DSC student accused of robbery gets bail

Telford George of Newtown, one of the three men charged for the McMillan Gas Station robbery late last month, has been granted bail.

The Dominica State College (DSC) student appeared before a Roseau magistrate’s court on Monday where his was released on a $30,000 bail bond.

As conditions of his bail, George is to surrender his travel documents, and report on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Roseau Police Station. He was put on an 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily curfew and told not to interfere with any of the witnesses in the matter.

It is alleged that George, along with Elio Edwards and Leon Toussaint had robbed the gas station at gun point on October 20,2011. The men allegedly stole $3,325.06.

According to the charge, the defendants allegedly used force on Wendy Baron, a McMillan Gas Station employee, during the robbery.

Disclosure is set for December 31, 2011 and the preliminary inquiry for February 6, 2012.

Mr. George is not form Newtown. He happens to be living in Newtown through circumstance. Some time in 2011 when he fell in trouble with the law, his grandfather bailed him (remember some time in early 2010, DNO carried a story about a Newtown Fisherman crying outside the court) as there was some stress between George and his biological Father. George’s Grandfather who bailed him has since goen to the great beyond and so George continue to live in Newtown – really terrorizing everybody. Yes! he has girls galore. In fact after he was released on bail he showed up at the college with a smart swagger, totally unashamed to drop of his girlfriend who missed classes just to be with him in court. Wow I want a girl to stand by me even just like her

Some people could jeopardize their entire life and career and their good name when they get into trouble with the Law. Do they not care for themselves, for others and ever consider the result of their actions when they are caught? What a waste of God-given allotted precious life and time. Will he ever be rehabilitated?

It is clear that this one is a repeat offender. It is also clear he has no intentions of changing. That is one of the best reasons for Government to invest in a juvenile facility. No one is going to enforce that curfew and nothing is going to prevent him from doing it again while he is on bail.

They need to bring down the prices on the world creole music festival tickets.. Its around that time the youth with no jobs try to find money to go..give students a special price and that might solve some of the robbery leading up to that date… if we notice that is worst than ever…

    • Justice and Truth
      November 8, 2011

      @ pissed

Thou shalt not steal. If they cannot go due to their finances, then they should not go. If they could have afforded it would this have prevented them from robbing the gasoline station? He committed a serious offence by stealing and using force on the female employee during the theft.
I do agree that the price should be reduced for students. The same should apply for seniors who would love to attend but who cannot afford the price. Probably in future this could be considered.

    • November 9, 2011

So because the price of the WCMF is high, that gives him the right to STEAL!!!!! BS

getting into college right now is not so hard.. like in the days of clifton dupigny college… so saying ‘u is a college student and should know better’ is kinda ‘wrong’… any jack spratt getting into college… not that i don’t want them to… i’m just saying there should be a level of academics to enter… just like all vieux manier children entering d/ca grammar school… it losing it’s status… u should have at least a medium to high passing in common entrance or whatever is used today to enter d.g.s… oh and yes ‘we are special’… is not convent alone lol

    November 8, 2011

don’t you think a better solution to teach a college student who should have known better already, would be to make him go to school while in jail. They could take him to his classes and if he passes all classes with good grades you could reduce his time.
Anybody can go to college… pointing a gun at someone to steal from them and scarring them for life doesn’t deserve bail.

Bail money is only lost if you fail to go to court on the terms set. Therefore the money is not a lost. Now paying a Bail Bonds man is different, because you pay a % of the bail to them.

  28. Satelite
    November 8, 2011

Bull Crap, I can see you are a perosn who do not undestand the meanings of legal terminology. The young man did not have “to pay” the sum of money mentioned. That amount of money is a form of security on his behalf against the name of another person to allow him the chance to be “out of jail” for the time being until the case is heard.

    • B. E .B
      November 8, 2011

In the USA , when ever bail is posted, 10% of the amount goes to the Government, so in his case, the person who posted the bail would loose $3000.00. I think that Dominica should follow that patern

    • Justice and Truth
      November 8, 2011

      @ Satelite

If he skips bail, do not show up and cannot be found, the surety will have to pay that amount to the Court. People take chances when they put up bail money for others.

  29. Oh Oh
    November 8, 2011

What the hell bail? Robbery alone? What was the gun used for?

    • Okay thennn
      November 8, 2011

Robbery is defined as using force. The GUN was used as force!!! Educate yourself!!!! They could have charged him with legal possession of a firearm but I guess robbery carries a long sentence, and is less work for them to do.

      • Tony
        November 8, 2011

Hi Robbery is defined as Using Force to removed property from another but if you are armed with a Weapon or a Deadly Weapon(Which a loaded gun is) then that raises the Robbery to a Fisrt Degree Robbery which would carry a stiffer penalty. The article said he was released on $30,000 bail not a percentage of that, therefore someone either paid cash or some type of property worth that amount which is there to guaranty his return to court. If he do not return to court then they will forfeit the bail.

      • B. E .B
        November 8, 2011

When does the firearm becomes legal?

      November 8, 2011

      @ Bull Crap

I am assuming that the money is for lawyers fees, for robbing the gas station and for what he did to the woman employee. Did they damage the property? If they did, then compensation has to be paid to the gas station owner. This also includes loss of revenue.
Which one of them was the primary perpetrator/organizer of this robbery? It boils down to bad company corrupts. They have to pay the price for their actions.
