Dice pleads guilty to marijuana possession

Dice
Dice

Dominica’s reigning Calypso king, Dennison “Dice” Joseph, pleaded guilty to marijuana possession in a Roseau court on Friday morning.

Dice was arrested in 2009 but had initially pleaded not guilty.

However, he has now taken full responsibility and has changed his plea.

Court reports indicate that the police had gone to the house of the entertainer and had found 190 grams of the illegal drug.

He was fined $1,500 to be paid by August or in default spend three months in jail.

The court took into consideration his ‘guilty plea’ and what he ‘does socially’ before sentencing.

Dice’s lawyer, David Bruney, also begged the court to be lenient by not imposing a custodial sentence on him.

Inspector Claude Weekes prosecuted on behalf of the State.

Dice or no Dice, Marijuana needs to be legalized! (like in Colorado and California) and keep hard drugs illegal, because the end game here is only to appease the governments of the French islands and the USA, nothing else.

dice has accepted his his mistake and that is what makes him a gigger king. he has realised that he is not perfect and that eh can make mistakes too. in fact he hasan experience to share with the youth when he speaks to them so let’s look at the positive side of this situation. Only GOD knows why it happened that way. however shame to some of our so called men and women of high repute with degree in this and in that and are involved in so many hidden anti social activities. but time alone oh time will tell. long live king dice this is a gift he has from the most high GOD.those who casting the first stone , hope they have no sins.

Please someone tell me, how much marijuana did he have on him for a case to last that long. Seriously, thought by know DA would have laws in place to just fine people over simple possessions instead of dragging on **** for so long. Get with the program, charge on simple possessions, and use the money to fix the schools and roads. Hmmm

While I am a “die-hard Dice fan” I do not condone illegal activity. What he did was WRONG and there is so ifs or buts about it. However, some of the comments on DNO are just totally uncalled for. For those of us who are asking Dice to be a role model for our youth, how many of us are fathers and mothers and ARE role models to our children? We swear, steal, lie etc. in their presence (some of us even send them to steal or lie on our behalf). I love Dice as a performer (and I ALWAYS will)but I honestly think Dice has to do some serious soul searching AND SO DO MOST OF US……..

If u all on DNO waiting for Dice to help all u raise all u children…… You all have failed… Dice is a Calypso King, not the parent of u all children, talking about Dice have to be an example to the youth… You parents have to be example to your children, not DICE

The system made Marijuana illegal years ago, places like America, Britain and the rest of Europe.. Same way being gay marriage was illegal, and now the same Europe and America and decriminalizing marijuana and gay marriage

So you Dominicans need to open you all eyes…
It is a waste of time arresting a man for such little quantity of marijuana
A waste of the court time

Maybe Dice wasnt even guilty, but hey, since 2009 you in and out of court, we in 2013… Any man would get fed up…. I might have done the same as Dice and jus plead guilty and move on with my life

Marijuana possession should not be a crime, that is the imperialist model not ours. Time to get rid of that law which is a law made to make criminals of black men and imprison black men.Utter nonsense and foolishness. More people are killed by cigarette but because it make milions for the imperialist economies they legalise it. marijuan is only criminalisd because it is grown by black people n black population countries. We are dancing to the tune of thse who want to destroy our men.Decriminalise majuarana and educat people on its use.

its quite sad when the “first world countries” are starting to decriminalize it, make it legal for medical use that we continue to arrest ppl for it.. in some cases,it is legal for recreational use (colorado & washington state).. even wasington D.C (the capital) made it legal for medicl usage.. smh.. just dont understand why we still stuck in a 1980 mentality in 2013.. we should really take examples from U.S, Israel, Canada, and many European countries.. if THEY realize its good for; after THEY made it illegal.. then y cant we revise our own laws for the betterment of our ppl.. i guess thats just the caribbean on a whole(xcept jamaica)

He who have no sin throw the first stone! Its amazing the amount of hypocritical response that this article evoked, just because it is DICE the son of some malayway.

The man is a rasta and was was not even caught actually smoking. If every marijuana smoker was to be arrested Dominica will need 10,000 prisons.

In the meanwhile people are stealing millions, raping, killing etc and the very self righteous hypocrites are justifying their actions. In Dominica the system is easier and more forgiving on murderers than on pot users.

Crack cocaine is the drug which is literally causing havoc on the youths due to its debilitating effect. It is what that cause “paro-ism” yet no body gets arrested for its consumption though everyone know who are the dealers and users. But poor Dice they want to use as their whipping boy.

Until such time as it becomes a legal substance, marijuana is illegal, therefore, against the law. What do we tell the young people who look up to Dice as a role model? 40. Peeping Tom
    April 26, 2013

Hold it! So, if i am caught in some illegal activity can i get credit for being a nice guy? And, will my cousin who is a “viey neg” get hammered by the court because he has not had the opportunities that i had to make headlines? And, what if the PM is found guilty of stealing our money; will the judge give him credit because of his numerous sleepless nights and meal-less days because he was working so hard for us? And will all those who now scream “give Dice a break” because he is a celebrity and he has done some social good, will they also scream give the PM a break?

I have always had a major problem when the court’s interpretation of justice is to give certain categories of people credit for their success and to be lenient on them but damn others who have not been so successful. The court’s bias because of Dice’s perceived success reminds me of a time in Dominica when the rich, mulattoes, and whites were favored because they had money and colour and name. Frankly, i thought we had grown beyond that dark age.

The court actually tells Dominicans that your punishment is based on who you are, not on the offence for which you are culpable based on our laws. Way to go!! I hope Dice and his team produce a song about this nauseatingly ridiculous statement.

    • Peeping Tom
      April 26, 2013

By the way, for all those who cannot resist an orgasmic reaction whenever Peeping Tom posts, spare me the BS about “haters”, “jealousy”, and the countless absurdities that you can cough up. Firstly, they are of no significance to me. Secondly, my stance has nothing to do with Dice. I really do not give a rat’s behind of the person called “Dice.” My stance is purely about right and wrong, justice and fair play, and the already low standing of the courts in the minds of Dominicans. I do not see how the court’s foolish statement can restore people’s confidence in the justice system. Probably the magistrate was hypnotised!

What the heck does being rasta have to do with smoking ganga? This has become the most prominent recreational drug in the world today and has nothing to do with religion. On the other hand I know several people who carry dreadlocks as a fashion statement and not neccessarily because they believe in the Rasta religion. I also happen to know loads of people who smoke ganga but don’t believe in the rasta religion nor do they even grow dreadlocks for fashion.

Rastas will smoke the herb though; as this helps with their spiritual enlightenment, opens the mind and is supposed to bring them closer to Jah. Rasta’s also believe in eternal life and immortality as did the famous Bob Marley. Considered as a legend of Rastafari movement, with his dreadlocks Bob Marley helped spread the Rasta word by touring with his Jamaican music and strong belief in the Rasta religion.

The Dominica Calypso Association should immediately distance itself from this fellow……and should even go a step further by striping him of his crown……This is not the type of behaviour befitting of a Kaiso King at all…..Failure to act by the association would only lead one to assume that by none action they suppourt this behaviour and consider this as acceptable behaviour for a Calypso Monarch……I dont know about you but if they dont act on this I fully expect that some persons myself included will reexamine supporting Calypso in Dominica both as a Corporate Sponsor and as an indiviual patron……Fully expect people to dislike my comment but I dont care……This is wrong and should not be condoned period

That is why this country is like this. we call wrong doing good and the people who commit crimes in this country we have them in high esteem. We need to redefine the term role model. DNO, are you going to post my comment?

This raises the question of people convicted drug offenses representing big companies on the island. Is it a matter of forgiving certain people or having anyone represent a company company as long as he/she is popular? The fact that someone is engaged in such activity should be of serious concern when being the face of a company. In other words, will LIME, DIGICEL, MARPIN or DOMLEC make someone their representative knowing that he/she is a drug user? Just asking…

The Treasury was defrauded of thousands of $$$$$$, due to secret land deals by the untouchables. Bin Bobol, Fertilizer Bobol. Indiscrminate sale of passports (ordinary and diplomatic). Quick enrichment, through dubious means. Endless evidence and facts to prove.

I don’t subscribe to the notion that because others who have committed more serious crimes are not investigated, arrested, and or brought to justice, that others should not be made to pay for breaking the law. All those who break the laws that have been enacted in our country to protect the innocent, must be brought to justice.

Now, shame on our law officials for not investigating, arresting and or bringing to justice those who commit despicable and unconscionable crimes in our land – some of which you mentioned above.

  76. Oh please
    April 26, 2013

If anything, I hope this sparks a national debate about the decriminalization of marijuana. It just does not seem cost efficient to spend all this time and money to prosecute someone for possession of a few grams of weed that was clearly meant for their own recreational purposes. What is that threshold? Where do it consider it possession with intent to distribute? Let’s stop being naive hypocrites and have substantial dialouge on issues.

Too many of the comments here typify the Dominican reaction to unsavory deeds growing ever more rampant among us. Blame someone else, not the doer. Mix it up a bit with allegations of big time perpetrators getting away with murder. Blah, blah, blah.

When will we stand up for the right to uphold the law as is? For big and small alike. All I can say is, “To whom much is given, much more is expected. You live by the sword, you die by the sword.”

There needs to be a serious discussion on the use of marijuana.
While the developed countries have it legalized in all types of subtle ways, for medicine, in special shops, the lesser developed countries are criminalizing their citizens for its use.
Marijuana has proven to have some positive medicinal properties, I condemn the drug trading of marijuana but if tobacco can be legal why not free up the herb and prohibit the trafficking.
In any case, if it is legalized there will be no need for illegal trafficking and just as the majority of Dominicans do not smoke tobacco, so too will the average man stay away from Marijuana.
There is an economic force which keeps marijuana illegal because they are profiting from it.
The number of Big Boys in Dominica who smoke marijuana, does the police ever visit their homes or office.
Dice, praise Jah that you are the reigning King or the system would have destroyed you.
Walk carefully brother, Babylon will strike again.
I have a cousin whose life they destroyed, he is a dreadlocks, everyone knows he smokes, but every time the cops feel like arresting someone, they go and pick him up.
A peaceful man, who commits no crime but simply smokes because of his beliefs.
    This persecution must stop.
By the way I do not smoke and never will I.

Wow!! That’s an idea worthy of public discussion. Actually, Former Miss USA, Vanessa Williams, was stripped off her crown for misconduct committed on her own time. And the misconduct was not an illegal activity; it was immoral and of poor taste. Are there lessons in Vanessa’s legacy for us?

Bro am happy that they were lenient on you. If the item is illegal DON’T mess with it. DA to is only poor people kids that pays for petty crime. The major criminals do triple times worse but the but our justice system play blind and the ignorant praise them like kings. So bro, ALWAYS try to be law abiding despite of the challenges. Remember you are being watched cause they know you are not one of them. Stay Clean and be Seen!!

We thought you were a born again Christian.
But I love your comments. It makes some sense. Hope to see you some time because I could be travelling soon. Dice must be careful. The people loves him and he should not be smoking any weed. The people are not happy with him for so doing.
But whenever you writing comments on DNO Desra do not use your real name. It doesn’t have too many Dominicans with such a unique name and hence you can be targeted. We know that you are a big fan of him like so many thousands of Domnikans.
Hope thet don’t put you in no “jacket song” LOL. You know the seen already about your real father as compared to the fake/jacket one. But such is life.
I hope those other calypsonians don’t put Dice in song as they did Hunter. If it was Hunter that they had catch with weed boy our people would have all kinds of things to say.
So I cana wait to hear what they going to write about for the 2014 calypso competition. I am a huge calypso fanatic and win lose or draw guilty or not DICE is my man. I love you Dice. Hope you child mammy doh get upset with my comments.
