Man punished for beating sister over text message

A Concord man who punched and squeezed his sister’s throat after she sent him a text message of which he disapproved,  has been sentenced to pay EC$1,500 by April 30, or spend three months in jail.

Henderson Gordon appeared before Magistrate Candia George on Friday morning where he pleaded guilty to a charge of battery.

The court heard from a police prosecutor that when confronted Gordon told police, “Officer I go to punch her in her mouth but I took her in her head.”

According to the prosecutor, Gordon’s sister had sent a text which allegedly made unsavory remarks about his mother and father.

Upon reading the message, the defendant went to his sister’s workplace and began assaulting her.

According to the police she had to be rescued by co-workers.

Before passing sentence, Magistrate George advised the defendant to seek anger management counseling.

She also encouraged him to try to resolve the issue with his sister and not to repeat his actions in the future.

Boy look how far we have come from the days of Green Gold when we used to meet next day at the end of each episode to discuss what Goberre was doing in the cemetary. For those of you too young to remember Green Gold was a radio Drama Series much like young and Restless, that was performed by People”s action Theatre in the late 70s early 80s when we had curfew and political unrest and Dominicans had to be home at a certain hour. We had no TVs so we all tuned in to Green Gold and it was exciting. Today we expressing our views in a sophisticated forum like DNO. And some of us still missing the point, Instead of sharing well reserched and informed views we go off on tangents attacking others and displaying an astronomical level of ignorance.Zor sorti wivay avec sorttay

      @ baby

You must be a baby who obviously has not yet matured to childhood much more to adulthood.
Never encourage or condone violence. As an adult and if you are a practicing Christian of all, surely you should know better than that. For an adult, not even babies would think as you do.

@ kamptcankta aaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwww….you are so brilliant and insightful!!!!!!!
to compare a brutal beating of a woman by her brother ……to a mother getting knocked in the head with a rock by a daughter who probably did it to defend herself….the police did not charge the daughter….so what do you think….do you know who started the fight? whether it was the mother or daughter?………… not only that but it’s two women fighting each other as opposed to a man taking advantage of a woman….that poor girl didn’t stand a chance against him……again you are much too smart and insightful for me  Jesus loves you too my love…..i am so happy that you had a good life….we all deserve it

      @ tiny

The mother probably asked that her daughter not be charged. If there were any charges, she could have withdrawn the charges. She could have done this for peace sake. I hope that the daughter learned a lesson, to be respectful to her mother and to curb her temper.

Ok people you know the deal already this is my thing………………………skerrit…….I am pleading to you……..our laws must be revised …..a man viciously attacks his sister in the most horrendous way possible and he gets fined…….this man should have been sentenced to a minimum of a year in prison………..so you mean in Dominica as long as you have money to give to the government you can assault whomever you want?……..this country is beyound primitive……..

No woman desreves to be beaten .. but to travel all the way to her workplace implies that te text related to thier parents must really be out of place.. men take these insults agaist their parents seriously… gotts be careful just saying.. but my friend you really need anger management .. cant go about beating ppl for their chats especailly woman

    • Justice and Truth
      February 3, 2012

      @ Excuse

Some people could find themselves in situations they never expected. He had no reason to go to her workplace and injure her. He could have killed her. Never attack anyone for it is primarily a crime.
You know that there are two sides to a story. Something must have happened or said between both of them.
Are you aware that the pen is mightier than the sword? I shall say in this day of computer keyboards, “mightier are the fingers” on the keyboard. He could have replied by Text but hopefully not in a derogatory manner.
I am one who will do my utmost to live at peace with others but there are some people who are cantankerous and cannot live at peace with others. They will always find something critical to state, be it through envy.
I have a way of handling such a situation if per chance anyone hurts my feelings (we know and or will meet such people). We may not respond immediately. I may just ignore such people and cease communication with them. This would be a better route to avoid a confrontation or quarrel, be it over the telephone.
I may also write a letter and without insulting them but directly addressing the issue and making my point clear. I write in such a manner, outlining their words and attitude and informing them how I feel, that they will feel bad about it. Yes! In most cases they will apologize. Whether they mean it or not I will never know but God knows.
What she stated caused him to be angry. It created a rift and enmity between them and his parents. It could also cause injury and death. Certain words could hurt and sting. As the saying, “Be careful of stones that you throw”. In addition, two wrongs do not make a right.
Some people are in dire need of the grace of God to be godly in words and deeds and to live happily and peacefully with others. Sadly, the world is filled with many such people. My conclusion is also that they will never live a happy and peaceful life for what they generate to others they will also reap it and two-fold.
We must learn to utilize psychology.
I hope this man will benefit from the anger management course. He is in dire need of it. May God assist him.

@ reader….he gets away with it because it is acceptable behavior in Dominica….I’m sure he punches his daughter or will punch his daughter when he has one….beating with a belt is no different…….those kind of beating Dominican parents give their kids is abuse ….but like i said before only kids are allowed to be abused

How does paying a fine amount to just punishment for this kind of assault? This wasn’t even a simple case of someone losing temporary control over his emotions–HE TRAVELED TO HER WORKPLACE and then assaulted her in front of everyone else. Someone like that has serious problems, maybe even still believes that he did nothing wrong, that he was entitled to hit his sister. No mere words give you the right to physically attack someone else.

      February 3, 2012

“….maybe even still believes that he did nothing wrong, that he was entitled to hit his sister”.

You right about that boss.He figured it was an accident when he stated, “Officer, I go to punch her in the mouth but I took her in the head”. Like it wasn’t his fault he took her head. He did not even realize that the mouth is part of the head and he could have knocked off her teeth.

Anyway, one year for touching a butt, but $1500 for a savage beating. Go figure!! Oh, maybe first time offender!!

Lucky for him that this sister of his is not my wife or girlfriend. He or someone acting on his behalf would be online now shopping for an artificial right arm. Some men are just to damn wicked and inconsiderate. Anger management? Yeah right, I sure would have delivered some anger management on him.

What an outrage? I hope Alix Boyd-Knight and the other “concerned” Dominica women take to the airwaves on this one. A MAN puch up his sister until she had to be rescued by co-workers and he gets charged ONLY $1500 (with 3 whole months to pay it). Are there no sentencting guidelines? Are sentences imposed based on how our magistrates feel this morning or it their spirit take you or not? This animal puch up a woman like she is punching bag and a woman magistrate gave him a slap on the wrist? What an outrage! Shame on you Candia! Shame on that turd that beat up a woman!!

    • Tiger Eye
      February 3, 2012

So the “woman” magistrate should have imposed a stiffer sentence? In your world there are different laws for men and women.

She should have sent him to prison for assault, but not because the assault was by a man against a woman. Crime is crime.

and is the same thing i was talking about………..boys have a better time at it than females……..mothers beat their daughters more….fathers are more strict with their daughters…….so a male and a female child raised in the same home could have total different experience….almost like they were raised in separate homes
