A court matter involving Denny Shillingford is one of the many cases to be heard by the Eastern Court of Appeal of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court(ECSC) when it begins sitting in Dominica on Monday morning.

Shillingford was, in 2010, convicted  and was jailed on a charge of causing grievous bodily harm . The matter was appealed and the EECA ordered a new trial before a different judge.

However, at the second trial he was found guilty and sentenced to seven years behind bars. The matter was appealed again last November but the judges ruled that more time was needed to study the documents in the case and it was traversed to the April sitting of the court beginning today (Monday).

It is alleged that Shillingford had instructed his pit-bull to attack the complainant, Davidson Joseph, in the early hours of September 24, 2009 at St. Joseph.

In his defense Shillingford had insisted that Joseph was the aggressor who had attacked him with a cutlass, which led to the dog biting him.

There is a total of 33 matters to be heard by the Court of Appeal.

There are high court civil appeals and magisterial criminal appeals against sentence and against convictions. Among them are Daryl James vs the police in which James was convicted for possession of a controlled drug and possession of firearm without a valid licence.

There are two magisterial civil appeals and 18 high court civil appeals. Among them are: Alix Boyd Knights vs Winera (Dominica) Ltd, Fenton Telemacque vs the authorized officer et al, and Attorney General of Dominica vs Richard Honore.
