UPDATE: Authorities investigate Coast Guard Base fire

Authorities are investigating a fire which occurred at the Coast Guard Base early Friday morning.

According to PRO of the Fire and Ambulance Services, Wayne Letang, the fire department responded to a call of a boat on fire at the the Coast Guard Base in Fond Cole at about 2:30 am on Friday.

“On arrival on the scene officers met an open keel boat constructed of fiberglass and ply board measuring about 26 feet on fire,” he said.

Letang said the fire was brought under control by officers.

He further stated that the boat had the registration number G7132PMH and was named Bowdel.

“The boat was parked in the Coast Guard Base,” he revealed.

Letang said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

DNO has confirmed that the boat “Bowdel” is the main exhibit in a court matter involving a drug bust which occurred on July 12 in the community of Stowe in the south of the island.

Three Dominicans have been charged in connection with the case and were denied bail when they appeared in court on Thursday.

Well the trend of “Burn the evidence- Burn Burn just Burn” is at the door step of the police. When we spoke about setting precedent this is exactly what we meant. If our law enforcement had truly went after the arsonist who are parading as untouchables then maybe, just maybe these arsonists who burned the boat would not be so daring. Spare the punishment and give lattitude to criminals be it lawyers , drug , dealers, Sico Sekos ,Seko Sikos, Easy doors, hard Doors, etc.

Well well well Dominicans, jury, judge, lawyers, investigators, police, detectives, CIA, FBI and even scottish guards. You name it, we have them all. Wonder why crime still go unsolve in DA when we seem to know it all.

    July 20, 2013

Anyway they were caught. Someone or some people tried to destroy evidence. I hope the police took pictures of it and its contents including fingerprints.

Why were there not police or security surveillance? The boat should not have been left in an area where it could be destroyed by fire. The authorities are lax. It is foolhardy and negligence not to keep the area under surveillance.

the authorities here must wake up. They cannot continue to fight crime using the same old legislation and strategy. the criminals are getting more daring and literally taking on the police, in similar fashion as we hear about in Mexico and other parts of Latin America. We cannot continue with a system where bail is denied in the Lower Court today, but an application in the High Court sets the accusers free the next day.

we need to come of age. The police must get all the resources it require to fight organize crime. the laws have to be revised to make it difficult or impossible for Drug Dealers to get bail at the whims and fancy of attorneys who are seemingly un concerned about the presence of high crime master minds among us. Is it because of the money?

Here is a call to change the laws, make the penalties more difficult, deny bail for those involved in drug traffficking and bring on a bail act so that high flying lawyers will not take advantage of the unsuspecting or don’t care jurists.

    • Justice and Truth
      July 20, 2013

And granting them bail. Here is an opportunity to contact their friends to assist them in whatever they did not have time to do. This one is a typical example.

This drug business is a well-oiled organisation. The guys arrested came from Good Hope and Gradbay; the boat has a Possie registration; and now I hear Police looking for 2 Vincies. This kind of operation takes good communication and requires much loyalty. The Police is now required to think and operate like businessmen in order to intercept the criminals.

I wonder if there are any “goods” stashed in the structure of the boat. Maybe upon closer examination discoveries will be made hence the need to burn the boat. Sometimes a second look reveals more than what originally meets the eye.

Good afternoon my people. The boat is physical evidence related to a drug case and it was being stored at the Coast Guard Base. Don’t the Police Department have a secure location where they can store their evidence which should be under twenty four Police guard to maintain the chain of custody of the evidence. I hope they took digital photographs of the boat when they recovered it. Anyway the boat isn’t the main evidence in the case rather its the cocaine so let us hope that the cocaine don’t disappear.

That is carelesness by the Dominica authority . A important piece of evidence like this should be better secured . Why was it not stored inside the base? This area is secured by the police where were they? This area should now be installed with CCTV.. this isa serious matter . the building could have been set on fire.

Everybody is not looking for a pay off from drug dealers. These men risk life, limb and liberty day in and out to secure our waters and our island, yet instead of being thankful we wait in the slips and since something doesn’t suit us it’s a pay off, it’s an inside job. people can’t swim?
