Mwanga’s reputation will not overshadow investigation – police

Omara Small, formerly named Mwanga Freeman

Irrespective of the kind of person Omara Small, formerly known as ‘Mwanga Freeman’, is perceived to be, police spokesman Inspector Claude Weekes said “we are expected to execute our functions properly and professionally”.

Weekes said police have still not made any arrests nor is anyone assisting with the investigation. He did not speak of the progress of the investigation, but said it is ongoing.

‘Mwanga’ was killed execution style on Wednesday night at about 9:30 on High Street, Roseau outside a small shop. The 32-year-old was shot at least five times in the head and chest.

According to information gathered on the scene on Wednesday, the man was having a chat with friends and family outside of the establishment at the time of his demise. The fatal shots, police suspect, were fired from behind a concrete fence.

Small has had several run-ins with the law. The most famous is his murder conviction.

He along with another man were sentenced to be hanged for the October 28, 1998 murder of Ossie Osmond Charles.

The death sentence was successfully appealed and lifted in May of 2001. In 2005 Freeman was released from prison while his accomplice, Leroy Lamgford, received 10 years.

Freeman legally changed his name shortly after to Omara Smalls.
