Carbon warns of ‘dire consequences’ in Salisbury

Police Chief, Daniel Carbon, has warned that there will be dire consequences if anyone is hurt during disturbances now taking place in Salisbury.

The disturbances began on Monday morning when the main road in the community was blocked. The road has since been cleared. Stones were also thrown.

Carbon described the event as ‘criminal conduct’ carried out by thugs.

He said the windshield of a bobcat was damaged and police officer struck in the back by a stone.

“I am warning the people who are involved in his criminal conduct to desist from this conduct immediately,” he said late Monday afternoon.

He added, “I must say further that a stone can be a deadly missile. I hope it doesn’t happen. I wish it never happens but a police officer can lose his life by the mob and the thugs who are throwing the stones in Salisbury, innocent bystanders can lose their lives by throwing stones at the police.”

Carbon stated that if anyone gets hurt, the consequences will be dire.

“If a police or any bystander, Lord forbid, get killed or receive serious injury there will be dire, serious consequences that will follow,” he stated.

He sent a strong warning to those involved in the disturbances.

“Therefore I am warning the people to desist from this criminal conduct immediately and return Salisbury to a form of normalcy,” Carbon noted.

Salisbury always has been the melting pot of Dominica, where people come to look for work. The Declaration of Independence was written in Salisbury Primary School. It has always been a giving village, fed many Dominicans and have been a good provider for their families. The women as well as men are hard workers and independent citizens. I am proud of my village, we are very well informed about the importance of life, that is why we do not vote for a fool that care about only himself and not his brothers and sisters in the country. We need our PM to build us farm road, village road and we need our water system to be running aging. We need Macouchere bridge to be back in action so we will not be stopped when it rains. Tell Skeritt he is “not doing justice, to the hard working citizens of Salisbury.”

Nonetheless, you as a police chief must know that if anyone gets injured; as long as this person has the capacity to talk to the police as to whether he or she would like to report the matter to the police; they are the only ones who should decide and not you. Stop the scare mongering ;every educated Dominican can see that you as a chief of police is always ready to take matters into your hands when followers of the opposition party are stepping up to show the world that enough is enough and Dominica is improving in the reverse by offering blind uneducated people handouts in orde to shut up.Violence in demonstrations begins when you and your boys interfere too closely. It is like adding oil to the fire.Remember why Eugenia Charles dismissed the defense force; it was due to lack of trust.

An ordinary villager is protesting abuse and bobol in the country and you talking of consequences, on the other hand a member of Parliament , albeit a Labour member considered top ranking waved his gun in Parliament, where it is against the law to bring in such weapon into parliament and you have nothing to say, you moo moo. This is political harassment upon we the people of Dominica and upon the UWP Team seated professionally in Parliament, a very disciplined political party compared to the rotten, corrupt Labour party.
Get your priority right sir, if not the uniform yo wear is not worth it.

Where was the ole Speaker, she turn moo..moo..or just bias or its time she retired. Cannot perform the act anymore.

Mr. Carbon, i don’t like your tone nor do I support your intention. Anyone who breaks the law is subjected to be prosecuted by the law. when the police chief makes public remarks saying “there will be dire, serious consequences that will follow” this gives me the impression that your intention is dealing with this outside the law.

    • ?????????????????
      May 23, 2017

Exit Strategy are you condoning violence? Of course there should be dire serious consequences when people behave foolishly and rebelliously and cause harm to others. I am sure you will sing a different tune if it is your relative and acquaintances who get hurt. You will now turn and say the Police not doing their work and you will immediately turn into a law Officer. You will support when you have too.

    True
A stone thrown from a high point can hit a head below with serious velocity and cause death. :(
Policemen are not stone throwers; so if a UWP stone thrower gets a bullet returned for a stone, then Linton and Hector shouldn’t act shocked. . .
So all parties should act sensible so peaceful protests can remain PEACEFUL

What does Mr. Carbon mean by “there will be dire consequences”, shoot to kill? The behavior of the residents who are involved in this civil disobedience is extreme. For people to act in this extreme manner means that they have insufferable issues that need urgent attention. The throwing of stones to cause injury and damage I cannot condone. The setting of fire to the debris that was used to block the road in order to get attention, once life nor property is in danger I can live with that. Desperate times call for desperate measures. I’m sure they finally have the attention of government. These people who have been treated as pariahs are speaking out with action, for the time for words has long passed, and deeds alone suffice. The causes of the protest are worse than the protest.

Carbon you serious? you waiting for someone to get hurt or killed before taking action to bring an end to this lawlessness? That is not good enough. The police must act to punish those who interviewed with the free movement of the public, who caused damaged to public property; who prevented people from earning a daily bread (individual) and revenue (business). Those who created anxiety in the society must also feel the weight of the law. Their right to freely speak, associate and voice their opinions on national issues is no unfettered license for preventing others in the enjoyment of their constitutionally given rights. They must understand that this behaviour comes with consequence, which could be dire as well.

The government and opposition have no other choice but to sit down and de-escalate the present political tensions existing presently in Dominica, the prime minister but be willing to show the olive branch in order to keep the island stable, the opposition must also be willing to come to the table, small island pride and arrogance must take a back seat on this very important national issue, my take ,is that partisanship have no place where 95% of the population is of the same ethnic vein, we cannot continue to fight and hate each other over politics. Dominicans need to wake up.Hotep.

Way too late, we are all doomed to damnation!

  11. May 23, 2017

It seems that the Commissioners tone is one that seeks to escalate tensions ,instead of common ground. Yesterday the security practically accuse the main opposition on the island, using words like thugs and other synonyms is never a good start when certain parts of the populace are aggrieved, using the heavy hand of the state can lead to escalating the present situation and that can have devastating effects on the state.there seems to be a colonial vein of zero tolerance vis-a-vis coming from the state militia, remember , the history of police interactions with the populace is well documented. There must be de-escalation of the present scenario, where the aggrieved people of salisbury must have a voice in putting their case forward. This is where the job of an ombudsman is of most importance, from what i’ve seen the police no longer look civilian, but military battle ready, so the state is ready to do battle against itself, which is very disturbing and repressive. Hotep.

At this time it is too early to try to guess who is behind the fire seen on the Salisbury highway and as a result we must wait before we blame anyone. However, while I do not hold Carbon, Blackmore, or Skerrit responsible for the fire, I do blame them for the trend I see in Dominica today because quite frankly I don’t believe they have done enough to stop that very evil trend. Again I repeat, they did not do it and are not responsible for it but here is what I blame them for. Going back to 2009 when the house of GON Emmanuel was firebombed with an elderly couple inside, they should have gone all out to find that evil person and bring him / them to justice. they didn’t. Then on Feb 7, we also had fire and gunshots on the streets of Roseau. They should have brought those evil men to justice but like the GON Emmanuel saga, they played games with it. Looking at the GON Emmanuel firebomb and the February fire in Roseau, and then this one in Salisbury, you could tell they are all the same

They could not have gone all out for GON`s case, the culprit was their guy a very famous liar lawyer. All part of the gang. One has to understand how this political mafia operates.

To me it is clear you have sold your soul to the Skerrit regime. I’m sorry for you because you will be left without even a reputation. Is best you resign before putting more shame on our police force. You have no honour left, trust me.

This is not the occurrence of the DLP as some UWP supporters have stated.
The Leader of the UWP Party should be warned to inform his supporters to cease and desist. Otherwise face being arrested, charged and sued.
