Police warn of counterfeit money

Counterfeit $100 bills
Counterfeit $100 bills

The police are warning Dominicans that they should be on the lookout because of a spate of reported incidents of counterfeit notes on the island.

The notes are both in US and EC currencies.

Police PRO, Inspector John Carbon, said between January and April, 2014, 66 counterfeit notes of different denominations were reported to the police.

They range from $10 to $100 of both currencies.

“Let me remind persons that it is an offence to forge, utter, fraudulently convert and to possess fraudulent bank notes,” Carbon said. “Persons are asked to be vigilant especially business owners who on most occasions come into contact with these notes.”

Anyone with information on the circulation of counterfeit notes should call the Police Hint Line at 1-800-4468 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477.

The US should find a way of making their paper money difficult to copy. Canada had similar problems. Today, we have new $5, $10, $20 and $100 bills. The $1.00 and $2.00 bills have been eliminated for a $1 coin we call “Looney” and the $2 “Tooney” which they were named by, no doubt, the public, making our change purses heavier. What changes.
We also no longer use the penny. The items and change are rounded out to .05 cents. Customers may gain five cents or the store will gain it.
For goods and service taxes, the government has yet to round it. It is still thirteen cents. The stores still have not yet rounded out their items or all of them. Some still have them for, as an example $1.99, etc. but they are getting there to rounding them off to say $1.50, $2.00, etc.
The paper money is thin and they could get stuck in that, instead of giving one at a store, two could be given. It could also be cheap. If the owners/sales people are dishonest, they will not return the other one to the customer. A few have told me the extra money was given to them. Wished everyone was so honest.
They are difficult to copy into counterfeit money. I do know some will still try. They even counterfeit the transportation tokens and tickets and sell them to stores. Some get caught. What will these thieves not do?
I am extremely careful when handling this new money for the same purpose that I do not lose some money and to dishonest people.
All business places which deal with paying customers, should have a counterfeit detector. If they suspect the money is counterfeit, they should immediately telephone the police. Of course, not make it evident to those who try to pass them on.
These days we are slowing going paperless. I know a store which wants its customers who use its credit card to go paperless with a promise of a one-time (I suppose) $10.00 off. Some who mail bill statements no longer include envelopes since some people pay through the ATM. It is less expense and less work for them if customers go paperless. We lose; they gain as costs of their goods and services increase.
Many customers take advantage of this paperless system. It is convenient that they do not have to carry a lot of money with them. There are pros and cons to this practice, one way or the other.
Business owners in Dominica, you must pay attention and learn from certain overseas countries to make your transactions easier and to eliminate counterfeit money. Get a counterfeit detector machine.

I wonder if it only became an offense after a former finance minister in this same DLP administration shipped fraudulent money to Dominican students that were studying in Cuba? They lead and others simply follow. However, I strongly condemn this practice.

Some can never stick to the issue – the article and comment accordingly. They have a bad habit of always bringing politics into it which does not make their comment interesting. They probably have nothing else to state and try to fill a sentence or two.
