Ellen Lawrence gets $50,000 bail

Ellen Lawrence

A woman who is facing a charge of money laundering received bail in the sum of $50,000 when she appeared in court on Friday.

Ellen Lawrence, of Bath Road, reportedly owned a Toyota Rav 4 valued at $45,000, which the police allege she obtained from the proceeds of crime.

It is reported that the incident occurred between January 1, 2011 and November 5, 2012.

In court, the prosecution did not object to bail.

Bail conditions for the 31-year-old include informing the police of any change in address and reporting to the Roseau Police Station on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

She was also forbidden to leave Dominica.

The Preliminary Inquiry is set for August 19, 2013.

 I was reading some need on the website and didn’t see anyone else picture posted. We have all made mistakes in our lives and blasting someone’s pic doesn’t help the situation. Maybe desperate times call for desperate measures. Be fair put other people pic up to.

if the definition for such a crime is as such then there are many low income mothers laundering money day in day out just to feed thier children. (you thinking hard?)… Having sex for money is money laundering accouring to the definition given. BON! Jail them too!!! hmmm

i think that the fiu is acting really ridiculous, there are so many people that are obtaining so many assets without proper origin of income and ways to sustain their belongings. This is becoming a poppet show while they are protecting the real culprits and pocketing huge sums under the table.

I know for them to reach to an arrest they have to gather surmountable evidence, but is only neg malayaway they going after.

its really time to set a level playing field

How did they happen to find themselves in that situation? Why were they chosen to perform this illegal activity? Where did the money originate from, i.e., what country? Who is the primary perpetrator of this crime who involved them? Questions and more questions. We are curious to know the entire story from the beginning and how all this transpired. Do not blame us. We are only human. :)

Have you ever traveled somewhere that everyone told you was the absolute best, only to find yourself wondering: Is that all there is?

It happens. Sometimes, the destination in question is trading on a dated reputation it no longer deserves. Other times, you’ve fallen victim to hype, manufactured by the travel industry, gleefully perpetrated by those whose job it is to report objectively. The end result? You’ve now wasted precious vacation time and money.

Here are ten overrated places I’ve encountered, some all too frequently, during nearly fifteen years as a travel writer. If I never see any of them again, I won’t mind at all.

Curious? Read on. (I’ll show myself out.)

Why are you taking offence and dictating to DNO what should be done? Are you a relative or friend? She was arrested and is out on bail. She is not a minor. Know the difference. She is not being judged. It is expected that the pictures and names of those who are arrested will be posted and also published in the newspaper and shown on TV. If they were not found, their pictures should still be posted and published. This is customary. What is your problem?

Its obvious you feel that way because you know her. If it was not someone you knew I bet yuo comment would’ve been “wheres the picture”. DNO has stated time and time again that it is only in sexual crimes the picture cannot be posted until a conviction.

      Its simple English

We will continue to pray for our young people. You should take heed yourself and remember every dog has it’s day. But she has been charged. Most of our young people don’t want to take time and grow, they want everything without working and so that is why they find themselves in such difficulty. ” They want it now”

      April 15, 2013

Why fret? You should know that it goes without saying you will have to prove that the money is legitimate and was obtained through legal means. Generally people who reside abroad may not have this problem.
Take for instance Stanford, the Texan; calling himself a financier. He was not questioned by the Antiguan government where he got all that money. When I read that this rich man was residing in Antigua, I personally thought “I wonder where he got the money and if he is a trustworthy person.” I was suspicious but said nothing. It later proved that he was not. He is imprisoned in a Texan jail and will spend the rest of his life there. He brought down some people with them; those who worked for him and were involved in his illegal schemes.
Bad enough those who invested unknowingly in his illegal scheme lost a lot of money; some, all their savings and others, their retirement savings.

We are just too damn judgemental and those in the big jobs doing the real crime we ignore and make excuses for them.

so people going to jail for having a ride, i blame d/cans for that because they bending over and letting this happen. so what if someone has an suv and there suspected of criminal activity where is he proof, there are bigger matters involving larger amounts but they swept under the carpet and task force wiping their feet on it everyday….. what is needed for this to stop , this up sided – down stuff that is going on in d/ca……. i bet she buying fuel, paying registration and other fees ( we all know that is the life blood of d/ca fees and taxes ) i bet she pay her 98% duty on it when some people skating tax and duty free all day….investigate that task force.

Why is she arrested again? Because she owns a $4500.00 vehicle? Is the what Dominica has become? Why don’t you guys investigate how much your PM got for the sale of land to Venezuela? I guess it’s much easier to harass the poor who are trying to make ends meet.

I think the article said $45,000.

Dorival, your second sentence makes no sense whatsoever. A crime is a crime. The police has reason to investigate and arrest her. Why do some of you question these matters when you should very well know that when an investigation was conducted it is known that she obtained money through illegal means to purchase the vehicle, she should be arrested. That is the Law. Let common sense prevail.

I want to know if a friend or aquaintance tells you they will give you $20,000 if you just hold $100,000 for them for a few days, what would they do?

    You didn’t shoot no one.
    You didn’t kill no one.
You didn’t sell or use no illegal drug.
You haven’t stolen from no one.

In a young ignorant mind you wouldn’t even consider this to be illegal. More so, if the person that offers this to you is known to be pretty financially well-off himself.

I hope all of you that have not been filing your tax returns, and have not been declaring income earned on rental properties and apartments, AND HAVE BEEN MAKING LARGE OFFERINGS TO THE CHURCH FOR A CHEQUES FOR A SLIGHTLY LESS AMOUNT, know that this is also a form of money laundering.

    • Justice and Truth
      April 15, 2013

Jayson, your comments make no sense and do not prove anything. It also does not help those who were arrested, whether they are out on bail.
Money laundering is a crime. They have past the age of reason and are old enough to know that something is wrong somewhere when someone gives them an exorbitant sum of money to hold or ask them to get involved in processing it and hiding it, giving them a share of it for their help. They should have been suspicious.
If someone came to me and informed me to hold money for them or to get involved in such I would become suspicious. For one, if the money is legitimate, the person would perform his/her banking. Our good names are important. Once our good names are tarnished, we cannot reclaim our good names.
I would not want to find myself in a position to be arrested, handcuffed by the police, brought to Court and be imprisoned. They made a grave error and so they must bear the consequences.
To a certain extent we should feel sorry for them and thank God we are not in their position and hope we never will.
This issue has nothing to do with other people other than those who are involved in this crime as also the one who caused them to be implicated in this crime. Therefore, stick to the issue.

If someone I know has something nice or they are looking good, I give them a genuine compliment. This is as far as it goes for me. People must work and make the sacrifice for what they want. They will be happier and peaceful for it as they do and in the long run.
