Man found guilty of wounding

courtA nine-member jury has found a Roseau man guilty of wounding with intent Brian Peter Dominique in July 2011 at Virgin Lane Roseau.

The court heard that Clever Burton attacked Dominique with a knife at the back of his neck.

The state’s case was presented by state attorney attached to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Fernilia Felix, while Burton was represented by Peter Alleyne.

Dominique told the court that on the day in question, he went to Virgin Lane to have lunch and saw Burton in the yard. As he was about to sit, Burton came toward him with a knife and stabbed him at the back of his neck. Burton also repeatedly stamped on Dominique’s thigh for about five minutes.

“I felt cold after the stabbing, my body was seized, I can’t recall anything after that,” Dominique said in court. “When I woke up, I was in theater at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH).

He spent about four weeks at the medical institution.

Under cross examination Dominique said he and Burton were friends before the incident and “never had any difficulties.”

As a result of the stab wounds, Dominique, who was once employed at First Domestic Insurance can no longer work.

He is now working with the aid of a cane or walking stick and his mobility has been severely hampered.

Dr. Hendricks Paul, who performed surgery on Dominique and had to remove the knife which was stuck in his neck, was not able to attend court to testify because he was ill.

However, his deposition and medical findings were read to the court and formed part of the evidence.

The deposit, which was read by a clerk of the magistrate’s court, stated that Dr. Paul had examined Brian Dominique on July 8, 2011.

He also had to remove what he described as “a foreign object” in the fourth intercostals space high up in the back which was two centimeters from the mid line posterior.

The object, he said, was “long and flat” and was removed in theatre and it was a knife.

Paul stated that no treatment or therapy would improve Dominique’s condition because the nerves were cut and Dominique now uses a stick to walk and would never get back to his full self again.

At present, Burton is on remand at the state prison awaiting sentencing which is schedule for March 6, 2015 before Justice Errol Thomas.

First of all why did he stab his (former) friend? I hope he gets many years life imprisonment. This man should be sent for a psychiatric assessment. Is he mad or what for stabbing his friend?
The poor man, victim. He is fortunate that he is still alive. He has lost nearly all his faculties. He had a job and is now unable to work and is unable to function as he previously did.
I do think the government should assist him for this occurred in public and with no aggravation I suppose.

I personally would not have sent him to jail, WHY? in honesty, he should be held responsible for the well being of the victim!
If I was giving permission to judge him? here goes my judgement/penalty…put him out in the hot sun to clean the streets, drains and cut the grass along the side walk all over the Island, then his paycheck would forever be transferred directly into the victims account.
To this criminal going to jail is like getting a golden ticket to heaven, in the mind of this criminal during the trial he is screaming LIFE TIME PLEASEEE….why? he must be saying “FREEDOM AT LAST ME NA GONNA WORK NO MORE”… daily showers, (3) three square meals, bed to sleep on, no bills to pay life it’s a dream….! smoke my weed and say THANK YOU JAH…( TAX PAYERS MONEY) putting lipstick on a pig with hi heel shoes, and a large umbrella to shelter from rain and sun that is justice? NO…

PREMEDITATED ACT, intent to kill. A KNIFE is not a wallet, BUT, a weapon…what a great…

well i can only hope that part of his punishment is to take care of dominique financially for the rest of his life seeing that dominique would never get back to his full self again. maybe that will make us human beings think twice befor we choose to become mischievous and heartless.
