Nicholas Roberts in court, again

Nicholas Roberts

Repeat offender Nicholas Roberts of Stockfarm/Pottersville has once again appeared in court on another set of charges.

The 35-year-old is now facing a charge of battery and two other charges.

Roberts is accused of beating a woman in Roseau on August 6 and has pleaded not guilty.

Police Inspector Claude Weekes objected to bail for the defendant stating that investigations into the matter were still on going and referred to the accused as a known vagrant who does not have a permanent place of abode.

However Roberts, who was not represented by an attorney declared Weekes’ statement to be untrue and claimed he is not a vagrant. “I live with my auntie in Stockfarm, and investigations are already done. When I was picked up by the police I was asked several questions and given my charge at the station,” he told the court.

Chief Magistrate Evelina Baptiste told the accused that she was hesitant to grant him bail since he always seemed to be in trouble. “The public needs protection from you and you yourself may need protection from others,” she told Roberts.

However, the magistrate has opened bail to the accused if a proper surety is found.

Roberts is set to reappear in court January 07, 2013.

Roberts is involved in a court matter with Police Inspector Lincoln Corbette after Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) recommended that Corbette be “criminally” charged for shooting Roberts.

Dont blame Nicholas, blame the system for not having him institutionalized. If together we apply the pressure on the government then together we will achieve. But when we select our goals based on partisanship and demand no accountability because of pray loyalty then we shouldn’t complain about the status quo

Nicholas may be a bum and probably deserve to be away from society but he also has rights and his rights are not to be violated just because he is a bum. To suggest that Corbette is right to shoot him in the back because he is Nicholas the bum is simply wrong. It is time we start thinking like people who truly want to be progressive.

Sorry this man s a menace to society. Two weeks ago this man was roaming the lower kingshill area, going through garbage and when he tried to attach a lady coming up the road some construction workers had to shout at him to leave the lady. I was on my veranda watching that. that man does be playing with himself in public. So hitting a lady in Mahaut is no fabricated story. I have seen this man in action. He is sick. I close all my windows and doors morning and night because this man is constantly in my area. I dont feel safe and i have a little girl. Please magistrate Baptiste take ths man off the street. Please

      August 21, 2012

how do you know the man made sexual advances.you are already assuming the judge role with listening to corbette side of the story which have alot of lies in it..
there is a reason why the investigating officer asked for corbette to be charged… this is because his story has alot of inconsistencies in it..
you cannot use that same situation to compare it with that case

        August 21, 2012

I guess you were the investingating officer. What lies did Corbette tell. Back, front or sideways, Corbette should have castrated him so he would not be out there harassing people children today. Stop hating the man because he was protecting his child. Too many of our grade school children are molested and nothing is done about it. A while back a policman daughter was brutally raped in the gardens, the culprit was never found, I think this same rat should be investigated for the act. People like you need to be put in a barrel and burn alive.

I have been reading over and over about this one individual in the media and his name always sounded familiar. Now I can finally say I know Nicholas Roberts. Your family are probably hanging their heads in shame. You have been this way since you were a child, always in and out of trouble. When are you going to learn? When you are six feet deep? Geez, grow up already Nicholas! Stop wasting people’s time and the tax payers’ money with your nonsense.

    • Justice and Truth
      August 20, 2012

Since he is a troublemaker and will not repent and change, when he is six feet deep you know where his soul will be forever. Godlessness does it why he is always in trouble. He would do well to change his attitude. The magistrate should put the question to him, “does he want to change and when”. This may be a prompting for him to turn his life around for the better.

What goes around comes around and worst. What he sowed, he reaped. If he does not change, it will be far worst in time.
Corbette should not been charged. I guess this was done under pressure of that man’s family. They want some money from the Government/Police Force.

According to DNO’s report, Roberts was charged for battery and two other charges; What are the two other charges?

That man is a menace to society yet is free to walk the streets of Dominica terrorizing people. I say Dominica because a few months ago he was beaten in Mahaut.

We as Dominicans have become too tolerant and accepting of wrong doings. In June of this year, a father in Texas caught a man molesting his four year old and beat him to death; the community stood behind that father. The father was never charged because ‘he was authorized to use deadly force to protect his daughter’. In Dominica, children are molested and the molesters are free to walk the streets without any fear.

Will the DPP release him on his own recognizance and charge those who try to protect our children?

We as a community, we as police men and women, we as community leaders needs to take a stand before it is too late.

I am not defending anyone, but the woman who was beaten by Roberts, does she have a name? Was there no one on the scene to come to her defence at the time? I don’t believe that we have the whole story here. Something is not quite clear, especially in light of the situation with Corbette. Could this be a set up? Just asking?

Stupid Law which really needs to be revised. He is fortunate that he was not murdered. Molesting children or attempting to molest them is a serious offence. He should have been put away in prison for some years.
It is a shame that Corbette was charged. I hope he will fight his case with all his might. Hope he has a good Lawyer.

      August 20, 2012

      @ me

The Police did not send him to beat the woman. He was looking for trouble with the Law. He deserves to be arrested and kept in prison. He should remain there until after Christmas and New Years Season.

  25. August 20, 2012

Once is a mistake, twice is a habit, Nicholas this woman beater and child preditor need to go up stockie where them big boys awaiting to beat up his behind, coward your fate awaits you in the prison

The same man who was shot for making sexual advances towards a five yr old has upgraded to beating women…and tell me Office Corbette should not have shot him….Dominicans need to open up dere eyes… If Corbette had shot to kill he would not have had the opportunity to raise his hand on this woman. The Justice system gave him the right to do the crime…if it was me that was the woman i would sue the Court and the judges that let him go…

    August 20, 2012

Explain this to me… If the investigation hasn’t finished then why is the man being brought to court on charges? Isn’t it the job of the police to do a proper investigation then make an arrest and in the aftermath during the trial call witnesses and display the evidence. Don’t get me wrong I love that the police always catch the criminals I just hate that they have to let them go all the time as well. I would prefer to know when Officer A pick up Tom for the Crime then Tom Have to stand trial immediately and not 5 months from now. Immagine if it was you, to lose your job or be placed under indictment on half pay (if you’re lucky) while awaiting trial. Police need to buck up

      August 20, 2012

Its the way the system is. When someone commits an offence the police after finding them has 72 hours to prefer a charge. According to the nature of the offence it’s impossible to complete investigations in 72 hours. #2 I’ve seen how reluctant Dominicans are to give evidence in court and that’s itself prevents justice from being served. No Witness No Justice!

    • Justice and Truth
      August 20, 2012

      @ TW

The man beat up a woman. It is right that he was arrested because he committed an offence. It is not unusual that after someone is arrested and is detained in prison without being bailed, further investigation will be conducted. What if he beat up the woman so badly that she was obviously injured and was hospitalized? Furthermore, one who always gets into trouble is a menace to society. He is a bad man. He deserves to be incarcerated. Prison for some years should be his lot. Utilize your common sense.

    • Shameless
      August 21, 2012

The police can prefer charges at anytime during an investigation that they believe there is enough evidence to prosecute. Further, the police can arrest anyone at anytime to “Keep the peace” or if an offence is comitted in their presence. This is a simplified version of some of what is called “Judges Rules” I believe.

Further, there is a limit on the time one can be arrested without a warrant after the commission of a crime. So, in case of Roberts, the police is going by the book. Nothing wrong with that! However, that Roberts guy need to put some serious water in his wine before his luck run out. I wonder what his family will say now.

      Assertive, NOT Agressive!
