Masked men in military clothing stage violent robbery in Canefield

A Haitian national is in hospital and a senior citizen recuperating after a violent robbery at a barbeque parlour in Canefield early Sunday morning.

Robbers ran away with a cash-draw containing money, business cards, and personal items, as well as a bag containing cell phones and cash.

Rhonda Coipel, owner of the business ‘Rhona’s BBQ’ said today her Haitian employee was held with a knife to her neck and was also hit in the head.

The robbers dressed in military uniform entered the business place just when a family gathering was wrapping up, Coipel said.

“As soon as they stepped out of the gate, I saw some military kind of army uniform. I saw the guys coming in through the gate and they were putting their gloves in their hands. All their faces were masked,” she recounted.

Coipel said her mother was tormented, while thieves tried to steal money from the bar. “I heard my mom screaming and he (one of the robbers) started pushing my mom,” she noted. “I said. ‘my mom have a stroke and if you give her a heart attack it will not be worth it. Just take what you come for and leave.'”

Another man sitting on a bench was also attacked. “He just throw him down and start to kick him and there was one with a long pump and he started ‘chooking’ him (the customer) with it and dragging him,” Coipel further recounted.

Coipel described the incident as a heavy burden for her family as they are presently dealing with the death of a relative.

Just couple a couple of digestion:
Increase manpower in Portsmouth and more uniformed patrols.
It’s also time to consider setting up two units to patrol the entire island. One in the north and one in the south.Target the areas of concern.

This is upsetting. My advice to business men and women arm yourselves, by having a license pistol, some pepper spray, some alkali, some security guards and be prepared. It is time that these bastards get a taste of their own medicine. Every one must work hard for a dollar and they feel content to just come and reap where they have not sown. I am mad with these guys. It must be stopped, and I believe it will stop when someone make a marked example of one of them. Please business people do it speedily, send them to the hospital, where their identify must be revealed. Do not blame the police officials!!

I agree with you totally. I live in the US but there is no way as a business owner in Dominica that I would not have at least two license pistols at my business place. I would take pleasure coupled with fear to fire it at one of these bastards. Business owners please arm yourself. Do not wait until one of your employees get killed or badly hurt!

I agree with all that you say….except this little food for thought….what about all the EMPLOYEES OF THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT and other GOVERNMENT WORKERS….who work hard…honestly….everyday yet they go for months at a time…sometimes longer….without getting paid their wages….we need to consider all these things….it is not just common criminals responsible for this sudden crime wave in our beautiful land…..there are many decent law abiding people who are desperate….and when people are desperate they can and sometimes do things completely out of character….just saying….

IT IS VERY UNFORTUNATE THAT,IN ORDER TO HAVE A RELAXED MEAL IN A RESTAURANT,YOU MUST BE ARMED LIKE YOU ARE ON THE STREETS OF BAGDAD OR LIKE TEXAS IN THE OLD COWBOY DAYS.THERE ARE CRIMES EVERY WHERE IN THE WORLD,BUT SHOULD A SMALL COUNTRY LIKE DOMINICA HAVE TO BE SUBJECTED TO THAT KIND OF VOILENCE.DR.SEVARIN SPOKE OF THE VIOLENCE AND BEFORE WE THANK THE MAN FOR THE HEADS UP,WE WERE GIVEN THE STORY OF HIS LIFE AS REGARDS HOW MANY TIMES BE BEGGED FOR FAVOURS,TODAY HE HAS GONE INTO HIS SHELL.INSTEAD OF HAVING THE POLICE ROAMING THE STREETS OF ROSEAU, A TOP RANK OFFICIAL HAS MORE SECURITY THEN PRESIDENT OBAMA. RECENTLY, GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS PUBLICLY REQUESTED MORE SECURITY,THERFORE,THE POLICE IS STRETCHED AND TIRED, SO HOW DO YOU EXPECT THEM TO RESPOND QUICKLY TO ROBBERIES ETC.RHONA I FEEL YOUR PAIN,I WILL NOT STOP EATING YOUR DELICIOUS BBQ.

Alot of people on here seem to misunderstand the role of the police. The police is not omnipresent, cannot be. And they are not employees of any private business. What is the probability that when a robber strikes a business place, in the few seconds it takes them, that the police happens to be out patroling, or visiting that establishment? Every body who owns a business should invest in some security measures, and should implement cash management measures to minimize loss at any one time. I have mentioned before, cash should be removed from the till when it reaches a set amount.
We are finding out that our robbers are lightyears ahead. They monitor us, the calculate, they plan, they execute and they get away because we as business owners dont see the need to upgrade our defense mechanisms. This is our new reality. We have to face it.

    • Jayson
      December 14, 2011

I don’t think the public are expecting the police to be waiting outside of every establishment as it is robbed to catch the criminals.

All the public are looking for is a VISIBLE UNIFORMED POLICE PRESENCE on patrol in the comunity. We want them there to act as a deterant.

Better management of police resources and personnel is deffinitely required! Get them out of the bush and onto the streets in their black and blue uniform!

I am seeing a disturbing trend of thought by several anti-labour persons commenting on DNO. They are promoting the idea that all crime that occurs now is excusable because they believe that the labour party is corrupt.

My friends, there is no excuse for violence and there is no excuse for crime. No one can convince me that if Labour is corrupt then everyone has to be corrupt also because we must all blindly follow our leaders like mice behind the pied piper.

If you are against crime and corruption then you must be against all crime and corruption.

I denounce this selfish act of stealing. Most of us are working hard to make a living. I see no excuse for a criminal who feels entitled to just take somebody’s hard-earned possessions. Personally, I’m not pretending to be no purveyor of justice – I want a law that says that people can defend their property against thugs like these.

I bet you my life-savings that the robbers are people who have frequented that bar, calculated how well that business was doing, scoped out the premises and made their plans.

The government called for the turning in of illegal and unregister guns, but it think now that people are going to need personal protection more than ever, even those not previously interested in guns, because it stands that the criminals aren’t being caught.
I understand the difficulty that the police have in solving these cases, but that gives no solace to the victims of violence.
I know Rhoda and her mom. I can’t tell you of two people who deserve this less. And as for her employee, she’s really devoted and soft spoken. This is so ridiculous.

The people of Dominica will continue until the people start having reverence of Allah in their lives.

To Rhonda and family, my heart goes out to you all. I pray you all receive a speedy recovery from this ordeal. I just spoke to you on Saturday at length.

Dominicans, more of you need to come to Islam, let’s apprehend these thieves and apply Islamic law on them. This will put fear in the hearts of criminals so that once more people can leave their doors like in Muslim countries. If you really want that safety, come to Islam. Allah will love you and forgive your sins.

        December 14, 2011

What goes on in the M.E has absolutely nothing to do with Islam. Our noble scholars have condemned the attacks. Most of where this happens are in countries invaded by Westerners.

Secondly, we are not trying to impose Islam on anyone, Allah says in the Holy Quran 2:256 “There is no compulsion in religion, truth is clear from error.”

Lastly, Muslims do not run to the west to escape Islam, they are running away from Pan Arabism, Monarchs and dictators which were installed by the west to stifle Islam. We must remember America and Israel fund billions of dollars to keep the regime in power. Let’s take Egypt for example, Mubarak was funded, given an army etc to subdue the Muslims. Please get your facts before commenting. Don’t be brainwashed by western media. Thanks.

I’m very sorry sir, I tried to ignore your first and last paragraph as everyone is entitled to their opinions, but how can you seriously speak about peace and putting fear in people and then mention the “reverence of Allah”?
I would like you to study the history of war and violence in the world. Everytime you increase the retaliation to violence with violence, the level or type of violence increases.
What happened to Rhoda and family was really bad, but they are alive. Can you imagine if the robbers had to think of being caught and getting “Islamic Law” punishment? They might have just killed everyone to have no witnesses. And that’s the kind of things we see and hear happening in Muslim states isn’t it?
No thank you sir, I vote for a respectful and temperamental Lord. My God have respect for life; all life.

      • Abu Sulayman
        December 14, 2011

You are so wrong my friend. Placing fear in the hearts of criminals is healthy to checkmate them. It is a preventative method. Allah is love as well as He is just and swift in punishment.

Secondly, you are not keeping in the will of Allah to let criminals walk free. This is no justice. Look at the repeats of these robbers; if there were stronger punishments against them they would think twice before doing this. Now, the entire society pays for it. Our tax money is going down the drain. Is this justice?

does going to Islam change anything, I live in the uk where there is islam all over the place and go to the court houses and you will see who goes there more, islam does not change anything . You talk about leaving doors, you should see who has the most security around their property.

      • Abu Sulayman
        December 14, 2011

It changes a lot, take a trip to Saudi Arabia. The UK does not have Islamic laws to protect its citizen so do not confuse a few Muslims. Yes Muslims are in court houses now than ever before because of the discrimination against them similarly to what happened to people of African descent.

It is sad to hear what is becoming of Dominica. These thugs are creating a bad name for the country. The fact remains that the crime is committed and they are free to roam the streets looking for another prey. I think the police commissioner should really take this matter seriously. Are you all surprised? Whenever the environment in any country is conducive to wrong doings – stealing, cheating, lying, and other illegalities, and those corrupt acts are condoned, or excuses are made, then expect more and more and more criminal acts, armed robberies, defrauding the Treasury, forgery, embezzlement, kick-backs, money-laundering, no transparency or accountability regarding the sales of our passports. Wasn’t Dr. Severin and others ridiculed for simply expressing their candid views about the increase in crimes and criminal activities and that we must be more pro-active in dealing with such dangerous trends?

So tell me if those crimes will decrease, when from the top excuses are made, some are well protected and defended when caught red-handed in their involvment in controversial or criminal acts.

Cultural Diversity is one of the major problem facing any kind of Country that is in thhe process of development. It is clear that Dominica is facing a challenge which they never experience before, and so the Government and law enforcement must initiate laws to dealing with these types of crime before it gets out of control. What I mean’t by out of control is the fact, there are three major elements to a crime (1) Motive(2) Opportunities, and (3)Desire. Motive, they are influence to carrying on with their action, because they know the consequency for their action has little, or no effect on their life. Opportinuities, they know that the business in Dominica have little or know security, and not enough police officers patrolling either foot patrol, or MVP. Desire, Drugs use, lack of education and employment are also major factors of such behavior. There are serious steps that must be implemented immediately to terminate, or prevent such behaivor.

    A. Police officer cannot under no circumstances patrol with their hands hangining down on their side, they must be will preapered to take on the challengies ahead of this Country.

    B. Government must encourage Busniesses to make every effort to protect their businesses and provide a safe working environment for their staff.

    C. To safe guard and encourage these busniesses Government must pass laws to discourage these types of behavior. These laws should outline with harsh punishment, to the person,(s) who breaks the law.

    D. The police department should implement a new police community outreach, such as Auxiliary police department to encourage both young and adult to participate in creating a safe environment for the community. The police cannot be every where, and they cannot do it alone.

    E. Businesses should be proactive say somthing if you see something, the police department should offer some kind of training, or method to protect their property, staff and their personnel.

    F. The death penalty should be reviewed again.

I feel so sad to hear this. I feel for Rhona, her staff and her mother who suffered a stroke some years ago.

I am so fed up with these criminals picking on people who work hard to earn a legitimate living.

The Police have proven that they are incapable or don’t care too much in solving these robberies. The time will come when the ordinary citizens will have to take their protection and defence into their own hands.

I feel so strongly about this that I would advocate vigilante justice for those vagabonds who have traumatized Rhona and her family.

YOUR COMMENT IS PATHETIC NOT THE POLICE. LAY THE BUCK WHERE IT SHOULD BE OK ON THE PEOPLE WHO CHOSE THIS WAY OF LIFE NOT THE POLICE WHO ARE DOING ALL THAT THEY CAN WITH THE LIMITED RESOURCES THAT THEY HAVE TO COMBACT CRIME. BETTER YET WHY DONT YOU GET THE FBI OR CIA TO TRAIN YOUT POLICE FORCE SO THAT THEY CAN DO EXACTLY AS YOU SEE POLICE DO ON TELEVISION ON NCIS AND OTHER PROGRAMMES. ONE MORE SUGGESTION WHY DONT YOU ASK THE POWERS RTHAT BE TO INVEST HEAVILY IN SPECIALIZE TYRAINING FOR YOUR POLCIE TO EQUIP THEM WITH THE SKILLS NEEDED TO SOLVE THESE CRIMES EH WOW. The main duty of an officer is to protect the people. When there are recurring acts of crimes like these we will get angry and frustrated because we do not feel safe.

We want the police officers to do their JOBS. What we don’t need are traffic directors or security guards calling themselves officers of the law, because that’s what these officers seems to be, glorified security guards. We want competent police officers.

This sure is “taunting the police” they have to make a brake in this string of robberies. These are the same gang doing these robberies, it got to be.People should take note of persons who come to their business places and act like they come to do business, but seems to be checking them out, in other words, Trust no One.most likely the victims maybe know the thieves, but the thieves doe want them to see their faces.Dominica have lost it’s innocence.

WE AL HAVE TO COOPERATE WITH THE CIVIL SOCIETY AND THE GOVERNMENT TO PUT AN END TO THESE CRIMES.

I have been looked at as being controversial and my comments have triggered a lot of speculations on dno.

We as a society have to be sober and recognise that national security issues are a moral imperative and none of us is immune from crime’s deadly sting.

We also have to take a look at the laws as theyre and give the law enfrcement officers better resources and training.

As a private citizen am prepared to assist but I shall not be part of any movement that is looking at crime as an opportunity to score political points. Too often there are persons who are happy with the rise in crime to say things about the government. I believe that such an approach is wrong. I also belive that this government needs to do much more to fight crime but using Q95 as a platform to do so is not the way forward. We have to de-politicise crime !

Father in the name of your son Jesus, give us a new spirit this season. May we focus on you more and what we can get less. May we realize that each of us has a part to play in our society. Bring our leaders to their knees father, break down every idol, cast down every foe, Father wash us and let us be whiter than snow. Father may a spirit of repentance flow through this land, bring down to the ground all those who use whatever means necessary to get or remain in power. Send a revival upon govermnet and opposition, prisoner and prison guard, church member and church leader, principal and student, criminal and police officer, Father may we be parents- real parents teachign right and wrong, teaching hard work and honest pay, teaching and instilling values that will last a lifetime. Oh Jehovah I lift up my country into your hands, have your own way Father, may we seek to praise you and none else, may we recognize the ultimate sacrificial lamb that was slain so that we may have peace, eternal rest and peace in you, may we like children have faith that can move mountains. Father have your divine way in my life and in my country. We ask all this in Jesus name, Amen.

In the name of Jesus is part of the problem. Get rid of it, come to pure monotheism then we will make some headway. You cannot rid Dominica of evil by committing a worse crime of paganism. Calling on others besides Allah in worship is clear and manifest error. How can you call on Jehovah and Jesus? How many gods do you want to worship? Isn’t one Lord better than two?

We have to set an example. We are not holding our leaders accountable. We rather have roads and cars and money. We need to stop and think and ask questions and seek the Lord. We are a country of double standards- we expect our children to be honest while we rob those who pay us, rob those who are beneath us. We are a country in need of repentance and we have to find a head that is God fearing. But to chose a God fearing head we have to be a God fearing people. It has to start with us.

    • Flummoxed
      December 13, 2011

This is the most flummoxing comment on this issue!!!

There is NO WAY any police department can PREVENT crime. There are many forces in the world, constantly trying to disrupt the balance of our social environment.

There are laws which govern the duties of police officers. They can arrest criminals after the crime is committed.

Ther are some “bad” priests but we still go to church. Likewise, ther are some “bad” cops, but we still need to support our police ’cause they are the ones we call on whenever a crime is committed against us.
