Double-murder accused Sarah Lynn Augustine is still a patient in the psychiatric ward of the Princess Margaret Hospital.
Police spokesman Claude Weekes said in a recent interview that he has not received any reports of her transfer since the referral by a magistrate on the day she was charged.
Augustine, who is in her early 20s, was charged on September 28, with the murder of her two children, five-year-old Rachael Vigilant and two-month-old Sophia Vigilant, at their Mahaut home in the wee hours of Sept. 16, 2010.
The children were allegedly killed with a knife.
Since her arrest the young mother has been under the supervision of both law enforcement and medical officials.
To date there are looming speculations of her suffering from postpartum depression, possibly related to the birth of her youngest daughter.
This morning, the QFM radio program ‘The Hot Seat’ announced that it would dedicate a significant portion of its 10 am segment to the subject of postpartum depression.
The program promises to highlight the symptoms of the psychological disorder and feature real stories from mothers who have experienced this and has survived it, with their children in tact, to tell of their experiences.
Augustine was also seen at her children’s burial in Delices in the company of a psychiatrist, police officers, and hospital staff.
I honestly think that there is another side to this story….because, no matter how mad a mother may be, she would never just decide to kill her two children in their sleep. Its impossible to imagine. The children were children of God, But isn’t she a child of God too? What could possibly go wrong, that she would just suddenly get up and kill her two children?? People think of it. It makes no sense. I Hope they allow her to testify, if not, it Might just cause her to actually go Mad.

Obserd! she carried these two angels inside of her for nine months and went through an episode of pain to get them out. If it was her intention to kill them she would have had an abortion. All I can say is that the girl knows how to do a killer ‘Smokey Eye’ (make-up wise)….. All joking aside it is a pity she was not able to reach out and get help for her post partum depression or whatever mental deficiency that caused her to act so impulsively. We can sit here and cast our ‘cool wash’ from the outside but none of us really know the emotional turmoil that took place in the young lady’s head preceding her impulsive and tragic actions.
We neglect to realize that depression, manic depression, and bi-polar disorders are very real phenomena and if untreated, could result in the exact kind of instances that took place in this situation. These disorders are to be treated as an illness just like high blood pressure or diabetes.
Depression related illnesses happen mainly when the brain (usually because of heredity, or extreme trauma or stress) looses the ability to secrete and regulate the levels of the chemicals Serotonin, Melatonin, and Nor Epinephrine. These naturally occurring brain chemicals allow the brain to stabilize one’s mood and allow person feelings of well being and balance. In other countries, this type of disorder is treated with a class of chemicals called ‘Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors’ which prevent the brain from quickly reabsorbing endorphin chemicals like Serotonin and Melatonin and keeping them in the right balance thus allowing one’s mood to stabilize and life to go on as normal.
Granted, this young lady may very well have been triggered by the actions of her boyfriend. I am the last to argue that this could not possibly have been a trigger to what took place. However; human beings are built with a natural instinct which causes them protect and preserve the lives of self and loved ones such as family and children. In order for this young lady to get to a point where that instinct was suppressed enough to allow her to commit such an act is a really dark place and we should not stand in judgment of her since there is no way we could account for her state of mind or speculate on what exactly she was thinking/feeling at that point.
May her children rest in peace and may she come out of this fog long enough to realize what her lack of seeking help for her situation has caused. If she is in altered mental state and has not yet faced the realty of what has taken place then throwing her in a jail cell will do nothing for the rehabilitation of her mind or repayment of her debt to society. She was taken to the funeral in an attempt to shock her into the reality of what had actually occurred. I am not aware of if that action yielded the desired result/effect. If her doctor feels that he has more work to do on stabilizing her brain activity before she can face what is before her then we should give him our support and encouragement for doing what is prudent in a horrible situation.
Those of you who stand in judgment of this young lady, may you never experience the type of mental anguish that could drive someone to commit such an atrocity against themselves, their children, society and god above. Try to be a support for those around you and try to build each other up with a kind word as opposed to some of the things you hide behind fake names and say. Our attitude in Dominica toward mental illness is what has caused this case to fester in the way that it has and if we do not seek first to understand as opposed to wanting our opinions to be understood by others, we will create many more situations of this nature in out own small society. Listen then, if you have ears.

I do feel sorry for the woman. I am unable to comprehend that she murdered her two daughters. I saw their pictures on DNO Website. They were such beautiful children. It is so sad. Anyway, they are innocent children and are definitely in Heaven, in the loving and protecting arms of Our Lord Jesus Christ. They are angels and are safe for all eternity.
Did she not love her children? Surely, one who sincerely loves and her children, would not do such a thing. She murdered them while they were sleeping so that they could not see her and cry. I heard that she is a woman-scorned.
Why did she not speak to a relative or friend and ask them to take care of the children? Or speak to the Welfare authorities in Dominica. She would have received a lot of help in Dominica.
If she is crazy or proved to be crazy, she should be sent to the mental institution. If she gets better, she should be tried for murder. This is the Law in Canada. Although some mothers could be acquitted ot such murders.
Hopefully the Dominican Law authorities will handle this case appropriately. She will need counseling and much of it. Yes! She will have to leave with this for the rest of her life. It will not be easy for her.
Most people who are suffering from severe depression, whatever it’s type become suicidal. Those people want to end the mental suffering that they cannot explain to others, no matter how professional; so they believe the only solution is to take their own lives. Those people might want their loved ones to die with them, but not what happened in the case of Sarah Lynn Augustine.
I have heard of a mother with PPD who committed suicide. But that mother would not die and leave her baby behind. She was a doctor–a psychiatrist– a rich woman, belonging to a family of rich people. She was in her mid thirties but her baby was her first child, younger than Sarah’s baby.
She was caught on two occasions before her actual suicide, as she left a $45 000.00 whatever brand the car, in a parking lot, and went wandering strangely around the subway station with her baby.
On the second occasion the police took her home to her family–her husband and others; but the family ignored her strange behavior, until she managed to get away from them again, with her baby. She went into one of those subway stations in Toronto, during the quiet hours, when she would not be noticed, and she jump unto the train track, with her baby, when she heard the train was approaching. The baby died instantly, but she survived for few a days at the hospital, and then she died.
An Indian man did the same thing. Suicidal, because of severe depression, he took his young son with him and he jumped onto the train track; both him and his son died together.
What I am pointing out is that I have never heard of people having depressing that causes them to kill other people, especially their own innocent children, and continue to live. Even the suicide bombers are people who actually want to die themselves; so most of the time they are cowards instead of heroes.
I have heard of a lot of murder- suicide. People wanting to die, but they do not want to live their loved ones behind. And so they kill their loved ones first–wives, children, mother, father, and so on–and they make sure that they are dead after they commit the murders.
In general, people with severe depression always kill, or desire to kill themselves, living their friends and loves ones baffled, because they never noticed that the person was suffering emotionally. Depression is a sickness that most people do not know they are suffering from until they are very late with the illness. But still for all depression and mental illness is not the same. I have suffered from mild depression, never did I feel like I was crazy. That is why it is so hard to notice the signs of depression in another person, PPD or what else.
If medical professions cannot find that Sarah is a person with a mind in complete malfunction, then I cannot see her killing her children for no other reasons but wicked selfishness and rebellion. I cannot see Sarah knowing her own person in the smallest measure, and to find it in her heart to destroy her two little innocent children the way she did it–one after the other or together. I am saying that PPD could cause Sarah to take her children’s life along with hers, not theirs alone.
The only other explanation for what Sarah did, is that she was driven by an extremely strong demonic force of her human mind. Driven by this force, Sarah would not have known herself, neither her own children, as she committed this act. Again I believe that Sarah can tell us what happened to her and in her mind on that day. But we have to have wisdom to listen to her and to discern from the words she speaks.
That is why we must call on Almighty God for Him to manifest fear justice in this case. We must hold our heads together to believe that only God can judge this situation. And whatever the outcome, we will also have to accept, that it was indeed a judgment directly from God.

*If they were up at the wii hours of the morning and she lost control of her anger and act out of a rage but no evident to show cause the neighbour would have heard something a person in rage do not act with propostion like this crime was committed

I have a few questions. Yes it is true that ppd exists but hold on:
1. Does Sarah have a history of psychological problems of any kind?
2. Any close relatives of Sarah has been diagnosed with any mental illness?
3. Who evaluated her and why was this done so quickly?
4. What were the surrounding issues that have led up to that horrendous crime?
5. Was she remorseful or shows signs that she was well aware of her act or she pretended she has no idea what she did, furthermore, she has been under heavy medication thus, she is in psycholand?
6. If she is truly insane then she is treated, what happens then? Is she freed after Dominicans have ‘forgotten’ this horrendous crime?
7. What about justice for two innocent precious little girls? Will there be any justice for them?
8. If she is tried in a court of law for murder, will she be given bail thus be released?
My people I can go on and on. The Dominican system is not working my people. As I mentioned in my comments before regarding Sarah, if she is insane may Allah forgive you but if you did this on purpose Sarah may Allah deal with you as He sees fit. You should try that technique in Iran and you would see what time it is Sarah if you are truly guilty.

There is an excuse for everything under the sun. No one wants to be held accountable for their misdeeds anymore. What makes it worst is: You have the vultures perching on the ledges waiting to line their deep pockets by making all sorts of excuses for the accused. Their intent is to create so many grey areas with their intellectual and pseudo-intellectual mumbo/jumbo that lawyers, law enforcement, and ordinary citizens are suspended in the vortex of follow-the-donkey. All you needed was for one quack to say that this woman suffered from a psychological imbalance. That, in and of itself, seems to validate the excuse of murdering two innocent children.
The sad part is, you have a whole bunch of Dominicans jumping on this quack’s band wagon, and holding up the banner in the name of PPD. The reality is, this woman was completely sane. However, Dominicans find it hard to believe that a person could commit such a heinous crime, so they are all making excuses for her. Could it simply be that this woman hated her life, was completely insecure, and felt that he children was a hindrance; and therefore, murdered them?
Now all a person has to do when he/she is going through a difficult moment in his/her life is to do something foolish, and cry under the banner of temporary insanity. We all go through difficult moments in our lives, but we do not turn around and murder our children.

If i was the child-murderer’s lawyer I’d be real overjoyed to learn of this program on Q95..Matter of fact I’d be wondering why I didn’t suggest the program myself!
It’d be just what I need to start influencing the minds of the pool of future jurors when this case eventually goes to trial (if it ever does)..
All signs point towards this woman getting off easy…We’ve all heard the expression “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned” yet..
We have a ‘doctor’ immediately after a crime without even spending some days properly evaluating the ‘patient’ rushing to conclude that it’s PPD..
We have police who were apparently reluctant to press charges so that the facts can come out in court..
Then you have bleeding hearts on DNO even b4 the funeral already declaring that she is forgiven…

If i were the prosecutor in this case I would be mindful of all this hype surrounding the physical attributes and celebrity of the accused and i would also focus on the information out there on such conditions. I would find expert witnesses from outside our society to analyze the youtube videos and observations of the accused whilst at the hospital.

Postpartum Psychosis Signs
Although the onset of symptoms can occur at anytime within the first three months after giving birth, women who have postpartum psychosis usually develop symptoms within the first two to three weeks after delivery. Postpartum psychosis symptoms usually appear quite suddenly; in 80% of cases, the psychosis occurs three to 14 days after a symptom-free period.
Signs of postpartum psychosis include:

Delusions
Illogical thoughts
Insomnia

Who Is At Risk?
Women with a personal history of psychosis, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia have an increased risk of developing postpartum psychosis. Likewise, women who have a family history of psychosis, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia have a greater chance of developing the disorder. Additonally, women who have had had a past incidence of postpartum psychosis are between 20% and 50% more likely of experiencing it again in a future pregnancy.
Causes of Postpartum Psychosis
Experts aren’t exactly sure why postpartum psychosis happens. However, they do offer a variety of explanations for the disorder, with a woman’s changing hormones being at the top of their list. Other possible reasons or contributing factors include a lack of social and emotional support; a low sense of self-esteem due to a woman’s postpartum appearance; feeling inadequate as a mother; feeling isolated and alone; having financial problems; and undergoing a major life change such as moving or starting a new job.

Please let’s be careful here about passing judgment on such a sensitive and touching issue. No matter what is said or done there can be no winners here… so unfortunate. May God continue to give strength to all those who are currently undergoing testing times in their lives at this point in time.

can someone tell me please who diagnosed this women? yes there is ppd, but every precaution should be taken that a cold blooded murderer is not let off free.
