Antiguan ex-cops get bail

Alwin Robin and Alix Riviere were shot execution style in Antigua

Two Antiguan ex-police officers facing 15 money-laundering and drug trafficking offences linked to the murder of two Dominicans on that island are out on bail.

Antigua media reports indicate that Arleigh Byer and Cosbert Sergeant met their bail conditions on Christmas Eve.

The court accepted cash, property and other equipment put up by independent persons.

As condition of bail both men were required not to hold title of any of the properties or have interest in them.

The men were charged for possession of 35 kilos of cocaine, but were unable to come up with the $100,000 cash deposit of the $1.2-million bail. The cash component was later cut in half, according to reports.

The two also appeared in court on December 20 on money laundering charges and were granted bail in the sum of $800,000 with a cash deposit of $200,000.

Antigua police report that the cocaine was found in a house where Alwin Robin and Alix Riviere were found dead last year. Both were shot execution style.

Antigua media is reporting that the ex-policemen were custodian of the property where the bodies of two Dominicans were found.

The police have made no connections between the cocaine and the murders.

All matters have been adjourned until February 25.

This thing is a whole convoluted mess that it seems there will be no resolution for. My prayers are with the family that they find some form of closure and semblance of peace.

just to remind everybody who is keeping score in this case.

    (1) homeowner is Jamal Kane who was charged with money laundering

    (2) former police officers Arleigh Byer and Cosbert Sergeant who were charged with money laundering and drug trafficking

    (3) Kergus Martin and Kenroy Marshall, escapees and alleged killers of ALix and ALwin.

so let me get this straight. i state facts rather than opinion (see above) and receive a thumbs down? lol!

    • January 4, 2013

I think the homeowner and the former police officers charged with money laundering and drug trafficking, and the escapees are all alleged killers of Alix and Alwin. I think they are all involved in one way or the other.

These guys should not granted bail due to the fact that the drug they are connected with was found where the two guys were found dead.

WOW!! I thought these Police Officers were part and parcel of upholding the law and order in the country. How sad, Good for the investigating team who caught them. May justice now prevail and may the convicted face the death penalty just as they inflicted on the two Dominicans.
Let the lesson be taught to all that when you live by the sword, you die by the sword, no mercy should be given to them.

    Our interpretation of natural justice;

    – Poor and without connections: Jail!
    – Rich and/or with connections: Bail!

One law for the rich, another for the poor. We are rejecting Privy Council for CCJ but one thing they have in England. “Legal Aid”, enshrined in law for those who cannot afford a professional defence by their own means.

By not connecting the cocaine with the murders, eventhough, the accused were custodian of the property where the bodies were found is very troubling. But again, these ex-cops got unprecedented support from the unknown to escape before they decided to turn themselves in, speaks volumes of what’s to come of this case. There may never be justice for the execution style murder of our countrymen. Sounds like a movie in the making eh.

Check the names. They are not the same guys who escaped upon their return to Antigua. Those are the custodians of the property, read carefully.

It’s ok to connect the charges with the cocane in the house, but not the murder in the house? Hmmm! Incompetence, or the drugs worth more than the lives terminated. Need answers.

just to remind you. these ex-cops never escaped from anywhere. the alleged killers were the ones who escaped.

Money has become a perfect remedy to all our problems. The Judge posts a figure- U meet it and you’re free. Free to return to the streets to further decay our society; how about some serious community service to humble these guys to let them realise what hard earned labour is all about? By the sweat of thy brow you shall eat!

    • My two cents
      January 3, 2013

The names of the escapees are Kergus Martin and Kenroy Marshall. Read the article again and you will see that these are two other chaps, custodians of the property where the bodies were found.
