Police investigate robbery in Portsmouth

No one was injured in a robbery at HHV Witchurch in Portsmouth on Thursday night, police have said.

According to latest reports, two masked men entered the establishment robbed the place and made good their escape with a quantity of cash; the amount has not been disclosed.

The latest incident follows a robbery at the McMillan Gas station in Roseau last month, in which three men had been remanded in custody.

A series of robberies have hit the island in recent times. Police Chief Cyril Carrette has acknowledged that the level of violence in Dominica has increased but said police are dealing with the matter.

Just want to express my Joy and happiness when I hear about a robbery. I won’t do it but somebody will no matter hw much police we have. Its just life. Maybe if more Dominicans were employed on the 3 major projects on island( state house, west coast road and the state college) we would see less crimes than we r seeing now.
Do u think the ppl that do these crimes do it cause they want to? No! They do it because they r faced with the pressures of life that leads ppl to do things crazy things.
I will continue to pray for them and the country as a whole. Jus don’t hurt inocent ppl and still from the poor. Still fr the rich and wealthy, they don’t think about the odinary ppl on the street that can’t provide for themselves. Rub them, rub them.

sorry folks but the force is seriously under staff….the human resource issue is a nightmare..the principal function is to prevent and protect..but you cannot prevent if there is not enough personnel..these current guys need rest, holidays, days off plus they have families..its the same tired guys over and over..get more people hence more patrol will arise and less deterant to crime will exist.

we are investigating the issue….stop investigating and get some equipment that would be helpful. All of us should have our printed when we go for a passport or any govenment ID cards. All criminal who enter the court house or jail should have their finger printed and save in a database…….If i know what i am talking about…..but that is going way too far now.

    • Papa Way
      November 21, 2011

…errr??? You’ve got to have detectives who in Dominica who actually take fingerprints??? No CSI Dominica going on here I’m afraid and it’s against civil liberties to hold and solicit data on individuals just for the hell of it. PLUS would you trust your data in their hands..when you haven’t done anything?

      Hmmm, I didn’t think so

      • Jayson
        November 22, 2011

I totally agree. Why should my finger prints be on a data base when i have committed no crime?

It’s almost like law enforcement would have a full database of prints to ‘choose’ from in the event that those prints are conveniently ‘needed’.

        That’s scarey…!

    November 20, 2011

You know what can really solve the problem, security cameras. If it was my establishment I would surely make sure I had one. Yes they were masked but you can make out a person’s frame, height and certain features even while they have a mask on. If that is done then police officers will know exactly who to target. You can’t leave everything up to the police officers. Entrepreneurs do your part; protect your interest!

        @ Papa Way

Your statement reminds of the following. Sometime ago I saw in a Readers Digest article with picture. A rich white man was eating and a small poor black boy was looking up at him. The rich man said: “Pull yourself by your bootstraps.” The little boy stated: “He is assuming I have a pair of bootstraps.” I thought the child’s response was amusing but true.
        Careful about using this statement.
Ganster or Gangster needs to find a stable job which will pay him a proper salary. If he does and remains in it, he could one day be a well-off person, a successful and prominent one too. It is worth a try. Perseverance wins in the long run.
I just read of entrepreneurs in DA. He could try his hand at that.

    • November 21, 2011

      @ gansters

You mean gangsters? Thou shalt steal. This is God’s command. It includes the Law of the land, namely DA. There is no excuse to steal from others and bring them grief and hardship. Consider the evil that you are contributing to and encouraging.
If you are old enough and out of school, you can find something to do. In addition, pray to God to assist you to show you the better way and to guide you. It is because some people sit back, moan and complain why they do nothing and some live a life of crime.
You are a DA citizen. One of your obligations is to build up Dominica and not break it down, destroy it and give it a bad name. News spread worldwide. Those who steal/criminals, this is exactly what they are doing to their fellow people and to their country. They can never be happy.
How patriotic are you and they? Learn from others who comment positively on this Website who have helped themselves by being productive, progressive and successful too.
Do not envy what others have. Those people work hard and made sacrifices for what they have.
Crime does not pay whatsoever. In the end criminals will pay for their crimes. The worst to come is when God will call them for their eternal judgment sooner or later. Think what it might be like and how you will feel when you stand unrepentant before Our Almighty Father and His Blessed Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, where your soul will end up for all eternity. I do not wish this for you or anyone else. Therefore pay heed and do something worthwhile and beneficial for your future and for your country.
Keep in mind that you have family, a mother, father, brothers and sisters of all and what they will think of you including their feelings of grief, should you find yourself in this type of trouble. May God bless and grace you with godly enlightenment.

    November 20, 2011

Here is an opportunity for someone to start their own security business. Train them in the use of firearms and have the business sector hire them. With the increase in business and population, it is almost impossible for the police to cover every sq ft. If we do not take those opportunities, the Hatians or Chinese will soon show us how it should be done…Ex- policemen!

You could probably plan a fundraising to purchase a book for them.
You should know that they are not harassing drivers. They are performing their jobs, ensuring that they drive safely, are obeying road regulations and that their vehicles are road worthy, etc. Why criticize them? Become a policeman yourself.

the critical Info that he needed to work with came from persons that he did not even acknowledge when he arrived on the scene.
he needs to go back to training school.

I have kept mentioning the need for the thousands of police officers to patrol the towns and villages of Dominica. Why employ them if they are only there to check seat belts, give parking tickets and eat and sleep at the police stations? They have vehicles, they have legs. They can patrol the streets like police officers do in every other country on the globe. It will not cos any more than it already costs since they are being paid a monthly salary. We do not need them at the polIce station, we need them in the streets? We only really need one person at the station, and that can be a trained secretary to take report and answer the phone then contact the police to investigate via radio if necessary, or file the report. Send the police officers on the street

the poilce needs to beef up thire patrol intellegence and be more vigilant on the island and around business although we dont know when these thiefs will strike .
Its time we consider installing CCTV in business houses and around around senitive area .

    • Me
      November 20, 2011

      Exactly thank you!

Um. I don’t know about the CCTV part though.

Anyways, if the police were really “dealing with the matter,” then they would have more police officers on patrol around the area, rather than them being wherever it is they are, because I hardly EVER see the police around! Sometimes I’ll go weeks and never see one truck or officer to go by.

This is especially true at night. Have two or three of them around patrolling the area, the area being anywhere that might be prone to some robbery, especially Whitchurch and banks and the gas stations!

      • forreal
        November 20, 2011

exactly really, these business places need to beef up their own security, spend some extra cash, its the christmas season,if they wait on the police, they fart.

      • Jespen
        November 20, 2011

And when you are robbed outside of your doorstep, you will be the first to say, ” Dominika hav so mutch polis wey dem?… All dey do iz patrol dem bouhgewa big biznis plase… dey need to start doin dere werk”

Truth is, we do not know, when, who, where, how the robbers are going to hit. Their business is to study how the security forces and business operators conduct their business and as such, plot out their chat.

Rather than to be patrolling on a TRUCK or on foot day and night without any real results, what the police needs to do now more than ever in order to truly arrest the crime situation, is to get into the practice of proactive intelligence led policing.

In my mind, being in a marked unit, while it importantly gives the community certain assurances, it also stands to benefit the criminal, as he is always aware of the police whereabouts, and knows when and where to strike next.

        Here’s some of the things that can be done;

        • More unmarked patrols
        • More plain clothed officers
        • Allow some officers to grow dreads, as gone are the days when all officers were required to be clean-shaven
        • Detail officers to hang out with the marijuana fellahz, in the ghetto
        • Recruit more informants in various sections of the community
        • Conduct more frequent stop searches around the islands. In that way, the message will be send across to the criminal that should he or she leave home with a weapon, it will be found.
        • The legislature needs to amend our laws and stiffen the penalties for certain offices. It is also further required that clear guidelines are set when dealing with certain offences, where neither the police, the magistrate nor the Judge is allowed to use his or her discretion in such matters.
        • Business owners need to invest more in surveillance equipment in order to quickly identify criminals.
        • and so on and so on.

Times have changed and we need to be proactive, rather than being reactive.
