Bajan police arrest man with gun in luggage heading to Dominica

Not the real gun found

Police in Barbados say  they have arrested a man who had a concealed firearm in his luggage and was heading to Dominica.

Media reports indicate the incident happened on December 16 and the man, who was identified as Malachi Maliki Haile Mugabe, was carrying a St. Kitts and Nevis Passport.

According to reports Mugabe arrived in Barbados by air from Trinidad at about 11:20 am. Customs discovered the contraband in a false bottom of Mugabe’s luggage while it was being scanned.

He was handed over to the police.

He was charged with committing the following offences: Illegal Possession of a firearm; Illegal Possession with 59 rounds of ammunition; Importation of a firearm without a valid license; and Importation of ammunition without a valid license.

He appeared in a Magistrate Court on Monday (Dec, 17), and was remanded until January 14, 2013.

Barbados police PRO said Mugabe was en route to Dominica when he was arrested. “At the time that he was arrested he was the holder of a St. Kitts-Nevis passport. It lists his occupation as seaman and it would appear he travels quite frequently,” he told St Kitts Observer.

He said the Barbados police was doing “follow-up investigation” into the matter.

I definitely enjoyed the comments here as a person originally from Bim and wanted to note concerning Barbados’ security apparatus.

1.The officers in question were actually trained multiple times by a US program in addition the US has donated some of its equipment to help over at Barbados’ airport in addition to more serious measures being implemented concerning inter-regional flights.

2.Barbados holds the US embassy which gives information in addition also has the HQ of the Regional Security System so the Customs or Barbados police might have been tipped off or expected the individual somehow.

If the individual was going onto Dominica more than likely investigators are already in Dominica from Barbados to do follow ups IF the Government their allows.

      December 22, 2012

what on earth do you mean by ‘if The Government allows”? This Government is committed to ensuring that Dominicans and visitors to Dominica are safe!!! Perhaps you should start by congratulating the Security Officers in Barbados who were vigilant enough to catch this CRIMINAL!!! He was obviously on a mission – his weapon was not licensed. Do you really think that our Government would find this acceptable? Our Government works with other Caribbean Leaders to implement a united force against crime. Let’s support our Government in this endeavor and stop winging!!!!

Well done Barbados Security and THANK YOU!!!!!

Great job by the B/dos police,we have enough illegal guns on Island we do not need more, but recently I am aware that lots of guns are making it to our shores is that cause for concern to investigate vigorously where those guns end up when they make it to our shores, just look at the spike in drug bust and look no further it is no coincidence lets be more vigiliant and open our eyes and listen intently, report any and all suspicious persons or activities to our law enforcement agencies, lets cherish what little is left about the good nature of dominica because time is running out and we stand to loose our reputation as a crime free country, and that`s a dam shame. 12. FED UP DOMINICAN
    December 19, 2012

There are many questions that needs answers.

    1) Is he a hit-man. If so, who was is target(s).
    2) If he is a hit-man, just as important who hired him.
    3) He must have an address of where he intended to stay. Check the hotels/boarding houses for any bookings under that name. Did he intend to stay with someone in Dominica.
    4) Is he a courier, if so who was he delivering the gun and ammo to.
    5) Will the authorities in Dominica check to see if this would have been his first visit. If it was not, where did he stay/how long did he stay.

I can’t help thinking that if he was travelling through Antigua, would they have detected the gun and ammo.

The CDPF should put their top investigators on this one, and if he is a hit-man, they must remember that the one who hired him is just as guilty as the one that carries out the hit.

Lastly, a big THANK YOU to customs in Barbados.

We all know dat de G.O.N Emmanuel incident was incomplete. Denny shillingford did not take out de target completely. Secko was banned for his stupidity and won’t return to Dominica.

In this light, I would like to advice mr Emmanuel to seek de highest level of security possible. If u don’t have a licensed gun I suggest u get one to defend u and ur wife’s life. Don’t depend on de police. They won’t defend or protect me much less for u.

If, God forbid, any hitman is to enter our country under similar circumstances we have no x-ray machine at our night landing facility to prevent him from walking right tthru the immigration door. However, if any of our patriots were to have his blood spilled on Dominican soil in a case like dat, when dat blood poison our food and our water somebody will pay for it.

    Have no doubts about this

I am just glad that this weapon and criminal did not make it into our country but our Police Investigators must check our immigration records to see if this person visited Dominica before. It is alledged that this man could be a hit man.The fact that he was already armed, gives one the impression that he was no drug dealer.Usually a drug dealer already has his contacts inplace, all he has to do is get whatever he wants to commit his crime. The St. Kitts Observer is reporting that this man was a seaman and could have travelled entensively. The police could start their investigations right here by checking the entrance log at the airport to see wether Malachi Maliki Halle Mugabe entered the country atleast during the year. Assuming he is a hit man,he would have to visit the country at some time to familiarise himself, maybe with a resident of Dominica,a place to reside and ways to get out of the country as quickly as possible.

Whether Muslim or not anyone traveling with a concealed weapon should be charged accordingly. What was his intent traveling to Dominica with a gun? Who are his contacts in Dominica? I believe that his purposes to get to Dominica should be thoroughly investigated. I believe that when someone possesses a gun that he or she will definitely use it because it is a pre-conceived notion anyway.

  34. simply blessed
    December 19, 2012

Everybody heart should be beating fast but God saved us. we do not know what was the man’s intention and how many innocent lives he would have taken. I could only ask myself “was it going to be a replay of what happened in the states with the innocent children”. Dominica was indeed saved by bell.

We are happy that the man was apprehended by the police. but is there more after him?
was he sent by someone who has the intention of sending someone else to do the job that wasn’t started?
We need to pray for our nation. We have to realise that “hitmen” has no face and dont choose people to kill. That “Peter will end up paying for Paul”. We ask the Lord to guide and protect us.

Another problem is that our people especially our youths are engaging in alot of illegal activities such as drug trafficking and the selling of illegal drugs. This might look as fast money making but what they do not know are the consequences that follow. How easily they can put their families in harm’s way. One thing that is known is that when u cant pay back a drug dealer or when a deal goes bad, the only thing left for you is death. when they cant find you, they will take your family. why put your family in risk? we need to wake up and start to think. we only have one life to live.

The measure recently introduced by the authorities at Grantley Adams to screen all interconnecting island traffic at their airport is paying dividends but also highlights a serious lapse in Trinidad, where this man checked in his luggage, for onward travel to Dominica.
    – did he have an accomplice at the airport in Trinidad to enable this gun to be loaded on board without detection?

This was an excellent job on the part of the Barbados police who is to be commended. If the gun was not detected and also in Dominica, someone or some people could have been dead and soon enough.
The Bajan police need to question him as to the nature of his visit to Dominica, where he planned to stay in DA, for how long, the reason why he was bringing a gun with ammunition to Dominica and why did he conceal it in a false section of his luggage. One question he may not answer is “Did he plan to use it?”
He was obviously in transit in Barbados. It shows that this man was up to no good. He is a crook! Could be a member of the illegal drug family and also the mafia. He is definitely not to be trusted.
The name sounds like an African one. He may not be a citizen of those islands and could have procured a false passport. Someone probably assisted him. He may also have a few aliases. This man is good for nothing.
This is one man I hope who will never see the daylight of Dominica. Thanks be to God and to the Bajan police.
The Caribbean/West Indian police in all countries must work together to eradicate crimes/murders.

And you know it would NOT have been detected in D.A. First of all it was in a fake or false bottom compartment as they put it and coming in our luggage don’t go through scanners, customs just passing their hands in that fast and finish. Is only when Dominicans coming in they ready to day-car-lay our suitcase looking for I don’t know what!

The comedian Paul Keans-Douglas said as I heard on a tape which I have, “They digging it (your suitcase) as if they going back to the land.” This tape with various jokes is an excellent one.
The DA police must be more cautious as the Bajan police.

If there was such a relationship between Barbados police, and Dominica police where they cooperate in the apprehension of criminals, the appropriate thing they could have done was allow him to leave Barbados, meanwhile informing the Dominica police that he was on his way.

Hence, he would be allowed to enter Dominica, his acclivities monitored unknowingly; he would be under Dominica police surveillance, I am sure he would unknowingly lead them to the culprit in Dominica who hired him.

I think there lesson the Government of the Caribbean will learn from this is that this thing they are doing selling our nations passport in the name of economic citizenship must come to an end. Look at the name of the criminal.

That is by no means a West Indian name, so the question here is how many dangerous criminals Dominicans bought Dominica passports roaming the world committing heinous crimes?

      That we do not know!

As for the idiot who responded to me suggesting I inform them where they get a direct flight to St. Kitts, be inform I no longer respond to stupid people who I consider beneath my intelligence, so I suggest you consult Piper, since he may know, as he told you all he went to St. Kitts to arrange to make air access much more easy to get to Dominica.

      Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

Francisco, if he was allowed to proceed to Dominica he would surely have to be under constant surveillance from the moment he landed. However, who knows what would happen? It is the policy of police authorities when they apprehend travelers to retain them in that country for they violated their law. It would not be ethical and safe to allow him to travel to Dominica.
As for selling passports, I heard about this for some years which occurred under previous DA governments. Under no circumstances do I approve of this system. It should be eradicated.

Perhaps we need to back up a bit, and ask how could this man have breached the top security at Piarco Airport, possibly twice.

    • December 19, 2012

Ask why if he has a St. Kitts and Nevis Passport, why he did not travel from St. Kitts direct to Dominica via LIAT!

Could it be that the gun, and luggage with the false compartment (bottom) was made available to him in Trinidad!

How do we know that someone in Trinidad is not also involved in the plot?

If this is the case how do we know that he was not assisted in bypassing security at the airport in Trinidad. The way I see it, there are people in some high position in Dominica, and Trinidad involved in this plot!

The devil in hell also have his friends too you know!

That should be a wakeup call for the Government and people in Dominica to stay alert, and not fall asleep at the wheel. The thief comes to steal, kill and distroy. God knows what was the motive. What if he was coming to kill the entire police force. They know Dominica is small with few metel detectors, and cameras. The innocent could have been caught in the cross-fire. God still protects his own. That’s why we all Dominicans should stay united no matter religon, political affiliations etc. We have each others back. Because if some thing goes wrong in Dominica we all suffer. No matter what, we are tied up with each other. The name sounds like an African name. No matter who is, he was coming on a bloody mission. Dominicans, “If you see or know something, Please say something”. He had no good intentions. Why, way he not coming with money or gold. If it looks likes a dog, barks like a dog, it is a dog. He is a criminal, and was coming with all BAD intensions. Thank God for the Barbados and Immigration officers. They saved us. Dominicans, stay safe for the holidays, the end of 2012, and a bright and prosperous, God Fearing New Year 2013. Love U All, because “God is Love.”

  56. December 18, 2012

With a name like he has, indicates that he might be a Muslim heading to Dominica to murder somebody.

If we look into his background, we might find that he is a professional hit-man, perhaps he has left bodies in areas of Trinidad undetected as of yet!

His movements appears suspicious, and indeed cynical: he travels on a St. Kitts passport, over-flew Dominica, and Barbados, to Trinidad.

I assume, on his Northward return; I imagine to St. Kitts, if that is his place of residence, why would he stop over in Barbados, board a flight heading to Dominica.

There are direct flights from Trinidad to St. Kitts anyway.

I suspect he was on his way to Dominica to commit murder; the immigration in Dominica should now check the records to see if this man ever visited Dominica in the past, and if upon his departure there was a body found murdered, and that murder is unsolved,

I believe he was on a mission to kill somebody in Dominica, I believe someone in Dominica hired him to murder someone period!

That is my opinion, and if the authorities in Barbados (the police)are not as incompetent and sloppy as we have in our country, we’ll soon find out if my theory is correct.

In any event I am sure I am almost correct.

Francisco, let us give this a thought. He may have been coming to Dominica to try to obtain a DA passport. What else could I state aside from he was up to something and nothing good, with a gun and ammunition in a false section of his luggage? That is scary and a man to be scared of.
God surely knows who he is and why he had these paraphernalia and what was his intention. I hope he will not be returned to St.Kitts-Nevis and after he is interrogated in Barbados, he will be returned to his country of origin, no doubt, Africa.

They don’t search luggages at Melvinhall for guns, in fact they hardly search, and when they do they only search for ‘things’ to charge you duty. That’s one of the reasons there are so many guns in D’a, besides back door guns. He was probably coming to sell it, he travels quite frequently too.

    • budman

I asked before, and Im asking again..is it the right of the DOMINICA customs officer to ask me how much money I have on me?…As a visitor there on a few occasions, I found it a strange question..I have never had anything to declare, they searched my luggage and asked how much money I have to spend for the weekend..

      • REALLY!
        December 19, 2012

It is not a strange question. the custom form tells you that you have to declare any thing over $10,000. So he has a right to ask this question. You are not a real traveller or don’t read the custom form

      • December 19, 2012

Just Asking you are so right. I came to Dominica for carnival this year and being a Dominicn with an Americaan passport i was pulled over and asked how much money did I have. I asked what does it matter and my purse was taken away from me and I went in a room where they checked my money and found that I had less than the $10,000 which is required to declare to customs. I told them I have worked for my money saved fro my vacatiob to come home to enjoy myself and I am being questioned on how much money I have and I am no drug dealer in America so you are so right that who for them to question and check they does not.
This is why the calypsonian said that everything is back to front and upside down in Dominica. Thanks to the Barbados custom officer for his due deligence and sharp eyes in detecting the gun in the false compartment of the suitcase.

if you don’t think security at Dominca tight you must try going out with illegal fire arms and see how fast you will end up stockfarm. if barbados was his destination he would have gone clear cuz like dominica when you entering barbados if you have nothing to declare they don’t search your bags. you should do you research and you will find out how many persons get caught going out.

I strongly believe that this was a hit-man on a mission to kill. Question, Who hired him? And who, was he on a mission to terminate? People get ready! It seems like our beloved peaceful nation has gone to the wolves in sheep clothing. Too many in high places will now resort by all means to achieve the ends. What I mean to say is that, this is no difference to the other allegations that is currently plaguing the nation. If D/cans want to continue to be naive about what’s taking place, there’s a surprise that’s about to smite them in their faces. The whole country ought to get ready to demonstrate, shut the country down and demand the removal of this corrupt regime, that has become a cancer in the nation. Lougaoo Mem is not a member of any political party but is ready to contribute his energy and resources to promote true democracy in his country. So help me God!
