Fort Young Hotel management not responsible for ‘Jah Cure’ burglary

Jah Cure in action at WCMF

Management of the Fort Young Hotel is not responsible for any item left unattended in their rooms.

This is according to a statement issued by the hotel today regarding the alleged burglary of the room of Jamaican reggae superstar Jah Cure last night.

The hotel says such notices are placed in every room and guests should take note of them.

The hotel says the option of safety deposit boxes is available to guests either in their rooms or at the front desk in accordance with international standards and best practices in the hospitality industry, indicating that the artiste could have made use of them.

According to a statement, the hotel’s board of directors and management are “deeply concerned” about what it considers “rush-to-judgment statements being made regarding today’s alleged incident.”

The hotel has assured that both police and management are investigating the matter.

Meanwhile, it is alleged that someone gained access to the room of the reggae artiste at 7:44 pm while he and his entourage were performing at the 14th World Creole Music Festival, and made off with a Rolex watch and a chain, both with a high value.

“It was unconditional disappointment, not unconditional love for me,” Cure said on Mat in the Morning radio interview today. “It was in my bag in the hotel room and it was supposed to be safe.”

“It had to be somebody that work here. It’s very unfortunate. It is something that has never happened before,” Cure said.

“I still love Dominica and I will return here,” he said, while calling for any assistance from the public to aid the police in their investigation in the recovery of his “favorite jewelry”.

To Jah Cure lying, he is not just like you and I! Speak for yourself not all people are corrupt. I dont know him but I can tell you Jamaicans do not wear bling any and everywhere, thats a good way to get robbed and a lash across your face. Any tourist who wears expensive things while traveling is asking for trouble.{No it is not right but its just the way it is]Best he stick with bamboo bling for true. And the employees at FYH need training in customer service BIG TIME!

He should hire a lawyer and sue the hotel. How can the Hotel management say they are not responsible when they suppose to provide security to their guest. He paid to stay at the hotel and now they are blaming him for his lost because a sign was posted in his room. So the management is saying they are not responsible for any crime which is committed on their property. That is insane I would file a civil lawsuit against them and let us see them defend that.

Might be an insurance scam. Turn the proof on him to verify that the jewelry did exist, then see how he wants to proceed with any claims; ie if he persists in his burglary story.

Despite all what the man did in his life, the hotel has nothing to do with it… stop call him bad names because you all are listening to his music. whether or not he left the jewelry in the safe box, HIS ROOM supposed to be secure. I sure if someone robbed the hotel, they would go on each and every blassted camera to find who did it OKAYYY! so talk now….

Apparently, this Jah Cure is a fake. Rasta nah wear Rolex and blood diamonds. Why did he not wear his rolex on stage. He had a simple leader band watch and a liberation band. I guess he wants to portray that he is a rasta on stage….when he really is a bling bling pork eating deadlocks. There needs to be an intense investigation, because if this guy is not telling the truth, he will have to pay for messing with our reputation; he will have to be jailed at stockfarm and fed some fat pork.

Peace be with you jah cure – bling rasta.

    @Reality:

I don’t think the management of the hotel involved were in any way at fault. This isn’t the first time something like this is happening in Dominica or the rest of the world, hence the international standards for hotels with certain STAR ratings. How would more security work? Would they have to post a guard outside his room? Then the guest may complain about privacy. With the electronic keys and the safety deposit boxes and and option of a main safe (vault) in the hotel, i think that there are enough ways to key your possessions safe in any hotel meeting this standard. People who customarily use hotel rooms know this. If you go to a cheap motel you don’t leave anything of value in there. If you go to a high end hotel you use the security measure afforded to you. After all, you are paying for it.

Where is the proof that the artist has produced that the mentioned items are indeed missing/ How do we so quickly agree that a crime took place with no proof of such. Fort Yung’s approach is correct in it’s approach. The artist I am sure is aware of the practice of all international hotels and He should have used the safety box. If the crime was indeed perpetuated it should not be condoned but I’d be careful to pass judgement without proof.

it’s amazing, we spend so much time reading into this story but we cannot take a little more time to do some more research on this matter.

Jah Cure first of all is an artist who was sent to prison for 2 counts of rape, assault and roberry; the man is a thief! The Bible clearly says that you live by the sword you will die by the sword. So, IF he was robbed he is jus getting a little taste of what he put others through.

next, last week Jah Cure’s label released a statement that his new Techno Track was prematurely released and they have no clue as to how… http://www.dancehallusa.com/2010/11/jah-cure-video-leaked/ so they man was coming to dominica with his problem with him and he come dca to pass it out.

interestingly enough Jah Cure was arrested in Trinidad some time ago for failure to pay for a Trinidadian nearly US$20000. http://www.ttgapers.com/News/2009/11/8/jah-cure-arrested-in-trinidad-and-tobago/

Is it just me or are we noticing a trend here? I refuse to pick sides because I wasnt there and I don’t know what happen. All I know is everybody has to get what they deserve. If Jah Cure has to get his watch and chain back he will get them. If he doesnt then he won’t.

While we sit down on DNO calling Dcans all kinds of names it have for ppl all over the world to see, Jah Cure is still out there making money while ppl in St Lucia are dying from the same hurricanes Dominicans wanted to burn DFC for because they cancel Saturday’s show and Dominicans were not sure whether they would see Jah Cure.

Jah Cure and all the other artist you come to Dominica, do not use their best judgment, when they invite people in their rooms. They actually get the young ladies in their rooms, they sleep, if there is an appointment with the media, they leave the young lady in the room and go to their appointment. The young lady then becomes part of the party and enter the show without paying to see the show and remains backstage until it is time to go back to the hotel room. I think there should be tighter policy for these behaviors. I know they have feelings, but must choose the crop they go with.

Oh my! There are some people who are so negative and always think the worst.
It appears that everyone is an investigator. You should all be employed in the Police Force and in the Investigation Department. The various comments make me smile and also laugh. :) Please wait until the investigation is complete. He will be questioned and about those whom he invited to the room and the time he left the room. Did he leave someone in the room?
I have not yet heard about the policy of Fort Young Hotel, if he signed out and in and whether the key was left at the reception desk when he left and when he returned if he had to go to the reception desk to get the key.
If Fort Young Hotel does not have this policy, I recommend from thereon that it implements it.
As for Fort Young Hotel, what is meant by they are not responsible for thefts/lost articles? If per chance one of their employees used a master key to enter the room, they are downright responsible and will have to pay up.
In addition, was Jah Cure advised about not leaving valuables in the room and to place them in a security box?
Dominica being a small country and staying in a reputable hotel he probably never gave it a thought that his valuables would have been stolen.
I have also considered that if he is aware that the jewellery of people could be stolen, he decided to leave them in his room and thought that they were safe.
Those who reside in Dominica are fully aware that there are some people who are bold enough to steal the chains, watches and even purses of others. These thefts have occurred.
Considering that many people visit from different countries for this occasion, who knows how many of those are law-abiding, to put it mildly.
I do think that Fort Young Hotel should be concerned that their good reputation may be ruined by this and they may lose business due to this. All the same, a thorough investigation should be conducted.

What i don’t understand about this robbery i the time frame, it is alleged some one gained access to the room at 7:44 ,what time did he leave the roomor better yet the hotel compound, what time did he arrive at the stadium, how long did he perform ,what time did he return to the hotel , what time did he go to his room, at what time did he discover the items missing, Put all the time together and tell me 7:44 unless their is a electronic system where by you use a swipe card to gain entry.

WHy couldn’t you just leave the police do their do. Why broadcast a here say from jahcure anyways. And as someone said if it was a dominican who has been convicted for rape they would not even get to play on creole fest for free much less to get paid all that money. We in Dominica like what is not ours too much and we wonder why we aren’t on the map.

if this was a crime , then it’s very easy to solve, the only persons who have access to master keys are the hotel managers, the maids has a different key where they can only access the rooms they are suppose to clean which is usually done during the day between the hours of 9 am and 3pm, they also has to sign there name and signature, the time they recieve the key and the time they return it in order to recieve that key. outside companies such as exterminators has access to the master key because they has to spray all the rooms, but they also has to sign name, signature ,time in an time out in order to recieve that key and usually they are accompanied by a security guard, which is also done during the day. so if cure’s statement is true, then the hotel could tell exactly who used the key an what time they used it. the hotels also make it known to there guests that they won’t be resposible for lost or stolen items, its pointed out to every guest and its written in the rent contract. that’s why they always advise guest to make use of the safety deposit box in the room which they have to pay extra to recieve the key or code for that box.
mr.cure is no saint , remember he was onced jailed for robbery/raped is his own country j/a, so don’t be supprised if this is just a stunt to get his insurance to pay for the rolex, every legal rolex owner in the world is rquired get insurance, can’t buy a vehicle from a dealer and drive it out the lot without insurance , same goes for a rolex, cant get out of the store without insurance, all rolex has a serial number which matches the owner. mr.cure has to present the papers of the rolex and picture of him wearing the rolex in dominica and have the police search all his entourage including him before i could blame my people.
every artise comes on stage with there jewery and at a point in the show they hand over jewelry hats etc to a member of there antourage on stage. furthermore if you are coming to dominica with a watch and not planning to wear it, then what,s the point of bringing it. why are you on stage with a fake watch while the other valuable one is just lying around in some hotel room.check the facts people. mr.cure is looking to claim some insurance money or one of his entourage took it cus he didn’t pay them, dno cud tract my ip address , i don’t mind, i will say it on live tv if i have too, i will even say it on re tv if they let me. don’t let cure’s voice full us , the guy is a former raper/robber.
again check the facts before we point our fingers on dominicans or anyone else for that matter.

first of all the man is an international singer and one i believe gone through the law look like in many ways. Has any one ever stop and think the man might have pick up some paroooh to his room for *** and of cause they will steal if they get the opportunity to do so, i am not saying his jewelery did not get stolen it could have happen , people before all that saying Dominican are the worst this and the worst that stop and think, not because he is international don’t mean he is not liable of being a shame to say i pick up this girl i *** her and next thing i know she take my watch and chain. don’t u all know this could happen to. listen up, Dominican need to be more smart than that don’t let people from other countries come to D/A and laugh from their inside believing D/A people are fools the man from Jamaica where crimes are at it pick worse than D/A, i have travel a lot see a lot so i know what am saying.
A lot could have happen that night , the reason i came up with a women he brought to his room is because they are just on one factor, ooooh some body took master key to open room , yes it could be that or many many other things. Dominican speak of intelligence and be smart we are in the 2000 century where every thing is modern, other countries are head smart and on top of it , if they can do it we can to, come on Dominica move forward for the time and date is.

Don’t make excuses for theifs.. U can steal from a drunk, a crack head, the rich, poor etc its still calling stealing because it ain’t yours. Its not about oh he wants to give dominica a bad name, i’m pretty sure this was not his first visit. Why do we uphold nonsense? Some folks talking bout he ain’t a real rasta bec he’s wearing a rolex, are you serious? When you work hard aren’t you supposed to enjoy the fruits of your labor and buy what you want? why are our people so backward. Its time we grow out of that frame of mind we are stuck in. I’m trying to wrap my mind on the approach Fort Young Hotel has taken in this issue. We are talking about the image of Dominica for one ( major thing) and even your image FYH as a famous hotel in Dominica. That statement was uncalled for. Whether he used the service of the safety deposit box or NOT, should not erase the fact that a high profile artist was robbed at the hotel. It is very disturbing to think that, this is the outcome of such a disheartening incident. many may conclude that he may have fabricated the story, but personally I don’t believe so. This is not a light issue and it should not have been dealt with so casually. Dominica is a “developing country” not a developed country. We can’t afford anything to taint the image of Dominica and drive tourist away from our beloved country. This is very very sad.

Jah Cure needs to give a list of names of all the women who he had coming and going into his room to the police. Turning the place into a brothel! How about the one who stole his BB and it was found after she was accousted? How about the number of keys which he requested for that room? Who did he give the keys too? It may very well be one of the women brought in by him or his entourage. All these questions need to be asked before pointing fingers at Fort Young and rushing to judgement.

No one in his/her right thinking mind would leave such a valuable piece of jewelry in his hotel room without having it in a safety deposit box. A box, that you and you only have the combination to!

    @Oh plzzz:

Agree, I’ve been to FYH many times as a Diaspora and the customer service was not up to par for a star rated hotel! For example, hotel employees were hanging around chatting loud and joking with each other in the restaurant front desk area. This was not what I expected….

I think sometimes we think that we are the only ones reading what happens on our island. The bigger picture here is that, this is BAD PRESS for our island. Whether it’s a lie or not! Our island is small, beautiful, and is still considered one of the safest islands in the Caribbean and this is what we market to potential visitors.

We are doing a disservice to our island by posting negative comments about this. As one of our reggae artist Nasio states’ Truth Will Reveal”. Remember we are a refection of our people and what we post tells people about us…

@jah cure trying a thing!: If you had half a brain you would realize that the “master key” is not an actual key. It’s a card that you are issued and you swipe it to open your hotel room. So the records would show what time it was swiped.

HI,FYH it’s a shame, This hotel suppose to be a 4-5 star. hello where are the cameras, check them, The room open with the master key, sorry that an inside job. but valuable stuff like this should be in the safe provided, but why he didn’t wear his accessories on that night. maybe he forget but i hope he learn put your stuff in the safe box, Rolex worth $10.000 us, most people do have insurance on this stuff, he travell alot, his lawyer would have advice him, The Manager who hold that master key need to be investigate, not Jah cure. He is a guest, Some thing wrong, sad bad name for the hotel, the world read about this fyh. I am a dominican living in Europe. and reading this is bad for business, people are not safe in your hotel. next is muder when someone sleeping, he is an Artist, means high security. and if his Jewelries was stolen, I never know dominican as such thieves. Put yourselves in his shoe- You visit another island , leave your room and later find you have been robbed. 85. My2Sense
    November 2, 2010

@Television: You’re right about the surveillance and the need for cameras. Also, if his room was indeed accessed with a “master key”, then brickbats to the hotel for not having a system in place to secure the room keys. But do you want Fort Young Hotel to supply him with bodyguards too! We need to know where to draw the line and how to be objective. If he needed any extra security, it should have been provided by DFC, as he was in their immediate care and were his direct hosts.

Besides the absence of cameras in the halls, etc., the main fault I can think of on the hotel’s part is that they probably didn’t suggest strongly enough that he store his valuables in a safety deposit box. But in the end, there is no way they can force any individual to do what they don’t want to do.

In the end, it looks badly on Dominica as a country…

Keep this in mind though; the story here is very incomplete. There could be other parties involved that we know nothing of. Maybe a recent “girl friend” or a jealous bodyguard, etc. Let’s keep our minds open.

for someone like me who spend 75% of my time in hotels you come to trust that when you leave your stuff in the room it is safe especially if you put up that “DO NOT DISTURB” sign on the door no one is supposed to enter the room not management not staff so if mr.cure did leave his belonging in his room(for argument sake) i think inspite of all their postings management should be responsible for their voler staff. Hotels have a log showing which room is occupied and which is not and when a room is occupied unless you ask for service no one is supposed to enter the room while you still have occupancy of that room…Well although many things are suspect like what time someone entered the room ect ect i still think that it is a crying shame on dominicans….

    @Agree with anonymous:
first off, whomever you are, i would hate to have u represent me in anything. almost all your questions are irrelevant.

the record shows that someone using a master key entered the room at 7:44. this isn’t the psychic notion of the artiste. the hotel’s records show it. thats why he can say it with such confidence. if it weren’t the case, the hotel would have shot it down by now.

-the fact that his room was accessed in his absence creates enough reasonable doubt to support his claim of being robbed.

-to ask when he left or returned to the room is irrelevant. the record at the front desk will show when the key they issued to him was used and a time line would be established.

-if he had left the room unlocked then there would be no need for the use of a master key.

-the fella didn’t state it as a FACT that it was a hotel staff. he was putting forward logical reasoning when he suggested that it is most LIKELY to have been a hotel employee. more-so someone in management.

next time i suggest you take time out to think about the questions before asking them because if u were actually in court your opponent would constantly get on your ass about incompetence, comparing u with your client for not THINKING THINGS THROUGH before proceeding.

    November 2, 2010

It would be very sad if someone actually stole his jewelery from his bag, and even worse if that person is an employee. However, I travel often for meetings both in and out of the region. IN every room I have been I see the notices of safety and warnings to use the safe that is placed in the room. Most hotels will not take responsibility for things that are left in the open room and not placed in the safe.

There is something called being responsible and whatever I think is valuable I place it in the safe. The combination you use to lock it ensures that only you can unlock it. I would be really sad as I said before, but really it would not be the hotel’s fault if the safe was not used.

Every single hotel manager is aware that the persons employed are humans and may touch. They do stress on respecting clients’ personal property, but people are people. Jah Cure is supposed to know better as a traveling artist.

But if someone really stole, WHY CAN’T WE LEARN TO LEAVE OTHER PEOPLE’S PROPERTY ALONE. IF YOU CANNOT AFFORD SOMETHING EITHER ASK FOR YOU – THE WORST YOU COULD HEAR IS NO – OR DO WITHOUT IT!

  99. Truth 2
    November 2, 2010

If the guy’s room was entered with a master key and his valuables were stolen then thats a shame. Shame on the person who did it. But I cannot help but questioning some of the judgements made by such an international artiste who has travelled the globe and in my estimation has stayed in much more luxurious hotels as Fort Young. Now why would I travel with such an expensive piece of jewelery and not found wearing it on the night of my performance? I would imagine he travelled along with the watch for that purpose. Secondly, the hotel gives it guest not only one but two options to utilize the safety deposit boxes in either their rooms or at the front desk, none of which was exercised by Jah Cure. The hotel cannot be held responsible for his neglegence. You can bring a horse to the water but you cant make it drink. You provided the water now its up to the horse to drink or not but you cant blame yourself if the horse decides not too and then falls down.

For those of you who are not familiar with international hotel rules. you are responsible for your personal items. That means even if the theft happened among staff, the hotel will not reimburse you. Many staff are aware of this and they will take advantage of it. It is the law therefore the hotel gets away with it. By the way accusing the singer of being from a country of high theft is uncalled for. You expect a certain level of protection when you stay at any hotel. we depend on tourism for income and i believe we should treat all with respect. Words spread quickly. Reviews are out there and they are being read. If you truly love your country, treat it’s visitors with respect and they will come back. Oh yes they are!….Most definitely, they are responsible for the safety of their guests, and the guest’s belongings as well….. As long as it is on their property, including the rooms. They are responsible, and will be held liable…….Those signs don’t mean a damn thing…Know your Rights, people……
It is a bloody shame that with all those “high profile” artist staying at that Hotel, the security was not beefed up….Management should be ashamed of themselves, and must take full responsibility.

According to the information, a duplicate key, to wit a master key was used to gain access and enter his room. The items in question were in the guest’s bag, where they were subsequently stolen by some person or persons. No one has any right to go in the guest’s bag or bags to search, and or to pilfer.
From the looks of it, indications are, some person or persons who work for the Hotel, obtained a duplicate or a master key illegally(or legally????)….
What was the valid reason for entering the guest’s room in his absence at that time of night?,what was the purpose, but criminal intent?……….You mad man?,..not responsible?………

They are LIABLE,and will be held as such!…They are telling you about signs posted, but why don’t they tell you about the rules and regulations of Hotels, pertaining to employees, guests, guests belongings, their rooms, and privacy?.

It seems to me that we are leaving in a Country, where “theft”,deceit, and dishonesty, are becoming the norm……from top to bottom, and bottom to top!,…..And that, my fellow Dominicans, is very ,very sad….

I agree with the hotel. We need to realize the hotel security is responsible for the safety of guests not there valuables. Do we really expect guards to stand outside an empty room, to protect merchandise that’s supposed to be secured in a safety box.

The reason why hotels have these options is because they will never know what a person is entering the hotel with. Anyone can claim something was stolen. So to avoid fraud and theft they have this option.

Security boxes are for valuables and he has traveled before and should of used his box. If someone stole his stuff I hope they find out whom, that person is giving Dominica and Fort Young a bad reputation.

No matter if your famous or not you have to take some responsibility for your own negligence especially since the hotel is following international policies.

Fort Young Hotel has been around for decades and we have not had such negative publicity. This is Dominica not Montego Bay. Come sing and leave. Go bellyache somewhere else!!!

Too much blaming…Everyone thinks he/she is a qualified investigator. Let the parties involved do their work. Let’s withhold our comments until we have something substantial to comment on.

On Wednesday we will celebrate 32 years of independence, let’s stop this bringing down each other. Let’s promote our beautiful nature isle via sites like these. Let us all be agents of change, Dominica is OURS, our own to develop, cherish and protect. So my fellow citizens, before we come here and do irreparable damage to our country’s image, I urge you to think twice before selecting the “submit” button.

Happy independence my fellow brothers and sisters…the Nature Isle is ours, let’s show her our utmost love.

Jah Cure you claimed to know the time your watch was stolen and it’s at a time you were on stage performing . As such i’m led to believe that you had persons in your room before and after you left your room . Also i’m persuaded that at 7:44 maybe someone called you to tell you it was done or the persons who were present in your room took your rolex . I refuse to believe your statements and accusations made against these hard working and trust worthy staff who’ve never had this situation ever , but with a Jamaican .
Let summon our people to quit ye like fools , listen to the situation before you quickly mesmerize and tarnish the image and integrity of our wonderful nation . This man who performed was given a safety advise upon his entering the room at FYH . Dubbed “safety tip for storing jelwery re-use of safe box .” Jah Cure refused to yeild to the advise given . Rather he assumably left his room headed strait way to the WCMF arena where he performed during the time he claimed 7:44 his rolex and chain were stolen .
D/cans have you ever questioned why he never mentioned the time he returned ? DNO which is becomed popular needs to improve upon their collection of reports so they too can be concise with editing what we read lest we all pass as holligans not properly informed . He returned to his room knew watch was not there and chain too , jumped to conclusion theft , because some of us make pple out there believe D/ca is law-less and crime out of order , so they come to do just that make us notorious criminals and out of order .

I’ve listened and also read the Cure’s grief over his what he considers to be “theft ” in a hotel room which he stayed in at FYH . According to Mr . Cure his watch was stolen at *7:44 in the said room , * whilst he was performing * at WCMF . Two things to pick up from his statement , take some time to absorb these statments carefully as spectating P. I ( s ) .

Questions to be asked and answered

1 . Mr Cure is a well known and an international reggae artist and from what I’ve heard performed beyond expectation . What time did you leave your room Mr . Cure ?

2 . It’s possible in times like this Mr . Cure with your adrenalins speeding up Mr . Cure , anyone can forget their doors opened and haste to the arena . Having these expensive jewelries , with the options of securing jewlry given to you by the Management of the FYH , why didn’t you take advantage of it , and further , why did you even think it was better to leave it in your room , considering your person internationally ?

3 . Mr . Cure , did someone from FYH , call you to inform at 7:44 that your room was burglarized and your Rolex and chain were both stolen ?

4 . At 7:44 Mr . Cure , you said that a staff of FYH , who had a masters key entered your room and according to you took your Rolex watch and chain . Was there anyone in your room with you before you left for WCMF performance and after you left Mr . Cure ?

5 . What time did you return to your room Mr . Cure ? When you got back to your room what was the first thing you did ? Was there anyone in your room with you at that time ? When did you suspect your watch and chain stolen ? What made you conclude or alledge that it was an act of theft from staff at FYH ?

6 . What time did you end your performance ? Were accompanied to your room by anyone besides yourself ( ie , security of FYH , staff , friends or women as appetizers ) ?

That is really a suspect story. As a Jamiacan – from the land of voleur – he would know the importance of securing his belongings.

Dominicans we must learn not to wash too much dirty linen in public. Not that we would encourage any thief if there was one, but in this case I would err on the side of innocent until proven guilty.

I honestly do not belive that Jah Cure would leave such valuables out in the open at a hotel. Ordinary people do not leave their money or valuables in hotel room much for these items that are expensive. I honetly belive that he is LYING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seems like Fort Young Hotel (FYH) failed to realize that he wasn’t some ordinary guest but rather an international artiste. They should have mechanism in place to protect such a guest. So you mean to tell me, besides his personal bodyguard(s), FYH didn’t provide any additional security for the guy?!?!?! Such a shame! So there wasn’t any surveillance cameras in the hallway leading up to the Deluxe Oceanfront Rooms? Why were they so quick to defend themselves instead of being neutral about the situation until it was rectified.

I’m sure the lack of security bodies and/or surveillance cameras don’t go accordance with international standards!!!!!!
