Gov’t committed to fighting crime

youth crimeThe Government of Dominica is committed to the fight against crime and will continue to provide support to the police to ensure that this fight is won, according to  prime minister Roosevelt Skerrit.

Skerrit, who is also Minister for National Security, has pledged to “lead the charge for a safer Dominica,” saying all Dominicans must play their part to eradicate criminal activity in particular drug and gun related crimes.

“I want all of us to stand in condemnation of the drug trade. The drug trade brings guns to our country and guns are responsible for criminal activities,” the prime minister stated. “Therefore it is important for us to put our voices together and have a very loud echo in our commitment as citizens, as a country to stand in defiance and in condemnation of any illegal activity in the country.”

The government has made available to the police the necessary resources for fighting crime to include the building of new police stations, providing adequate transportation for police officers in the performance of their duties, filling vacancies within the police force and training police officers.

Hello and good morning my people. First I would like to say that I have been coming home twice a year for the last four years and I have never felt unsafe in Dominica. This is not to say that there isn’t any crime but rather I haven’t seen or been the victim of any such incident. For me its driving in Dominica that seems to be a problem because many drivers speed on very narrow roads. Now base on what I read on DNO it seems like drugs and guns are a problem for some of our citizens therefore I hope our Police Department will do what ever they have to do to curtail this type of criminal activities.
I think the Government should impose a law enforcement fee of one dollar a month on cell phones and used that fee to better equip our Officer to fight crime.

Good news, but dose the Government understand the meaning of the word crime? Should the Government determine how should be investigated and punished for crime? Please Mr. Government allow the POLICE to do their work without your intervention and do not restrict THE LONG HAND OF THE LAW from arresting crimes in high or low places in Dominica.

If the government is really serious and committed to fighting crimes they really do not have to go very far from the peoples house to start. They just have to start dealing with those that oppress us and do not want us to say a thing. I am referring to those that violate our constitution and when we the people try to protest in a very peaceful manner, they sending their war like, blood hungry, criminal officers armed with machine guns and all manner of dangerous weapons to shoot us down like agooties and manicoos in our own country. Committed to fighting crimes?

I am happy to hear that there are still some God’s followers that are willing to stand for what is right because alas those that are supposed to be part of the church and call themselves spiritual leaders have forsaken the cause of Christ and instead, have decided to enrich themselves while the nation is quickly going down the drain.

skritt you cannot be prime minister and minister of finance and minister of security,

America and the rest of the Caribbean are you all taking notes because the people of Dominica needs your help.

we cannot protest peacefully, because snipers will shoot us down, the police is instructed by one man only the prime minister to shoot its citizens down if they protest, if they speak out in public if the return broken items to Chinese stores if they fight for their land , that the prime minister blatantly take away from them and give to drug dealers to plant on.

this man is a dictator and he is moving rapidly ,

Hello and good morning my people. First I want to say that I fully agree with you. Now I have always complain that once some one is elected it seems like they end up holding at least three positions. This type of arrangements stifles our economy because there are less job for people who are qualified. I say the Prime Minister no matter what political party he or she is from shouldn’t hold three such important positions.

AH!AH! Dominicans , wake up wake up. Country people go back to the soil !I begging before it is too late. It is the only way that Dominica will survive what that Devil Skeritt wants to do to Dominicans ,
Does it not occur to Dominicans and the Caribbean nations what this man is doing and moving towards in his aggressive manner ?

Soon America will have to come in as they did in Grenada. pray it will not be too late.

the prime minister of any country is not an island. There are a number of ministers that make up a government in power ,which means each minister is given a portfolio. Skerrit read our lipou cannot be prime minister and minister of national security and minister of finance.

guns dont kill people, people kill people…. People perpetrating violent crimes are desperate people.. whatever they need or want the money for… but they reach a point where they feel the only way to get them money they need or want is through drugs, violent crime or prostitution…. these people know what the root cause of the proliferation of these kinds of activities are.. but they just play conveniently ignorant of the cold hard facts….In a small country like Dominica with under 70,000 population, and so many desperate people choosing to live on the razors edge???? Something is wrong my people, and undeniably so.

The first sign that Government is serious about fighting crime will be the instituting of stiffer penalties for crimes against the person. This will be followed by and include adequate or meaningful compensation to the victim. House breaking will be treated less casually and dealt with on the basis of scientific research on the effect(Psychological and otherwise) of house breaking on the victim. A routine conversation with the average criminal will reveal that there is no deterrence resulting from existing penalties. They are all too willing to make the sacrifice. Can you believe that the average is five years for murder? This one is thanks to the court of appeal.

“What esles do you need Skerrit?- Minister”

Tony said I like to criticize Dominica, and Dominicans, he is correct, however I only criticize when I have a legitimate reason to do so, as I am about to do in this case regarding the quote above. I see something which seems to be a trend in Dominica at the moment, one idiot did it and many others followed.

Notice in the sentence in the quote above after Skerrit, there is a question mark; however; the author also hyphen minister. That person who wrote that as far as I am concerned did not even finish elementary school, because if they did that person would know that the hyphen is often used between parts of a compound, and not in the way they are using it.

Another person wrote “was against drug is and will continue to be nothing but a joke………..victimless crimes just like prostitution……………….drug is”

As for the above with the long line of periods, I will not even comment on that except to say such nonsense represents nothing, except it allows us to discover that the people who write such nonsense are the less educated people of the worst! Some people tend to confuse the “dash -” with the hyphen, the dash however in a sentence usually marks an abrupt change, or break in the continuity of a sentence.

Someone should advise these dunce people that the use of the comma may serve a better purpose, since the comma is used to separate main clauses joined by coordinating conjunctions such as and, but, or, nor, or for, and sometimes short parallel clauses not joined by conjunctions.

I know I am going to get plenty of thumbs down on this one; but I do not care, some of you are just too dunce, and not matter what you writ eon a computer it will just prove your stupidity, instead of making you smart.

    No name no warrant eh!

I do not have a BMW, nor a Mercedes Benz, those are not the ones like to drive, some of them are classy too, however, they do not contain the power I like, I like to drive those that gives me over two hundred miles per hour, those that go from 0-100 MPH in five seconds, or less; and most likely fully convertible, or T-top, semi-convertible.

And by the way I never, in all of my born day carry a basket of brad on my head, certainly I carried plenty of Bananas on me head you see!

        Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

I never forget my past, good or bad, and that’s what causes me to strive for better in life all the time, you are the second person I read talking about this bread thing; (I do no where that came from oui!)

In any event if life ever get so difficult for me and I need to return to Dominica, and engage in my former life, like planting fig, and carry on me head again, by then I will be a little old man, but I will gladly do it. God will not let me into a situation like that again in this life.

Well sir you talk about People use of the English language and a specially grammar and punctuation. In response to Dina post in your first sentence you left out the letter (I). Now does that say anything about your education our your understanding of the English language. I say no rather it show you that we all make typographical errors.

      • October 25, 2013

        Dina.

Mr Telemaque do not own a BMW or a Mercedes Benz rather he owns a Motocycle and a convertible Ford Mustang. I went to a function in California this year where I met him and I was very surprised to learn that he was the one that pulled up on this loud Motocycle. I actually thought it was a teenager who showed up on this noisy Motocycle . What grown adult would want a vehicle to go from 0-100 in five seconds in a metropolitan area which is so crowded with traffic and pedestrians.

      • Francisco Telemaque
        October 24, 2013

But you see Tiny, nothing I said has anything to do with a typing error you know; you do not understand what I conveyed, because if you did, you would have refrain from going crazy with those periods in your sentences, which makes nonsense whatsoever.

If I write Dominica……………….is on fire, and I space then add ………….., that would indicate maybe Left something out in the sentence.

That is not what you are doing; and it makes you appear to be someone who has absolutely no concept of the English language, and simple penmanship. At lease all of what I conveyed in my first submission was taught to me in elementary school in Wesley, as a matter of fact at a level of what we term those days “Standard 1

And in the days when I went to school in Dominica, we did not say ” Form 1, 2, 3, ect, ect,. We went from Stages 1, 2, and 3. When you got out of stage three (3) we went to “standard 1” that’s when you know you were getting ready for the big times, by the time you got to Standard 7 you were ready to graduate elementary, and move onto Secondary School if your parents could afford that, and you were capable of passing the entrance examination to attend Secondary school.

In those days if you were a man and Roman Catholic, you were destine to go to SMA. If you were Methodist you were destine to attend DGS, Catholic girls were destine to go to the Convent High, while all other girls would probably end up the Methodist High School in Roseau.

Our educational system has long changed in Dominica, however, the fundamentals I would hope remained the same with the exception of “Caribbean New Math” I anticipate the way the English language was thought when I went has not changed.

I took three different levels of the English language here in California, at college level, and the only thing I found to what is taught in the Caribbean is that some of their words are spelt differently to “Cambridge English which we taught in my time at home, and they use the “is” where “are” should be used.

Now: “we be jamming” I argued with an English professor that the correct way should be ” We will be jamming.” He told me if I wish I can write it the I wish, however “we be jamming is correct., stuff like that might be no big deal, but what you are doing, you do it because you do not know any better.

        Sorry!

You seem to have a “higher, mighty than thou’ attitude and it stinks.

yes, you can correct people but to come on here and assume this air of superiorty is very unbecomign and says alot about you as a person.

Sometimes, you have to realise that 1) yes, some people are not as educated as the rest
      2) some people just write how they want- and not have to follow the rules and be proper all the time
      3) some people could careless.

If you want to be a grammar, english teacher nazi.. you might need to change your attitude.

      • Francisco Telemaque
        October 24, 2013

Yes indeed, and that is because I am better educated than you; and so with every confidence I can point out the ignorance, and stupidity of the less educated people like you. Many of you Dominicans fail to realize that it is not only stupid Dominicans like you who read DNO.

What your stupidity impressed on most people, is that all Dominicans are dumb, and ignorant. I know that patios is all most of you understand, and speak best, and some may have difficulties expressing themselves in the English language because of that.

To those who are unable to utilize the English language efficiently; I suggest they try to develop their language, or English skills, before they jump on a computer and embarrass our nation with the crap they write on DNO.

Rather than consider me arrogant; you should be very happy that I have the ability to point out what you fail to recognized, rather than try to insult me; perhaps you should try to produce and submit something more positive than I wrote, the fact is you might be one of the fools who wrote what I have criticized.

If you have nothing better than what I wrote to contribute, simply shoot yourself in the your foot, and shut up; you do not even have a name, so why even bother to sound off?

By the way since we have a community college at home, rather than Petter, going to St. Martin to try and get students to enroll at DSC, perhaps you should suggest that he encourage your kind to enroll at DSC, because that is what a community college is all about, there is no age limit for night school, and college attendance.

In that case I am sure some level of English classes may be part of the curricular, as in curriculum, and taught at DSC.

      “not matter?” writ eon”

The above were on your last sentence. You also make errors. Who is perfect?

You spend a lot of time telling people off for their spelling and expression of words. Simply correct them and leave them alone! No need to insult them like that.
In some cases, they are typos. Go easy on them.

There seem to be a problem whenever I write there is someone making part of my writing wrong. The first words I wrote were changed to make it look like “You do not make me laugh.” Someone is doing something wrong.
Words are changed and placed where they should not be and where they do not belong. Some of the words are also duplicated.
I have previously stated that DNO’s Server may have a problem or that someone is playing mischief at DNO’s office. This may also occur to others who comment but are not aware of it.
As there is a God above who knows, sees and hears all things, if this perpetrator continues this, he/she will caught sooner or later for it is no joke.
It is unethical and making a mockery of us while we write, using our God-given precious time, taking the time out to write, to comment. We are not paid for it. Therefore, whoever is doing this is out of his/her place. Whoever it is may be able to see what is being written.
When we comment, they should not interfere with our writing as we write. There is some hanky, panky which has been going on for some months, as I have observed. On one or more occasion, I have addressed this issue to/on DNO.
I do not know if my complaints in the past were given to management and higher up management at DNO. Something will give, as we say in Canada and in the US. There will be an end to it. God is good!

This Gov’t is double talking, becuase we all know about all the high profile cases in recent years in Dominica where they directly instruct the police to either turn a blind eye or to adjourned the cases until it go away.
So I find it very hypocritical for them to come now and talk about being serious crime fighters.
How can you fight crime when we can’t even diferenciate between who is police and who is politician?

    • Truth Seeker
      October 24, 2013

What we find “hypocritical” is that until now, the Law Enforcement Officer in Chief, Mr. Skeritt refuses (some will say has not yet seen the need) to use his office as a bully pulpit to truly denounce and declare war on crime and criminals.

Instead of working with law enforcement, court officers, social scientists, medical practitioners, church officials, and the rest of civil society in fashioning a comprehensive crime fighting mechanism for the whole country, Mr. Skeritt continues to hem and haw.

Current efforts by Mr. Skeritt – a police station here and another one there, and utterances made at their official opening – is only a piece-meal, half-hearted commitment to stemming the tide of criminality parading loosely around the country.

The fear of crime – yes, we said fear – that one feels these days when going about our legitimate business in the country is real. Probably not so for Mr. Skeritt, who we know is protected by the full collective force of the state, which is the Police. Mr. Skeritt is immunized from that fear that we all know so well as we walk the streets of Dominica.

Aside from feeling and being secure in the protection of the Police, Mr. Skeritt probably knows too well, and for other sinister reasons, that he is one of the “untouchables” living amongst us. Too much has been said or leaked in the public, hinting at less than stellar behavior by Mr. Skeritt while in public office.

The question must be asked then, why has Mr. Skeritt, to this day, not taken a more publicly robust and no-nonsense attitude against crime running amuck in this country?

We wish to take this opportunity and remind Mr. Skeritt and his supporters they should take heed and build a country that they too will be compelled to make life in once they leave the protective cocoon of the office they currently occupy.

A word to the wise, somebody once said, is sufficient.
