‘Paro’ breaks into car, attracts crowd

The man, in brown, being arrested by police

Excitement broke on Independence Street on Wednesday afternoon when it was reported that a man, who everyone said is a ‘Paro,’ was found inside a parked car.

In Dominica the word ‘Paro’ is generally used for someone who is homeless or is a drug addict or an alcoholic.

It was reported that the car was involved in an accident on Tuesday and sections of the right side window was shattered. Witnesses said the Paro pushed his hands through the shattered window, unlocked the car and went in. It was said he was found lying in the back seat of the vehicle.

News on the man entering the vehicle spread like wildfire and a crowd soon gathered.

Many were calling for some kind of vigilante justice, with one man demanding that the ‘Paro’s’ hands be broken.

“He broke into my car once,” the man fumed.

Others said the man has a ‘bad habit’ of entering parked vehicles in Roseau and he should be dealt with ‘appropriately.’

The police was soon called and the man was arrested.

    People are bored.

People are filled with negative emotions.

Why else would they even find this exciting?

    Read it again:

A drunk walking down the street sees a car with a window smashed in. He reaches in, unlocks the door, gets in, and falls asleep in the back seat.

People passing by see it and go crazy! People begin releasing their anger. It is what we call “misdirected anger”. Listen to the things they are saying. “Break the man’s hands!” This tells me more about the people in the street than the man in the car.

Yes, the man in the car should be arrested. Not so much to punish him but to see that he gets whatever help he needs. Evidently he has a history of this behavior. The people in the street needed an old fashioned “open air service”. I would gladly preach the gospel to them. After they have encountered Christ the next time they would say “there goes me but for the grace of God”, not “break his hands”.

    Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Evangelist.

Another one who made me laugh. The identical thought crossed my mind. A man breaks into a car and is lying in it and the entire town congregates to see it. Some people love where the action is and love to be in it. I noticed some are students. What else was going on there? What significant matter there?

:) I read the article and some of the comments here and I have to say that I was impressed that the people care enough to get angry and gather, whether they ARe bored or correct in how the individual was treated. Turning ones back leaves to complacent people and when that happens you leave All iin the hands of your government. Now that you have all proven that you have passion whether through the actual gathering, or comments here, why don’t you all gather together to find a humane solution to helping this man and others like him. Now that takes a village of positive people! I hope you take my advice because countries outside of yours have failed miserably when they took a back seat. Get front and center and do it peacefully. <3

For true national interest that affects and improvise our daily lives in Dominica like lack of jobs, poor healthcare, 1% salary raises, dismantling of the Agriculture and gross mis-management of our Tax monies we refuse to come out in numbers to engage. But we will do so for Paro breaking car.

We are a lost society……I can see many more of this behaviour continuing because that is what we give credence.

Good day readers, this car should not be on the government road after two hours of the accident, this car window was broken. this crack head people don’t think like us. breaking this man hand for going in your car of a window is open to the world really is inhuman. You all people don’t have a job to go too. this is no use to call police. Where i am from. you don’t remove your car. next day you see the car frame. he didn’t steal any thing. please let this man go with a warning. murders the justice system should keep in prison. Dominican The world see, and read about you all. This is a new era.

SO BECAUSE I GAVE MY HONEST OPINION TO THE STORY ,DNO DELETED MY COMMENT.. lets try this again.

Others said the man has a ‘bad habit’ of entering parked vehicles in Roseau and he should be dealt with ‘appropriately.’

why should you park your vehicle and leave it unlocked, i dont blame the paro, the opportunities are provided for them . he should of hot wire the vehicles and then people will learn a lesson.

THEY HAD TELL YOU THE MAN LEFT HIS VEHICLE UNLOCKED. TELL ME WHAT ABOUT THAT FOLLOWING STATEMENT YOU DIDN’T UNDERSTAND OR ARE YOU SIMPLY LACKING KNOWLEDGE

“It was reported that the car was involved in an accident on Tuesday and sections of the right side window was shattered. Witnesses said the Paro pushed his hands through the shattered window, unlocked the car and went in.”

      • Justice and Truth
        December 6, 2012

The vehicle should have been removed from that area and placed in a secured place. Vehicles tempt him. If he checks and finds them unlocked, he will go in and sit or lie in it. He must be a tired and sleepy man. In addition if he searches and finds documents and money he will take them. Drivers must ensure that they lock their vehicles. If he does not drive, it is a good thing. Otherwise he will try to drive away with it.

DNO I disagree with the definition of Paro. Originally the word Paro was assigned to a crack addict. A drunk is referred to as Gwogere , sooola or a womyal. In St Lucia they call the crack addict Jumbies. If crack heads, womyal etc were to be put into one category I think the name is viyais neg.
When Chubby ade the song Paro yo Paro he wasn’t referring to womyal or waywards he was talking about crack heads – the real Paros.

I do not think any contamination occurred. Was the man not inside the vehicle? His fingerprints were on the door and inside. Knowing the man and what he is capable of doing, I doubt that the police will be concerned about that just as long they did not obstruct the police.
Did any of the bystanders touch the door and entered inside? They were merely curious which is why they congregated there. They know the man and wanted to see what will happen to him. Just plain curiosity.

it is not his fault, william is not right in his head, he is mad man that like to escape, they sould keep him in the hospital where he is secure from harm to himself and others

    • Justice and Truth
      December 6, 2012

He cannot be kept incarcerated indefinitely. He does not appear to harm anyone. He should be sedated. Hopefully, this may help him. The authorities should assist him in this respect. Someone in authority will have to give him the prescribed medication on a daily basis, first thing in the morning according to the prescribed instructions, before or after a meal – breakfast, lunch, dinner. If this were approved, he may have to take it two or three times a day. Some people do not like swallowing pills. He could be given a relevant liquid with his meals or an injection. The latter is another problem, to inject someone.
This should be suggested to the government/social service department. He needs help and they should find a way to assist him. There must be a solution to reverse his actions. Keep in mind, as all of us, he is a beloved child of God no less loved because of his impediment.

Calling on the Police to get him out he started running down the road astaphan same thing all the coins falling to the ground. So tell me if you see someone like that in your vehicle not a hard damn slap i would give him in his face and teach him a lesson. We quick to say mad because we not in the position. No wonder, Dominica like that, there are no jobs, and the place is so boring, so any little thing they are happy to gather, because there are no entertainment places, no movie houses, children have no where to play, no playgrounds. So, any little thing to do to get recreation and when they finish they saying DA sweet, my arse, DA HARD.

For those of us who don’t know… what is a ‘Paro’?

    • Matriculation
      December 5, 2012

      @ Orangutan Man

A ‘paro’ is the local term for what americans call a junkie. Basically it is a drug addict, more specifically crack junkies.

In recent times the term have been extended to almost al derelict street people, what Americans call ‘hobos’ since many are consumers of crack. The term came into popular usage circa 1990 Hope that helps.

      • GWATANCE
        December 5, 2012

That is our problem, we pretend to be too educated, In Dominican terms, a Paro is a useless being in Society due to what he is purportd to be because of his unfortunate addiction to drugs and other illegal substances. That is the problem, give these guys respect and a job. I know most are talented and capable of doing a job. Therefore, allow your communities to trust and give them jobs. They do not only take the money to buy drugs or alcohol, I have seen guys buy food as a priority. A Paro in Dominican termsis an unfortunate who is forced to use these substances
when he is unable to get a job for survival . Remember also, those who were enjoying this spectable can become Paros overnight due to the system in our Society

    • GWATANCE
      December 5, 2012

I ask the same question. My definition is an unfortuunate person in many cases talented but due to such publicity is not respected by your communities therefore, is allowed to do menial work or no work.I consider this as a grave error of judgement. I will say when I am in DA and i know the capable talented guys, I get them to do my under diciplined control. The communities are in error, but I do know on my permanent return, there will be a trustworthy PARO JOB AGENCY. These photos are disturbing with so many young men on the scence, which indicates if this young man had their opportunities, he would be doing something worthwhile and in the situations he finds himself . GIVE these so Paros a break

  64. December 5, 2012

Well Be thankful the crowd gathered for something simple instead of something worse. The Paro (DNO please describe a “Paro”) need help I don’t think is is calculating gathering a crowd he needs a place to relax …He did not cause any damage to any property of harm anyone. he needs help

    December 5, 2012

People let us look at this through different lenses. This is good citizens or neighborhood watch. When citizens are involved, it helps to prevent and discourage crime. If you look at bigger countries, citizens are not paying attention to what is around them and that is why there are so many crimes is bigger countries. So small islands don’t get too busy to observe and report what you see, and yes surround these unlawful citizens – shame them, it works.

Wrong is wrong and it cannot be encouraged. Dominica is a small place and this is normal/expected and not the only place it happens. Breaking into someone’s vehicle is a criminal act whether it was (already) damaged or not. It is wrong…think if it were your vehicle….

no excuse for criminal activity….people like to pick and choose and want big money fast but one has to start small…make sacrifices and then build on it, but we get jealous when we see people have what they have and want to share it with them….what God give you use it and or find help, not steal, take drugs or whatever else is done…
