La Plaine man jailed for fraud

A man who posed as a Human Resource Manager of Royal Caribbean Cruise was given a seven-year jail sentence in a Roseau Court after he pleaded guilty to two counts of theft and one count of intent to defraud.

Jason Kurt Fontaine of La Plaine was sentenced by Chief Magistrate, Evaline Baptiste.

According to court documents, on February 21, 2013, Fontaine arrived at Classique International Hotel in Marigot, checked in and explained that he was a representative of the cruise line and was looking for prospective employees.

He also said that he arrived in Dominica via a helicopter at the Melville Hall Airport. Apparently a helicopter had landed at the airport that day and Fontaine used this as a cover to carry out his scheme.

After checking in at the hotel, Fontaine began meeting and interviewing potential clients and in the process collected $801 from one victim and $3,000 from another.

However Fontaine aroused the suspicion of one member of staff at the hotel when he was overheard saying in his room, “This s**t keeps getting better and better.”

The employee alerted the manager who called the police and Fontaine was arrested.

By that time he had collected well over $3,000 from victims and had also racked up a huge bill at the hotel for meals and accommodation.

After his arrest Fontaine said to the police, “I am sorry … let’s get the matter settled out of court.”

He jailed for 1 year for the theft of $801, 2 years for theft of $3,000.00 and 4 years for the charge of intent to defraud $3,202.

Reports from the US indicate he has been arrested for robbery and impersonating a public servant in New Jersey.

Wake up people to the times that we are living in.
This is not the first time this is happening and it will not be the last. Therefore, let us all take this situation as a teaching moment. Things people will do for money. Some will kill their own relatives to achieve it.

This situation has take on a different tone, life and mud slinging. Some of the sentiments are directed to the marigot people, about how they got fooled, after holding to the claim that educationally they are the brightest parish, in the country. Where is all the hate and malice are coming from. If your forparents had those sentiments ,it was all in the past. We are a new generation with better commmucation skills and understanding. The age of innovation and the fast growing technological world we are living in, we have to put away those childish thoughts.

Jason Fountaine, plot was foiled, by the same marigot people who had a gut feeling that something was not right. If you want to call that intelligent or insight. if that individual did not foiled the plan, we do not know how many other people he would have fooled or on the negative side , getting himself hurt. When you take away a poor man’s hard earings, there is no telling what that person can do.

Let us stop the biases and prejudices on one parish against another. We are all Dominicans living on the smae land. Do not forget when election time coms around we want to vote for the candidates that are going to move the country forward and not only looking out for the people that voted for him or her.

What he did was wrong and deserves his punishment but listen to me. A murderer or a rapist would not even do that much in jail. Is it because the law places more emphasis on material possessions than the lives of others or the livelihood and the joy of growing up as a young girl o boy? Why is it that we see a more fiercer law approach towards crimes that deal with material things like stealing but my friend’s murderer is walking the street freely? All crime is crime but why is a murderer entitled to a better treatment than someone who is most likely circumstantially unwise and falters and end up in this kind of situation. Has he killed o raped? Has he raped a young tourist in front of her parents? And remember it can happen to anyone of us. We just need to remember that we are all humans so we will not lose our proper judgement and never you think you are too strong or too good to fall to such things. If you do, be careful because you might be next.

That’s what i’m wondering, what happens to criminals who serve time abroad and then get deported to Dominica…Like a convicted Paedophile who was deported from the UK back to Dominica in February,2013, is he deported to pick up from where he left off…OH!! he started in DOMINICA..LIKE Jason, the man is a HIGH Class (criminal/Paedophile, he will work his way from the head of the family down to the baby…like Jason he is coming from abroad and our Gullible people will believe them…and the TRUTH IS he/they are penniless criminals from PRISON..something needs to be done about DANGEROUS criminals that are deported from other countries…AS FOR THAT PAEDOPHILE, he is famous in Dominica very well know from ROSEAU people need to be aware and be warned…he is no better than jason…Jason is sick and needs HELP…he will serve his time and be out on a NEW scam…THAT IS HIS MIND SET-HE WILL ALWAYS BE THINKING OF NEW GAMES/crimes…AND THE PAEDOPHILE WILL BE LOOKING FOR NEW VULNERABLE FAMILIES TO ABUSE…LETS STOP THEM…COME ON DOMINICA DON’T HIDE THEM…EXPOSE THEM…that SEX BEAST is evil he is calculating and will groom his victims they are intelligent people they do their reseach…let’s not allow them to get above us…another TWIST FROM JASON…jason is ON the inside THE PAEDOPHILE IS ON THE LOOSE… :(

    • Jay
      March 6, 2013

For the sake of our children becoming a possible victim of this person, please mention the name of this peadophile so we can be on the alert. Please, please do so if you care, which I believe you do.

    • LOL
      March 7, 2013

you need two comments because a paedophile cannot be compared with a thief. I prefer someone scam me than abuse my family. So speak out the name of this person if you care for people more than material things. or i’ll assume you dont want to give out your own name by mistake :D :)

I don’t know Jason personally, but from the comments on this board, he seems to fit the profile of the classic sociopath (Anti-social Personality Disorder – APD). He needs therapy. I hope he can get the help he needs in prison.

    Profile of the Sociopath:

Some of the common features of descriptions of the behavior of sociopaths.

    Glibness and Superficial Charm

    Manipulative and Conning
They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims.

    Grandiose Sense of Self
Feels entitled to certain things as “their right.”

    Pathological Lying
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.

Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt
A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at their core. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.

    Shallow Emotions
When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion it is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. Outraged by insignificant matters, yet remaining unmoved and cold by what would upset a normal person. Since they are not genuine, neither are their promises.

    Incapacity for Love

    Callousness/Lack of Empathy
Unable to empathize with the pain of their victims, having only contempt for others’ feelings of distress and readily taking advantage of them.

    Poor Behavioral Controls/Impulsive Nature
Rage and abuse, alternating with small expressions of love and approval produce an addictive cycle for abuser and abused, as well as creating hopelessness in the victim. Believe they are all-powerful, all-knowing, entitled to every wish, no sense of personal boundaries, no concern for their impact on others.

    Early Behavior Problems/Juvenile Delinquency
Usually has a history of behavioral and academic difficulties, yet “gets by” by conning others. Problems in making and keeping friends; aberrant behaviors such as cruelty to people or animals, stealing, etc.

    Irresponsibility/Unreliability
Not concerned about wrecking others’ lives and dreams. Oblivious or indifferent to the devastation they cause. Does not accept blame themselves, but blames others, even for acts they obviously committed.

Lack of Realistic Life Plan/Parasitic Lifestyle
Tends to move around a lot or makes all encompassing promises for the future, poor work ethic but exploits others effectively.

    Criminal or Entrepreneurial Versatility
Changes their image as needed to avoid prosecution. Changes life story readily.

Marigot peeps always pride themselves that they are the mst educated in DA( inmy book that was once upona time) is like being the best merchant in Roseau then came the chinese and they went out of business. lol! The bigger joke is a man from the east fooled em.
The east still rule. Let me hear you eddie et Al plus all the big mouth marigotians. hehehhehehehheehe marigotians get taken for a ride. In the land of the blind the one eyed man is king. Once marigot was settled by the methodist people who brought education to maigot if they were the ones with school how can the rest of the nation compete? now the playing field has leveled off and see what you got a Laplaine man easterner send em to shame. It reminds me of Nigerians boasting who is from thre three in the north etc.

Jason migrated to NJ a few years ago and was deported after doing so much crime. His father was a former police officer who served well, then later migrated to St Croix….where he and the rest of his family lives. This man was well raised by his parents. It hurts to see how children can turn….all because of greed and wishful thinking.
He is really good at what he does. He has no sympathy for no one.

If this man has indeed prior convictions in the U.S.A. it would mean that he was expelled by that country and sent back to Dominica. Had we been informed of this the public could have been spared being conned by this individual on home soil.
I would urge the Minister of national security to publish details, including photo i.d’s of those of our citizens with convictions in other countries that are sent back to Dominica so the public may be on their guard and forwarned.

Since these details are available on the internet I see no reason not to do so.

Con men are not ordinary everyday people. They are smart and full of creative intelligence. He is going to Stockfarm land even from there he will con people. These people are skillful at gaining people’s confidence and this is the basis of their operation. There is another group of people who are no different from people like Jason. I am talking about politicians. Need I say more – think about the repetitive lies , the coverups etc. The only difference in Jason’s operation is that he is protected by lawyers and the justice system so he must put distance and time between his victims. Politicians on the other hand have the luxury and protection of the justice system. Politicians perfect their craft by telling 10 lies and by the time people knw the truth they have already told 10 other lies so the people are always playing catch up. Just take a look at how a certain senior counsel does it – text book dictator style. When all is said and done the politicians ride off into the sunset and the end up with words ” boy them fellas there” .
Politicians are more than happy to see people like Jason incarcerated because a thief don’t like to see another he can’t control carrying a bag but the politician will allow others that he can control to steal so as to insure loyalty.
A guy like Jason goes for instantaneous, quick fix loyalty then he administers the venum, the politician administers the slow and torturous method.
There is this famous story of this Colman who once conned a woman and left for Miami. He then sent her a post card of a monkey in a wheel chair and 10 years later he was deported back to Dominica in a wheel chair. Every con man got it coming- take note politicians.

This must be the same guy that defrauded my GrandAunt when my mom passed away. He drove all the way to her home claiming he was a cousin(my mom was a Fontaine) that came to the island to attend my mom’s funeral. He just had to come to sympathise in person and that his vehicle is low on gas because he did not anticipate the long drive because he lives in New Jersey. He then borrowed $100 from her and said he would pay her when he returned to attend the funeral service. He then went to another family member and said he has two relatives stuck in Antigua that missed their flight and he needs help with getting them on island for the funeral service. Luckily, I had another cousin there that chased him away and told him don’t ask for money when people are greiving. When this cousin started questioning him about how exactly he(Kurt) was related to us, he just left.

He defrauded my elderly aunt when we had just lost my Mom and we were all greiving. My aunt cried and said he will get what is coming to him one day for his deceit and it looks like he just did. I really feel for the other victims of this guy. He deserves to be locked up for a long time.

Indeed, there was alot of misinformation on the media and blaming of the authorities

Jason Fontaine is a wicked . He was deported from the US for the same nonsense he is caught up with today. A child who was well raised by his parents, and today that’s the embarrassment he has caused his family. This man has defrauded many people of money, even one time ask a business man in town for a pair of shoes in favour for dinner on a cruise ship where he claimed he was a manager. This man has never worked on no cruise line…..but continues to defraud people. He pretends to be a policeman and fool a lot of women…… alas. They should really throw your keys cause you have now become a menace to society.

now this is justice. good 7 year sentence. just wish gun and drug crimes could at least attract a similar length instead of the 2 and 3 year detention.

Jason needs to be treated by a psychiatrist. This is not normal behaviour. Once Jason starts to talk to you you get a sense that he’s not in the same world as you are. I think he needs help. He will do it again.. just a game to him.

A friend had this on her facebook in relation to this story….Cha,Z, you heard the story???? Was just listening to Politics…..Apparently, a chopper landed on the island. The gentleman said he was a rep from Royal Caribbean. Customs never got an ID or proper documentation from the person. Now they have no idea who came to DA to defraud the people of their hard earned money, claiming to get them jobs with RC. Can you believe this. No wonder most people believe Bubbles own those Villas. SMH! Gullible set of people.

Alas, you see how political we are

    • yeah
      March 5, 2013

and you take it off on FB to bring it here for what reason?

      • IPO
        March 5, 2013

Because people take everything and make politics out of it.

    • bone
      March 5, 2013

It didnt say he came on the helicopter, which he didnt! It said “Apparently a helicopter had landed at the airport that day and Fontaine used this as a cover to carry out his scheme”

    • Mwen
      March 5, 2013

so where is the politics in that? I think we should blame to police for not informing us on what is going on.

    • lang dough
      March 5, 2013

if the talk show did not make a big issue of it, all now so this man will be out there commiting more crimes, so look at the bright side of things. Its public pressure that gets the best of the authorities, hypocrits like you on the other hand causes laissez-faire performance.

    • WE good wee
