UPDATE: No bail for men in major cocaine bust

Two of the three suspected cocaine dealers, caught by authorities in Castle Comfort earlier this week, were denied bail on fears that they would interfere with police investigations.

Curt Benoit 33, of Victoria Street, Roseau and Jamaican national Ricardo Barrett, 28 appeared before Magistrate Evalina Baptist Thursday morning  on charges of importation of cocaine, possession of cocaine and possession of cocaine with intend to supply.

Absent was the third accused, Kendrick Emmanuel, a patient at the Princess Margaret Hospital who is nursing injuries sustained during the arrest.

100 pounds of cocaine was seized Monday evening in the Mitsubishi Pajero that the men occupied.

During the proceeding the Magistrate heard from Police Prosecution who express concerns that the “defendants would interfere and deter investigations, considering that are fourth individual escaped on the evening of arrest.“

The Prosecution also worried that Barrett could vacate the jurisdiction if given bail.

Lawyer for the defendants, Julian Prevost, in his plea told Magistrate Baptist that the prosecution was “vague” in not detailing exactly how the defendants would deter investigations.

Prevost added that during Barrett’s four year residency in Dominica, he was gainfully employed as a mechanic and was “looking to do something on his own.”

He reminded the court of an extradition treaty between Jamaica and Dominica that would secure Barrett’s presence for trial  and argued that the court should grant bail to the suspects with “serious conditions.”

Before handing down her decision Magistrate Baptist agreed that the Police needed more time to pursue its investigations pointing out, “the men should reppear in court every seven days so that the court have an opportunity to realize what’s going on.”

They are expected to reappear in court on October 10 for prelimary inquiry.

people there is a rolling seven day review… understand that there is always a posibility that before a judge one can always make an appeal ;) for some reason, my people “DOMINICANS” are a bit blonde by the looks of it… then we say “borboll” because we never firstly understood the facts…. an appeal can only be one if one’s circumstances have changed (meaning once one have met the courts requirementshe is more than likely to be bailed. people jail wasnt made for animals…. jail isnt the solution….. what we witness in Dominica today is a perfect reflection of a society that isnt working properly hence quick modifications are fixed into place to alow to work)…. any lack of oppurtunity country, state,or island in this 21st century will witness drugs on the streets as present in dominica FACT…… drugs is present in all parts of the world FACTS it blooms in the medicational industry, the black markets etc, but the point being that if u have a island runnin propperly drugs will not be on the streets…. because there will be suffient oppurtunites for young people….. but if on the chain we place ourself as the mule then we witness DOMINICA….. I know it sounds hash however this is the truth of politics and power….

Well how about we isolate everyone who thinks like primitive Idiots,@Gullyboy, on an isolated estate village, Pump all the cocaine there and Watch as everyone of you turn to crackheads and start killing your pathetic selves off. That would be a problem solved for the civilized people of Dominica who actually give a sh!t about the future of their kids and grand kids growing up in Dominica.

Without The Police Service, You’re whole family would be in danger of being slaughtered like animals by your enemies and Potential serial killers, Lack of police presence would be the Last thing any citizen of Dominica would want… Those of you who hate the Police are very very ignorant and narrow minded. Playing tough on the internet and on the streets but the first people you call when the shit hits the fan is who? The Police!, So Quit Being so ungrateful to the Police Force and be thankful that the DPF would be there to help you when your sorry @$$3$ get robbed or threatened or w/e.

All those opposing this bust are a bunch of hypocritical morons who would run to the police if these scums of Society sold crack to their kids and other family members who would get hooked and turn to crackheads to EMBARRASS Allu.

In dominica right now things are very tight… Being a college graduate I really face hard times in getting a proper job.. After taking so many years of proper education and then struggle to get a job, its tough.. Most times u gotta do wa u gotta do.. ONLY THE MAN IN D KITCHEN FEELS THE HEAT.. Only some know what its like to have no food on ur table.. When u looking at ur kids n they’re hungry n need something to eat. DRUGS sometimes is d only way out.. Drugs will push u far in this country if u aint got caught.. N what’s most interesting is the bigger heads that fight against drugs in public are the ones dat are behind the heavy drug dealings.. U see them wit fancy cars n believe dat they got big jobs but its not money from job.. Its from drugs. So don’t matter what happen in this country, the level of drugs will increase because so many students are graduating every year n have no jobs.. LORD I PRAY THAT I AINT GOT BUSTED.

Alas, sorry for the hurting families and friends… but it is always shocking to find out your nice cousin, friend or son.. is involved in high tech drugs…. see… they never tell you that they are… it is secret hush, hush, hush.

But I mean, so much drugs… I guess some big drug heads are rolling in disbelief right now…. somebody is very scared right now.. .while others are crazed and pissed off. I HATE drugs…. too much damage.. so I am never sympathetic to drugsmen…when I see them..

I see them as people who want to destroy my little brother’s life. The brother, I am spending money on and assisting to get an education at the Dominica State College. I see them like little demons and threats, enticements and treacherous things.. lying in wait for him. Even if I teach him right…I know he can still fall prey to them.. so I am happy when some are locked up. Just need to get down on my knees and pray for protection of our young folks… too many are down the wrong path already.

Too many young ones are smoking cigarettes and marijuana and drinking. I hate it……. they are so young….when they start now….we are going to be in big problems. Who is going to be the leaders of tomorrow? the mum and dads? the examples? Oh…Lord Jehovah… save our country…. save us indeed.

But yet You say.. “Do not be afraid; Do not be dismayed”… so I will put my trust in You..fully and completely.

Police in D/a are slow. They should know that these are diversionary tactics these big drug dealers use. Don’t let your guard down on this one bust. They let you hold these fellas and get busy celebrating while they slip away with bigger hauls in another part of the island.

So….I know you saying they cannot be every where at the same time. No they can’t, and that’s the point exactly. But they would greately improve their chances of stopping this COCAINE BEAST if they would divert most of their time and resources they spend uslessly going after Marijuana.

This coke thing is huge. 100 lbs of coke is not just little Dominican boys stuff, that’s what the big dealers let you see on the surface. This is major. They always let you catch little weights to get you busy, while they slip heavy weights by somewhere else. Think! Stop the coke.

This doesn’t make sense. Ricardo and I have been best friends since 1993 and he is not into drugs and does not take it. He’s very positive and very uplifting. He went to Dominica to further his career and for a better life. We spoke two weeks ago and he mentioned an opportunity to start up his own garage and that he met some men who offered to help him finance it and he wanted my help to sort out the finances to ensure everything was right. This Ricardo I read about is not my friend Ricardo. I read the article and called and he’s not picking up and as I get confirmation from his family that they locked him up its hard to believe because everyone who knows Ricardo knows that he’s hard working and proud, he’ll rather starve than to ask for help, and he’ll starve to give help to others as he so frequently did for me. I know my friend and this story does not add up.

well my dear friend of recardo mayb the white rock money was to help him with the garage and as you said someone offered him to help finance it maybe thats the finance. all thats the way life goes; you think you know someone very well and then they surprise you. i work at a certain place in town and he comes there to get food and the persons i see him frequenting are not of the best character.

Just be strong and pray on the behalf of your fren

      • Oh Me Oh My
        April 22, 2011

Your friend Ricardo came to Dominica to help himself, being a drug dealer is not helping oneself but destroying others, same as the Haitian guys caught in Guada with $15000, smuggling other Haitians to the French Islands, he also Came to DA to help himself, the property he bought the government should take it away from him and deport him and all his family back to Haiti the very same way the USA government is doing,
traveling to Guada with Da passport and committing their crime, next thing dropping our passport not their Haitians passport only to do more harm to our island and Dominicans

When Dominicans committed crimes in foreign countries Haitians Jamaicans and all are rejoicing, one Haitians meet me and told me in my face what do i have to say about the three dominicans guys in SM, and was very upset because one of the guys killed in from his country

I am not against people who come to DA to better themselves but coming to destroy our people and our island they need to be deported back to their country after serving jail time, the very same way that our people are being deported from foreign countries

They are expected to reappear in court on October 10. Forgive me if I am wrong but I would like to think that the reason for the case to be heard on October 10 would be for the High Court assizes, but if not,may i ask why is it taking so long for this case to be taken to Court and be dealt with long before October 10. It is so ironic how some cases of less significances can be brought to the court at such break neck speed and a case so serious as this is taking this long,it is a joke or is this going to be like the case in Antigua a few years ago when all of a sudden a big cocaine bust went missing at the Police Station long befor the case. Would it be correct and lawful if one of the men involved was given back some COKE and the evidence tarnished? Many, many, many eyebrows would be raised. Remember the wrongful giving back of the unlicensed firearm to the owner in that case of intimidation and the famous VILLAS visit? Isn’t it a FACT that the evidence was taken unlawfully from the court and given to the culprit. However, the court had retrieved the firearm. Was there national concern or widespread raising of brows? Do you get my drift?

What if unlawful acts committed are allowed to go unpunished, no investigations are conducted, culprits go almost Scott Free. Imagine a former acting chief telling Dominicans at a Press conference that the prosecutor was wrong to request that the gun should be brought back to the court as evidence? At all times the laws of the land must be respected by every Dominican. No one should be above the Constitution and Laws. Whatever kind of illegal, unlawful activities occur whether in Public or Private Offices, irrespective of who commits the act justice should be done. All citizens should be equal before the law.

america is fighting the war on drugs, yet truck loads of this drugmoney is driven to US banks where it becomes clean money….the bankers are charged a million dollar fine and any more accoutability stops right there…

well be speedy with the case and lock them away. take this evil off our streets do it for our children, the future of this country. we must avoid turning dominica into one of those drug havens that seems to be becoming the definition of latin american and caribbean countries. and as for the jamaican, i can see why they are hassled in barbados. they leave their Garza an Gully and Tivoli Gardens slums to spread their bile in the rest of the caribbean and this we cannot allow. i believe that within caricom some legislation should be put in place or some agreement met to deal with regional criminals such as these.
