Government seeks French assistance in locating Shanice Jemmott

Jemmott

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said government will be seeking assistance from the French in the search for 15 year old Shanice Jemmott who has been missing for one month now.

Skerrit said the new approach comes on the heels of information received that Jemmott may be in the neighboring island of Guadeloupe.

He said police have also put in place a high level team to coordinate efforts relating to the search of the missing teen.

“The fact that she is missing is a concern for all of us.” the Prime Minister said. “The police have followed several leads and people have been calling with all sorts of information but we have not been able to find her. There have been word that she might have had gone to Guadeloupe and we have asked the French government to help us out with that.”

Skerrit said the situation is very serious.

Most of you are bashing the pm its not his job to look for shanice
But still his making an effort to give a helping hand . Good job skerrit , besides
If the parents are so concerned why don’t they take the extra mile
And go look for her nothing beats a trial . They want our help and prays but
That won’t help if they sitting her and saying she’s in gwada or not .

With regard to Shaniece’s disappearance the people making odious remarks should refrain from doing so for the sake of Shaniece’s family, as it cannot be easy for them day in and day out , not knowing what has befallen her.

Our children no matter good or bad belong to us and at he end of the day we cannot disown them no matter what.

Mama moi toujours dites moin, si ou par sa dites bon par dites mal.

As a concern citizen leaving aboard I think we should all stop the bashing and concentrate on the safe return of this young girl. This child could have been our sister or even our daughter. I remember once in Antigua this young lady from Dominica went missing so many things were said about her, even to the point they thought that she stoled her boss money and run back to DA only to be found couple of days after dead in a pineapple field. So please my people just for once stop focusing on the negatives and think positively and pray and trust God that this young girl is safely returned to her parents.

Why are people puting such negatives comment on here like saying the child went with her man and they have no solid facts on that. I mean lets be real it could be any of us in this crisis. have a heart.

A friend of a friend’s daughter went missing a few weeks ago in the US and since you have to wait 24 hours before filing a missing person’s report she took to facebook. She asked all her facebook friends to post a pic of her daughter as their display pic and within hours she was found. Maybe we need to try this. Dominica should have asked for assistance from the rest of the caribbean a long time ago…I pray for her safe return every chance I get.

The problem here with the PM we are not seeing is this if the PM does not get involved I am assuming nothing happens in Dominica. Seems like everything I mean everything PM has to speak and action. No one else has authority. PERIOD.

So Pm take as much time as you want and deal with the issues when you can – SO WE LIKE IT.
There are no Ministers – just pay check collectors, bench warmers and chair occupants by the way Chief of Police you too – otherwise you would be the one making the call here.
    THIS IS DEMOCRACY IN ACTION!!!

I agree. The PM should not worry about DA’s crime, curroption, economics, education, etc., etc, ect… Just stop working on everyting required to run a COUNTRY and didicate all your time and government money to finding this one child. Don’t even ask the police chief to do his job because in America…no…I mean in Canada…no…England?…no…Israel?…no…New Zealand?…no. You know something? Could someone please tell me the last time a leader of a country has done this? I know…I’m ignorant. I just don’t want to bash the man if he is taking unprecedented measures to find this child.

The main issue here is SHANICE not skeritt……99% of comments here are about skerritt.we need to keep praying dat she is ok and pull together as a concerned country to try to find this girl.Contact our families abroad epecially in neighbouring islands and put our computer to good use.

I was one of the first one s to ask to pray for that child, but, now I think otherwose. I really do not believe that mamselle was abducted. If she chose to run away why should they even look for her? Why should the PM be so involved? Don’t we have a police force? Where are the police and other investigators? Why is it the PM’s mission to find a wayward child? I am so sick of that story and I am sorry to sound so mean and uncaring, but, it seems that the child is waaaaaay to grow for her panties. Leave Shanice alone and she will come home dragging her tail behind her.

    March 17, 2011

Mr Skerrit as a muslim who has absolutely NO political affliation to any party in this country. I must say that I am very disappointed in your sluggish respond in regards to Shanice. I’m sure if someone from your relatives or someone close to you had disappeared you would have acted way sooner than this. Shanice is a native Dominican and a citizen of Dominica and you should make it a national priority of finding her, your department of security should have worked more ardently than this.

To only have Kelver Darroux speak to secure his political points is unacceptable. Ministry for security affairs should have made this case a top priority. Is that how citizens of Dominica are treated or more specifically how a young teenage woman is treated in amidst the new tune in our public psyche right now is ‘woman time.’

With that said, the events have already occured and now you are working with the French authorities. We hope that she is found and returned safely to her family.

I wish the Prime Minister well in the search for this young women. However againg this case should shine a light on the Prime Minister to come to the conclusion that Dominica needs qualify Investigators. The police department need more resources and a strong leadership. I call for a crak down on police drinking whether on or off duty. Their should be a special investigator unit, one that are able to understand the method of investigation, the important of field notes, special finger print investigator, one that can dust and and left the fingerprint without mistakes including good report writing, all in all the police department in Dominica needs help in all area of criminal investigation. In my point of view the Government of Dominica needs a Good District Attorney. Those that are representing the government need more training or get qualify individual (s) that understand how the court system works. A small Island like Dominica where every body knows some body should not take three weeks to find a missing person this is beyond my imagination. It come down to poor police work, and lark of exploring other avenues of the investigation. My intention is to return to Dominica. However, I want to explor the oportunity in the law department to better serve the government in the investigation process. In my last comments I encourged the prime minister to take the investigation to its next level. I am glad that other avenues are been search. However, this investigation should but more pressure on those that was with this young women. Hold them in custody while the investigation is in progress. The court should grant the DA the request to hold any suspect through the investigation, if the DA ask such request.
I wish you well in your investigation and may God bless you and the people of Dominica. Good Luck.

Is either the PM is very lackadaisical, just doesn’t care or was hoping she would have been found before he would have had to show any concern. Almost a month? Ah way eh, after almost every social agency and NGO made a call to assist. Is the government machinery and national security that slow?

“No Name”, u just talking 4-creez. Skerrit is not doing anybody a “favor” by seeking assistance from the French on behalf of Shanice. Don’t come running ur blabbity-blah about “his own kind heart”….It’s his freaking DUTY, since he was elected as our LEADER and let’s not be biased or political in our opinions. We all agree that the weight of this lies on the police department, but as the PM of a small nation such as ours, as well as a former minister of National Security he should’ve understood the magnitude of this crisis within a week of it’s commencement. A 14 yr old child is missing….how often do we hear these things happening in DA? Let’s not compare to the other island or even the US where these things and even worse happen every other hour. Come on ppl. Stop posting silly comments all over the place and let’s treat this as a case of NATIONAL concern.

The PM is not obligated to get involved ! That’s what the police and other ”special task force” units do.

      • Just wondering
        March 17, 2011

Who else but the PM could ask for help from other nations? Fact is Dominica has very limited experience and expertise to deal with missing children cases, crime on a whole in fact. He should have enlisted help from the beginning. That’s all people are saying. Maybe if that was done to help look for her in Dominica, she may have been found.

Anything that is of national concern should be of concern to the PM. Elected by and obligated to Dominicans. So yes, it is his obligation to get involved. Same goes for Obama and any other elected official.

Anyway better late than never. Hope the kid is found – Dominica is way too small a country for someone not to have seen her please!!! And it is high time the police stop pretending like they do not now anything. Everyone is a village knows something and for some unknown reason has anyone noticed that the police seems to not even know – are they so far removed from the community? This is rubbish you know! Firstly as family friends we know the situation! Please print my comment it woud be more than helpful. Even the PM said the police should let the public know about person who is with her!! Check it out. Action needs to be taken and the child is not in Guadeloupe! We all very much feel so! Just think about it. Shanice left her home in her school clothes she did not take anything with her at all, she did not tell a friend!!

Jesse I am somewhat curious but I am going to ask a few questions and hope that you would be willing to answer them for me. Did you or her family members searched her school bag before leaving home the day she disappeared? Do you think a 14 year old who wants to do whatever she or he pleases would go to a friend and say well today I am leaving the country? Did her parents give her money for recess or did she have her own money ? Hey anything can happen, she can buy herself an outfit on the way, she could have decided oh tomorrow I am skipping town. We do not know unless Shanice is FOUND. If she is found alive ( I am wishing and hoping) guess what the Dominican public in and out of Dominica would LOVE an explanation, don’t you think?

How do you know that she is not in Guadeloupe? IF Shanice is a runaway, then runaways do not usually take an overnight bag when they are planning to bounce.

Tetemorne my exact reaction here. Runaways just go and go far too until they are ready to come back home. I think her family know where she is, give information and spare us grief you know. CMON ALREADY

I believe that’s a good move from our PM….talk, or rather “gossip” of she migrating to Guadeloupe surfaced within 7 days of her disappearance, so maybe that move should have been made sooner….but nonetheless, it could be the breakthrough in this situation.

Thank you sooo much for getting in touch with the French on the matter.

so u honestly think the pm wasn’t on top of the situatiin? that’s y we have designated duties to different sectors. the pm alone cannot run a country, he alone cannot solce every problem. the news that shanice may be in a foriegn land is a whole other level. at this point his help is needed. this is a whole new level. skerrit should have done something about japan sitaution too??? send some ppl? all welfare organizations in d/ca have been on this case. would saying something sooner have made any difference? from the minute that shanice was reported missing it was on national radio. id he’d said something would more ppl have listened? really? u think?
