No formal arrests yet in NDFD robbery

Deputy Police Commissioner Carrette

Police are questioning two persons in connection with an armed robbery at the National Development Foundation of Dominica (NDFD) during working hours on Wednesday.

Deputy Police Commissioner Cyril Carrette told Dominica News Online that no formal arrests have been made, however persons are being questioned.

Two masked men escaped with the day’s earnings at NDFD after holding staff at gunpoint. NDFD’s Executive Director Ronald Knight, who was in his office at the time of the crime, said there are plans to beef up security and engage the services of a counselor for traumatized employees.

The incident occurred at 3:50 p.m.

It appears as though criminals are getting desperate and bold to be doing those things in broad daylight. That is cause for serious concern,” Carrette noted.

He appealed the public to come forward to the police with any helpful information on the matter.

“We are urging the public to do not hesitate to give any information that they have no matter how minute or insignificant they think it is to the police. It can be used to make a link,” he said.

Anonymous………………………..you must be crazy dont blame the government…….. when a child does bad do u blame the child or the parent, when u plant a flower dont you place a stick or something to keep it straight, direct the growth. who is to be blamed when there is no gainful employment. its not that people are lazy is just that when they do work people take advantage of them due to their lack of education. a man works hard for his day to get $40 u tell me wat can u do with that. listen i blame GOVERNMENT… u dont give a man fish u teach him how to fish….

reply to mr john doh….the police ask everyone for assistance in order to help you the people … the police realize that they cant do it on their own but with the help of the public as well… i think that your comments are ridiculous…crime is everybody’s business….crime affects all of us….and if we are divided we cannot be effective in reducing the crime rate….this is where we should be united…this is not the time for negative criticism…let us put that aside and focus how we can solve this problem which is escalating and before it gets out of control

Wait till the bandits turn their guns on your or your family and then the comments about unwillingness to help the police will disappear. it is always easy to dump on the police when you are not the victim of crime.

Police need to show them self to be friendly to people so that when issues like this happen they will be willing to co-operate with law enforcement.

Many of the Police Officers treat people unfairly, Recently– after a young man was placed under handcuffs.. one police take a construction sign post and hit the feller in his face , cutting the man nose..

and no justice for that. Those as the sort of things that get me real pissedoff .. the guy was not a drug dealing .. he was just taken in for stealing domec current.

Police has to learn how to do their job and some example needs to be made of some of them

you people dont really understand what we are dealing with. Take a look at the struggling villages what has the government done for the people who cant work in the bank who cant work at lime who cant work for the big companies i mean where can one get a start in life if one has no money no assets. we look at people and say all things about them without not knowing where they come from or even where they sleep at night. i dont blame the bank robbers, for all i care there should be more and they should go straight to the ministry ……create jobs for the unemployed, teach the young the skills they need so when they grow up they wont be bank robbers. we as a society look up and aspire to the gold chains the rims and the nice things and we know they are drug dealers so tell me wat would u do…..change starts from above not below..get thet sraight suckers!!!!

@truth: It is really disheartening to read such negative comments. Stealing is stealing regardless of who takes from whom, is a crime and is not tainted by any political color. This applies in particular to the NDFD, which is a private, not-for profit institution, set up to assist small businesses, very often one-man/woman enterprises that would not normally be considered for advice or funding by the regular commercial institutions. In its nearly thirty years of existence it has helped to create employment, and hope precisely, among the the poorer members of our society. No doubt there is room for improvement in our police force as there is for those of us who post such damaging and ill- informed comments. I am confident the police will catch the thieves, which will be their contribution towards building a fairer and more equitable country for all of us. We should encourage them and applaud their efforts.

@truth: It is really disheartening to read such negative comments. Stealing is stealing, regardless of who takes from whom, is a crime and is not tainted with a political colour! Particularly so in this case as the NDFD is a private, non-profit institution, set up to assist small businesses, very often one-man/woman operations, that normally would not be entertained by commercial lenders. Since its nearly thirty years existence it has helped to create employment, and hope amongst the poorer members of our society. There may well be room for improvement in our police force and we should encourage them as much as we should look at ourselves before posting such damaging and ill-informed comments. I am confident the police will apprehend the thieves, which will be their contribution to building a fair and equitable country to the benefit of us all.

You people has to realise the police cant do everything by themselves. With the help of the citizens and the general public the officers will help put away these vicious vindictive criminals and would help make dominica a safer place. Now is not the time to be saying these things we need to come together and help make our Sweeet Dominica the way things use to be.

I like that fact that your Mr. TOP COP is reaching out to the public for help, how ever when they table turn and members of the public are in your hands you treat them with no respect for them or humanity.
People know and may know about things that’s going on but will never talk because of the way you all (members of the Dominica Police Force) treat civilians. and the officers do these things based on your directives. STOP ILL-TREATING people and u all may get some help..

These incidents are indicators of the desperation of criminals and the state of the Dominican economy. While I am strongly against activities such as these, and that engaging in hard work is the right way to acquire what one needs; I must say that this has not been instilled in everyone. The culture of dependence is so great that some of our people have lost the will to engage in gainful, legal employment and have adopted the philosophy that life and the world owes them a living – that they are entitled to what they want without working for it. This is another form of mental slavery. Government cannot provide employment for everyone, but government can help in empowering people so that they could provide their own employment if they cannot find employment. Sadly this is not quite the case, many of our people have not been weaned from the pre-election red clinic and hand outs, hence their choice. It is a sad state of affairs but re-education among other things must be done to get us out of this mess.
