Dominican fingered in Virgin Gorda robberies granted $40,000 bail

Vernon Bernard being escorted by officers out of the court building at a previous hearing.

BVI NEWS ONLINE: Dominican Vernon Bernard residing in Tortola was finally granted bail in the sum of $40,000 surety from Magistrate Valerie Stephens this afternoon.

Police had arrested and charged Bernard along with two minors in connection with at least two burglaries at business establishments on Virgin Gorda.

When the bail application was made by Bernard’s lawyer Patrick Thompson this morning, Magistrate Valerie Stephen’s announced that the defendant was on curfew at the time the incident was committed.

However, in his argument for bail, Thompson said that his client has a powerful incentive to behave himself considering that he has a two-year suspended sentence hanging over his head, in addition to whatever sentence is further handed down.

Magistrate Stephens was of the view that Bernard’s mother was unable to control him, so another surety was sought and examined. His bail conditions are: a curfew from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and he is expected to report to the Road Town Police Station on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Bernard’s lawyer added that his client is an 18-year-old man who is fully aware of the consequence should he disobey the bail conditions.

On at least two occasions, the three are believed to have traveled from Tortola to Virgin Gorda and burglarized businesses on the island. Police investigators made the link after one was seen exiting a stolen vessel and the other two were found in possession of stolen merchandise.

First of all…. I love DOMINICA!!!! My parents are from there and i was blessed to spend quite some time living there!

But this Dominicans living abroad are becoming a pain in the D/ca’s A@# now!!! Every time you look at the news some D/ca national is in trouble with the law….

I know Vernon and akim, its just a shame that they have to make their ”fame” in the news like that.

I use to always say am a Dominica everywhere i go, but now things have changed!!!!!

These people should not have gotten the opportunity to travel…i guess they want to be in competition with jamaica!

And its not in the Virgin Islands alone they get on so stupid, i see it every day here in the US, i can spot them from miles away!!!! And the thing that kills me the most, they’re always trash-talking dominica the minute the land in some foreign country!

THESE PEOPLE NEED TO GROW UP AND BE AMBASSADORS TO THEIR COUNTRY!!!!!!!

Friends, blame the reporter. According to the Oxford English Dictionary (…no less!) a “curfew” is:
“A regulastion requiring people to remain indoors beween specified hours of the night”. Hopefully this will help to mend this young man’s way and we will not be confronted by another “rotten apple” deported back home to infect our local youth with negative and nefarious behaviour.

Must be an error. The am/pm can be a bit troublesome to some people.
So i would want to say its from 7:00 pm (1900 hrs) , to 7:00 am (0700 hrs).
I would also want to say that if he is not a first time offender, give him the maximum sentence.

There should be a system in place to have these people serve a mandatory ( at least six (6) months) term here, after they have been deported for crimes committed in these country.

Not just a six months sitting at the state prison but a farming program where they would be producing fruits and vegetables to place on the super markets’ shelves.

After all, committing a crime overseas’ and making the head line is like committing a crime against the state (Comm. Of Dominica). Let them pay for their crime on their return.

Reading this I would think, that Dominica is a crime free place where only the people who live outside commit crimes, however I have been reading and in the past week or so, five men have been fined or confined for cutlass attacks, stop the hypocrisy and understand that Dominica is like every where else with it’s problems. whether it happens in Dominica, in guada or in the BVI, we read it on the same internet, so stop being so outraged when one Dominican abroad commits a crime, and concentrate on the many who hack their own family members with cutlasses. I would surly rather for someone to steal my material things, than to use a cutlass on me like I was a piece of wood.

Ridiculous !…..you are missing the whole point, One has nothing to do with the other.
Dominicans at home and abroad, were commenting on the crimes that are being commited by Dominicans living abroad. It tarnishes the image of Dominica. It is an embarassment to all law abiding Dominicans living abroad, and causes foreigners to have a negative image and view of us.
Why didn’t you comment on the domestic violence then,if you felt that way about it?
The Dominicans that I know have a very strong sense of National pride, and are very dignified.

A curfew is a time or signal after which a person must remain indoors, so after 7pm he must remain indoors (inside) until next day.

My god another Dominican again? Honourable BVI Judges / Magistrates please give them the maximum sentences permitted by BVI law. These people do not represent anything that’s good about us Dominicans. Are there laws dealing with HARD LABOUR on the books in the BVI? Give it to them. Please do not give these rascals any sentences to run concurrently .
We will wake up one morning and be told we need visas to visit the BVI’S and work permits will be even more difficult to come by. Heavenly father help those of us, Dominicans who are law abiding citizens and residents of foreign lands far and near.
