A woman who is facing a charge of money laundering received bail in the sum of $50,000 when she appeared in court on Friday.
Ellen Lawrence, of Bath Road, reportedly owned a Toyota Rav 4 valued at $45,000, which the police allege she obtained from the proceeds of crime.
It is reported that the incident occurred between January 1, 2011 and November 5, 2012.
In court, the prosecution did not object to bail.
Bail conditions for the 31-year-old include informing the police of any change in address and reporting to the Roseau Police Station on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
She was also forbidden to leave Dominica.
The Preliminary Inquiry is set for August 19, 2013.
we are all free to comment, so why are all these people who has nothing else to do make these ignorant comments, like telling people to shut up it is ridiculous, i think dno should screen the comments before posting them. Other Countries are reading the news and u all are making Dominicans look stupid
I was reading some need on the website and didn’t see anyone else picture posted. We have all made mistakes in our lives and blasting someone’s pic doesn’t help the situation. Maybe desperate times call for desperate measures. Be fair put other people pic up to.
if the definition for such a crime is as such then there are many low income mothers laundering money day in day out just to feed thier children. (you thinking hard?)… Having sex for money is money laundering accouring to the definition given. BON! Jail them too!!! hmmm
Lets go after the lawyers selling the passports…
we know the channel now lets get to the big wigs…
Did they find the laundered money?
D N O , I am just wondering, why did you single out Ellen and post her pic AGAIN with money laundering details..why her?????? inquiring minds want to know….
I want to know to because I was reading other news and didn’t see pictures just hers
What is illegal means? She could have been savin from when she was a child
If she was saving from a child the records would or will show wouldnt it….hmmmmm
Jeff, I’m sure you still believe in father christmas too?
i think that the fiu is acting really ridiculous, there are so many people that are obtaining so many assets without proper origin of income and ways to sustain their belongings. This is becoming a poppet show while they are protecting the real culprits and pocketing huge sums under the table.
I know for them to reach to an arrest they have to gather surmountable evidence, but is only neg malayaway they going after.
its really time to set a level playing field
I would really shake your big toe if i could, you could not have said it better, so dam true.
U said urself, “i know for them to reach to an arrest they have to gather surmountable evidence”.
How can the FIU go after people without evidence????
How did they happen to find themselves in that situation? Why were they chosen to perform this illegal activity? Where did the money originate from, i.e., what country? Who is the primary perpetrator of this crime who involved them? Questions and more questions. We are curious to know the entire story from the beginning and how all this transpired. Do not blame us. We are only human.
Have you ever traveled somewhere that everyone told you was the absolute best, only to find yourself wondering: Is that all there is?
It happens. Sometimes, the destination in question is trading on a dated reputation it no longer deserves. Other times, you’ve fallen victim to hype, manufactured by the travel industry, gleefully perpetrated by those whose job it is to report objectively. The end result? You’ve now wasted precious vacation time and money.
Here are ten overrated places I’ve encountered, some all too frequently, during nearly fifteen years as a travel writer. If I never see any of them again, I won’t mind at all.
Curious? Read on. (I’ll show myself out.)
When alu see people with their SUVs don’t make it burn your eyes it could be their sugar daddy own or their uncle from England.
Hahaha
DNO,i think you should remove Ellen’s photo from your news, because she has not been proven guilty. You all are playing with people’s lives. To all the ones that are making these ridiculous comments, remember every dog has its day. We should all pray for our young people.
i know i was saying the same thing. why are they posting the people pics all over the news. they are just suspected. by the way how did they get the photos in the first place especial Ellen. hmmmmm. i remember not to long with the office that was accused of raping his daughter they had no photo. that story didnt even make up date. but now look how they running the story. they do not even have strong information on the matter but they posting news. shame. is like a beff the pounging. shame. delete my message if you want DNO i speak my mind.
Why are you taking offence and dictating to DNO what should be done? Are you a relative or friend? She was arrested and is out on bail. She is not a minor. Know the difference. She is not being judged. It is expected that the pictures and names of those who are arrested will be posted and also published in the newspaper and shown on TV. If they were not found, their pictures should still be posted and published. This is customary. What is your problem?
Well she has had a court hearing so its public knowledge so they can do that sorry.
@100%DA because is your ban you doh want pic but for others you asking for pic? The law say she was charged so her pic can be shown, now sit down and shut up!
Its obvious you feel that way because you know her. If it was not someone you knew I bet yuo comment would’ve been “wheres the picture”. DNO has stated time and time again that it is only in sexual crimes the picture cannot be posted until a conviction.
Its simple English
We will continue to pray for our young people. You should take heed yourself and remember every dog has it’s day. But she has been charged. Most of our young people don’t want to take time and grow, they want everything without working and so that is why they find themselves in such difficulty. ” They want it now”
Unfortunately she has been charged and that is public information. DNO is within its rights to publish the photo.
These people are the baits I hope the big fishes will be caught later.
So if I come to d/A and have a nice car will I be locked up? Or save 3k a month in the bank? That’s b/s. my last job in d/a was $800 a month. I earn about 10k us a month now. Well with OT. All legal donkeies! Of skerritt!!!
Why can’t you talk and don’t mention the PM well well sir he has shake your dust out of his back leave the man alone and do thou like wise with what you have you will be much happier with life
who gives a rats how much you make.
Why fret? You should know that it goes without saying you will have to prove that the money is legitimate and was obtained through legal means. Generally people who reside abroad may not have this problem.
Take for instance Stanford, the Texan; calling himself a financier. He was not questioned by the Antiguan government where he got all that money. When I read that this rich man was residing in Antigua, I personally thought “I wonder where he got the money and if he is a trustworthy person.” I was suspicious but said nothing. It later proved that he was not. He is imprisoned in a Texan jail and will spend the rest of his life there. He brought down some people with them; those who worked for him and were involved in his illegal schemes.
Bad enough those who invested unknowingly in his illegal scheme lost a lot of money; some, all their savings and others, their retirement savings.
10k a month, mabe you in the money laundering business too, lol.
Stop being an idiot who cares how much u make??? U r the donkey cause is on OT u getting all that sot….
What you need to do is tell us what is your profession since most of your “10k comes from overtime” a month. Idiot
You obviously are in the right place now and you are welcome to stay there. Good luck.
but the woman was working, so you mean thats what it comes to now money laundering even if you working when all you done know the vehicle burn and the real owner die. That is harassment so much other people having big time vehicles though crime even police that leaving in newtown magwaysah
why allu arresting ppl for owning a 45,000 rav. we still want to know who own the villas
I know personaly of some guy in the dicision making in Dominica who owns homes in Miami, will the police arrest him too?..
the thing about dominica is that no matter how much we dominicans try to make ends meet we always make other people money trouble our eyes it’s time we allow the people that work hard for there money to enjoy that money and we go and work for ours.if you are poor no one is saying poor we are just saying get off your couches stop procrastinating and find a job. if you alredy have a job make honesty and trust be your guide
How you know she wasnt working and took a loan? The thing about some of us Dominicns we like to assume that once a person have something is grudge they grudge others, and do some illegal activity to get it. We are just too damn judgemental and those in the big jobs doing the real crime we ignore and make excuses for them.
If she poor how her manage to purchase a vehicle worth $45,000.
Dominican, worry about yourself, some of you like to ask to much question, and mind people buisness. Stop it !!!!!
so people going to jail for having a ride, i blame d/cans for that because they bending over and letting this happen. so what if someone has an suv and there suspected of criminal activity where is he proof, there are bigger matters involving larger amounts but they swept under the carpet and task force wiping their feet on it everyday….. what is needed for this to stop , this up sided – down stuff that is going on in d/ca……. i bet she buying fuel, paying registration and other fees ( we all know that is the life blood of d/ca fees and taxes ) i bet she pay her 98% duty on it when some people skating tax and duty free all day….investigate that task force.
doesn’t the report say “OWNED”?
was it that burnt out RAV4?
just asking?
maybe a few answers please
i love my “PM” lol
Me too he looks like my son so young to be taking carrying those stress let us all pray for him
Why is she arrested again? Because she owns a $4500.00 vehicle? Is the what Dominica has become? Why don’t you guys investigate how much your PM got for the sale of land to Venezuela? I guess it’s much easier to harass the poor who are trying to make ends meet.
I think the article said $45,000.
But yeah, really, why investigate a “poor” person “who is trying to make ends meet” who owns a $45,000?
I mean, how many “poor” people own a $45,000 vehicle in Dominica…..
All of the people who owning big, fancy ride in Dominica are poor… but paying off their loans to the bank… its technically the bank ride that they driving…
Dorival, your second sentence makes no sense whatsoever. A crime is a crime. The police has reason to investigate and arrest her. Why do some of you question these matters when you should very well know that when an investigation was conducted it is known that she obtained money through illegal means to purchase the vehicle, she should be arrested. That is the Law. Let common sense prevail.
the law is the law,its unfortunate that only the poor pays for it while the rich gets a pat on the back
justice is justice i do have children so i could never say any worst about what happen all i could say never let yourself get into that mess again all of them that are putting their 2cnts maybe they have not got caught yet today you are mary magdalene tell which one of them without sin only when we got caught
$45,000. The police know all about this case, more than you do and how she obtained the money to purchase the SUV. There is no smoke without fire.
why put her picture online. is she proven gulty of something. you need to be carefull dno, we are talking about peoples lives on a small island
You dont seem to get it do you? only in sexual crimes they cant put up a picture!! Geez
Young people, please take your time to grow and develop. Rome wasn’t build in a day! Just start to work and want to have transport flashing all over the place. Lord have mercy!
Just start to work?are u high on something?the woman big 31 yrs and working since she 17 yrs…wat the hell u talking about nuh?because u only get to know her just the other day in the job u see her there u think is now she working then or is for EC dollars alone she was working?…that is a dead case….n DNO should seriously take the woman pic down because she has not been found guilty of anything
I hope those young men who are charged for the same crime will receive bail too
I want to know if a friend or aquaintance tells you they will give you $20,000 if you just hold $100,000 for them for a few days, what would they do?
You didn’t shoot no one.
You didn’t kill no one.
You didn’t sell or use no illegal drug.
You haven’t stolen from no one.
In a young ignorant mind you wouldn’t even consider this to be illegal. More so, if the person that offers this to you is known to be pretty financially well-off himself.
I hope all of you that have not been filing your tax returns, and have not been declaring income earned on rental properties and apartments, AND HAVE BEEN MAKING LARGE OFFERINGS TO THE CHURCH FOR A CHEQUES FOR A SLIGHTLY LESS AMOUNT, know that this is also a form of money laundering.
Jayson, your comments make no sense and do not prove anything. It also does not help those who were arrested, whether they are out on bail.
Money laundering is a crime. They have past the age of reason and are old enough to know that something is wrong somewhere when someone gives them an exorbitant sum of money to hold or ask them to get involved in processing it and hiding it, giving them a share of it for their help. They should have been suspicious.
If someone came to me and informed me to hold money for them or to get involved in such I would become suspicious. For one, if the money is legitimate, the person would perform his/her banking. Our good names are important. Once our good names are tarnished, we cannot reclaim our good names.
I would not want to find myself in a position to be arrested, handcuffed by the police, brought to Court and be imprisoned. They made a grave error and so they must bear the consequences.
To a certain extent we should feel sorry for them and thank God we are not in their position and hope we never will.
This issue has nothing to do with other people other than those who are involved in this crime as also the one who caused them to be implicated in this crime. Therefore, stick to the issue.
Mano case
my girl hold strong we all know you got bills to pay
Which adult and employed ones do not have bills to pay? Those who are pensionable also have bills to pay. It is a way of life. This does not mean they must get involved in shady dealings to pay their bills. Those who do and are caught will pay the price.
Never get jealous when you see people have things….the longest rope has its end and the longest road has its bend. WORDS OF CAUSTION
Since childhood my mother said to me as an advice and warning, “Never get envious of what others have. You do not know what they did to get it.”
If someone I know has something nice or they are looking good, I give them a genuine compliment. This is as far as it goes for me. People must work and make the sacrifice for what they want. They will be happier and peaceful for it as they do and in the long run.
Justice system?? if you can arrest the smaller ones, why not target the bigger ones? so is only for the poor it have justice? jail is only for poor broke people? wrong is wrong! but not for one set! wrong is wrong for EVERYBODY!
Only now you notice that? They using the country’s trois mai(Law Enforcement personell) to catch strickly small fry.Cayi, kaka bawi, pisiette, and others. The big ones are EXEMPTED.They’re the UNTOUCHABLES.I’m sure you know or have heard of a few of them. Doh call names, they’ll catch you in the trois mai and you’ll be in deep sh#%.Me my self i’m a mako shat i’m staying under the big stones and rocks.
Ebeh!

Lord have mercy!
