A non-national employed with Emile Gaddarkhan et Fils was released on $15,000 bail today after he appeared at court on a charge of grievous bodily harm.
Juan Calmona, who is from the Dominica Republic, had allegedly beat his co-worker Dennis Vogclina with an iron pipe during an altercation at the company’s quarry in Colihaut on November 24, 2011.
The matter was brought before Chief Magistrate Evelina Baptiste who granted Calmona’s bail under the condition that he surrender his travel documents, report to the Roseau Police Station on Mondays and Fridays and not interfere with the complainant or any witnesses in the matter.
Despite the prosecution’s objection to bail, mainly based on the grounds that Calmona was a flight risk, the defendant, through his lawyer, was able to convince the court otherwise.
Public Relations Officer for Gaddarkhan et Fils Evans John presented the court with a cheque for the amount of bail requested. He told the court that he had been instructed by his boss to write whatever amount the court asked for Calmona’s bail.
The complainant, who was absent from today’s hearing, had been admitted and discharged from the Princess Margaret Hospital. His injuries were unknown as no medical report had been submitted to the court.
The preliminary inquiry is set for March 12, 2012.

Sour-Sour might have to write a new song on that… Domingo… Koul-pipe, Koul-pipe, Koul-pipe, Yea.. I warning you!!
I GOT BAILED IN ANTIGUA WHEN I FOUGHT WITH A GUYANESE AND LOST MY CASE AND SPENT 4 ONTHS IN D REST IN ANTIGUA. IF I HAD NOT GOTTEN BAILED I WOULD HAVE LOST MY JOB AND NOT BE ABLE TO SUPPORT MY KIDS IN DOMINICA. SO GIVING BAIL AINT REALLY A BAD THING…..MAN KILLING MAN AND THEY OUT ON BAIL. WE CANNOT HAVE LAWS FOR DOMINICANS AND ANOTHER SET OF LAW FOR NON DOMINICANS…MAKES NO SENSE.
AS MAN I SUPPORT D CHIEF MAGISTRATE
Only dominica cheque is accept in court for bail. What if this cheque bunce.
is a good thing is not one of my people,D/A national..and so even if he is a flight risk..he is a non-national let d man go in his place..when he fly out just stamp out his passport therefore never to return to Dominica..let them problems/trouble makers(non-nationals) stay in their country and replce his position/job with a Dominican(national..more work 4 my people.
Respect!
Very very true…i agree 100 percent
I agree with your comment but i do hpe that the sentiments go the same way – for Criminal Dominicans in others country!
they would both have to fight or make up on the same plane going back to santo.
