Chairman of the Canefield Urban Council Simeon Albert said he has won the first round of a court battle with a former employee, a resident of Canefield and a past member of the council.
Albert said he pursued that matter in court to clear his name for allegations of theft.
“Sometime last year, three individuals came before a meeting of the council and accused me of committing theft. I sent a letter to them indicating that they should apologize within seven days or I will take them to court. They did not and so I took them before the court. We met last month where the court awarded me judgment against the first and third defendant, in that they had not filed their defense. In terms of the second defendant, his lawyer has requested that we move to mediation for settlement,” he explained.
Albert said he is pleased to know that judgment has been awarded against at least two individuals and another has agreed to settle.
“I think it’s a good day for me as chairman of the council because for nine years I have been serving the people of Canefield and for someone to accuse me or any council of committing an offense they must make up their mind that they should have their evidence,” he said.
Michael Copiel- one of the defendants- said the information given by Albert is incorrect, and the matter has not been rectified, since the day of the mediation meeting the defense lawyer was unable to attend.
“I do not know if the chairman of the council is unaware of what is actually happening. A meeting was held in the community on the matter of which Albert was present, along with me and other individuals. I asked questions about the financial affairs of the council to Albert and he sent a lawyer paper for me and two other members. That matter has never reached the court,” Coipel claimed.
“On June 15, 2010, the members went to mediation but only the lawyer for the claimant (Albert) was present because our lawyer could not make it. Hence the matter was pushed back to July 19, 2010. We all were present but our lawyers were at court again,” he stated.
Copiel said the court has not taken any decision on the matter.
“We were told that mediation is to rectify that problem. I don’t understand why the chairman would go publicly to give the impression that the court has taken a decision when we have not even spoken to mediation,” he added.
Copiel said Albert is on a mission to defame his character as he plans to contest the Canefield Urban Council elections.
“He knows that I am going to contest the council election in September and he is afraid. He knows that I am well loved by the people and I will defeat him at the polls so he is trying his best to tarnish my reputation,” he claimed.

@Truth if he signed a loan for someone wouldn’t both their names appear as was the case with many of the people on that list? I saw the list too and that is not true. He took the loan and I believe that is what calmed him down, because he would call talk shows every day to defend the government. Someone called in and said to him why are you defending government when you are drowining in debt your name is on the net, it’s on the radio and in the papers from several institutions. Simeon responded that his debt to the banks etc were private matters, the caller said no it isn’t since it is published. He hung up on Matt and never called in again.
If Simeon had signed a loan for anyone who refused to pay, he would have made it clear that was the case. You need not do that. So are you going to say his home loan that he didn’t pay causing the bank to sieze the house is also someone elses’s. In Dominica we like to defend the indefensible too much.
Clearly you are no fan of Coipel but don’t do that. Our people must stop believing that people running for office are making major sacrifices, yes they may want change, but they also want the props.

Money Simeon want I hope he pays NDF when Coipel pays him off. His name was right here on DNO for weeks probably still is if the article has not been deleted for bad debts. He damn well misuse the funds and council car .You so friend with Skerrit and bank seizing your house while you running politics is council you can manage effectively? Sue people Simeon but pay your debts it’s embarassing you on council asking for taxes when you haven’t paid your taxes for years, and just forget to pay the bank their mortgage. You have serious fiancial troubles, so using one to cover the other is not out of the realm.
Coipel self needs to get a life, for a man he’s no better than Simeon always in some talala. None of you deserve to be councillors. Too much politics, but Simeon still have to answer some questions.
