Lookout for motorcycles with sidecars – police

A high ranking police officer here is warning motorists to be extremely cautious when approaching police motorcycles with sidecars attached to them.

This as the vehicles will begin patrols in and around Roseau from Monday, December 23.

Ninety motorcycles were donated to Dominica in late November by Chinese ambassador Wang Zonglai, as a gift from the Chinese government.

Superintendent of Police, Ainsworth Irish said a group of officers have been trained to ride and operate the motorcycles “but it is going to be somewhat difficult, as the sidecars are mounted on the right side of the motorcycle, while in Dominica we ride on the left side.”

He said it is critical that motorists be on the lookout since there are some 24,000 motor vehicles on the island, with up to 5,000 commuting into Roseau.

He is appealing to motorists who tend to speed through the capital, which is known for its narrow streets.

“The Chief of Police has already instructed his officers to be very careful when riding the motorcycles, but the bus drivers in particular and also people with private vehicles, need to give way to police and other emergency vehicles,” Irish stated.

Inspector Defoe C, who assisted in training the police officers on how to ride the motorcycles safely, said they have been engaged in many practical exercises to ensure the officers are comfortable in maneuvering the motorcycles.

He said, some of their training included the escorting of official vehicles of the State.

“We are hoping that the newly trained police officers will be able to maneuver the motorcycles accident free as possible, because if they are not handled properly can cause damage to the rider and pedestrians,” he said.

The police officers completed training for the use of the motorcycles on Friday, December 20.

These side cars can definitely be a little troublesome and i think that there are better vehicles the police can use that a side car that makes it big and a little unsafe. Glad to see that newly trained police officers will be able to maneuver the motorcycles accident free as possible though.

I personally think that the Chinese should have donated a dew 4 wheel jeeps (I guess its what the Dominicans ordered) This seem dangerous to the lives of our police officers who have no experience using these rides Hope the use a lot of protective gear God Be with them!!

This whole thing is a joke in my view!!! To go from a few vehicles in the force to ninety vehicles plus is one thing. But my goodness!! Did they send ALL ninety plus WITH SIDECARS??? I mean, if that is what they did, someone needs their head examined!!! Whose responsibility was it to lias with the Chinese? We probably could do something with four bikes with side cars, but ninety plus???? I mean, come on!!! These things are hazardous!!!! If a car hits one of those with an officer in the side car, his chances of survival are super slim!! I think that my pardner Mickey, Norman Xavier and others should get contracted to remove those side cars and they should be returned to the Chinese. Motorcycles without side cars are much more practical than those with them connected and are much safer too. This should be reconsidered!!!!

Hello and Merry Christmas to my people. Well its nice that the Officers has the new motorcycles to patrol but why should they put two Officers on one motorcycle to conduct patrols. I say detached the side car and you will have more Officers to cover more locations. Also do we have spare parts in Dominica to repair the motorcycles when they need service. Please used these motorcycles to enforce traffic regulations because we have many reckless drivers. Am looking forward for carnival and we want to be safe on the roads and to enjoy our stay. Again merry Xmas to all.

May I suggest that we create a kind of Outdoor sporting facility to se these motor cycles. Tourist , locals coud rent these for sports and fun . Maybe off road sight seeing etc.
Certainly these things should not be used on the road. This is a death trap.

Why are Dominicans so small minded ,why do you fool yourselves. Instead of being thankful. This country is one of the poorest in the carribean. Doesn’t even have an international airport. And very poor infrastructure, let alone some dumb people. Get a life be thankful. Thanks to Chinese you have a small community stadium , every event in roseau is in stadium.

how can it be reasonable for a system that is unsuitable and unsafe to be implemented and then the police have to caution drivers to be careful.

  17. DAT
    December 24, 2013

Personally i think the side cars are not safe. The orientation is indeed wrong. Two policemen each on his own back can patrol together as a team, as opposed to bikes with sidecars. I am very thankful for the gesture. However, more thought should have gone into it. Patrolling with bikes is a good idea due to the growing crime in this country and it is some what a reasonable approach. This can be a good deterrent for those criminals who up late, like the snatch and grab of peoples’ property. A lady had a her purse grabbed from her hand, one had her cell phone ripped from her hand another had a chain burst from around her neck, all these incidents took place in Roseau. All the thieves took off running after the robbery was committed. If these bikes are used properly and with good training, minus the sidecars they would be an asset. If a criminal realizes that he could be chased up a narrow dirt road with a bike as opposed to a police van or SUV that can’t pass in the area, should he not think twice . So 90 bikes is not to much for a country like Dominica if you take into consideration statistically the number of responses in a given zone in a day. Let them be dispersed properly and you will see it will not have enough. Note, also that policemen have a habit of running personal errands with patrol vehicles. The chief of police needs to enforce regulation where this is concerned, among other things.
Someone made mention of patrolling in Roseau alone, that there are other places requiring patrol. i agree. Take Mahaut district for instance, two offices in the police station is madness. They have to be responsible for the entire Mahaut district including Canefield, Massacre, Les Point, etc. They need more officers for these areas and they will need bikes for those officers, because of the type of narrow roads you have to pass at times to get to a offender.
The bikes minus the side cars good idea.

I don,t see anything wrong about the sidecars, there are many left hand drive vehicles being driven in dominica, its the same just a bit of adjustment, and thats ok,its not wider than a normal car so i don,t see the probs in that ,we dominicans are too critical,we don,t have anything but we still comparation,

  27. Jacky Chan
    December 23, 2013

Boy when I see things like this it reminds me how much we have to learn. Is this a lack of planning or just straight stupidity. How does this thing work in Dominica. Didn’t someone look at these vehicles and say no we certainly don’t need the side carriage let alone 90 of them.
It not because it is a charitable gift that we must accept it.
I would prefer be fired rather than to ride in this carriage in a place like Dominica.

In fact we are in the top 8 in wealth and vince say bu UN standard we are not poor. So may I suggest that in our abundant wealth we should donate a few bikes to the poorer countries of the Caribbean.

Well, since ours is an nation which likes to beg, and receive handouts; and since beggars are not choosers, anything the Chines throw on the ground in our face; like hungry chickens, we grovel and gladly accepts it!

On the other hand since we wish to be the “Nature island of world”( Ian Douglas).

Such seems primitive enough to be welcome by the Labor Party. The Chines however, must be happy to make their presence known, and seen by donating such toys to what should be a modern day Police force.

Nonetheless, if we are the only nation on earth who relished, and have accepted the ” The One China Principal & Policy.” As an loyal, and obedient child to our new masters the Chines, we simply have to put-up, and shut up about anything they give us as gifts.

The Chines are spending billions of dollars all over the world investing in industries, even here in the United States, and troubled places in Africa; yet although our government has chosen to be a poppet of the Chines government, rather than influencing the Chines to invest in the country, we are borrowing from them to do construction work in our country.

The money we borrow for the projects never goes into the nation Treasury; the money is not used to purchase anything from local merchants, since everything used by the Chines contractors is brought to Dominica, (imported from China).

That is a very poor and bad arrangement!

This was something that could have easily been explained before the motorcycles were shipped to Dominica: There was no preliminary review of what was being received. We saw the photos of the motorcycles at the police station and I commented on it and no one took heed.

This is so stupid because these motorcycles are likely to be on our streets for more than 20 years. THE MERE FACT THAT THE WARNING IS BEING GIVEN IS BECAUSE THE “90 motorcycles” POSES SEVERE RISKS FOR ACCIDENTS. It will worth less to return them to have the sidecars placed on the appropriate side: It will worth much less than the potential lost of lives. PLEASE CONSIDER THIS OPTION.

I will say it is a great gesture by the chinese Gov. However in the interest of our traffic rules and safety more attention should be placed on the orientation of these instruments. I believe for an institution the Police force should never use or operated any equipment that will compromise safety and may be a hindrance to the execution of its duties. If embarkment and disembarkment is not done with caution i can see someone getting side swiped. How are you going to proceed when the rules require such procedure away from oncoming traffic. If its orienration is contrary to the side on which we drive then that must be considered and respected especially by the police force. Wish you guys good luck and hope safety is strictly enforced.

Soon them cops will start selling them by parts too. There isno way we need 90 of these on the road. Where are the COPS goung to run these except for a 5 of them in Roseau and two in Portsmouth. Other than that there will be 83 more of these just poowing somewhere.
In my opinion this is a joke. Our society does not demand such extravagance. I don’t even think that the side carriage is necessary particularly regarding the size of our roads.

Why not just motor cycles, which can maneuver around vehicles and be maneuvered around? Why side cars? Nou sot wee!

I know you are not supposed to look a gift horse in the mouth but surely they could have tactfully pointed out to the Chinese that these motorcycles with side-spans mounted on the right side are not suitable for our roads. In fact this is outright dangerous

Lets hope that they will help to stop the bad driving and parking around Roseau. They should also be patrolling around the island, stopping and preventing the mad speeding and over-taking drivers. Good luck to all the new drivers of these vehicles. Keep safe.

U see why Dominicans are not smart citizens Overall

The DPF should have told the Chinese the specs to Build these bikes…coming to speak about sidecars On the right side shows lack of understanding period

But it’s Dominica. they are very backward and timid.
