Police under pressure to go after the ‘big boys’

This flashy Hummer was seized by the police following the arrest of Jowani Gage.

Almost two weeks after making arrests under the Financial Intelligence Unity (FIU) Act, officers of that department are said to be under tremendous pressure from some sections of the public, who want them to go after what they call “the big boys.”

Edgar Peltier of Pointe Michel and Jowani Gage of Shawford Estate were brought before the courts last week on money laundering charges, and are due back in court in October. Gage’s mother Arah Davis, a retired public servant was also arrested and charged under the Money Laundering Act. She is due back in court on Monday July 12, 2010.

“They need to go after the big guys…I am happy that they have started to clamp down on it but it must all be done in a proper and transparent manner not living out those in jacket and tie,” one person was heard to be saying.

On July 1, 2010 Davis had come to the court to secure bail for her son, but was detained outside the courthouse and taken into custody. While in police custody, she complained of not feeling well and was taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) where she was admitted.

On Sunday July 4, 2010 while still a patient at the PMH, Davis was granted bail by a Roseau magistrate.

I agree, they need to get rid of the dirty cops. I also think those wearing jacket and tie need to be looked at more closely. I do not know why Dominicans over seas have to be bragging about their accomplishments. Ultimately it is going to be enjoyed by someone that did not work hard for it.

All this bickering about material things are going to remain on this planet as soon as the breath leaves our body, so why even bother!

We should be more concerned with helping the young boys and young girls that are becoming delinquent and future drug addicts. What is Dominica becoming? I also think that some of the people that are making comments on the program should learn how to spell as well as try to make better sense of the message they trying to convey. Some of the comments just doesn’t make sense. And this is my piece for this evening.

@Fransico Telemaque- you are probably the biggest exaggerator/liar I have seen on this site! Your Corvette gets up to 300mph!! ha ha ha… A formula one car is not capable of such speeds let alone a road legal car. Further more I happen to know that Essex is one of the biggest shit holes in South East England. Strangly enough I served with the British Army in Germany and can also testify that Cuxhaven is again another migrant filled area of Germany, so I would hazard a guess that you are instead a boastful wanna be that is trying to impress my hardworking country men and women from Dominica.
Now go take a hard look in the mirror and feel disgusted!!! Now allow a sensible debate to continue without interjecting with your spurious information!

You always try to prove yourself to everyone on DNO. Everytime I read any of your comments, you always inject your experiences, academic credentials, and accomplishments in the most trevial debates. Just remember that it was you who began your petty assaults on comments that I posted.

I will say it again. If you believe that the vette is gold standard, you need to stop drinking all the American propaganda juice that are fed to you via American car magazines. I have driven both a vette and a Porsche Carrera GT on the Lausanne to Geneva autobahn, and I can tell you this much, the Carrera outperfomed the vette. The vette only positive was a sturdy crisp breaking. I need to take you to the autobahn. You cannot even drive a high performance car on American roads – with their 55 mph speed limit. How would you know how your vette performs when you cannot even drive it without getting a ticket.

You call yourself the king of Wesley? You are getting too far ahead of yourself.

Why is it that only one set of people are being looked at by this ‘ FIU ‘ ….. what about the over night millionairs, those who get tax cuts and duty free ……. I think the young man should be allowed to pay the due tax and keep his money. Its all well and good we are here talking about drugs and drug dealers, doing the right thing and making a choice to live the good life or the bad, but until there are 27 000 jobs to provide for the, almost 27 000 work force in d/ca, then a means has to be found.

Another thing, d/ca does not have a drug problem. The drugs don’t stay here, the drug trade actually creates income for the island. import duites and taxs ( i know he paid and arm and a leg to get the hummer to d/ca ) I know its sounds shady but there are a lot more people doing worse things in d/ca. FIU investigate all or none. And why is there not an Internal affiars dept to investigate the police …?

  25. @A Voice:

    Sorry, I am not boasting!

I am not boasting about anything I have, because no matter what we possess, it can be here today, and gone tomorrow, even human life; never mind material things.

What I do not like is to read the trash these people write to make themselves feel good.

All of what this guy has said about the Corvette is a bunch of balcony, and whereas I have one of the very best, though cheap in comparison to the best I could not let him getaway with what he has said.

That’s what its about, and not particularly to boast, I am a humble, and that’s why I have survived!

Number one the Corvette, is such a luxary in America, you don’t find them in every Chevrolet dealer showroom, and the dealers who are allowed to sell them may only obtained a matter of only five per year. Why GM does that, I have no idea.

Ask the man who may know why, since he knows so much the Corvette.

  26. @oh boy:

You know, some of us run our mouth off, and when caught in a trap, we try to be-little the other guy, I do not lie, and if you believe there no Maserati costing a million dollars, give me an E-mail address where I can send you a picture, of different makes of cars, costing over, a million dollars, as a matter of fact, starting, at four hundred thousand dollars.

You think you know, however, you have fallen short.

And as for this crap that you are talking about pseudo, or falls intellectualism you might apply that to yourself.

I do not have to prove anything to you, because I know just who I am!

You used to own what Corvette; Can’t negotiate what Roads, when we see Corvette, in the Daytona everyday.

Talking about European road, I lived in Essex England, and in Cuxhaven West Germany, so I can tell you about European Roads’

    You need to behave yourself!

    Francisco,

I would like to keep the debate to the topic at hand, but since you seem to latch on to anyone who responds on DNO, and spew pseudo-intellectual quacks, I find my myself compelled to respond to your sycophantic, and often unfounded diatribe. Your ego stretches too far ahead of you, mate. You seem to be very neolithic in you comments and thought process. This is a forum for adults – not peudo-intellectual high-schoolers. Yes, I know. I have read your academic credentials. They are not that impressive…….

Those are not fighting words, mate. I was merely stating that a vette would not be suitable for DA, because it it is not as nimble, and does not negotiate turns as crisply as other European automobiles. No matter what one may say about the vette (without going into a lengthy and boring details), it is still substandard compared to other high performance European automobiles. A Maserati does not cost a million dollars. $124K will give you a fine four-door sedan (Quattroporte) with the agility of a high performance sports car.

Just keep in mind that there are many Dominicans who have gone to the very top of the academic chain, and own very successful businesses in the Caribbean, Canada, the U.S., and Europe.

I am not here to display my academic credentials or business ventures ( as you always do). I just want you to know that there are many Dominicans who are power hitters throughout the world.

  31. @oh boy:

Now those are fighting words to me you see!

I do not know what type of Corvette you owned, but believe me the one that I own, I bought it brand new for a cash price of $106,000.00 dollars when they came out in 2007, in addition to the State luxury tax, of more than $10,000.00 is not a piece of crap.

And mine is a cheap one!

My maximum speed I can get out of that car is 300 Miles per hour, it excels from 0 to 100 miles per hour in less than 5 seconds. It contains a Z 51 system which affords me to shift from an ordinary sports car to something that I can compete with it on any race tract; the Daytona for example.

The transmission; I do not have to check for oil, because it is built to run for the life of the car without changing transmission fluids, I do have to check my engine oil every three thousand miles, or so, it has no jack or spare tire, because it was not built for that; one of the tires for that car cost more than a thousand dollars, it is one of the most reliable cars built in America.

And by the way, I get approximately 525 miles on a tank of gas, it is fully convertible, I assure you if you suggest that the American Corvette is a piece of crap, I am convinced you have never owned or driven one!

Unless you owned something below seventy ( $70,000.00 ) thousand dollars, and all that crap you talking about Maserati, and some of the cars that cost more than a million dollars; I do not know you but I can tell you are nothing more than a boaster, probable driving some piece of junk pretending you know so much about cars.

There are some people in America who would kill to drive a Corvette.

    Be quiet man!

There is nothing worng with living with hope!

Honestly, I don’t understand the comments like “there’s no such things as clean money” and “there will always be drugs”. People like yall need to sit your ..down because you have nothing to contribute.

When I was little in Dominica we didn’t have these problems. This drug biz in DA is a relatively new phenomena stemming from guys whose parents emigrate to the states thinking they’ll have a “better life” and their kids get involved in all kinds of..and get deported.

I say newly returned citizens – whose deportation is due to illegal activities – should not be allowed to immediately integrate into the population. Their … need to be quarantined and deprogrammed. Put them on Marie Galante and let them kick rocks for a minute. Whatever.

With more and more people leaving (and presumably a lot being sent back later) this might become an even bigger problem in the coming years. Better get a handle on it now… Let me be prime minister. I’d be pissin people off left and right. “Sorry your criminal child has to live in a cave for a year. Deal with it.”

Any form of money laundering derives from illegal activities, wether, it is from gambling, prostitution, drug dealings, thievery, or murder!

Whereas people also launder money to evade the payment of taxes, that falls in the category of stealing, and that’s also a crime.

In the countries where people enjoy the nice ride as you say, they do work hard for their ride in most cases, or shall I say 99% of the time.

If one operates a legitimate business, there is no need for money laundering.

No often intended, but what does your friend’s corvette have to do with the content of the story. We are talking about alledged illegal gains and activities. If your friend is legitimate, then he should have any worries. You cannot be nervous if your house is in order. Are you Dominican? If you are, then you are the small-minded one. This is a playground for grown-up, mate. We are a small island with strong conviction; and we want to make things right by weeding out the puppet masters. By the way, when you are talking about high performance cars, do not use the word Corvette. It is a poorly made American piece of crap. I know…I had one. Besides, it is not built to drive in DA. The Porsche 911 or Cayman are much sturdier, much more nimble, reliable; and would serve your friend best in DA. Do not come on here talking about things like private jet and corvettes…Some of us small-minded Dominicans (as you put it) fly GulfStream G650’s and drive maserati Quattroporte’s, and we are legit. Some of us on DNO are some heavy hitters, mate

  40. @king ghetto:

King Ghetto, if your friend has a new Corvette, and is taking it out of I suppose America, your friend cannot simply load that car, unto a ship without presenting a legitimate Bill of Sale, proving that he is the official owner, and that the car was not stolen.

And if he has the type like I have, something with the Z 51 system, that is a very expensive car, cost more than a hundred thousand dollars, and he would have to satisfy the shipping agents that the care is not stolen, before the ship it.

Mind you in the United States, and Canada, one cannot walk into a bank and simply say, I want to open an account, and it is done.

In order for a person to open a bank account here; you have to present three pieces of identification, and a pay-cheque stub, or some form of work identification, and also disclosed what’s your base per hour, and the name of your work-place

Then and only then they will open an account for you.

The same rules apply’s to preachers, doctors, teachers, judges, magistrates, lawyers, police officers, movie personalities, and government officials, even the president of the United States, and the king of Wesley too.

So, the probability of a drug dealer, or an unemployed person walking into a Bank with hundreds of thousands or millions dollars and make a deposit does not happen here!

Unlike Dominica, any punk, who never work in his life seems to be able to own all sorts of expensive goodies, and no questions as to where the resources which finance his material belongings came from; I was in Ohio not too long ago where I witness the DEA confiscated a Hummer from a guy who does not have a job, a jail bird who never work a single day of his life.

Those are pretty expensive motor vehicles, I can tell you, because my Son, Francisco E. Telemaque Jr, owns one of the same; Top of the line, it cost him seventy-five ($75,000.00) dollars bran new, his monthly payment on that is more than two thousand dollars pre month.

That same Hummer would cost approximately EC$198,750.00, and that would be without shipping cost, duty, and taxes on arrival in Dominica.

My question, is how much has this twenty-five year old Dominica guy earned since leaving school, what form of employment, he is involved in, or what type of business he operates that earn him that kind of money to purchase a Hummer that costly.

I know that they are no longer manufactured, and perhaps he purchased a used one, but even at that they are still very expensive.

So, to suggest that your friend must look out, for he might be scrutinized, or suspected may only happen if he is engaged in something illegal where he is leaving from, traveling to Dominica. And you can be assured if he is involved in anything illegal, the FBI, the DEA, and Interpol might already be on to him.

I’ll end this by saying we should be taking a closer look, at our civil servants, police officers, and the politicians, these are people when we suspect their there assets exceed their earning, they should be ask to give an account as to how they arrive at all that they own.

There was a time when that used to happen at home.

I remember in the 1950’s when a was a kid, the first Air Traffic controller bought a car, the then government, Labor Party, government ordered that the car confiscated, eventually the car was returned to him, after he proved how he was able to fiance the car, it turned out, his father held a big position on another island which I shall not disclosed, but finance the motor vehicle for his son.

” Doh say, I say eh.”

However, I do not see why we should not continue to investigate people when we discover that they are living above their means, especially when they do not owe a bank!

Let young man shine? What does that mean? Does it mean that young man should be allowed to shine even if his gains derived from illicit gains? Each one of us has a choice as to how we live. However, if you choose to live by getting involved in illegal activities, you must be willing to absorb the blow of the hammer when it strikes. What we need to do is cut the trees (the puppet masters), not prune the branches (the puppets). The puppets are lifeless without the puppet master. Bring them out.

Dominica is a small country. The police knows who are the major drug kingpins in every village. They need to tell the public why are they hibernating for so long. They need to go to some of the schools and ask the young boys/men who are their role models, and then they will see how far the decaying of society is….!!!!! Go after all of them!!! Police you know them.!!!

Like Poddles I disagree with your initial remarks. We need to attack the root not the branches. Why climb over the roots to cut the branches. Or even better poisson the roots and the branches will fall off.
With a population such as ours we don’t need extensive investigation or CSI D/ca to nail these vultures who prey on the weak and continuosly destroying the sick or addicted/Paros. In as much as we blame the police we must recognize that there are sincere policemen but (1) there are bad apples among the lot, (2) The police is directed by the politicians in government. Sometimes it becomes very difficult for the police to fully perform their duty.

The law enforcement unit and the office of attorney general should be exclusive of politicians (Tri apatheid system). The police should be able to investigate government officials at will not at the request of the PM. The office of attorney general should be put on the ballots every two years -no party politics.

They say small axe felt big tree, While I agree that the cops need to go after the big fishes they first need to flush them out. The only way to do that is to dismantle their network and the people they have working for them so themselves will have to take more risk. I think the police need to clamp down on the banks and business places forcing them to provide information of any and everbody unusual activites or face penalty and or imprisonment. They need to hire forensic accountants to investigate the businesses and give harsh punishment to the small fish to deter others. The police force need to have the officers gathering evidence to be difference from the officers investigating and they be different from those prosecuting so as to allow checks and balances in their system and reduce the possibilty of coruption. We have to start somewhere even if is with a small axe.
