UPDATE: Robbery at MacMillan Gas Station; police appear baffled

Scene of the crime last night

Police PRO Kenth Matthew has confirmed that there was a robbery last evening at McMillan Gas Station in Roseau.

The incident occurred around 8:00 pm.

Reports had previously indicated that the establishment was robbed at gun point and Matthew confirmed that investigations are ongoing into the matter but the police have yet to make any arrests.

When asked about the apparent series of robberies, this being the third in just under a week and a half, Matthew responded, “It seems like maybe it’s a trend now and the criminal element feels that this is the way to go.”

He continued, “It looks like a trend, like a series but I don’t know if it’s a trend. The places that were robbed were business places that are a bit isolated and while an increase in Police presence will help, the businesses themselves need to look at increasing the security in their place.”

He hopes that a break in the investigations for the police would be very helpful and admits that an increase in police activity will assist, as is customary at this time of the year.

He said, “Usually at this time of year an increase is expected and that I expect those who manage the (Police) Force would be looking to pass those orders down. The only good thing, if there is one, is that most of the business’ daily take had already been banked and so the robbers only got away with what the owner estimates may have been much less had it been otherwise.”

The gas station attendant was taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital due to the fact that she was distressed following the incident.

Earlier this week, J.E Nassief on Goodwill Road was robbed and last week the Coca-Cola outlet in Fond Cole was also robbed. Both times the robbers were armed and had their victims tied up.

    An advise to you the proprietor owners, you should remove cash from your properties ever so often at lease every hour so that when the robbers come, they will not get large sums of money,then you should beef up your security, more or less with firearms.All you need is two men for a day, doing a 6 hours period {not women}This will cost you just about $100.00 a day for security, so think of when one has to be loosing let’s say $15, 000.00 a day by robbers, Please do the maths.

    When it comes to fighting crime in Dominica, the police are simply LAZY. way back in 1990. my home was robbed while I was asleep. The police was called once I told them that I normally slept with a window open, the officer adv that in the future I should close the window, at the time i lived in a upstairs apt, .. no attempts to dust for finger prints…CASE CLOSED.

    look at how dark it is in that area? that is madness…. where are the street lights?? are we still in 1901??? you got to be kidding me… If it wasn’t for the light coming from the gas station, there will be no light at all… And that is all over d/ca…. PUT MORE LIGHTS ON THE STREETS, LIMIT GANG HANG-UP….. and not in roseau, but all over. People suppose to be able to walk on every street in the night and see where they going… Common please.     In 1990 I bought a pressure cooker 10 litres for 510 francs and i took it home, after 15 days a voler broke my house he stole it. He sold it for 50 dollars EC so i gave him prays a few days later he was caught red handed breaking a car so he went to jail.

    I understand Mr. Matthew that businesses need to improve their security because obviously the police is not providing adequate security. I do hope, that when a business owner effectively defends his business, the legal system will be sympathetic. It is not easy to wake up at 4:30 every morning to make a dollar and then some useless, lazy, good for nothing just wants to take it from you. I hope the police would not be inclined to take away the firearm from the owner. When we put down two the rest will get the message. Go work for your money!!!

    The consequences of our sociopolitical and economic environment. Crime happens everywhere however we must admit that we in Dominica are experiencing criminal activities never seen in Dominica. There is a reason why we are experiencing such audacious criminal moves. It is universally knowledge that where there is increase poverty there will be increase and new levels of crime; where there is a lack of morale within law enforcement crime proliferates and finally where there is lawlessness and corruption in government institutions criminals will up their game. Have we been experiencing in Dominica any or all three of the elements noted?

    Some criminal become more aggressive as they begin to feel entitled; Criminals with such attitude tend to justify their thoughts and plans based on personal ideologies. The criminals do take advantage of openings that comes with the hypocrite code of conduct “ Do as I say not as I do”. Criminals do observe when authorities are themselves criminals. When authorities and law enforcement are themselves criminals the street criminals recognize that there is a gapping hole in the justice system – why not go to work. Like our kids criminals prance upon the weaknesses in authority. Subconsciously and unintentionally our kids pick up on the weaknesses of parental authority and the kids would ride that wagon till the wheels fall off.

    When the authority is subdued by it’s own guilt , an authority cannot be effective – no way. It’s like trying to get the abortion pastor to effectively preach to his church about abortion, fornication and adultery. How can the police truly address crime or the threat thereof when some criminals are cajoled and criminal activities are deliberately protected from justice by the very law enforcement authorities.

    How can we expect better from criminals when the court system is just so blatantly corrupt with a web of corrupt lawyers, corrupt senior counsels, judges and magistrates.

    Unless we look at the undertones – the underlying factors we are looking at a runaway train. Many of us are afraid to tackle the problem from below the knee for fear of political stigmatization. The criminal activities that we are experiencing lately became inevitable once authoritative sectors of society had been compromised. I predicted almost a year ago that we will soon be dealing with Kidnapping and gun point robbery.

    Dominicans can call on the police till they hoarse, you cant fix the problem from the branches, tackle it at the roots.
    The main causes of crime is lack of good education, lack of jobs, unfair labor practices and an overall lack in opportunities to better ones self.

    I will keep saying it till someone in position listens. Hopefully the Government.
    1. Create and make available good paying jobs
    2. Provide training for youths in skilled professions
    3. Raise the standards of our education,make books, pcs, materials and equipment needed for students available
    4. Give people employment and positions based on qualifications(level playing field)
    5. Invest in production and processing plants for agricultural products. To provide a livelihood and market for farmers, which will entice the youth to get in the field because its possible to make a good living..

    And for all those people saying the youths want it now, the answer is yes they do want it now. It a faster modern world and we cant ask then to live in the past. So now the solution is setting the foundation, so Dominicans can achieve what they want.

    Complaining wont fix a thing…

    I GUARANTEE YOU that this robbery was from the SAME PEOPLE who did the first two, so I highly doubt it was a trend. I also find it hard to believe that NO ONE has been able to give at least a *small* piece of an important detail as to who they are.

    What they should do is have the police patrolling the area, looking out for anyone that even *acts* suspicious.

Let us then prepare tompay taxes to pay the salaries of a 800 strong police force because thats what we need right now.     Police too busy stamping passport forms.
    Outsource that to civilian government workers.

    Police too busy bringing people for driving license test and vehicle transfers and vehicle licensing etc.
    Outsource that to civilian government workers.

    Police too busy checking parking violations.
    Outsource that to the private sector (with their digital cameras)

    Police too busy hunting down weed in the bush.
    Legalize it and tax it.

    With all those extra police personnel freed up there will be more than enough officers to
    be place on foot/mobile patrol.

      Very Very TRUE! An officer recently told me that he joined the force to do criminal investigation which he has been commended for and all they have him doing is checking vehicle tyre. So frustrating he planning on leaving after his 20 years.

    I don’t know how this is being observed but as a former police officer from Dominica, I will suggest this. For the moment the spate of these robberies are concentrated in and around the capital Roseau. The criminals are very much aware that they have stirred up the heat in town, so the police there will only concentrate in the capital. There next move might be to attack businesses out of town, in some remote village, a quiet not well lit area outside of town. The police now need to focus their attention on that and inform persons in those areas out of town to be very much on the alert and report any sign of anything out of the ordinary.

      What are you really trying to say? Are you condoning such behavior? Being poor doesn’t give anyone a license to steal. There is still something called hard work. You talk about poor education system but some of those committing those crimes were the ones frustrating the teachers at school and disturbing their fellow classmates instead of paying attention in order to learn something at school. You talk about prejudicial religious people and no one cares but some of these same people committing those crimes are the ones who will curse you if you try to bring the word of God across to them and call you all sorts of names, SO WHAT’S YOUR POINT. THEY HAVE NO ONE TO BLAME BUT THEMSELVES.

      I’m sure if a farmer ask them to come work with him, they won’t go.

      There’s youth skills training programs they won’t go and learn a skill.

      There are things that they can do to earn a few dollars but i guess the money is too small and it takes too much time so they prefer the fast and easy way out. SO STOP BLAMING OTHERS, THEY HAVE ONLY THEMSELVES TO BLAME.

    I wonder what happen to all those GA they give those police to enable patrolling. they carrying barrel, school children, groceries but they not dong the job so when you call no vehicle available. bring back the patrol bikes, ask china for some.

    the whole problem is young people want money to enjoy the festive season,but do not want work for it,they will sit down for the whole year without doing a stroke of work,and use this times, when everybody is excited and in preparation mode and kinda dropping their guard,so business owners need to stay alert and hire security guards,that is the best solution i see.

    People like to blame the police but without the help of the public they will not be able to solve crimes such as these.

    But some of them when police come to them to ask for a name of a person suspected or where they live they never know. So when they think they are punishing the police is their own selves or a family member they putting in danger.

    Do not blame the police. My mother always said ” i pas ni voler san sootiwer”. So i blame the mothers, fathers, friends and girlfriends of the thieves for the robberies. Why? Because when these guys bring home the money, groceries, clothes and bling for them they accept it knowing fully weel that it was stolen! So I am calling on these “sootiwer” to stop aiding and abbeting these criminals and report them to the police!

    Firstly, too much American influence (we’re too intrigues to try all those stunts we see on tv), then let’s commend the police for wanting to only be office boys -because they don’t patrol the streets like they’re supposed to.
    I already pity those culprits as i sense some proprietor will take matters into their own hands and do something drastic. Let’s hope the public doesn’t feel sorry when some justice is served, as these individuals can engage in something alot more constructive than this practice. :-x Goodness, work hard for what you want!! Why are you all being such blood sucking parasites? Maybe they’re too hard on them, that’s why they get away when faced with the courts. I think some stricter sentences/punishment need to be handed down to those convicts so they learn a lesson.
    Right now i anticipate hearing of another such episode within a week since all the festivities are so close!

    This is not good…What seems to be the problem?.This is not looking good for the Police at all….
    If those perps. cannot be apprehend sooner rather than later, then I will have to call for the resignation of the Commissioner of Police…

    For it leaves me with no choice but to believe that there is a systematic problem within the Police dept.
    And clearly the buck stops with him.

    Blame your leader for the fate of the country. The Police force is more inclined towards him the the masses. More law officers should decrease crime but the opposite is happening in DA. In a time like this (celebration time) police foot patrol should be increased (I’m not a police chief)

    We are recruiting more police officer and we still can get these gun robbery and other crimes under control. Big high day in Roseau these lawlessness going on????? We need a fsst police response team or unit to response to crimes of these nature and others.

    The Prime Minister might needs to address these matters…..I would like him to address the nation on these crimes and gun slinging, let the country hear your voice on the on the matter.     I’m waiting to read the full story, to see if its the same method(s) as the other robberies. If so, then there is a very dangerous group of low life individuals walking around.

    Surely there must be someone (girlfriend, mother,wife etc) whoes man (son, boyfriend,husband ect) all of a sudden has more than the usual amount of money to splash around. If they have a conscience, say something before these idiots hurt/kill someone (or before someone hurts/kills them) If its the latter, I for one would have no sympathy.

    Well these robbers sound like bandits on the loose, robbing businesses at will. Roseau and environs is too small for this. Somebody must know something, or have seen something. Anyway it was said almost a year ago that crime in Dominica was not serious,and that came from a top official. I would like to see how much more serious it is going to get. The leaders are not setting a good example, they are not recognizing the laws or constitution of the land, so I suppose no one sees the need to. I can only pray for my country, because only God can turn it around to what it used to be.

      I am not blaming the Police for crimes. What I blame those authorities for is reporting through the Media for nationals to hear that “crime is going down.” They state this so that it will put nationals at ease. They should never state this. It may encourage criminals to commit further crimes.
      The Police authorities in Toronto state the same thing. I wished that they would not inform the public about that. Frankly, I do not want to hear about it. As I go about minding my own business, I pray to God and ask Him to protect me and my household. This is what we must do.
      If business owners are not able to hire security staff, an alarm system near the cash register could be installed (don’t want to say too much about that for obvious reasons) which may prove effective as a deterrent.

      Really!!! You honestly believe that the police can be everywhere at the same time? Really!! Or do you think that the police has the type of sophisticated intelligence unit that the FBI, CIA, KGB and other similar institutions have? It is my solemn opinion that the police in Dominica are doing a damn fine job with the limited resorces which they have. Some of you are the same people who just yesterday attacked the news item with the new police recruits, claiming that the money which will be used to pay them should be used instead to purchase equipment for the Princess Margret Hospital. Yet we turn around and say that there is not enough police presence in the city and else where. Off course there is not a significant presence because they are stretched thin.
