Shillingford granted $10,000 bail after successful appeal against conviction

A white pitbull.

Denny Shillingford, whose seven-year jail sentence was overthrown earlier this week when he successfully appealed it at the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court of Appeal, was been granted bail on his own recognisance in the sum of $10,000 this afternoon.

He will however spend a final night at the Stockfarm State Prison pending the completion of the necessary paper work for his release.

Shillingford had been convicted by a jury in May for causing grievous bodily harm to Davidson Joseph by  instructing his dog to attack him.

READ FULL STORY ON THE TRIAL

A re-trial at the high court has been ordered before a different high court judge.

The incident took place in the early morning of September 24, 2009 at St Joseph.

Shillingford had been charged for murder with other individuals but that charge was dropped some time ago, according to a lawyer (Dawn Yearwood-Stewart) who assisted him during today’s proceeding.

“As he stands, there is nothing to keep him prisoner,” Yearwood-Stewart said in his defence.

Conditions of his bail are that he report to the St Joseph police station on Mondays,Wednesdays and Fridays and not interfere with any witnesses in the matter.

He will forfeit this bail if he breaches any of these conditions.

Again I say, if you check the records, you will see that violent criminals get off with a slap on the wrist. Yet, if you are caught with a marijuana cigarette, you will do ten years. Our justice system does not even believe in repeat offenders. I hope he chooses his next victim wisely and yes, he will have another one. Why? Because once again he has proven that any criminal can beat our justice system. All of this just to try and discredit the only judge we have with the testitcular fortitude to deal with criminals.
