UPDATE: Masked men rob pharmacy at gun point

The hole in this main switch was caused by a bullet after one of the perps shot at it.

Three masked men with firearms robbed Bulls Eye Pharmacy employees on Friday night.

“It could have been ended badly. There could have been a serious blood bath,” the pharmacy’s owner Val Cuffy said.

At about 7 p.m. Cuffy and his wife were upstairs of the building when they heard a loud bang coming from downstairs. He said he thought the noise was caused by the storeroom gate. However it sounded unusual and he and his wife went to see what happened.

“They shot the main switch and of course we lost power … They point their guns at my staff and that really created a traumatic experience for them,” Cuffy recalled.

While he is reviewing his loss,  Cuffy said the robbers took off with at least $2,000 from the Goodwill pharmacy.

Though it was dark inside, Cuffy recalled two of the perpetrators were average height, and the other was tall. He said he will look at the security camera footage to assist during the investigation. A report was made to the police on the same night of the incident, and police have visited the scene of the crime.

“In our discussions with police those three masked men tried to take over a gas station last night…” he added.

The pharmacy’s employees were taken to the hospital after the robbery. One was treated for elevated blood pressure.

    @ if

just blame everybody except those resposible, give these wicked and malicious young men an excuse to get a gun and shoot up a place and rob somebody, because the gov’t cannot run the country…

Ps dominica ‘ghettos’ are a paradise compared to those in jamaica….and the way i see it, people who live in the ‘ghetto’ have no problem with staying there, cause it seems like they make NO EFFORT to leave. DO SOMETHING POSITIVE, LEAVE THE GUNS & THE VIOLENCE IN THE TV SCREENS

  3. July 26, 2010

THEY NEED A PUBLIC PLACE TO DISPLAY THESE CRIMINALS AFTER THEY ARE CAUGHT. i AGREE WITH YOU 100% THEY SHOULD BE FLOGGED AND STONED.
WE CANNOT ALLOW THESE CRIMINALS TO DICTATE OUR LIVES, SOON WE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO WALK DOWN THE STREETS WITHOUT A BODY GUARD.

NO WONDER DOMINICA IS GOING TO HELL IN A HAND BASKET! WITH SOMEONE LIKE YOU AT THE HELM WE WILL ALL PERISH.

  5. July 26, 2010

I will continue to bring up this point. How comes the Haitains are making it in Da and the natives can”t? Our people have become to lazy and complacent. They expect everyone else to work and take care of them while they remain on permanent vacation. Stop blaming the Government for everthing that goes wrong in your lives. Skerrit did not create the recession, it is worldwide in case you have’nt noticed.

Time to get off your butts and do something productive instead of being destructive.

    Mr. Cuffy

In an effort to have these criminals apprehended can you please post the video of the assailants on youtube, or have DNO place a link for us to access. Someone will most definitely be able to recognize at least one of the criminals, if not by face (for they were masked) but by mannerism.

    Just an idea….

To the people that keep stating that it is somehow government’s fault why these perps choose to do what they did I call you ignorant. In no way can YOU blame government for this. Are you perhaps implying that because someone is poor that they should resort to stealing? Is hard work and deligence a thing of the past? Or are you saying that this economic hardship that is being faced right now only happens here and no where else?

Yes there is poverty and jobs are scarce. but is that really enough justification to steal and endanger human beings? I was robbed once by a masked man with a gun so i know the way that these people are feeling and stating that its GOVERNMENT’S fault doesnt console the victims it just adds unneccessary worries. The blame for all this nonsense should be laid on the 3 masked men who obviously had nothing better to do than perform unsavory acts. GET A DAMN JOB OR GO AND PLANT FIG, BEND YOUR DAMN BACKS AND TOIL!!!

@ 19 and Fed Up..You are sounding so ignorant and stupid by your pronouncement that poverty and politics does not engender crime that my advice to you is just to read the blogs but do not respond, cause you have nothing positive to contribute.Do you know anything about the ghettos in Jamaica? Poverty, ignorance and Politics must not be slighted with.
Our biggest problem in DA is that we have no leadership in government so it is permeating to and through the society. No law,no constitution seem to be able to stop some of these guys.
The lesson for us is when arrogant leaders want to spoil a country, we should be quick to condemn them because they put all of us at risk…..!!!

you should really filter out the ignorance being posted as comments on your news items. Politics and poverty have very little to with crimes, PERIOD! Because it’s the same young people who opt to drop out of an educational establishment, where they could have been paying next to NOTHING where school fees are concerned, to smoke weed and deal drugs….it seems that they take pride in not trying to leave the so-called “ghettos” but roll around in it. The idol rap artists talk about working hard to leave the ghetto yet all the get from it is smoke weed a kill a n***a da step to you. @ ALL IGNORANT DOMINICANS the gov’t is not GOD, it’s YOU the people that run the country…the gov’t watches over an try to make it easier or better, so stop that foolishniss of asking for the gov’t to intervene or els we will (although we already are) go nowhere but down as a nation. This BS needs to stop we need to GET UP OFF OUR A**ES and do things for our D@MN selves, it was never meant to be easy, it’s the journey to what we want that makes us who we are.

FYI it’s ignorance like this that run the youth out of Dominica….cause all they hear is negative…stop this s*** and man up!

I concur, the next level may not be upward motion, but I see us spiralling out of control.

    Remember Dr. Savarin’s words….. its coming….
And When you DUMBINICANS all want to shut out the people who are cautioning you – saying they are talking nonsense, well, here is the nonsense.

Don’t Expect it to get better….. it s gonna get MUCH WORSE.

And DLP, the Minister of SECURITY and all the MONEY they PUT in the BUDGET to protect US Ain’t going to do JACK SHIT!

WE have no sense of values, morale at an all time low, we praise the criminal,s protect them, hail the evil doers, chastise those who speak against bad behavior, crime, and such activity…….
Benhanzin… time to step up, and all the other legal fraternity members, DPP, magistrates ought to step up their game, sit around the table and discuss the plan forward, talk about implementing harshest of measures…. in other words, get off your FAT ARSES and Do SUMTING that is going to make a POSITIVE change in our society.

This administration, the police, the DPP, the legal system, is full of bull doo doo, and it seems like teh mercenary Dominicans will have to take matter into thier own hands.

How many years we sit by and watch the same thing develop in neighboring islands, and we did NOTHING to prevent it, even though the signs were in-front our eyes. WE are the DUMBEST bunch of islanders I have ever come across, we sit around and wait for it to happen to us , before we deal with it. We ought to be sooooo ashamed of where we the people have brough this island to.

No matter what you say, Dominica is NO better that it was 10 years ago, because no amount of road networks, new buildings are gonna help this economy move, we do not act when we should, crime is growing, and nothing is being done about it, and we still have NO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT that’s gonna get people into this country. Without that the hotels will suffer, as will all other parts of our country, Agriculture—- what agriculture????……WHAT DOES EVERYONE ESLE HAVE THAT WE DON’T…. AN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

The damage shown in the picture is not caused by a bullet but looks more like a close up blast from a shotgun. Dreadful and traumatic experience all the same and my sympathies go to the victims. This looks/sounds like a planned job and the perpetrators would have studied the place beforehand. Hope Val has recordings of visitors to his store of, lets say the previous two weeks that may fit the description of this vermin.

My comment is that we are quick to assume that its dominicans who are responsible for ALL crimes done in dominica : and you do not hesitate to report misdemeanors of dominicans living overseas…

I simply suggested that with the ongoing influx of thousands of foreign nationals who are not all saints and angels – the type of weaponry and the modus operandi -shoot the mains?- the foreign inhabitants cannot be considered to be ABOVE SUSPICION . .

This time of crime has been goin on for years , the police i THINK TRY THEIR BEST TO FIND THESE CRIMINALS BUT NEVER SUCESSFUL…. IT IS TIME THE POLICE BECOME BETTER EQUIP TO DEAL WITH THESE TYPE OF CRIME… IN THE COUNRTY I NOW LIVE THE POLICE ALWAYS FIND THEM WHEREVER THEY ARE . WE NEED MORE SECURITY CAMAERAS IN BUSINESS PLACES, SECURITY BOTTONS LINK TO THE POLICE STATIONS, TRAINING FRO POLICE OFFICES TO DEAL WITH THESE TYPES OF CRIMES, CRIME WATCH A RE ENACTMENT OF THE INCIDENCE TO SEE IF THE PUBLIC CAN HELP IN GIVINTHE POLICE INTELLEGENCE ON THE WHREABOUT OF THESE CRIMINALS.

These type of criminal must be dealt with harshly and in the public square with floggings with cat-o -nine tails so it becomes a specific and general deterrent! If Dominica doesn’t get a grip on this, we can kiss the” tall is her body” image goodbye!

Let me begin by making a catagoric statement that i am vehemently opposed to any evidence of theft or robery,be it in government by our leaders, or by any other citizen of my country.I firmly believe in the bibical tenet “by the sweat of thy brow thou shall eat bread”.The bread may not be bountiful, but indeed it is gratifying..
Let me further add that we are slowly but surely losing the stranglehold on the country in so far as morals, leadership, standards, rectitude are concerned. The main reason is petty political affiliation which has shrouded our faces, eyes, mind, heart with a colour (red, blue, yellow, green),to such an extent that we call wrong right, and right wrong..My greatest preoccupation is that we will wake up one day and find that Dominica is so far gone that we can’t reverse the mess that we are helping to unravel in our own eyes..
Sorry for the politicians or their cronies,i do not believe the level of crime and criminal activities are as a result of development, because i would not hesitate to ask for the development..The development is almost imperceptible..maybe i could more agree that many of the crimes committed are as a result of poverty and the desire for material things..
I blame those who have eyes to see and they see not, those who have the intelligence to discern but keep silent ( because they are part of the raping or DA), I blame those who have influence, but say nothing..A case in point, have we asked any questions of our leaders on the vast amount of wealth they have accumulated on their small salary? Why do we bash and villify and hurl diatribes at those whose moral rectitude force them to ask these questions? What kind of Dominica are we handing over to our children?
I feel sorry for my friend Val Cuffy and want the culprits to be arrested. But remember people, leaders lead and followers follow..If leadership is corrupt, followers (plenty) will be corrupt.
Have we asked ourselves with all these gun associated crimes, how many surgical searches have the police carried out at the homes of suspected illegal gun holders?Have we asked ourselves why so many of our institutions are ‘moo moo” re making public condemnation of all sorts of crime and bobol in society? Have we asked ourselves why some citizens are above the law and some are not?
I love Dominica, but alas unless we remove the wool over our eyes there are solidly perverse indicators that it’s not long before we lose it..

  39. Countryman
    July 25, 2010

It may be sad but I think I would be glad if the system would begin public flogging in the country. Criminals should have a number and no longer will they run to the lawyers for protection. The lawyer who is their refuge, make him/her the executioner. Flog 20 everyday. Even if the criminal scream and cry don’t worry about them cause the people they hurt was also crying too. Right now the state prison is overflowing so we should start from tomorrow. Flog them on the bay front every Saturdays so that others can see. Make the human right activist the commander to enforce the punishment. It is time that we stand on our feet and decide our destiny. The law says don’t kill but the criminals are doing it. So we go by the rule, “do unto others as u would have them do unto you”. Isn’t that fair enough? Give them one chance to appeal and when the appeal is exhausted send them to get their flogging or the hang man knot. To long citizen are being terrorized by these young generations of criminals. The only that one might or should be pardoned is those who seriously reacted to self defense. Critics may say this is inhumane but too much of life going down the gutter. That human right vibes need to take into consideration of the life of the victim the criminal had rights to. They terrorize and take people life unnecessary so they should be given no mercy don’t care who is who. If we take this simple public flogging we go see how the crime rate will go down low. BTW the prisoners should be spectators sitting or standing in the front row as spectators. Don’t expect people to like my views but this do work. In some countries people are being stoned to death for adultery, for breaking simple rules such as drinking alcohol so why don’t we deal with the hard core criminal.

    Lets heal the country.

    July 25, 2010

If you steal you wil be stolen from!!!!!!!!!!! Not condoning the act of robbery, but it’s just the nature of the beast, universal laws, laws of nature set in stone!!! You cannot change the rule by your existence. You can bet on a few things in life: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. No matter at what level you steal from, it comes back to you!!!! IT”S THE LAW MAN IT’S THE LAW. Some of us want to do things in the closet at high levels and play big in society . At whose expense? hahaha. I am NOT condoning CRIME, I never will. BUT! Eventually all our chickens come home to roost. We should all be HONEST at ALL LEVELS. Some of us have to learn allof us have to eat. There is NO reason why you alone want to live. Now the sad thing there always is collateral damage like those poor traumatized workers, They will live though, they will live. Just Plain Talk No BS!

We need to recruit more police to patrol (mobile and foot, plain clothes and uniforms) we are now in a country where almost every young boy can get their hands on high speed guns, but our police patrol with a piece of stick.

Lets just say two constables were on uniform patrol in the area and saw what was going on. They could only call for back up, which is what one expect a civillian could do. that is not what we need today we need our police armed to protect us.

From my understanding there are many police officers who apply for license to carry their private firearms and they dont approve the applications, but we hear of incident where former commissioner of police son shooting people with licensed firearm oh boy.

@shy: Dominica has always had a beggar government; from colonial days when Baron was Chief Minister, his breaking news after a trip abroad was what he got for Dominica; whether that meant a popcorn machine or candy fluff dispenser for his store at Cork & Old streets. Since Independence, even the charismatic Patrick John, the formidable Dame Eugenia Charles (pocket book in one hand and palm outstretched on the other) thought they no longer had to beg their colonial master(England) for financial shoring; they had full and unobstrusive licence to solicit aid internationally.

Now, the Prime Minister is head of the country and has a cabinet to advise him regarding the needs of the people; further, they have the obligation to inform him of any potential for establishing business and employment opportunities for the nation. It is my opinion that when such contributions are lacking, the alternative becomes the rice bowl.

But we can’t expect all initiatives, ideas and ventures to be supported or implemented by government. Our poverty is of our own making. First of all, government does not impoverish people – people allow themselves to be impoverished by the burden of excessive government.

We claim to be full of resources. I do not see it. Nevertheless, Dominicans have fabricated the idea of the existence of 365 rivers in our “beautiful” country.Well, exploit that claim. No one has thought of populating the streams with trout and creating a new sporting event while producing another food source. Can we introduce pheasants and peahens into the bountiful forests for sport hunting and food?

We claim to have 365 rivers and no one suggests introduction of micro-hydro power for the different villages so that islandwide electrification would no longer be centralised. 365 rivers – and no water slides for tourists to entertain their children when visiting

We insist on growing bananas. Has anyone thought of growing bananas without fertiliser and use the fruit to produce ethanol, make commercial cloth from the stock and marketable booze from the ripe fruit? These are only a few of the many micro industries that the private individual can investigate, get seed money for research and development. Stop being political about trivialities.

If the increase in crime is due to development, I can assure you that development is not economic – probably social – much uncontrollable crime is caused by an alarming disparity between rich and poor. On the other hand, if the spike in crime is really caused by economic growth, why does it matter that it was a result of relentless begging? All the wealthy nations of Europe, got their wealth by economic pillage – downright theft and genocide. Is that nobler than passing the rice bowl around?

I know that development brings crime, but it is still based on the same concept… they want free things they do not work for.. these guys can be creative and create their own income generation but they rather to steal and rub and most of them their parent or relatives or girlfriends know who they are..

  59. against all kinds of robbery
    July 24, 2010

@Sign of Trouble: Any kind of robbery is robbery is robbery. Robbery by masked men or masked robbery is robbery. Robbery by politicians in public office or by persons in private office is robbery. Robbery of poor tax payers money for amassing personal wealth, pyramid schemes, money laundering, dirty money, as well as using money from the treasury for controversial purchase of rubbish bins or fertilizer without the taxpayers knowing is robbery. Many Dominicans condone some kinds of robbery but denounce other kinds. It is hypocritical to shed crocodile tears now. Many are to be blamed for the present state of affairs. Professionals, church leaders, intellectuals, ordinary poor people have to carry some blame for remaining silent for too long when those crimes happen. It is said that silence is consent. The robbers of all walks of life must be brought to justice and punished accordingly. Otherwise all sorts of robbers once they realize that robbing is condoned and accepted ih some quarters, expect more and more. Ordinary people of the poorer class, you should always denounce robbery. When the elite class do it, politicians, and those in authority and mask the robbing say it is wrong and do not support it for purely partisan reasons or because the perpetrators are your friends. In Dominica, even when investigations reveal the crime has been committed by the Gros Bourgs, evidence is forthcoming, the robbers are caught red-handed and the robbery cannot be refuted, some people find it hard to believe and blindly make all kinds of excuses for the robbers So what do you all expect. The ordinary guys will do it also, and try a ting. The robbers maybe tell themselves that no constitution, no law, no police could prevent them from robbing. Those kind of attitudes and irresponsible criminal behaviour is taking root in our beautiful country and nobody will escape the ravages of those robbers. So my people lets begin to denounce all kinds of robbery, speak out strongly and write consistently against all kinds of robbery from now on to save Dominica.

Shy !This only the tip of the bananaberg we have not ice/snow here so…. see what his partner trying now in caracas trying to close down or nationalize one of the largest companies with unions and has trouble doing so as venezuelans know the deal.Sooner or later Chavez will have less cash to put in suitcases for our boy to run the red clinic so expect much more crime kidnapping and asking for big box. we have only just began no this hymn from church played and sang at funerals?
Soon we wil be like Mexican and Columbians peasants buring their dead in codfish boxes cause the cost of a decent coffin will be beyond reach as the demand out strips supply. The red clinic reminds one of the drug cartel payout centers of Columbia and Mexico. In Mexico just yesterday 38 charred bodies were dug out of a mass grave somewhere in Mexico. It was said to be drug related bullets were found inthe bodies.

Sorry Val, these criminals should be brought to justice – bring them before the magistrate all criminals are afraid of.

The hand outs are finished so this is the move to the next level.

Dominicans remove the covers from your eyes and see things for what they are.

No one is immune to crime and its effects. God help us.!!

  69. July 24, 2010

Exactly my sentiments. With such a small population these manifestations of petty crime The gigantic are given lip service and are not followed up on.
Crime is everywhere and small events like these are of little of no significance to the larger scheme of things , the bigger picture. Here you are presenting such trivialites as news on a website for more so folk in the diaspora.Recently there was the issue of money laundering it was mentioned but there was no follow up. We have to learn from the talkshows that high ups are involved as if that in itself is new. It took the P.M’s brother to openly vent the issue of the drug trade and it’s tentacles reaching every facet of our economic and social spheres. There has been talk of even reaching our religious organizations( large collect donations to the clergy and pastors) One pastor received a substancial birthday bash and was brazen enough to state on national radio, no one can tell the church (his) how to reward and take care of their pastor.
We have the cases of bobol in Government and opposition alike the opposition. Ministers whose salaries just don’t match their earthly possessions. EVERYONE KNOWS OR HAVE HEARD OF THE LAND DEALS AND THE $ 5000. 00 SALARY The villas ,the speed boat etc, yet we go on to cast a blind eye as many receive/received/ are receiving from the red clinic which comes from Chinese underhand deals, venezuelan bread crumbs. Once we are taken care of it’s not our business what the heads receives or does. Isn’t this robbery or grand theft too? Many are not aware of the bigger picture but those of us who know must see it our civic duty to inform and educate our fellow nationals. Venezuean and Chinese motives in the region . First the ordinary folk are unawear of the issue of Bird island and the oil deposits which would subsequently belong to DA or any other island within the 200 miles zone according to the law of the sea established docmunentations. By handing out gifts etc by Jugo Chavez to Skerrit he can maintain their bulling grip on Bird island in a clandestine manner. similar to the clergy and pastors who rape our children and because they are the leaders in the church no one dear challenge them? Then we have the drug trade issue there are too many Venezuelans fisher men, non fishermen and fishers of men in our waters and land. When caught in their drug trade are defended by our establishment. These are the far larger (real)crimes where more complexity occurs( to quote our legal defenders)” by the operations of law.” The masked men needed some $ for what ever purpose and selected Bull”s Eye it could have been a home invasion .If they really wanted some serious cash like the cuts received by our leaders in kickbacks amounts in the $100 000.00 on each contract to build their MODEST $ 400,000.00 EC house which turned out to be more like the equivalent in US $ or purchase a few villas or purchase a speed boat or buy a few plots o f land ej, they would not have chosen bulls eye dispensary! Give me a break with that breaking news.
We are told that the individual parts are more important than the whole, ya right! Let’s fight petty crime they urge us. What a bout the whole and white, Red or Blue shirt colour crimes? The big crimes?? Catholics go to mass on saturdays and other days all the novenas way of the cross etc. The other denominations go even more often and ask the most high to deliver them from evil. They should begin to ask for deliverence from the greater evils like corruption of our leaders.
    Do I hear an amen?

Almost in the middle of town, you can imagine how criminal activity is becoming blatently in our faces now..I blame the leadership of the country and the court for this..Too many of these criminals, commit crime and do not recieve sentences consistent with the crime they have committed.
Even murderers, kill today and walk free tomorrow…HOLD ON STRONG YOUNG BULL…HOPE THE CULPRIT(S) IS/ ARE CAPTURED..

I went there some time ago, and I actually warned the young lady there.
I knew they would be a target.
I found them to be lacking vigilance, security and adequate staff.
In these times business houses have to be forward thinking, to TRY to curb crime.
Having said that, even after many precautions, the bad guys still prevail.
    Hope no one was hurt.

Chuck it up to development. The administration & society can respond to this ever rising tide of crime as a yardstick of development. This one of the markers of development upwards downwards or hey even sideways.Over the last 7 yrs or so we have seen the spiking of these unusal to DA phenomena on the commonwealth of DA Beheadings as if we wereTaliban fighters .Remember Francess Pierre,Dorival. Also on the rise are shootings, stabbing theft etc.We have also graduated to money laundering, 10% kickbacks when contracts are signed. We see villas with fictious owners, land purchases from dead former owners, relavant taxes not paid initially ,only to be done in retrospect and classified as oversight by lawyers after the fact .Corruption in and by Gov’t ,opposition and independent groups alike. The influx of ectopic ,new arrivals amongst other things. The list like the beat goes on and it’s long.Who can argue we are not developing and enroute to the next level?Comrade Warrington, let’s declare war on them with the pen.
