Kingshill man fined for cocaine, marijuana

A 23-year-old Kingshill resident  has been fined $1928.90 by Magistrate Candia George for possession of cocaine, possession of cocaine with intent to supply and possession of cannabis.

Basham Julien was arrested and charged on May 1st, 2012 at Bath Estate where he was chased by members of the police Drug Squad.

According to the police, the defendant had in his possession 27 grams of cocaine estimated at about EC$500 which he threw over a galvanised covering when he was approached by police.

The drug was later recovered and brought in to the police headquarters.

Also in his possession was 5 grams of marijuana and $426.90.

Julien’s attorney, Bernadette Lambert pleaded to the court for leniency for her client.

She informed the court that he was the owner of a small business and is currently pursuing a diploma in business.

The magistrate in her ruling warned the young man from appearing in court again and urged him to stay away from anything illegal.

Dealing marijuana is bad enough. It is a “gateway” drug. This means it is often the first drug a person uses.
It is part of the larger drug market and often sold along side cocaine and heroin. This make it easy for those who smoke marijuana to transition to the harder drugs.

Cocaine is dangerous – especially crack cocaine – and damages the brain in a way that alters the personality. It has been known to change respected businessmen into violent criminals. Here in Canada we know of a successful businessman who began hanging out in bars and smoking crack. He became a serial adulterer. He paid a man to kill his wife, was convicted, and died in prison.

To win the war on drugs marijuana must be recognized for its harmful potential and treated accordingly.

Those who traffic in drugs must be sent a message that tells them this is not a the way to go.

CAN U BELIEVE IN THIS MODERN TIMES WHEN COCAINE ARE DESTROYING THE YOUTHS THE FINE IS A THOUSAND DOLLARS..OMG..ONLY IN DOMINICA..THINGS WONT CHANGE..

Few people know the damage cocaine does to the brain and how it destroys the personality. When they think drugs they think recreation and party time. They do not think of memory impairment, young people dropping out of school, girls selling their bodies in the streets to buy drugs, deaths from over dosing, a policeman being shot in an alley, organized crime, and drug wars.

Nobody want to be a kill joy and rob you of your good times. But the recreational use of drugs is so harmful it calls for an all out war against the business. Those who crusade for the decriminalization of drugs are the users, those who stand to gain financially from the market, and politicians on the take.

I spent three summers ministering in the streets of Brooklyn, N.Y.s gangland to the burned out victims of the drug trade. Please don’t waste your time calling me names or badmouthing my ministry. I have no time for that.

can never happen to me for one simple reason I DO NOT SELL DRUGS!!!!

He is fortunate he is residing in Dominica. Once caught it is a serious offence. Obviously his plan was to sell them.
There should be no leniency for $500 worth of cocaine, marijuana which was in his possession whether it was the first time and he threw them away when he observed the Police approaching. He knew he was wrong.
Consider the cost if he sold them on the streets or elsewhere.
What type of diploma is he studying for and what type of business he plans to open? Unless he is rehabilitated and changes, he will continue plying illegal drugs trade.

Wow…slap on the wrist for a coke dealer..and people are outraged at crime? Coke heads will lie, cheat, steal, rob and kill for their next hit. He probably makes more money in a day than what he was fined. Get ready dominica, as the country is saturated with coke the crack heads are next…if that’s not happenning already. Was he forced to give up his dealer for such a lenient sentence? Let’s hope so.
