Murder cases dominated the High Court as the 2016 Criminal Session got underway on January 12 with Justice Errol Thomas presiding.

Of the nine murders cases on the list, eight of them were traversed from the last Session held in 2015. Mitchel Toussant, who is charged with the November 26, 2011 murder of Alexis Toussaint of Bense, is the only new matter on the list.

The others are Herbert Xavier, Lauretta Xavier and Manuella Williams from Soufriere who are expected to be retried for the 2010 murder of their brother, Harrison Williams.

Shane Degallerie is also expected to be retried for the 2010 murder of Justin Joseph. The others to be tried for murder are Vivian Charles, Clarence Lewis and Bernie Samuel, Asha James, Reginald Mann, Mackenly Williams and Daniel Elton Bannis.

On the list are also a number of sexual matters committed on minors.

There are a few matters of theft and burglary and also unlawful wounding and grievous bodily harm with intent.

Michelle Jno Charles is facing a charge of grievous bodily harm with intent and unlawful wounding in Salisbury in November 2010. She has pleaded not guilty to the charges and the matter is set for a date later in the Session.

In the matter dealing with convicted rapist, Stephen Trevor James, AKA Kurt James or “Shabba” who was killed in Antigua by police, DPP Baptiste informed the court that she has written to the relevant authorities seeking official confirmation of his death and when that is so confirmed she will take a certain course of action.

Layne Orlando Royer who is charged with causing death by reckless driving had his matter set for January 21, 2016.

Many murder cases and attempted murders. Too many people in our little Dominica are murdered. As the years progress it may get worst.
Can anything be done to decrease murders? I would think, education and counseling may help.
Last but not least, godliness is absolutely necessary. Its practice should enable people to discuss and argue without being disagreeable, curb their temper, be on good terms with fellow people and strive for peace. This could avoid arguments, animosity, enmity, injury and murder. Try it you will like it!

Life is precious. The late Holy Father, Saint Pope John Paul II said: “Love life. Defend it. Preserve it.
