Man injured by rum bottle after having drinks with friends

A Pointe Michel man who used a rum bottle to injure one of his drinking buddies faces three months in prison if he does not pay a court-ordered fine of $600 by June 22, 2010.

Jason Casimir pleaded guilty to wounding Erickson Charles at the Roseau Magistrate’s Court this week. Through his lawyer, Peter Alleyne, he told the court that Charles had become aggressive after he was told there was no more alcohol.

According to the defense counsel, on the said date, the defendant summoned a few friends to help with the construction of his home. He bought a bottle of alcohol, so they could “drink and be merry while they work.”

Meanwhile, the police prosecutor told the court that the defendant attacked the complainant after a verbal exchange.

“At a certain time, the complainant made a joke with the defendant and the defendant said [don’t touch me]. The complainant touched him. The defendant took the bottle broke it and began stabbing the defendant with the bottle…”

“He sent a bottle.  It hit me in my back…I was under the influence of alki, I was not sober,” the complainant said.

The complainant then went to the Princess Margaret Hospital where he was treated and discharged.

The defendant was subsequently charged for the offence. During a subsequent interview with the police officers, Casimir denied the stabbing.

According to the court, a medical report stated that the complainant’s wounds were not life threatening.

The complainant told Magistrate Tiyani Behanzin that he had received a cut on his lower back where the rum bottle struck him. He received four stitches.

Meanwhile, Casimir’s lawyer said the complainant was not stabbed all over. He reiterated that a bottle was sent after the complainant which struck him and caused the injuries.

Before passing sentence Magistrate Behanzin told the defendant, “I can understand the alcohol thing because you two are friends. But the breaking of the bottle as a weapon, I have a serious problem with that…”
