Talk show host and journalist Mathias ‘Mat’ Peltier and Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit are set to re-appear before a Master’s court on November 8, 2010 for mediation in a matter relating to an article published in a newspaper formerly owned by Peltier.
The article titled ‘$5,000 salary-$One Million Assets’ was posted on the front page of The Times on August 29, 2007. This publication had raised issue with what it said was $1 million worth of lands that the prime minister had acquired within a four-week period in 2005.
Prime Minister Skerrit had taken legal action against Times Publishing’s management after they refused to retract the story. Skerrit claimed the article was defamatory and malicious.
The parties appeared before a Master’s court this morning where the prime minister was to confirm whether or not he was interested in going forward with mediation with Peltier.

Mediation is a process where a neutral and independent person (a mediator) helps the parties in a dispute to reach their own solution. The parties usually agree who will be the mediator for their dispute, except in court-annexed mediation.
It is an alternative to having a Judge make a decision after a contested hearing between you and the other party. A Judge would give a decision after hearing the case (usually in OPEN COURT), establishing the evidence that is admissible (from any evidence that is inadmissible), and determining how the law applies to the case.
In contrast to court proceedings, which are open to the PUBLIC, the mediation process is PRIVATE and CONFIDENTIAL. Anything said or produced in evidence at a mediation session CANNOT be used in a later hearing, except in exceptional circumstances.

Peltier wrote an article without fact checking or presenting evidence/documents to support his position-he also did not seek comment from the person whom the article was based on.
The PM took him to court, accusing him/his paper of defamatory and malicious actions.
Now a Judge/Magistrate has to find a solution in favor or PM or Peltier.
If Peltier is to win, he must show that by writing the article, he did not engage defame or cause malice to the PM.
If The PM is to win, he has to prove that what he accused Peltier of indeed happened.
Only facts should prevail here….

I agree with Lycan. PM Skerrit is the lowest paid PM in the Caribbean. Matt has been trying to build a reputation on being controversial and being the quintessential “investigative reporter.” However, he is hardly objective and spend most of his energy, it seems, on investigating Skerrit. Most of his “investigation” has never been substantiated and makes for only good “veranda gossip.” His article in The Time is a perfect example. Skerrit should sue the daylight out of him.
If the PM is smart he will leave sleeping dogs lie. In any civil matter (non criminal) as in this case, proof beyond reasonable doubt is unnecessary. Preponderance of the evidence supporting Matt’s position is all that is required to substantiate his position. We all know that it is very easy to come by based on what has been going on. Also, there are lots of public records to support Matt’s case.
Matt should stand strong, and if needed all he has to do is ask for financial help with his legal problems. I am sure he would get more than he needed. I am one of those who would definitely donate a fairly large sum because the democracy of my country is at stake. This was a blatant attempt by the then young and inexperienced PM to silence the press after having been ill advised by those who were singing for their supper.
Skersker I know you reading this every chance you get and is not happy with the way Cowpoopoo is telling it like it is but take my advise and drop the matter. You have way too much to loose. As a leader you should know that only fools expect to wing every battle. Therefore you should pick your battles carefully instead of trying to fight everyone with limited ammunition.

Which mediator in Dominica want to get Skerrit against him. After sitting and listening for an hour or so the mediator will advise Matt and his lawyer to come to a soft and silent comprise. The mediator still needs his government income the day after. Isn’t that simple?

i recently done a life in the uk test and that book i studied taught me soooo much! one chapter touched a bit on journalists in the UK and it stated clearly that the news papers AND radios can somtimes make false claims against the government or can sometimes seem a bit biased….u dont see the members of parliament taking these journalists to court do you? its a news paper i mean they hold gossip pages on celebs all the time and its always the writers views on the celeb that is in there…it is up to you to believe it or not. i mean come ONN! dominica is a democratic country isnt it? or did it change overnight without us knowing…the prime minister is being tooo sensitive and too pompous if u ask me…not everyone will have good views on you and you should welcome (as the prime minister..) open questions that the public should know about. im getting sick and tired of him now…

The article was right to ask the question three years ago, and the same should be asked in all the major newspapers today. We now know the truth, and all concerned citizens of the land know who is the liar, the thief and the corrupt. There’s no need to mediate or to reconcile in a case that Mr. Skerrit brought on himself. The judge should rule that Mr. Skerrit pay the court cost and all related cost of the proceedings to include compensation for lost time to Mr Matthias “Mat” Peltier. The truth must be heard, prevail and set the victim FREE.
