A 30-year-old Grand Bay man who blamed his parents for his crimes last week, re-appeared before a Roseau magistrate today on a theft charge .
Marlon Charles Stewart is facing a sentence of over seven months in prison after pleading guilty to the theft of a DVD player from a Grand Bay shop owned by Maria Merrifield. The item was worth $350, according to the court.
The police prosecutor informed the court that the complainant had locked her shop at 9 p.m. the night before the incident and found that her shop had been tampered with when she returned at about 7 a.m the following morning. She then made a report to the police.
When confronted about the matter, the defendant admitted to the crime.
“I take some oil and the DVD player. I hide the DVD player, and when I go back for it somebody take it,” The defendant told the police.
Just last week Stewart appeared before Magistrate Gloria Augustus on counts of resisting arrest and beating a police officer with his bag at the Princess Margaret Hospital on January 5, 2010.
At that time, Magistrate Augustus ordered the defendant to serve a suspended sentence of three months for one year for the charge of battery. Meaning, if he got into trouble with the law within one year, he would serve a three-month prison sentence.
During his court appearance today, the man again blamed his mother for his actions.
“I know where the DVD player is. My partner that take it. I can get it back….I didn’t mean to go and burst the place…because my mother make me vex….” the defendant told the magistrate today.
Magistrate Augustus slapped the defendant with a three-month sentence which will run consecutively with the previous sentence and any other sentence he may have had in the past.
He was also ordered to pay compensation for the DVD player forthwith or face an additional six weeks imprisonment.
“My mother have the money over there,” the defendant told the magistrate after listening to his sentence.
