Bail opened at $150,000 to men caught with drugs, firearms and ammo

Three Grand Bay men and a Trafalgar man, facing eight drugs, firearm and ammunition charges, were offered bail in the sum of $150,000 each with one surety, after allegedly being caught dealing over 17,000 grams of cannabis with two guns and several rounds of ammunition on March 19 in Byack.

Patrickson Gerard George, Rueben St. Steve Lewis and Salim Polydore of Grand Bay together with Desmond John Dangleben appeared before Magistrate Tiyani Behanzin Tuesday, and pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Dangleben has already been released on bail.

The defendants face charges of unlawful cultivation of cannabis, possession of cannabis, intent to supply 17,706 grams of cannabis, possession of 12 rounds of  12-guage ammunition,  possession of  24 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 9 rounds of 380 ammunition without being the holders of the relevant licenses according to the law.

They were also charged with possession of a 12-gauge double barrel shot gun without being the holder of a license to have such, and possession of  a 9mm pistol and magazine without having the relevant license for the fire arm on the date caught with it.

The police prosecutor, in presenting the facts stated that the men were allegedly caught at a time when the drugs (weighing 39 lbs when converted in pounds) were ready to be harvested.

Attorney-at-Law David Bruney represented Dangleben, while Peter Alleyne stood on behalf of the other three  defendants.

The trial of the matter began today, but was adjourned until June 22, 2010.

According to Magistrate Behanzin, some of the conditions of the mens’ bail if or when granted, would be to surrender all travel documents and not to leave Dominican shores by any means. They will also be on curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Magistrate Behanzin ordered that Lewis, who is a fisherman, not venture beyond 2,000 feet from Dominica shores.

BMS, I have asked that question in a previous discussion. How secure are our ports? I know that it is a difficult thing to do since we are an island and those traveling from neighboring islands and even through fishing, are not always under surveillance.
In any case why would these individuals engage themselves in such acts and what were their motives? As long as someone possesses any form af ammunition, the intent is to use it. They should be severely punished because who knows, this could have escalated into a bloody battle with such possessions in their custody.
It is very sad that such citizens have given themselves over to this kind of lifestyle. They may be making quick cash but in the process their intents are deadly. For those who may be using canabis for medicinal purposes, moderation is the key but once someone has become addicted to anything in life for monetary gain and power, then that’s another problem.

I FEEL RE ASURED THAT MR BEHANZIN IS HEARING THIS CASE….BUT I HAVE ALWAYS WONDERED. ABOUT THE DEFENDING LAWYERS OF THESE HIGH PROFILE DRUG CASES…I MEAN HOW CAN YOU IN RIGHT CONCIOUS DEFEND A MAN CAUGHT WITH KILOS OF COCAINE OR MARIJUANA AND GUNS OR/AND AMUNITION AND STAND BEFORE A COURT AND DEFEND SUCH PERSONS
I MEAN EVERYONE HAS RIGHTS AND EVERYONE DESERVES A DEFENCE BUT THIS HAS ALWAYS HAD BE AMAZED….DOES THESE DEFENCE LAWYERS HAVE CHILDREN?WOULDNT IT BE IRONIC IF A DEFENCE LAYWERS FIGHTS FOR A DRUG LORD’S RELEASED…GET THE USUAL HUGE MONEY CUT FOR GETTING THEM OFF…AND THAT DRUG LORD REQUITES THE DEFENCE LAWYERS CHILD OF CHILDRENS IN TO COCAINE USE?….I WONDER HOW THAT WOULD FEEL TO THE DEFENCE LAWYERS…
MOST LAWYERS,PASTORS AND POLITITIONS AND ADVOCATES OF THE DEVIL…..SOME ARE CLEAN AND HONEST BUT EASILY CORRUPTED…GOD HELP DOMINICA

  17. March 23, 2010

To kill innocent people . Again the justice system here is reversing.

    March 23, 2010

But where Dangleben get $150,000 to post bail?

And then we want to say bad things about Behanzin? It is a fact that these drug peddlers have big community ppl behind them. That’s why some people want to circulate letter and keep their conspiracy meeting. But thats ok. While they doing foolishness, Behanzin working!.

The person who sign that bail there well mechastay. Next time the bail should be 500,000. Personally I wish the Dangleben would skip bail let the govt pocket get fatter.

    Good Job Behanzin.
