Newtown man arrested and charged for spate of burglaries in Roseau

The police have arrested and charged Newtown resident Mitchel “Fabou” Bernard Phillip for a number of burglaries in the capital city of Roseau from July 22 to August 15, 2017.

Phillip appeared before a Roseau Magistrate on August 24, 2017 where the charges were read to him.

He was not required to plea since all the matters are indictable.

He was charged with burglarizing Kent Anthony’s Guest House between July 22-24, 2017. He allegedly stole tee shirts, pants, a battery charger and a few other items all totaling EC$920.00.

He was also charged with burglarizing the business place of Nicks Trading on August 9, 2017, stealing a number of items totaling EC$325.00.

Police also charged Phillip with the burglary of Kendell Mini Mart on 8 Hanover Street, Roseau on August 14, 2017. The items which were allegedly stolen include a laptop, whiskey and others, all totaling EC$2,534.50.

The other charge relates to the burglary of Josh Boutique on August 15, 2017, where it is alleged that he stole a laptop, perfumes, clothing items and others, totaling EC$26,082.80

The prosecution objected to bail saying that “more charges are expected to come against him” and if bail is granted, Phillip, being a ‘repeat offender,” will commit more crimes.

Phillip has a long history of convictions including theft in 2011, handling stolen goods in 2011 and theft in 2017.

The Magistrate labeled him “a menace to himself and society” saying that the allegations against him of breaking into buildings in Roseau were not good for him.

“Give me a good reason why I should grant you bail,” the Magistrate stated.

Phillip responded by saying that he cannot do anything else since “my mind and my body won’t allow me.”

Bail was denied and the matter is set for trial on November 27, 2017.He is unrepresented.

The accused is unrepresented.

By his own admission this man is a pathological recidivist and releasing him back into society would be irresponsible. To those who disagree I would say, you take care of him and keep him under constant watch . If you can not do that keep him confined for his own good as well as others.

How about the break and enter at the store where the gate was broken in Roseau? Is the name of the store Starrin and Sons?
This man is a chronic thief. You can also call him a kleptomaniac and all such names for a thief. He cannot keep his mind and body from stealing. These days the word “thief” is not used. I suppose it is too common a word. They are called criminals.
His response to the magistrate was: “My mind and my body won’t allow me.” Well, he expended all his mind and body to figure out where next he will be robbing. It must have been tiring for him  going around, breaking and entering and stealing. Even trying to hide the items was exerting enough for his mind, probably fearing that he will be caught.
His mind and body will get a good rest in prison. He will not have to exert all his energy and lose sleep to also figure out where next he will go to break and enter and steal the property of others.
He should be imprisoned for life.

I Know!!!! was thinking the same thing. I am not supporting the man wrong doing but some Boutiques round Roseau just the same. Places like Josh Boutique buying clothing so cheap and selling them toooo d*mn expensive. People have a choice to buy it but still they just like the man. In fact $26,000. They to should be arrested and charged. AMEN

I am also not supporting this business owner. He is operating a business. He must make a profit substantially enough.
Do not be hard on him. Business owners are in it for the profit and rightfully so. How else could they survive, progress and be successful? They also have overhead costs. The various ones are many. Those who employ staff must pay them, hopefully a decent salary.
For instance, when stores in Canada or the U.S. advertise they have a sale for half-price or less. they do not lose. Their prices are inflated which the customers do not know about. The selling price has to be a certain percentage over their purchase price. Customers think they got a bargain. We all fall for that sales gimmick. Some people deliberately wait when a sale is on. Therefore, when they have a sale, they do not lose a dime or a dollar.
