In excess of $3M to be invested in police stations

Efforts are being made by the Government to actively suppress criminality and enhance national security.

This is according to Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Roosevelt Skerrit while giving the 2010/2011 budget address last week.

In that regard, the prime minister stated that $3.8 million has been allocated for the construction of new police stations in Grand Bay, La Plaine and Calibishie.

“A contract in the amount of $3.8 million was recently signed for the construction of a new police station and inspector’s quarters at Grand Bay. Instructions have been given for the design and cost estimates of a new police station at La Plaine; while a decision has already been taken for the construction of a new police station at Calibishie,” the prime minister stated.

The design work for a new fire station for the Melville Hall Airport has also been completed, PM Skerrit noted, adding “tenders will soon be invited for the construction of that facility while a new fire station is to be opened in St. Joseph this month. Work is ongoing at improving the facilities at the State Prisons.”

“One incident of crime is one too many and we are therefore taking measures to actively suppress criminal activity and enhance national security,” he stated.

We only see the need for better Police Stations when our children or family members are placed in the cells that now exists at the present buildings we call poice stations. The conditions of these cells are not fit to put an animal. When police stations are built its not for the police only but for the public they serve so if we would like things to remain in the 1960’s fine, just remember, the cells are built to hold human beings and the stations are to serve the public so if its bad its bad for the police who work there and for the individuals they will keep locked up when arrested. We all should encourage more investment in the police, especially when you have men living in vielle case but working in grandbay etc and working for more then twleve days (not eight hour shifts) night and day, before seeing their kids and wives. These guys deserve more salary and some more time off to spend with their families. Good start mr PM. Now see that you can do about their mortageg payments and allowance for those working in Out Stations for lenghty periods. Peace

With all the police curroption talk and inquiry into the police force AGAIN (#3) will anyone start thinking that police officers spending ten, I mean ten days at a police station then get four days off deserve more than $150.00 allowance on a salary less than $2000.00. An adult man with wife and children in most cases leaves his home at one part of the island go to another part for TEN days.

Thats no excuse for curroption, but is like rat guarding cheeze, get real these guys deserve more I mean much more no matter how we feel about police any reasonable thinking or should i say patriotic Dominican knows that.

I would like to hear reputed men who stands out for justice like mr. Behenzin and Weeks speak on behalf of the men who cover their backs on a daily basis in a positive manner SOMETIMES.

all we speak about is station andvehicles then guns for police to protect the public but what for them to take to their families …….absoloutely nothing. people they cant feed their children on police vehicle, gun and new stations. Thats the reality of the situation.
