murderers are caught. Know that they will not escape the wrath and judgment of God. Their goose is cooked as the saying goes. They brought this upon themselves.
      God bless you!

      • November 23, 2012

The Robin guy I was told we may have some family connection via the village of Marigot, as you may know everybody in the Villages of Marigot and Wesley seems to be related; However his wife grandfather, and my mother were brother, and sister.

The government minister Gloria Dodds (Dods) Shillingford farther would be his wife uncle also, he was one of six brothers, and my mother was the only girl among them.

One of my sisters went to Antigua to attend Robin funeral.

Our country do have some sad history, it is time our government and people do something about all of the unsolved murders we have in the country.

I appreciate the information you shed on the incidents of so long ago, when something happens in our country you never know who is affected by it until we get into a situation like this where we have the opportunity to communicate.

        Thanks for sharing!

people keep forgetting one major clue: Alix was at his work site when he received a phone call and left his coworkers and never returned. Alix either knew his killers or it was Alwin who called him. either way dem fellas knew their killers so this is not likely any “mistaken identity” story.

The call could be traced either way. Antigua police should have the expertise to do so.

This is why by instinct I have sincere empathy for them and to sympathize with their family. I do not think they were bad people to that extent to get murdered. Let the family and others as us console ourselves that God knows who the murderers are. We are anxious for them to be caught. They will try to hide from the earthly Law but not the Heavenly Law. Woe to them! This is how I feel whenever I hear people are murdered in any part of the world, be it through terrorism, especially if it concerns fellow Dominicans and if the murderers were not caught. One day they will bear the consequences of their evil actions in eternity.

We do not know what really happened. We should not speculate or make rash judgments. To me it is a big mystery why they were murdered. Why they? Both of them? Until I hear further, I will not judge or condemn them. I will live and let live.
What I do know and feel is that it saddens me that two lives were taken. Absolutely no one has a right to kill anyone.

antigua police force is no different from dominica police force. doe matter how long it takes we will/must find the killer/s.

    • November 21, 2012

In any event, the Antigua Police force does not hesitate to seek outside help when they are confronted with difficult cases and investigations.

That is why the Police, and government of Antigua has brought in the British Scotland Yard detectives to help investigate the crime and in order to capture the murders so that they cannot continue to kill.

When last have you heard the government of Dominica engages the services of any FBI, or Scotland Yard to help capture the many criminals at large in Dominica, killing people at random, even one of my nephew was murdered in Wesley, and his murderer might even be a police, still on the force.

I will be happy when they get the killers in Antigua, because one of the murdered from Marigot, was married to a relative of mine, she is the daughter of the late James Dods of Wesley, She is Gloria Dods Shillingford niece too!

As I said the police authorities in Dominica avoids outside experts in criminal investigation to come and help because they know the people who are involved, and in order that people in high place be sighted and arrested they prefer to allow the criminals to walk free and continue to reek havoc in the place.

Francisco, it was a long time since the then government of Dominica brought in Detective Slater of Barbados and if I recall Scotland Yard when there was a fateful carnival fire in Roseau, King George V Street, near Great George Street. Acid was thrown on the intended victim.
I was quite young then. I witnessed that fire. That carnival Monday afternoon a band was coming down the road. It was hot, hot, hot! :) There were a lot of revelers enjoying themselves. A few of us were about to join it but we decided to wait until it came closer. Our favorite spot would be near the band, in front, behind it or on the sides since it was a safer spot not to be pushed around. Other areas in the band were rough. :) We stood on the steps in front of Dr. Watty’s office on King George V St., waiting for the band to approach. As if by instinct we decided to go inside the McIntyre’s home, next to Dr. Watty’s office on King George V St. and stood on the balcony; fortunate for us. We were chatting with some people while viewing the band and waiting for it to approach when soon after there was fire and chaos. People were screaming, crying and running all over the place. I was shocked and mesmerized and kept repeating, “How could anyone do something like that?” We remained there until the street was cleared. That was the end of carnival enjoyment for me. Most people did not participate in carnival the following day. The following day, Carnival Tuesday, we attended the funeral of the youngest person whom I knew very well who got burnt in that fire. This had a great effect on me. I have not forgotten that day. If I say more it will take much longer.
I knew all three of the young men who got burnt and eventually died. They were older than I. They were together in the band. One died the same day in the hospital. The other two died in Jamaica where they were sent for treatment and returned home for burial. I attended the funerals. Those three weeks of different funerals were extremely sad ones for Dominicans, the victims’ family and also the people of Roseau and Goodwill. This brings back sad memories, with tears in my eyes.
Others were injured; burnt. I recall one young man’s face was burnt. He is disfigured. Some years after, I visited N.Y. and attended a Dominican dance. He was at the dance. I said hello to him.
Are you aware of this fire? All Dominicans who were of especially the age of reason, teenagers and older ones would remember it. Yet, the perpetrators were never brought to justice. I believe that at least one, the alleged perpetrator was questioned by the Court. There was a lot of speculation at that time.
Some Dominicans had a good idea about the reason for this atrocity and who was the main perpetrator. I knew the suspected persons. I had heard some people mentioned their names. Some Dominicans would know who they were.
In the end, this specific person, the perpetrator was like a dog on the street and died that way. I saw him on the street when I had once visited for carnival. Actually I did not recognize him but a friend pointed him out to me. He was a pathetic sight. I could not believe that one who was so prominent would become such a person, a drunkard and pauper. As for the others, they are also dead.
There is no doubt that God dealt with each and everyone of them. Under no circumstances – “Thou shalt not kill.” None will escape our Just God.

no connections have been made between the drugs and the killings…. hhmmmm so does it mean that peeps who were saying that this massive amount of drugs were allegedly planted… could have been right all along?… or were the drugs in the possession of Alwin and he was killed out of grudge?… Alwin was killed about a day n a half after news came from St. Maarteen giving praise to his sound system… and that the people of St. Maarteen would want no less quality than that of Alwin’s sound system… could this hit be something more… maybe not cause of drugs but cause of ‘legitimate’ business… the result of venturing in the space of other business men?

we may never know… cause the two police men will never talk… i doubt they’ll spill the beans and knowing how corrupt the system in Antigua is, it’s not impossible the authorities did away with critical info that would have aided the guys from Scotland Yard…

    • Reflection

I too believe that this could be nothing more than a “territorial” killing due to the prior activities in St. Maarten, but made to look drug related. Let the investigations continue and hopefully the truth (whatever it is) will come forth and end in airtight convictions.

Strange isn’t it? If the policemen do not talk while they are alive, I hope they will talk and deux parlez when they are dying. Some do. They cannot take the heat of the fires of Hell when they are dying, knowing what lies ahead for them for all eternity and so they cannot help themselves but talk as a mark of regret.
I heard of two cases (there may be more) when people deux parlez on their death bed.
I am repeating as always, “It is better to do good than evil. Far better.” No one escapes God’s just punishment.
