Man convicted for 12 grams of cocaine could face life imprisonment

Azille

Emanuel Azille of Cottage was this afternoon in the High Court found guilty of possession and intent to supply  12 grams of cocaine and is due to face sentencing next Monday.

Justice Birnie Stephenson-Brooks explained that for a class A drug (cocaine), Azille could either face a fine of up to $200,000 or pay three times the street value of the drugs – whichever figure is the greater – and imprisonment for life.

She told the defendant that he had the lengthiest conviction sheet that she had seen in her years on the bench.

She adjourned the matter to next Monday for sentencing in order to research the law with regards to his life sentence.

A jury of two men and seven women found  Azille unanimously guilty of the two offenses after just 20 minutes of deliberation.

Azille proclaimed his innocence throughout the trial and even after he was found guilty. He had been caught by police with the said drugs at an abandoned home in Portsmouth in December 2008.

He chose to have the matter tried at the high court as opposed to a summary trial in the magistrate’s court hence a preliminary inquiry was convened.

“I am 100 percent innocent in that case,” Azille maintained when given a chance to mitigate.

He represented himself in the matter.

More details soon.

Hello fellow Dominicans, let’s all put our heads together to help eradicate crime in our country .you can form groups to help sensitize the public about the effects of Drug Abuse .The DARE PROGRAM SHOULD BE IMPLEMENTED IN ALL SCHOOLS TO FORM PART OF THE CURRICULUM.Many countries in the Caribbean have embarked on this program and it has proven to be very beneficial to the young people at school .This program is taught by police officers in the country where am hailing from.It has grown so significantly that parents are becoming interestingly involved. The education of drug abuse must be imbeded in the young people AND MUST START AT THE EARLIEST POSSIBLE STAGE.Let us stop blame so and so and lets help each other.Police Officers must always be seen as part of the community and not an enemy of the people .I lOVE ALL MY DOMINICAN PEOPLE.My prayers are with you.

It is clear that Mannie is not a drug dealer but a user.Having 12 grams of drugs is surely not enough evidence to subtantiate the charge of having in possesion with intent to supply. Most people know that Mannie is a mental case that rehabilitation should be recommended. Many of our young people on the street who are plagued by these drugs should be looked after by the GOV’T.By this I mean that all of them should be collected of the road ,placed in a home and given the neccessary treatment and counseling. My God they are part of us ,they are human beings and they too have rights to be protected and to be treated humanely. They are our brothers and sisters. Please don’t let them continue to suffer.I am certain that the politicians caught them and took them to the polls to vote because their vote was important to win their seat; Therefore it means ,their votes worth a cost and that price should be paid back in rehabilitation.Do something Prime Minister SKERRITT.

The greatest judge is the Most High (God) All Powerful, He is more powerful on the Cocain. Mannie, my advice to you is …If you know you have been comitting this crime, Repent. Make it right with your God, and seek him for it is He alone who will plead your cause for you. While this is a harsh one on you, just accept the fact that you have to suffer the consequences of you actions. Remember that there is no mountain that God cannot move. no sickness He cannot cure. and no sin He cannot forgive.

“Jesus Christ ” is the greatest example of all this. Mark you he was not a drug offender criminal. He did good for all kind of people, and what did they do when pilate asked what must they do to him? they cried out? “CRUCIFY HIM”, ” CRUCIFY HIM”. So during your reign, when you were the real Mannie; you shared the cocain or drug money in cash or kind I should say…Many enjoyed the fruits of your track record, you as well as they would know and recall…those were the days. Today what are they saying? “JAIL HIM” How many of them are standing up for you? I pray that God put a hand and turn things around for you if you truly repent.

Well he was advised to elect to have his trial at the High Court by his lawyer to avoid being sentenced by Magistrate Behanzin, The facts suggest that he should have pleaded guilty at the Magistrates’ Court and mitigate before the court! He was warned by the magistrate when the election was put to him! that ‘brilli…………ant laywer’ is now sitting in his new office smiling, while this fool is heading for a seriously stiff sentence!-

12 yeqrs for 12 grams would be outrageous; but lifetime!!! 12 grams are less than half an ounce. Are we governed by sharia (Islamic) law? That’s why there are so many heinous crimes associated with drug dealing. They murder potential snitches instead of being put away for life. Not even the death penalty will stop drug dealing. Legalization (of some), education, rehabilitation, alternative sources of income and recreation are more effective in lessening dependence on drugs.

Then what kind of drug dealer is he? where is the money? who has it? Mr. is not the manie I know…the judge is wasting her time on an ill person. I call that taking advantage of a helpless man. you want to make an example of someone, go get the business owners openning businesses like wild fire.

I agree with that. If he was he would have money to get the best lawers to represent him. Besides he is infact a mental case and everyone seem to think is drugs. We are all criminals in one way or the order…ask the the law makers. where is the 12grams? They already make millions on it and the man have to go lifetime. Investigate them

When people are convicted for crimes related to ganja you people make noise and say that it should be lagalized and that the police should go after those that are dealing the coke. Now her is one of the coke dealers/suppliers caught and being sentenced and its a problem because its the murderers that police should be going after. I am sick and tired of the constant complaining in this forum.
