Dominicans face life imprisonment in St. Maarten

The accused being taken to court. Photo credit: sxmislandtime.com

Public Prosecutor Mr. Bart den Hartigh demanded life imprisonment against Curtley Allison R. and his partner in crime Sherwan R. for the Regatta-murders (so called because they occurred around the Heineken Regatta), rape, three armed robberies and a case of ill-treatment.

The trial lasted from 9:00 yesterday morning until 6:30 last night and it is not done yet; this morning the defense had the floor in the court room to plead their clients’ cases.

The two defendants were brought in yesterday morning under heavy security. They remained shackled throughout the procedure under the watchful eye of members of the Police Arrest Team.

For your info, I did help the girl many times over a period of three years. And another little boy that was with her named Maleki. Once I met them in the Hosp.in Roseau, the boy was full of blood and dog bites from a pit bull. At 11 in the evening, they wouldn’t treat him because he didn’t have an adult with him. The security guard dread them and told them to leave the Hosp. I took responsibility for them and he was treated. I told child welfare and the nurses in the Hosp. I think they should follow thru when they see neglect, the drug addict caretaker resented me for helping. What have you done to help children in Dominica? When they got the girl off the street and back in school she didn’t have her to prostitute anymore. The reason I know this is because a male Dominican told me not to give her money”she is Nasty” and the girl always came to me for money. She is a beautiful girl. Go to Whitchchurch or the new store down by the Market you will see them begging any day of the week. I am not bashing Dominica. It is beautiful I am just telling the facts. If you don’t wake up and smell the coffee you will soon find the whole place full of criminals! And don’t worry I will keep my A… in The States and do us a favor and keep yours there. I left DA last Nov. and find I have more money in my pocket as the only thing anybody asked me for here is a cigarette and I don’t smoke.

SXM continues to be a “nice” tourist destination with NO LAW and ORDER in place. It is just unbelievable how 2 people could commit one crime after another several people could have identified them and YET they were able to continue their Crime sprees
This simply described as this island indeed has NO LAW and ORDER, thankfully I was able to get the heck out of there in the early 90s.

T don’t know how Dominicans treat St M people or visa versa. But I know for sure that when a man raped a girl from abroud in DA everyone hush, even though they know who did it. A next man in DA rape a deaf girl in Da a virgin by the way and police child welfare did nothing! And the community gathered up money to send the boy that raped her abroud. Everyone is so Christian well the bible says expose them! Stop protecting the guilty and start defending your children! The nice deaf girl ended up haveing an abortion, which by the way is against her religion. What can she do with a bastard child? She has no money and can’t even hear the child cry!.What really get under my skin is when I asked her why she didn’t tell me what happened she wrote {I thought you wouldn’t believe me}These girls get punished when they tell how a man raped them, the public would rather say they are nasty or it was your fault. In my ten years there I never saw an improvement, things are getting worse for the children. Trust me! Mark my word that rapist they sent to St Maarten from DA is your next up and comeing criminal in St Maarten! And will most likely get away with plenty as he is tall and very handsome. Mouth full of milk and honey! God forgive them for they know not what they do!

Philipsburg:— Police arrested an 18 year old St. Maarten Academy PSVE student identified as George Mardenborough as the main suspect that shot Guyanese businessman Mark Anthony Deygoo to death on September 21st in his Back Street store. According to information reaching SMN News, the young suspect was arrested at his Belvedere home on Monday evening after Deygoo’s widow positively identified the killer. SMN News also learnt that police is busy working with the French side authorities for them to arrest the killer’s accomplice who resides somewhere on French side of the island.
The 18 year old suspect that is currently behind bars as a suspect in Deygoo’s murder investigation was born on St. Maarten to Dominican parents. Sources close to the investigation said that the young man resides in Belvedere and even though he is still attending school, he is always in trouble and he also has questionable friends, some of whom are currently behind bars as murder suspects.
SMN News further learnt that police got a breakthrough on the case when the widow of Mark Deygoo, Padmini Deygoo gave police a detailed description of the suspect. The source said that police then presented Deygoo’s widow with a stack of photographs of possible suspects and she picked out the photograph of the person who shot her husband multiple times during an armed robbery at their Back Street store.
Mark Deygoo was shot five times by two young robbers on September 21 2011 as he and his wife Padmini were preparing to close their Back Street store. At the time of the gruesome shooting and robbery, the victim Mark Deygoo his wife Padmini and their young daughter were inside the store.
Chief Prosecutor Hans Mos confirmed that Police arrested a suspect that was identified by an eyewitness who was inside the store when the robbery and shooting took place.
Mos also confirmed that the suspect is a student of the St. Maarten Academy PSVE, but refused to divulge any more information on the suspect since the second suspect (accomplice) is still on the loose

Sorry I didn’t realize I had a negative sounding name in this case. I am Gypsy because I move around alot. A term of endearment for me, nuff respect for Them I adopted an armenian Gypsy child when he was 5 years of age. I am a white woman from Canada who called Dominica home for ten years. But to be honest I feel safer in the Ghettos in America and Canada.Anyway just want people to know I think these guys are animals too, and killing them is a free up let them sit in jail for life and think about what they did. I think Johnnie Walker took over and when they sober up they may get a chance to ask GOD for forgiveness as he is the only one,is not for us to judge! If it was, we would all be devine, not true? Don’t fret, those of us who know Dominica know that you have your issues but you also have plenty of very good hard working people and these cituations make it miserable for everyone. Just sad sad sad. Bless P.S. I would like to understand the mask also? To me looks like a modern day hood like when they are getting ready to hang someone? Educate me on this one.

So sorry for the victims. It’s unspeakable but I am proud of the kalinnago who can forgive. Wish we could all be that strong. They are someones children and my heart goes out to the parents. If that was my son I think I would just lay my head down and die. Dominica needs to help it’s high risk youth like the little girl in front of the store in Roseau prostituting her precious little angel body to eat and buy crack for her caretaker. Life sentence???? These ANIMALS (Not Dominicans) should be tortured in the the most violent way, hanged, then beheaded. Bringing such shame and disgrace to their families.

It’s a damn shame when people like to justify crimal actions, especially when it happens in DA talking crap about lack of jobs and the like and politicizing everything. This kind os stupid talk is what gives these animals the justification for their cruel actions. What about a place like SM with so much more job opportunities than DA. Why couldn’t these LAZY bastards find some work??

I’m really angry here because to think there are maybe many other such wicked, lazy individuals among us who at any opportunity may indulge in such wicked, shameful, disgraceful conduct again.

“DEATH SENTENCE” in small communities like the islands where violent crimes affect the whole nation, the sentence should be allowed. such people should be made an example of. Clearly those who do not respect life should have no problem paying the price of death themselves

Sad Situation for all Dominicans at home and abroad. When such crimes are committed by nationals in a foreign land, they make life very very very difficult for Bonafide Dominicans who are honest and hard working. These folks always have those in authority in the other islands looking at Dominicans in a very funny way because of the bad actions of a few. I am more than convince that Dominicans are lovely and blessed people, just that we have a few who are spoiling the future travels of our younger generations. may God bless Our Nature Island! To Dominican Living Abroad:

I too am a Dominican living abroad. I am living in St. Maarten for the past 17 years.
There’s enough proof that they did it. They even confessed to the crime. Do you know when they arrested them it was not for the murder and rape. The dectectives were smart and they swing the questions around. Just to find out they were involved. Here in St. Maarten you don’t hear of anyone getting life. Seeing the prosecutor and is asking for life you should do. These guys are not insane or have any disorder. The knew just what they were doing. They claimed they were under the influence of alcohol but if they were why would they remember so cleared what they did?

I feel for their parents. They have worked very hard to support them especially Sherwan. His mother struggled so much and hard to bring him up and that’s the thanks.
So To you Dominican living abroad get your facts together before you start blah blahing.

Some of the crimes where the victims managed to get away, they did not go to the police to report it. Noone is wrongfully blaming them. Again, they admitted to te worngdoings.

Awa….serial killers….from Dominica? Portsmouth even….All you doh tired make people feel shame? magwesa! comments here saying they were nice young men..these type of people are usually seen as nice by the public, that’s why they can lure people into their car. But if the ones who really knew them would come forward you’d here what i’m sure would be the REAL background stories…disregard for others, petty theivery as children, smiles that do not reach the eyes but with charming words, illtreatment of girlfriends and cruelty to animals are major signs. So here they are giving Dominicans an even worse name as if things aren’t bad enough…they should throw away the key!

Surprised to be hearing bad news about these boys from Portsmouth.. Armstrong Drigo, Curtley Richards and Sherwan R. Sherwan I do not know but Armstrong and Curtley were some of my former students..6th grade level at the present Rosie Douglas Prim. School.
You know when children are around 11..12 years old, how they are well behave kids and then in growing up, all hell break loose. Knowing them, and thinking of their crimes; the big question is what and where did things went wrong.
That would be a good Science Project for students to work on. (Interview parents, friends, visit schools attended, the community and even the prisons where they are kept….)
Nothing is not impossible to receive forgiveness from Jesus and turn their lives aroud.

  56. November 24, 2011

    November 24, 2011

I recognize the atrocities that those men committed and the grief and pain towards their victims and their families, the latter who will never forget how their loved ones died but I am not God. He is the Judge. Furthermore they are at the mercy of the St. Maarteen Law. The Court will sentence them according to their crimes.
I cannot feel and spew hatred towards them and wish them the worst. Our Lord Jesus Christ said: “Vengeance is Mine! I will repay. Let he who is without sin caste the first stone.”
It is sad that once babies and innocent children they turned to a life of crime/ murder and hatred. What possessed their hearts? Well, we know!
How were they nurtured? What caused them to be so wicked? If they were not caught they would continue their pillage of murders, placing fear in those nationals.
While in prison they should be questioned by Social Service or other government officials as they may try to rehabilitate them. They may find out the reason why they became brazen, heartless murderers.
They cannot bring back their victims but while in prison they may have a change of heart. Pray for them.
Our Lord Jesus Christ said, “I did not come into the world to condemn it but to save it. I did not come for the righteous but for sinners.”
I pray, for their sake that their hearts will mellow and they will turn to God.
Some people who commit crimes/murders occasionally ask the victims and/or the families where applicable for forgiveness. They are obligated to forgive them. Some victims who are fortunate to be alive have forgiven them. Those are genuine, loving Christians.
As difficult as it is to forgive, we are obligated to forgive from the heart. We may not be able to forget but forgive, we must, according to Our Lord’s teachings and the Church.
Many prisoners have been converted in prison. They are visited by religious people. May those young men receive this instruction that they may turn to God, repent and save their souls. May God assist them accordingly.

    November 24, 2011

The article keeps on reminding us that these two animals are Dominicans, think they are making sure that the world knows this, and that noone can think that someone from St Maarten could commit such heinous crimes.

It matters not which Island they are from, what they did to another human being was cold and vicious. They are cowards, they needed to commit their crimes as a double act. Serial killers deserve the death penalty, as they dont execute murderers in the Caribbean, give them life behind bars, with no parole.

I feel for the families of the victims, they had to sit in court and hear how their loved ones suffered. I also feel for the families of the defendants, because there is no way they could have seen this comming. None of them would have ever dreamt that they were raising would be serial killers and rapists.

Can’t say I feel sorry for these guys, honestly. Maybe if they’d done one crime, felt remorseful about it and stopped … but apparently they were on a roll, stealing mere dollars, raping and even killing three ppl. This is pure SATAN at work! Knowing both these guys and their families, I can understand how their mothers must feel. When I read about their capture earlier on this year, I was astounded … young ppl, take heed; this is what laziness and envy can do to your soul. An idle mind is the devil’s workshop. Pls, try to engage in something constructive at all times … at the end of the day, it will be rewarding. And why did the article keep stressing on ‘The Dominicans’ and ‘These Dominicans’ … evil-hearted ppl don’t come only from our island. That’s biased, rather defaming journalism, in my opinion.

    • Justice and Truth
      November 24, 2011

      @ Yes Fada

This is to identify the country they came from. In Canada the Media will state “black” and this is bad enough, a direct identity as to their race. In Toronto, when this was stated on TV some blacks and relevant organizations raised objections. The TV Media no longer immediately state “black” except if the Police is searching for them. Then, it will be mentioned with a description of them but not when they commit the crimes/murders and it is reported on TV of all.
They are arrested and imprisonment and are facing conviction and life imprisonment. I do not comprehend why the Media continues to mention that they are from Dominica. How many times the Media has to mention the name of the country? Someone or a group in St. Maarten should inform them about it.

You are worrying about the wrong thing. The media are doing their job. Let them do it. If they are from Dominica what the hell do you want them to say? that they are from SXM??? When St Maarteners commit crimes they alway mention that they are from Sxm if its french side or dutch side. Right now Sxm is facing a whole lot of crimes, and if we don’t mention where the criminals are from. We would automatically think that they are from SXM. I know that you guys are offended by it. But that’s the way it is so deal with it. Those family has a lot more to deal with as we speak…..Those guys are evil wicked madmen. they should rot in prison. Sorry!

      @ me

They are heartless young men. They have put their own country DA and its nationals to shame especially the law-abiding Dominicans in St. Maarten. If there is capital punishment in St. Maarten they will be executed. Would this be the reason why they have already been blindfolded to show that they are doomed?

      @ bella-ann

We in Toronto or Canada for that matter feel the same way if one or a few of ours commit such heinous crimes or any type of crime for that matter. In fact, if they are West Indians, we feel that way for when we are out in public, on the streets or shopping we could very well pass for one of them as Jamaicans. There are times I am asked by some non-West Indians, “Are you from Jamaica?” I emphatically state, “NO!” and give them a lesson about the islands and where they are situated. Other West Indians who are not from Jamaica are also asked this question. A co-worker once asked me that question and I gave him a lecture about the islands and the geographical locations including how many islands there are in the West Indies.
The majority of crimes are committed by people from that island.

There are no winners in this. The victims were treated like animals and violated as such. The culprits will serve the rest of their natural lives in jail. No winners at all. As a Dominican, it’s very sad when I read these stories.

I’m agreeing with you , all that is needed is ‘prayer” There are countless blessings in prayer. let us not forget that, it is not only the families of the victims and victims that are made to suffer. The innocent families of the perpetrators are also suffering too. One never knows when it is their turn. The old folks have a saying that goes, “Le prewel camarade ou pwe defe, prends d’leau wosser sa ou.

      Let us just pray for all involve in this sad and terrible tragedy. God save us all;

They are both from portsmouth. sherwin is around 23 years and curtley is around 31 years.I am really surprised at these guys, i mean curtley committed a crime (i think it was a robbery of some tourist on a yacht in portsmouth and he did his time), but common you made a mistake once, learn from it…you were given a second chance. I remember Curtley went to clifton dupigny college. Right now, you have no more chances, i say lock them up for life.

Pay for your crime by serving the time.. This is shear wickedness from these two lazy big boys!!!! When they want to give teachers rudeness in school and disrespect their parents and brothers this is what will happen to them… I hope other young guys out there who think that giving rudeness, being disrespectful, fighting for anything instead of trying to resolve issues calmly and not trying to earn an education is the way to go; well news flash! If you don’t take pattern on these guys then your life is in for a lot of disappointment in the end since these bad life doesn’t bring anyone anywhere.
