CASTRIES, St Lucia, CMC – Jamaica-born magistrate, Ann-Marie Smith, who was shot by armed assailants earlier in the week, was discharged from hospital late Saturday, as the Bar Association called on the government to flex its muscle to deal with the crime problem gripping the island.

Smith was treated for bullet wounds to her thigh, leg and buttocks. Upon her release, she was taken to an undisclosed location.

Eyewitnesses reported that the magistrate, who has gained a reputation in St Lucia for being tough on criminals, was entering her car to go to work when she was attacked by two masked gunmen who jumped from nearby bushes. Smith’s five year-old daughter was also in the car at the time of the incident.

How sad. That poor liitle child will be traumatized for life, seeing her mother gunned down like that. Thank God Madam Magistrate is recovering well. She went to school and studied hard and excelled to become a magistrate. She is serving civil society not in her native Jamaica but in a foreign country, St. Lucia. These ruthless and brazen criminals have allowed demonic influences to take hold of them and sink their conscience and behavior to a state lower than aninamls.

God help all law abiding citizens when the wicked thugs turn on the people who adjudicate and enforce the law. As much as I would like to believe that this was a random act of violence which is just as wicked in itself, I am pretty convinced that the magistrate was targeted. I wish Madam Magistrate God’s blessings for a speedy and full recovery and continued success in her personal and professional life.
