PM and Peltier resolve court matter

An amicable solution has been reached between journalist Matthias Peltier Jr. and Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit as it relates to a court matter between them.

The prime minister had taken legal action against Peltier for an article posted in his Times Newspaper entitled “Million Dollar Assets, $5,000 Salary” in 2007, for which the prime minister argued was defamatory and malicious.

According to a DBS news report this morning, the two teams have found resolve and the matter is over. Those involved have been advised not to disclose the terms and conditions of their agreement, the report stated.

The parties were scheduled to appear in court for mediation yesterday.

The newspaper article was posted on the front page of the August 29, 2007 issue and  had raised questions about what it said was $1 million worth of lands that the prime minister had acquired within a four-week period  in 2005.

Skerrit took legal action against Times Publishing’s management after they refused to retract the story.

IT WAS TIME THE LENNOX GIVE OUR P,M A BREAK AND STOP TRYING TO LEAVE IN HIS SHADOW

  5. INTELLECTUAL GANSTA!!!
    November 11, 2010

Looks to me like a lose, lose situation…PM still has not cleared his “good” name, and Matt caved in.
Both men,had a chance to either salvage,or solidify their credibility, honor, and integrity, and in my humble opinion, both failed……Instead, there was compromise.
If your (ok,our) “dearest” PM,wanted to save his “good name”, put all his doubters, and skeptics, and the dark cloud of rumors that has been dogging him for quite sometime now, to rest once and for all, he would not have withdrawn.
In the best interest, and to protect and maintain the ‘Integrity of the Office of the PRIME MINISTER of The Commonwealth of DOMINICA,he should have proceeded with his lawsuit…It would have been the right thing to do…..He has an obligation to the Dominican People.

And if Matt had any integrity and “intestinal fortitude”,and knows what he printed, and the things that he said, about the PM were true……Then he, should have stuck to his story, by saying….”You know what Mr.PM?,if you want to drop the Lawsuit that’s fine, go on. But I am sticking to my story”…And if he had any “balls”,he should have added insult to injury, and said…”Multimillion dollar assets,$12,000.00 a month salary ?????(Updated version.L.O.L.)…..Because that’s the cool-aid he is pouring out there on a daily basis, through his radio show, right?,He has an obligation to his listeners, his supporters, and to those who believed him and contributed to his defense fund…..no?…OK, I digress…..

But no, he took the bone that was thrown to him and ran with it.Thereby compromising any ounce of credibility, and integrity that he had left…….Could he have proven any of the things that he printed,or said?…Remember,he never filed a counterclaim. So he made it easier for the Plaintiff to prove his case……..
What ever happens to “standing up for ”truths”, and the things that one “believes” in?……There is an old saying..”He who stands for nothing, will fall for anything”……
People must be willing, and able to stand up for the things they believe in.They must have principle.
If you cannot prove and back up what are talking about with logics and facts, you might as well just keep your mouth shut.

Let us all keep in mind that in any civil lawsuit, the plaintiff is the one who has to prove his/her case. The burden of proof is on the plaintiff…And it is all about the “Preponderance of Evidence”.It is a standard of proof that must be met by the plaintiff if he or she is to win a civil action.(1). He or she must present, through testimony and exhibits, enough evidence to support that claim…And(2), It must be”Clear and convincing evidence”…..
Could the PM have met those standards, and prove his case?…..Well,i guess we will never know…..
And oh yes!…I wonder if Mr,L.L.,is shaking his head in disbelief ?…..
We shall wait, and we will keep listening…….

    Anyway,..All the best to all….and…
    Profound Peace!!

i am surprised at Matt i expect Matt to proceeed with the Angelo and Lennox are our heroes in DA but i am beginiing to believe Skerrit has a hold on allllllllll Dominicans. His advisor Astaphan is a real good advisor to Get Matt to squash that case . I say Hats off to Tony and Skerrit.

But i am sure they are working a strategy to prevent Lennox from proceeding but Knowing Lennox that will not take him. Lennox if you need assistance to proceed with bubbles we will pledge , there is where we will know who owns the villas. Lennox GO FOR IT .Dont bow down.

If Matt had concrete evidence against the Prime Minister as he was saying, how could an amicable solution be reached. If the prime minister argued that the information was defamatory and malicious how could the the two teams have found resolve and the matter is over? It is either the evidence was true or untrue.

Matt this was not a matter between you and the Prime Minister only, you made it a national matter when you as a journalist chose to air the story in the newspaper and the radio. It became the civic responsibility of every Dominican Citizen to speak against the wrongs that Prime Minister Skerritt was committing because we expect better from the office of Prime Minister.

Matt I am very troubled about the way you misled the people of Dominica, they stood by you, some of them were even willing to give their hard earned money for your defense.

THIS OUTCOME shows that you are a GREAT LIAR, you misled the Dominican people for greedy gain. Matt you owe the Prime Minister a PUBLIC APOLOGY and most of all you owe Dominicans worldwide a PUBLIC APOLOGY.

Matt you have lost all your credibility as a journalist.

    November 10, 2010

Why do i have a gut feeling, that Lennox, as well as some Dominicans feels very betrayed by Matt?….Then again, maybe it’s just me………
We can speculate all we want, but only the parties involve and those who were present in that room, know what was said, or what transpired.
Who really is the biggest looser here, is it Matt, the PM,or The Dominican People?.Or maybe, I should reverse that, and ask,….who is the biggest winner?…..I will let you judge for yourselves…..
But wait a minute, how about “credibility”, or “intestinal fortitude”?..No?..OK,….Not even accountability?…Oh well, I guess not.
How about if we all came to the assumption, that it boiled down to,..”letting bygones be bygones”?…. Agreed, yes?, then again,..maybe not…….Who paid for all legal fees of both parties?,…and,……why?……..All part of the “deal”,or “agreement”,to use a better word…(L.O.L.).

You know what?, “Belief”, is a subjective personal basis for individual behavior, while “truth” is an objective state, independent of individual, i.e., a fact.

There is an old Indian saying…..”Fool me once, shame on you.Fool me twice, shame on me…….

Anyway…..All the best to all, and……..

    @Just asking questions:

I suspect the real reason the Judge or Master of the Court did that was to set up Matt and his allies for a stiff jail sentence if that information goes public.

You see the government of the Commonwealth of Dominica is made up of three departments: The Judiciary, the Parliament or legislative arm of the Government, and the Cabinet or what is referred to as the Executive Branch.

The Judiciary gives the impression that is matters less about the political dimension of the two other arms of Government. Fact is these people who make up the judiciary are human; they have their political preferences and can have a significant level of fun on the job and laugh their head out at their decisions. They can be like a Frankenstein – create any monster they wish for the society and enjoy the reactions they get from the society which is usually bewildered by the functions of the Judiciary.

Now just think of it – a Man like Matt (who was President of the Media Workers Association of Dominica) that was once described by former PM James as the Third Force in Dominica. This man once had to be cautioned by Mr. Edward Alexander , an Advisor to former Prime Minister James on Television – ” Mr. Peltier ,you are speaking to the Prime Minister of Dominica” , ” That is not the way you address the Prime Minister!!!” This journalist was later fired from Marpin (the Old Marpin) and subsequently joined Kairi FM, was fired, and hired by Q-95.

Between being fired from Kairi and joining Q , Matt and a few other people formed The Times News Paper and the Times became a force to be reckoned with.

But between 2000 to 2010 Dominica saw the following newspapers ( it does not include political Newspapers like Workers Voice then) seeking readership and Adds: The Chronicle, The Sun News Paper, The Independent News Paper, Tropical Star News Paper, and The Times News Paper. Today in 2010 we have only the Chronicle and the Sun Newspaper.

Matt undoubtedly has worked for all these Newspapers at one time in his journalistic carrier. The young man has work in Radio, TV, and Newspaper and may even have his own Internet Radio Station and Online News Paper and TV outlets in the not too distant future.

To say that Matt has made a number of public figures nervous would be an understatement of the century. The man is good at his job and is Dearing most of the time.

Well public figures in Dominica of whatever segment have had enough of Matt’s blose and have decided to shackle his impetuousness, his daringness, his boldness, his loud mouth, his writing sting, his scalding tongue, and his blogging muscles. In other words, Matt should go get another job, another life!!!

Matt has been castrated as a journalist and there may never be a statute of limitation ever allowing him to reveal the contents of this mediation. Not even in his autobiography or a Biography published by our leading writers in the Diaspora.

One can now understand why Tony, SC, can take pot shots at Matt at this very moment. Oh boy, they are tempting Matt to break his silence.

It would be interesting to see if Tony and The PM Skerrit would exchange e-mails of the substantial matter to each other and see if these e-mails will be hacked and made public on a radio talk show say on a Sunday, between a Monday to a Friday and even a Saturday!!!!

    Boys I dare u.

That reminds me of Destra song, I dare u!!!

Excerpts of a speech from the UN General Secretary for World Press Freedom Day this year. Quite informative and interesting for all Dominicans.

Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right, enshrined in article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. But around the world, there are Governments and those wielding power who find many ways to obstruct it.

Independent radio and television stations are forced off the air if they criticize Government policy. The censors are also active in cyberspace, restricting the use of the Internet and new media.

Some journalists risk intimidation, detention and even their lives, simply for exercising their right to seek, receive and impart information and ideas, through any media, and regardless of frontiers.

Last year, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) condemned the killing of 77 journalists. These were not high-profile war correspondents, killed in the heat of battle. Most of them worked for small, local publications in peacetime. They were killed for attempting to expose wrongdoing or corruption.

I condemn these murders and insist that the perpetrators are brought to justice. All Governments have a duty to protect those who work in the media. This protection must include investigating and prosecuting those who commit crimes against journalists.

Impunity gives the green light to criminals and murderers, and empowers those who have something to hide. Over the long term, it has a corrosive and corrupting effect on society as a whole.

This year’s theme is freedom of information: the right to know. I welcome the global trend towards new laws which recognize the universal right to publicly held information.

Unfortunately, these new laws do not always translate into action. Requests for official information are often refused, or delayed, sometimes for years. At times, poor information management is to blame. But all too often, this happens because of a culture of secrecy and a lack of accountability.

We must work to change attitudes and to raise awareness. People have a right to information that affects their lives, and States have a duty to provide this information. Such transparency is essential to good government.

The United Nations stands with persecuted journalists and media professionals everywhere. Today, as every day, I call on Governments, civil society and people around the world to recognize the important work of the media, and to stand up for freedom of information.

Here we go again Dumminican – Matt and the Times haven’t apologize or retracted their statement. that means they did no lose, they just cut their financial losses
Understand the Legal Game. The Republicans in American, buried opposition with lawsuits after lawsuits, it works.
If Skerrit had won, Matt and the Times would have had a front page apology kissing Skerrit behind. Skerrit just scarce the shit out of them by putting lawyers on their payroll and empting their wallet.. Matt will think twice before messing with Baby Dick Skerrit – our new Dictator.
On behalf of true Dominicans, Matt Peltier we are sorry for your financial loss. Please set up some sort of Reporters Defense Fund to pay lawyer fees in the future, because you can’t give up the fight. We in the Diaspora will send money. Dominica needs Checks and Balances. Think about it!

If I am challenging someone for false accusation and defamation of my character the least I would demand is a public apology. I am no scholar but simple logic would dictate that somebody issue a “mi culpa” The PM in the interest of national pride and integrity of office should demand an apology from Matt. The silence is sickening or rather deafening.
Let us assume that Matt was at fault the natural human tendency would be to engage in damage control. Mr. Skerrit should simply request an apology bearing in mind that there are a number of allegations of malfeasance- The Villas and other Properties. A request for an apology would serve Skerrit well by actually raising the level of doubt on all the other accusations.

I am not in a position to accuse Matt of selling out or taking any money. I am inclined to believe that the compromise was done to save other faces or individuals-public figures as well as private citizens. If I must express my emotion I would just say one thing. The office of the PM is the people’s office and like FORTUNE TELLER said we the people have a right to know the outcome off this accusation. If the people must continue to trust our PM then we ought to know whether the PM was falsely accused. Likewise can we trust one of our premier media personalities Mr. Matt Peltier? In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

I pray this article will open the eyes of Dominicans. Hopefully they will see through the corruption and deceit before it is too late. All praises be to Allah, I have never registered to vote and I will never support a post-colonial secular state. Now, do not be silly and add that since I do not vote I do not have a say in country affairs; rubbish, I do have a say because I am a Dominican born and a holder of a Dominican passport. I do not hold dual citizenship of any country. Foreigners rights are protected here thus my rights must be protected as well. Thank you! May Allah quickly destroy capitalism and secularism very soon Ameen. May Allah curse the agents of cruelty and wickedness in this country. Ameen.

Secondly, let me share with Dominicans what is really going on with their country in a global context. Please ponder those Allah/God has given insight. Dominica was a friend of Taiwan for many years, however, it crossed over to China. The true question is what are the benefits for the politicans who took this initiative? No one disputes the benefits of the infrastructural developments that has taken place over the years. May I ask, are these smoke screens whilst politicans from both China and Dominica benefit under the table with crooked deals? What are these deals and what are the implications for Dominica? What were the terms in the memorandum of understanding between Dominica and China? Why wasn’t the public informed seeing that the relations between Chinese and Dominica have great global implications? How will these dealings affect us in the future on the international stage?

Firstly, since we do not know what the memorandum of understanding entails, when we look around we can see the happenings in our land with Dominica and China. Firstly, China wants control of Taiwan’s resources, thus she needs our vote in the UN. This fight has been between China and Taiwan for a very long time. Dr. Ku Ming Tao, a Taiwanese medical professor at Ross University admits this in an informal discussion with me many years ago. This is the overall goal, thus China is doing projects in many developing countries. Dominicans must not be fooled! Where is China getting these millions of dollars to give us? Hahaha, from yours and other developing countries pockets you fools! How? When Chinese get free concessions on our ports to establish their stores with their cheap products then we buy their stuff, where does the money goes to? It goes back to China dummy to buy more products so who makes the money? The government of China because China is a communist state! This is where the money is coming from. Why do you think hardly any Dominicans are employed on these projects? So that China cuts it’s expenses by employing Dominicans dummy hahaha! Their workers get a stipend! How much do chinese contribute to our economy by shopping etc? Do you see chinese buying KFC, pizza hut or name brand clothes? Hahaha, I don’t see that, do you? These clothes were mainly made in China anyway at cheap labour so why would they waste their money buying that? So China has effectively placed its human resource in many countries to set up businesses so that’s how they make money off their economies. Do not fool yourselves Dominica, China is only out there to benefit greatly, it is a superpower and they are all the same. China is exploiting South Africans worse than ever in their mining for gold. Common Dominicans, do you think China loves us so much it will simply grant us handouts? Hahaha, we are really silly in Dominica. China according to BBC report has a 20-30 yr plan in it’s massive build of it’s economy and any smart business person knows that he has to invest/spend in order to gain profits and that’s how China is milking Dominica. Know that China does not treat it’s people very well, thus don’t expect China to treat us with love! Look into China’s history. No free speech up to this day!

How does this paragraph relate to what is going on between Matt and Skerrit? Part of the deal with China and Skerrit is that China has to keep Skerrit in power to accomplish it’s objectives. If the United Workers Party comes into power it may destabilise China’s aims and objectives. China has taught Skerrit well the art of concealing evidence and how to maintain political power. Skerrit will get away with corruption under the table. China has to protect Skerrit, it’s in it’s interest! Dominica will feel the corruption but will never be able to prove it in a court of law. How can we expect anything from our judicial system regarding a just outcome between the Prime Minister and Matt? This same judicial system cannot even protect or administer justice to murderers! Matt has a post colonial capitalist mind and must succum to Skerrit’s ‘amicable’ deal. Skerrit knows he cannot sue Matt. He knows what Matt said is true thus they had to strike a deal. Every hypocrite has a price thus Skerrit knew Matt has a price. The Prime Minister of Dominica had insight into his opponent thus exploited his weakness. This is not just mere talk, this is simple commonsense and this has been done to historical figures past and present! The bible and Islamic Historical accounts are filled with this! The problem is many christians do not read their scriptures with deep insight so I wonder if they will relate to the things I am saying. Matt will never be able to disclose the terms and agreements. Matt is too much in a deep hole. His credibility will forever be lost with the Dominican people. It’s clear and simple, Matt’s materialistic ambitions are fullfilled by Skerrit and China to soften the blow against Skerrit. Once the people lose confidence in the mouth piece of the United Workers Party, we as Dominicans will be operating in what is called a capitalist communist state like China. Lennox Linton will fall into the same trap soon, watch it Dominicans! After it is done you will give more thumbs up to this article. The scholarships China gives to our students are geared into doing just that! In the study of Education, a cirruculum has what is called the hidden cirruculum. Part of the hidden cirruculum for our students studying in China is that they develop a communist mind. It is a subconscious behaviour that permeates the thinking of a university graduate of China. Their benefits from China will make it difficult to see the true colours of China and Skerrit. For any effective communist government to operate, it must have control of the press! It has to shut it’s opponents mouth. The shut your mouth bill in enacted in a different way hahaha Dominicans, history repeats itself. Allah says in the Quran, ‘Their hearts are alike.’

How does that affect us globally? Firstly, since we are a dependant state because our ‘mother’ country is China, we are still to this day in a trade deficit, we will continue to be given visa restrictions to other countries. Did you see what happened between Dominica and Canada? We could go to Canada without a visa! Chinese criminals who have close ties to it’s government will buy our passports. Don’t you think the Chinese governement want to keep influential criminals in it’s lands? Nah, once a chinese mafia can get into western countries to help build China economy, the chinese government will never refuse the offer! Do you know how many chinese hookers and heroin traffickers are in Afghanistan? They had to kick the taliban out to accomplish those objectives hahaha! Dominican passports will be sold to Chinese criminals thus England will soon impose visa restrictions on Dominica.

Dominicans should benefit from the Chinese in this way. Gain knowledge of manufacturing things so that Dominica can increase it’s exports to other countries thus Dominica can reduce it’s debts and become truly independent. Infrustructure is not enough! If China pulls off Dominica is finished! Let China pass on it’s knowledge of herbal medicine as an alternative to pharmaceutical drugs which has dangerous side effects to our people! Our people must learn the art of storing millions of gallons of water because after the war for oil it will be war for water. Let China pass on it’s knowledge of geothermal energy. Our island is ripe for that! It is time for a revolution in this country. Let China have a silk factory in Dominica and teach our young people how to make silk clothing and plant and import cotton so we can make our own clothing. We need to manufacture our own stuff including our medicine! We need to seriously upgrade our hospitals, we are in the 21st century! It is time to stop allowing Dominicans to spend millions of dollars for treatment in racist french countries. When will we wake up people? I heard talks about improving the Dominica State College, I hope soon we will offer the Bachelor, Masters and Phd so that we can spend that money in our country. Education is very expensive and tuitions in other countries are extremely high especially for foreign students! Our banks are suffering as a result of these unpaid debts, you see what has happened to AID bank? If we had our own institutions and enough jobs for our people this would have been reduced! Our manufacturing industry (secondary production) will create serious jobs for our people. Allah has blessed this land with many resources, will Chinese and Haitians own it? Our forefathers have fought hard for this land. It is time for the Caribs and Negroes to take back their country from corrupt rulers or work with them to build it.

“Well, my position is if the accusation is that the Prime Minister unlawfully and corruptly acquired a million dollars worth of assets on a salary of five thousand dollars and that he did so corruptly, I don’t know how that can be mediated. I mean if that is going to be the position of the Times and Matt Peltier, then it looks like mediation may not succeed. And that is something that may need to be settled in the court”.

    @Cummess: @Cummess:

Guys let’s not be too harsh on Matt. Gag orders places restrictions on both parties. But reliable sources seem to suggest that the PM was in no win situation and had to cave in. Matt is the victor. Given what has happened to Matt the PM will not sue Lenox. Matt will continue to pound the PM with “It is time to break the silence”.

It is ironic though that Tony Astaphan who claimed that this accusation could not be mediated outside the courtroom was not even at the mediation meeting. It only confirms that Tony woould have had a weak defense in court. It is now time for Skerrit to disclose to the public that he owns the villas. If he does he will be in violation of the IPO Act, and he could be in plenty trouble.

One has to understand the power to prove that the PM had done wrong was on Mr.Matt.

He was looking down the barrel of paying the court and libel fees to the PM. I take it that he walk away with a sorry letter which was accepted my the PM.

The PM had nothing to lose in this case. Anyone that understand court matter will know for a fact the the Plantiff (PM) has like to lose in a libel case but just court cost.

    November 9, 2010

All the allegations regarding PM Skerrritt, Susan Olde and US $400,000.00, SECRET controversial LAND DEALS in Trafalgar, RUBBISH BIN Scandal, Questionable contracts with National Projects, VILLAS and OWNERSHIP, ASSETS, ASSETS, ASSETS galore and APLENTY, and others too numerous to mention, are all proving to make sense. Those allegations cannot be defended or refuted by PM Skerritt and his cohorts.

They argue, make noise ghoulishly, rant and rave, threaten with LAW SUITS, but at the end of the day, when TIME REVEALS the TRUTH, they go with their tails between their legs. That MEDIATION BUSINESS is a CLASSIC Example. The matter of the VILLAS is another. PM Skerritt will not dare take Linton to court about OWNERSHIP of the VILLAS because of the fear that the TRUTH will COME OUT again through the COURT process.

PM Skeritt is making HISTORY in Dominican POLITICS as the WORSE POLITICIAN and LEADER, embroiled in so much ROWROW. LIES, SECRET DEALS, MANIPULATIONS, TRICKERY are the order of the day in our beautiful Dominica. PM Skerritt has surrounded himself with all kinds of protectors and defenders. Professionals (Lawyers, doctors, teachers, priests, pastors, civil servants), people in Institutions, the hierarchy of churches, our judicial system, as well as ordinary, poor people are BAMBOOZLED, FREAKED OUT, MANIPULATED and OVERTLY and COVERTLY supports all kinds of BAD GOVERNANCE, controversial SECRET DEALS, MISUSE of Public FUNDS, quick enrichment of a FEW persons especially in Public Office.

Many Dominicans have shamefully buried their heads, like the ostrich, in the STATUS QUO. No other leader in Dominica would escape so many times with such irresponsible and in many cases illegal behaviour. Dominicans, do you want to experience a life of DICTATORSHIP and further CORRUPTION in HIGH PLACES? SO BE IT.

Never read or heard of Haiti under those dictators like the DUVALIERS? Aren’t you hearing now the state of chaos MEXICO is facing? Don’t you all listen to World news? Don’t you all see everyday on TV what bad Governance, corruption, dictatorship is doing in people’s lives? Many have NO LOVE FOR THE YOUTH and CHILDREN TO COME. By their disturbing, unscrupulous actions many Dominicans are carving a LIVING HELL for honest, patriotic, hard-working, peaceful Dominicans and those to come. Hypocritical Prayers will not save anyone if Dominicans continue like that.

I am shocked with the knowledge that in 2007 the Prime Minister was only earning a meager monthy salary of $5000 (I can only hope it’s in US dollars and not XCD). I am certain that in the other Eastern Caribbean islands, $5000 is much less that what a Permanent Secretary and other Members of Parliament would receive as their montly income (less perquisites). I can only hope that his salary has increased significantly since or else his duties would seem to be on a voluntary basis.

I dare not comment on issues surrounding the value of his land ownership. Yes, I accept that accountability is paramont when you are a prominent public figure. On the other hand, isn’t his fixed assets are personal issue.

The PMon the other hand was the one who took him to court. By this silence I think we can all figure out that Matt was correct because Matt’s statement to this day is not retracted. Skeritt probably had to pay the man his lawyer fees AND help the man newspaper come back up. That’s not bribery or silencing anyone. MATT YOU HAVE NOTHING TO BE ASHAMED OF. @FORTUNE TELLER: Matt has debts.. alot of debts with a capital S. He needs money, he does not have money to pay Skerrit for damages. Can you just think for a moment please?

  75. Just asking questions
    November 9, 2010

The Times newspaper article of August 29, 2007 was correct in raising questions about $1 million worth of lands that the Prime Minister had acquired within a four-week period in 2005. Was the information true? It seems so. The Prime Minister Skerrit now agreed that the article was not malicious or defamatory. Skerritt could not allow the case to take its natural course because of fear that much would be revealed. LIES would be EXPOSED.

PM Skerritt and Matt Peltier have been advised not to disclose the terms and conditions of their agreement. Who would be defamed if the TERMS and CONDITIONS of the AGREEMENT are disclosed? The matter was a serious public concern since a politician in PUBLIC OFFICE, the Prime Minister, was implicated. So Why shouldn’t the PUBLIC not be informed about the TERMS and CONDITIONS of the AGREEMENT? Is there anything malicious about DISCLOSING the TERMS and CONDITIONS of the AGREEMENT to the PUBLIC? Would it be LIBELOUS to tell the PEOPLE? Is the information in the AGREEMENT a SECURITY THREAT?

When a young man steals a packet of Crix biscuit from the store, no information is withheld. When the poor, ordinary citizen commits a crime, no INFORMATION is held back. Everything is reported on radio,TV and newspapers. What is the TALK of FREEDOM of INFORMATION, the RIGHT to SEEK, ACCESS and RECEIVE INFORMATION, or accountability or TRANSPARENCY? What about talk of asking questions and seeking answers of our politicians and others in public office who do wrong things or to get clarification of issues in the public domain?

What a subtle way to shut Matt up and Matt has succumbed to the trickery. Should Matt file a COUNTER-SUIT for DEFAMATION of CHARACTER? When Matt consciously or unconsciously allows his voice to be stifled by any such AGREEMENT, he is allowing himself to be enslaved by the slave masters of the neo-colonial era. Was the TIMES newspaper right on the ball about how those lands were obtained? Matt has allowed his mouth to be PADLOCKED.

Dominicans try to see some light in that matter. Mediation was the only course of action for PM Skerritt, People would know through the courts if the land was paid for by Skerritt or that the courts would find that lies were made about the land owner giving the land to Skerritt as a gift. Those land assets were obtained through controversial means as the newspaper reported and PM Skerritt is now agreeing to that statement. Dominicans knew that something was wrong with the deals all along. Somebody was not speaking the truth. Somebody in HIGH OFFICE, as the newspaper reported possesses MILLION DOLLAR ASSETS. The ACCUSED, OUR PM, did not have the TESTICULAR FORTITUDE or BRAVE enough to FACE the COURTS to REFUTE the TIMES article.

Matt Peltier and PM Skerritt owe the Dominican people an explanation and must inform the Dominican public what really transpired in that matter. The full details must be revealed. Do not let people speculate about payment under the table. Who is paying Matt’s legal fees? Is it PM Skerritt? Is the PM paying any other fees to Matt? How much money is involved? Why didn’t PM Skerritt agree for the case to be argued and deliberated on in the courts? Dominicans are asking? What were the TERMS and CONDITIONS of that AGREEMENT? Those information must be REVEALED. WHY the SECRET? Tell us, WHAT IS THE SECRET?

Im very disappointed in the PM just signing this agreement without standing firm and going all the way to the court to prove to his people that he is a leader of his word. There is so much that can be deduced from the outcome of this matter. Why would Matt even agree for mediation? Why would Skerrit agree for mediation?. Who inititiated the mediation talks anyway? Is it the Master of the court, Skerrit or Matt?. In the end they both agreed to mediation. I recall that Thomson Fontaine wanted to mediate in the matter when it surfaced, but cannot recall now who was on radio saying – no way. No mediation, go to the court. Why didn’t Matt stand by his story an go all the way and prove his statements? Was it as a result of inadequate resources? Did Trevor Johnson honor his monthly pledge (until matter is settled) of $500.00 to the Matt Peltier legal fund?. That would have made it $18,000.00 (36 x $500.00). By the way was it TT dollars, USD or EC.

There are so many lessons to be learnt and it exposes our local media. Karmala who ran a competiting program with Matt at the time (The Hweng) also had her fair say on the “Million Dollar Asset- $5000.00 Salary”. Where is Kamal today? In the bosom of the ruling party – one may say. Matters of the heart story

Dominicans must learn to debate issues and not personalities. That issue more than any other served to divide the country in more ways than one. Matt Peltier himself suffered, financially and health wise. Our country is poorer for the article. Nothing came of it. Mr. Skerrit has his land. Matt no longer have a newspaper. We will not know what are the details of the arrangement settlement. I wonder what role Lennox played in that settlement. The law is the law. It is not the airwaves of any radio station that entertain any and every accusatory remark. When you go to court that is a horse not onlyof a different colour but a perplexing breed.

Matt what is the arrangement? Why are you silent? How did Skerrit arrive at silencing you the second most powerful media voice in the caribeban after lennox? Finally. What is the truth Matt? Rememebr sometime ago you utterd the following words on radio. “I love to be sued”. Remember?

If this is how stuff is done in Dominica, I shall not believe anything coming from the journalists or radio stations of Dominica anymore. All the journalists are full of lies and they are just like or worst than the Prime Minister. How can Matt after appealing to our sense of justice stoop so low as to receive payment from the Prime Minister to hush him? Magawsa! Matt you did not care about Dominica nor Dominicans —- it was so that to could lace your own pocket!

You compromised all the other journalist in Dominica, you are a sell out MAtt! You cried for JUSTICE and we joined in the cry —but you are JUDAS—-YOU BETRAYED THE TRUST OF THE DOMINICAN PEOPLE. TRAITOR! YOU MADE A MOCKERY OF OUR TRUST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NO MORE Q-95 FOR ME! I will not listen to one more Dominican journalist, YOU ALL ARE LIARS!

As a result of this, I have no confidence in Matt and will not even listen to any of his shows because I must conclude that his information CANNOT be trusted. On the other hand, the PM and his attorneys realized that the PM has been guilty and could not dear stand to defend himself at an unfair and political court such as the one we have in Dominica now. To me, the only loosers are the nationals of Dominica as the PM continues to do wrong things and knows he can always pay people like Matt to Shut up. Look out for Lenox to follow and then Q95, like he did to Crazy T and his station. These days money buys all things. Money bought Charles Savrin, Pas. BJ, Evangelist Peter R, Father Sharplis, Police Department and the entire Judicial system. So the PM has successfully shut the mouths of all those who could speak out and now he like a rat, feels free to continue on his mission, knowing that tha cats are all asleep. I’m sorry Dominica and Dominicans, we are in real trouble

the fact that a deal was struck means that Matt was not defaming the pm. He just didnt want the real evidence to come out in court. He save some face but he reinforced the belief that indeed he is bleeding the treasury.

this case was dead long ago? transparent, int, have the result on there last report 2008-9, the case was close by the pm ok.you all need to do your resurch`s and be imform? thank you.
    have a day.

  95. Very Disappointed
    November 9, 2010

So the issue of transparency – one that Matt always seems to trumpet on his radio chat show – is now suppressed in this ultimate decision?
How ironic and sad for Dominica at the same time.
I just hope that Lennox will not be brought for a few silver dollars as it seems (I’m just assuming folks) that Matt was.

    Hmmmmm Interesting
as it currently stands I have heard no public apologies, seen no retractions and everyone is tight lipped on the matter.

I don’t know for a fact who paid who, but anyone choosing to connect the dots can see the image it creates.

    November 9, 2010

    What a disgrace!!!!!!!!!!

So now the issue is over and no one is talking about it because a “secret” deal was made!!!! This is not serving the public interest as it should. The only interest this serves are that of the PM and the reporter!! What a WASTE!!!!!!!!!!

I came on this site about a month ago and predicted just that. I predicted that Matt was going to be silenced one way or another. The underlying questions are (1) Was Matt paid to shut up- If so then what a shame (2) Was Matt at fault or did he wrongfully accused the PM. If so then why not disclose the outcome in the interest of “ Transparency”. After all if our PM was wrongfully accused we the people need to know the facts so that we can start picking up the fallen /broken pieces and move on. (3) Was Matt’s accusation correct – If so why suppress the details . Matts credibility as a journalist becomes questionable. (3) Does Matt owe the D/can public an apology for either lying about the PM or has he failed as a journalist to stand behind the facts of his investigation. ( Don’t be surprised when Matt start singing a new song. Just like Crazy T).

In spite of our request for transparency the parties in mediation are not obligated to reveal the details of the proceedings. However we can only assume that our entire political, social and legal system is manipulated by the party in power. The St Vincent PM was confident in his case and took his matter to the court. One would assume that our PM would have done the same.

Good luck to a new friendship – Matt and Skerrit. Just like I predicted the outcome of this case between Matt and Skerrit so shall I predict that Dominica is heading towards unrest. The count down has begun; I can assure the vibes that is coming from my crystal ball is not pretty at all.

YOU FOOLISH PEOPLE READ THE FACTS, ON WHO LOST AND DO NOT WANT THE PEOPLE TO KNOW. WHO PAID ALL THE COSTS? FOOLS!

EVERYTHING IS POLITICS AND MORE POLITICS, NOT THE TRUTH BUT WHO YOU SUPPORT.

BE LIKE ME BE NON-ALIGNED AND YOU WILL SEE THEM ALL AS THEY ARE. CALL A SPADE A SPADE.

THERE IS PLENTY OF GOOD BEING DONE AND THE PM AND OTHERS DO A GOOD JOB OF ADVERTISING IT.

THERE MAY ALSO BE BAD, BECAUSE WE ARE ALL HUMANS AND I WELCOME LENNOX , ANGELO, MATT AND THE REST TO TELL ME. INFACT, I WILL EVEN CONTRIBUTE TO LENNOX LEGAL FUND IF HE ORGANISES ONE, BY AT LEAST! $100.00

WHEN THEY GO TO COURT I AM HAPPIER YET BECAUSE MORE TRUTH MAY COME OUT.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, I WANT THE COURT TO TAKE A HARD LOOK AT PERSONS WHO PERJURE THEMSELVES, BECAUSE SOMEBODY NEEDS TO GO TO JAIL FOR THAT AND SO RESPECT THE COURTS AND THE LAW

I LOVE MY COUNTRY AND WILLING TO GIVE MY LIFE IF NEEDS BE FOR IT.

    November 9, 2010

As long as Matt did not have to retract the statement or apologise and also did not have to pay lawyer fees then he won his case it was the PM who sued and i guess it was he was in a position to come to ask for an agreement even while he did not get what he wanted. What we can say on this out come is that THE PM WAS WAS NOT DEFAMED AND THE ARTICLE WAS TRUE… pm had the chance to have his ” good name ” cleared in court instead he ask for an amicable solution the question is: why?

I am disappointed that Matt would settle for this: keep his mouth shut. Matt has been advocating transparency, public disclosure and the public interest. Now, he has given Skerrit an easy victory and, in the political context of Dominica today, the ultimate victory of keeping your mouth shut on important issues of governance.

If we follow the commandments of the Father, we will respect others and will not try to slander and defame others and create confusion and strife. Those on the side who love to hear ugly and indulge in ugly, please turn from your ways. Gossip is not good and it plays on the ignorant minds. We the more intelligent ones should empower others who are not as smart as we are. They look up to us and anything we tell them they believe. We need to encourage others to stay away from gossip and if we have a concern then we can confront the person and talk about it. We should not spread lies and stories without having proof. We are quick to spread rumours and there are so many good things happenning around us that we do not talk about. What are we teaching the young persons – to indulge in gossip and we are not examples to them. We always seem to know what happenned ie we know other persons business more than the individuals themselves. It is so disheartening that sometimes one hears things about themselves which even they are surprised about. People stop the gossip, slander, lies, etc. Let us come togehter as one – love one another as the Father has loved us (He gave his son to die for our sins), Lift up one another, Pray for one another (We are each others keeper). Pray for our leaders so peace will reign in our land. Pray, Pray and stop putting curses on our land buy using our mouths idly (Out of our mouths we can spew life and death); Then our Father can open the windows of Heaven and bless our land and all of us.

I am happy that the parties have come to an agrement. Populace please take note and let us turn form our wicked ways.
