Edison James condemns murder of Joe Costello

Costello

Parliamentary Representative for Marigot, Edison James has described as regrettable the murder of Joe Costello, manager of Silks Hotel in Hatton Garden.

James has also called for perpetrators to be caught early and dealt with.

Costello was murdered Sunday evening at Pagua Bay House in Marigot. Rick and Alicia Davison, owners of Pagua were injured during the same incident. James said he has been informed that Rick will “recover fully.”

“It is even more regrettable that it should take place here [in Marigot],” James stressed.

“These sorts of things we really could do without them and I really would wish to condemn in the strongest possible terms this outrageous incident,” he said.

Police have said they are looking into the matter.

It is very sad when anyone whether a Dominican or foreigner is attacked! All crimes must be solved and in particular all efforts must be exercised in particular, immediately, to solve these types of violent crimes. The police force must not sit on their behinds. Are they going to go out into the communities 24 hrs 7 days a week to question the locals as to what they saw? Surely someone saw these criminals walking down the street. Don’t tell me there is not some friend of these villains that does not know. Dominican Police do not wait for some one to come to you! Go out and do the job you are paid for! Otherwise this Island which is not self sufficient will have no foreign exchange income as little as it is right now!!!

I met the man at a family wedding in Ireland and he spent a good deal of the night dancing with my children. He seemed a really decent and good natured person. He Certainly did not deserve this and hopefully the perpetrators will be apprehended before too long.

My condolences go out to his family in Ireland, and australia.

The gentleman did not deserve to die. Why did they murder him? Was it because he resisted their actions? Why did they injure the owners? I suppose likewise that they were angry they met up with resistance. Did they steal anything? They were so bent on committing a crime that they had to murder him and injure the owners. I do not know how they could live with and happily so with what they have done. I can only hope that if caught they will never be allowed out in the public domain.
Let us wait and hear what their defense lawyers which will obviously be paid at the expense of taxpayers say in Court.
No plea bargain for them; either imprisonment or execution. This is what they deserve. Those who live by the sword should die by the sword.
Dominica’s prison is too small to accommodate increasing criminals/murderers. If they are especially young which most of them are in this era and sadly so, they should be rehabilitated; at least try to do so. Otherwise, be incarcerated for the rest of their life and executed if Dominica has the death penalty.

Firstly, I’m very sorry and appalled at what took place in Marigot and we all hope that the perpetrators are apprehended very soon.

However, I have this to say to “Upset”, “get a grip on yourself.”

I have lived out of Dominica in the US territories for over 10 years and for all the crimes that are being committed there, the Caribbean Governments do not issue travel advisories to the US.

We all condemn what has taken place, but there are evil people everywhere. That’s just the nature of man.

We are certainly unaccustomed to such crimes in our country and when they happen, we are deeply sorry and fearful of the future.

However, do not be naive, there is no Heaven on Earth. The world is becoming smaller and the bad influences of the developed countries are seeping their way into the islands.

God bless the family and friends of Mr Castello as they mourn the loss of their beloved.

Get well soon, Rick and Alicia. God bless…

Unfortunately, criminals in Dominica know they can get away with crimes – even if they are ‘caught’. Until the Dominican government enlist an independent police chief from another country who is willing to shake up the force, things will continue as they always have and in the end, everyone suffers.

Just recently 2 of them were convicted here in Antigua for the senseless murders of a British couple and they showed absolutely no remorse for their crimes..they know they will just live out the time in prison easily..

In such times, the Minister of National security should be heard. Its a matter of national security when stuff like dat would take place in the Nature Isle. The Honourable Minister of National security should come out and make a strong statement, and let the whole world know dat there is zero tolerance on Crime. The Police PRO or CHief may make statements and rightly so- but the minister of National security got to really come out and organize a crime fighting task force. Maybe the SSU can have a Special squad named anti crime task force – with special uniform and goood and latest crime fighting gears not forgetting some serious guns as well. So in this regard – i hereby wich the minister all the best in this venture. We all got to say no to crime and stop reacting – we need to be proactive and protective. Blessed Love!

It never fails to surprise me how narrow-minded some Dominicans are. By that I mean It disgusts me.

It isn’t about crime rate. It’s about how foreigners are being SPECIFICALLY targeted for these type of crimes. And obviously the same group of people have no grasp over the importance of foreigners in this country.

    Get on the real subject.

I am terribly saddened by this, and I wish Rick and Alicia a full recovery, and my sympathies to Joe’s family and freinds. he was more Dominican than some of you posting on this here.

Crime is present everywhere, and I dare say Dominica is still one of the more peaceful islands in the WORLD today.

We cannot compare apples with limes, we just cannot. No crime is good, but to expect none is impractical. What is important is the way the crimes are dealt with, the swiftness of the authorities to catch the perps, the punishment fitting the crime, the prompt and active response of the communities involved, the level of compassion and support that goes out to these people who live and walk among us, as residents, visitors, guests.

It is how we, the police and government deal with the publicity surrounding the incidents of crime and murder that should be important.

So, pl;ay your parts, lets be diligent and help the police and give them the information to solve the crimes in Dominica, stop hiding and secretly protecting these criminals, big or small.
Someone, MUST know who or suspect the people did this.

CK, please be careful about how you go about doing research on the internet. I wrote to Nationmaster a few years ago as I discovered that a # of countries in the Caribbean are not included in their statistics and as a result, the few countries like Dominica which are included automatically become ranked highly for crime and murders, etc. I notice that they have placed a note in fine print at the bottom about this reporting issue, but unfortunately, unsuspecting persons like you still get caught. Just for your information, St Kitts & Nevis which was ranked 2nd in the WORLD in terms of murder per capita, was nowhere on Nationmasters list a few years ago, and I won’t be surprised if the situation is still the same. That country has 22 murders year to date and I won’t be surprised if it still remains off the list. A client advised me a few years ago, that he was all set on retiring in Dominica. Unfortunately, he relied on the nationmaster statistics and moved to St Kitts instead and got the shock of his life. He was stunned to find out on his arrival of the number of murders and other crimes that occurred there. He lamented to me then that he had made a serious mistake as it turned out that Dominica was then and still remains one of the safest countries in the Caribbean. I’m telling you all this to advise that the internet is a very important tool for doing research, but it can also be a very dangerous tool as you really need to dig deep to really find out what the statistics represent. It is important for the relevant authorities do their research and see what is out there on Dominica and try to correct it if necessary. I must say that I strongly condemn the vicious attack on Joe Costello and Rick and Alicia Davison. However, as someone who is well-travelled and keeps in touch with the activities on the neighboring islands, I am not ready to condemn my country. We just need to eliminate those bad apples that bring this shame to us from time to time.

This is a very important point. Dominicans need to keep their ears and eyes open to criminal activities. right here and now, is the glaring need for advocacy and patriotism in Dominica, WE NEED THE PEOPLE TO DEMAND THAT SOMETHING BE DONE BY THE AUTHORITIES ABOUT THIS HEINOUS ACT!!! we cannot accept this being done to a local person MUCH LESS a visitor!!! it is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE that our police force be unable to bring these men to justice. where the battle rages, the heart of the soldier is tested. and so now is the time our police department much SHINE!!!!!! NOW WE MUST SEE AN EXIBITION OF THE HARD WORK, BRAVERY AND EFFECTIVE TRAINING THAT OUR POLICEMEN ARE CAPABLE OF, THIS IS NOT JUST A SPLIFF!!!!!
THIS HAS A NEGATIVE EFFECT ON OUR COUNTRYS IMAGE AND MAY WELL HOLD ECONOMIC AND DIMPLOMATIC CONSEQUENCES. FOR MY PART THIS IS AN ACT OF TREASON IN THESE HARD TIMES DOMINICA IS FACING.

You all need to stop over reacting…Natalie Holaway murder did not affect Aruba’s tourism, nor do all the killings in the Virgin Islands, Bahamas, Jamaica, Trinidad or countless others affect their tourism because unlike most people posting here, the tourists recognize that these countries are still safer than their homeland.

This is indeed an unfortunate incident but we need to be measured in our response and realize that these kinds of crimes can only be prevented by providing sensible educational and training options for our youths. If someone is able to acquire a decent living for themselves they have less time to turn to crime.

Remember all the crimes last last – every other month there was a case of shooting, stabbing all kinds of killings – and yet, it’s the same issue… these people are set loose to roam the streets…

when will we all wake up and realise that it’s time we as a people stand up and do whatis right.

This kind of behaviour is becoming far to common. I have reached out to Ross University as well as the Gov’ts of Canada and United States to issue a travel advisory for Dominica. Far too many people are being confronted by criminals in Dom. I myself have been pushed and threatened while unprovoked in front of KFC in Picard. Obviously the actions of a few are ruining it for the greater mass of people but it is clear that nothing is being done. The people who are devious are known throughout the community and are left to do what they want as long as they don’t attack the local population (who are GOOD and HARD WORKING PEOPLE).
Such a shame. God Bless Dominica. Get rid of these hoodlums. Get better Rick and Alicia. Dominica, you better hope that they stay or you have lost far more than a good restaurant and hotel.

When you reach out to them to issue travel advisories, of what good will it be to the nation? While i fully understand that the seriousness of the manner, i see no reason for one to go as far as to suggest that there should be travel advisories. Dominica is far more peaceful than places such as jamaica, SXM, Bahamas, Trinidad and the many other caribbean countries where crime has become a common place. May the good God continue blessing the Commonwealth of Dominica and its people.

Those other countries have a proven record of trying to get rid of crime in the touristy areas. Also, the countries that you listed are tourist destinations, something that Dominica is trying to become. I LOVE Dominica and think that it is one of the most beautiful places in the world, not just because of how it looks but because of the people. People that come to Dominica from elsewhere feel unprotected. Don’t believe that, ask anyone at Ross University or off a cruise ship. In order to gain the trust of visitors they must first feel as though they are safe. I am not slamming Dominica, just trying to improve on its beauty.

You are a wolf in sheep clothing to speak of loving Dominica, yet (AS your own NBC put it: a rare violent incident)yet want to issue a travel advisory to Dominica?

Real hypocrite I must say. We really could do without the likes of you ‘loving’ our country. I’m sure if you step out in your neighbourhood, wherever you live, the incidents of crime there would greater warrant a travel advisory than that of Dominica.

My friend i do agree that violent crime is becoming way to common in dominica and i echo the call for stiffer measures against criminals, the death penalty even, but i think u have gone a little overboard with the calls to foreign entities to issue travel advisories against Dominica.

Isolating Dominica and starving the sector of our economy that depends on foreign exchange will not remedy the situation.

It is what is needed to be done until this sector is safe for the non-local population. I love Dominica. My wife loves Dominica. I hope that this changes so that others can love it and not fear it. MSNBC and other major international news outlets have already gotten a hold of what has transpired. It is now up to the people of Dominica to let officials know that they will not stand for this either so that things can improve. This is not a one off incident. People are being robbed outside of Ross University weekly.

      SO WHY THE ADVISORIES?

It would seem to me that you do not know what you are talking about. Believe it or not, dominica has a far more better detection rate than many of the mentioned island nations.

by saying that they are looking into the matter, i am sure that the men in uniform do not at all mean that they are going to be on their behinds in their offices without conducting investigations. one has to first do required ground work such as evidence collection and statement recording; investigations then progresses with suspects being questions; samples taken with the aim of matching those samples collected from suspects to samples collected at the crime scene. One simple mistake can lead to persons such as Ma Dyre exposing certain technicalities in court and the entire thing would be a waisted effort.

With that said, i hereby urge you to allow the law men to do their work please.

And in ending, i must advice you that your call for Travel Advisories issues against this beautiful land of beauty and splendor, the nature island of the Caribbean where we relive the everyday through adventure, only speaks of ignorance on your part.

this murder is regrettable?? How about “horrific” wicked, evil. The perpetrators are monsters and why haven’t they been caught yet? Come on people… someone knows, that someone should come forth.

That was my thoughts too. When a road sign falls over it is “regrettable”. A man just got murdered and two injured. How about “horrific”!

Words, words, words and more words. Action – unfortunately none!

Now the biggest joke of all: “the police have said they are looking into the matter”. I am afraid just ‘looking’ into to matter is not good enough. By now there should be a full blown investigation and hunt for the thugs. Every day that passes now reduces the chance of them being found and we are left with waiting for the next attack!!

i guess the Police chief will be seeking the assistance from a murdera to come help investigate

The Dominican police are working deligently and hopefully efficiently in this matter and because everything is not published or broadcast doesn’t mean they are lack luster.
There is already enough talk already, and with what happened in a neighboring island (under pressure police apprehended the wrong individual )that is unacceptable in this case
Let the lawmen take their time and give no heads up to criminals trying to leave the country.
You may find that’s not your style but that’s the way it will be done and if wrong info have to be given the press so be it. This is not cable TV,reality show
Everything should not be broadcast or published.
Alicia and Rick keep the hope alive, we will see you in a few.

      • August 2, 2011

dominica police deserve a lot of credit i think the guys are working deligently on this matter not because ur aint hearing anything doesnt mean theyre not working silent investigation is going on kudos to the commonwealth of dominica police force they always seem to critize the police for any thing thought they lack so many resouces yet still they perform their duties make no mistake they willsoon be caught once again we need the death penalty dont care what amnesty international or the catholic church says because they are againts the death penalty
