Magistrate gives Morne Prosper man ‘last chance’

A Roseau magistrate has told a Morne Prosper man that he was being given a last chance and that he should not appear in her court again.

“This is your last chance, don’t come back before me,” 21-year-old Ramon Lucien was cautioned.

Lucien pleaded guilty to the theft of a motor cycle which he said he stole because he “was under rum.”

The incident occurred on September 29, 2012.

Reports are that the owner of the motor cycle, Sheldon Isles, parked his motor cycle under his house and went to bed. Around midnight he recieved a call and noticed the vehicle was missing.

Isles immediately began to search for his missing bike and at about 3 am Lucien was spotted close to Pointe Michel, pushing the stolen cycle. He ran away when Isles approached.  The bike was recovered and a report made to the police.

Lucien was subsequently arrested. “I took the bike….I was under rum and went with it to Melvina’s,” he said in justifying his actions. “It’s not my fault. I was under alcohol.”

However Magistrate Candia Carette George admonished the ‘alcohol influenced’ Lucien telling him that he had been before her recently on a similar charge and was reprimanded. “Being under the influence of alcohol is no defense; you are young, stay away from rum, bum a ride or walk and don’t interfere with people’s property,” she said.

“That’s your last chance … don’t come back before me because the next time I will send to straight to jail,” she warned.

Lucien was fined EC$2,000.00 to be paid by December 31, 2012 in default 4 months in jail.

Many of us keep saying that indulging in alcohol is a bad thing, as far as i can see alcohol do the same damage as drugs, driving or riding while under the influence of alcohol is a bad thing

What if this guy had an accident where he run down some innocent person while under his alcohol spell?, if what he is saying is true, the rum cause him to commit the crime, the authority should have charged him for operating a lethal equipment
