Gov’t tackling crime – PM

Attorney General Levi Peter is one of those leading the initiative

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says the government is making a concerted effort to tackle rising violent crime including attacks on tourists.

He says a Cabinet organized Community Outreach Programme on crime and violence is only one of the initiatives being taken in that regard.

Meetings have already been held in the Carib Territory, Colihaut and Calibishie.

They all have the same theme – soliciting support, cooperation and assistance from the wider public to curb violent or criminal behavior.

“The whole idea is to let people understand that crime is a societal problem which requires a societal response. Spending a lot of time blaming others is not going to solve crime,” the Government Information Service quotes the prime minister as saying about the initiative.

“It is about each one of us recognizing that we have a part to play towards fighting crime and this is what we are seeking to do,” he explained.

The problem of crime will always be an inssue when there is so many corrupt cops in the force. Cilvilian will not speak up when they have information from fear of being found out because the very same police officer inform those criminals of the people that gave information to the police. It is very alarming when you see, police officers, some of them high ranking, paying frequent social visits to the homes of people involve in crime and drugs.

Okay, I’m seeing here people are talking about CCTV, forensics etc etc.

Question: Why is it that America has F.B.I, forensics and all the latest technology yet the crime rate is so high yet in a place like Saudi Arabia where their technology is not all that with regards to forensics yet their crime rate is very low?

Technology does not decrease crime. One may “catch” criminals however it doesn’t curb crimes and these “first” world countries are prime examples.

It is a healthy spiritual moral conscience instilled in our children and youth which will curb crimes. When there are no ideals and morals from the homes and communities then morality goes out the window.

I agree wholeheartedly. Crime prevention starts in the womb. A woman’s personal environment is critical to bearing healthy, moral children – even before birth. The reality is: it takes a mother and a present, involved, father to raise healthy, moral children. Single mothers do their best, but a child needs to be raised by his father as well – not just visited once in awhile by him. If anyone is against the idea of gay marriage, then they should also look carefully at bearing children with NO marriage and absolutely no commitment by that child’s father to their wellbeing and moral upbringing. Children learn by example and by being loved in a very real way by both parents being involved in their lives. I think this is the answer to controlling crime – not more police or government action. Conscience and the desire to do good for your fellow man begins and ends at home.

A man offered his assistance to the police re the GON Emmanuel firebombing and attempted murder. What has been done? So does the police expect the public to have a burning inclination to help.
I am of the view that this government is just paying lip service to this crime wave on island, but deep down they don’t care a fat.

What have been the main causes of the increase in violence and crimes in Dominica? I mean all kinds of crimes !!! Unless a comprehensive diagnosis/analysis is made, unless the truth is accepted that there are many factors in play, and until Dominicans all decide to denounce all crimes in toto and demand justice at all times, the road ahead will be bleak. No piecemeal attempts would do.

Who is meeting those who commit crimes in ‘high places’ to curb criminal acts and to get them to desist from such irresponsible acts? Those who dare expose or express their views against corruption and criminal activities are chastised, So much for help from the public in fighting crimes. What about the confession from a member of the Dominican public about the firebombing, horrible criminal act? There are numerous allegations, much evidence, examples for so of corrupt practices, criminal acts, “White Colour crimes.” No investigations in several cases. Investigations become stalled or tainted in some.

Was Tiyani ever commended by those in authority for conducting meetings with communities and culprits in an attempt to curb crime?

Will slot casino gambling decrease crimes, gambling, money-laundering, create meaningful employment for youth, will curb anti-social behaviours?

Growing the economy, investing heavily in agriculture, manufacturing, tourism (eco-Tourism Nature Isle Brand),thereby creating employment and our own wealth, must be the way to go. Authorities must be seen by the public to seem to want to fight all crimes and to be far away from engaging in criminal or illegal acts or rubbing shoulders with those with reputable deeds. The public will then have the trust and confidence to play a more active role.

When the people see the “FEW” are being protected because of influence and power, even when they disobey the laws, people will not be so cooperative.

As far as the gambling is concerned, in the Bahamas, only tourists are allowed to use the machines and gamble. It would be best if DA implemented that same rule to save the innocents who will get robbed or killed so fools can gamble.

The police is calling on the public to offer assistance in various investigations. However, the police has failed to mention ways they intend to protect those persons who provide the evidence. I would not want someone to become the target of a crime after providing the information to the police. I notice that lately criminals are only getting a “slap on the wrist” or Bail after the case is tried. and guess what they are out on the streets in no time to come after people.

That’s it??? Really? What about installing CCTVs, more police officers, an increase in street and foot patrol, a SECURE crime tip hotline so individuals are protected, reshuffling the corrupt police force starting with the TOP, pressing charges against known perpetrators, better resources to probe crime scenes – you know a forensic lab, and soo much more. In 2012 you talking about society and stopping crime? A Joke Dat Man? Use de 27mil so that this unsafe haven may once again become safe!

Community is involvement is important as law enforcement can not do it all. Its all important for general self awareness and enhanced employer responsibility. However beyond that government must address publicly plans for a more responsive national emergency contact number, more present, mobile and armed police, improved prison conditions (need a new prison), forensic facilities and police training; enhanced monitoring of known trouble spots, use of modern technology in crime fighting, law enforcement legislation updates, including gun control laws, and a judicial system that is more efficient and not clogged with petty non criminal issues. Criminals must be on notice of harsh sentences and must feel the threat of serious and swift repercussions, which will make them think twice.

    April 12, 2012

I welcome the initiatives of the Government to fight crime and violence in the Country.

I think we need to pass laws especially for the “THIEVES” who casually walk in and out of peoples home like its their property stealing money, food, valuables etc. This is invasion of people’s privacy. This is not a good feeling. So include a law to “Mark the thieves – brand them – cut off hands or fingers, given them a special tatoo on their face by their nose so all can see, please. Or once you do not belong to the area give us the authority to use your license gun to shot them. This is getting rampant, people have to put purglar bars like you in prison. Do something. Police please dress like them thieves to catch them, do something please.

Until the Police arrest those behind the GON Emmanuel attempted murder on Christmas day 2010 then it will be difficult to see how law abiding citizens can cooperate with that kind of police force.

The public confidence in the police force in general and the Police Commissioner in particular is very, very low.
