Son of former Dominica PM charged with murder

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – Three men, including the son of a former  Dominica prime minister, are due to appear in court later on Wednesday charged with the November 6 murder of a man, whose bullet riddled body was found near a beach.

Police have laid charges against Joel Seraphine, whose father, Oliver J. Seraphine, served as interim prime minister from 1979-1980.

Seraphine 26, along with George Thomas, 34, from the Dominican Republic and Antiguan Andre Nibbs, 30, have been accused of murdering Clinton Mannix, 37, whose body was found in a pool of blood with multiple gunshot wounds.

Last week, Seraphine was convicted and fined EC$40,000 (US$14,981) after he pleaded guilty to being in possessing of a firearm and three rounds of ammunition.

Magistrate Joan Fung had ordered that he be deported once he pays the fine or completes a two-year prison term.

Why the hell are you people talking about a mistake. When you take a person out there house under false pretense and kill them. You meant to kill him…. I hope and pray that everyday u wake up and go to sleep u see his face… You are a very heartless person… Only God know what’s best for you…. Cause if I had anything to say what should happen is you should spend the rest of your life in jail

Sankey, this is the family this time. Just stumbled on this and I know exactly who you are, you know this is one of my many talents.
Why do you think that if the post is not about dragging OJ in the mud, it must be from the family?

Here’s my position as a very close family member: a man is innocent until proven guilty and if it is proven that Joel is guilty, he has to face the punishment, period! OJ being his father or Skerrit being his paweh is irrelevant. In the meantime and beyond we’re giving him all the support that we can, just as anyone (ex PM or not) would do for their own.

We are fervently praying for our Kin Joel and just as much for the family of the victim.

My people, be safe, be well.

What is disgusting? some of you hypocrites praising a man who was involve of another life being taken away. it does not matter whose child it is but we as a nation should not be seen to be glorifying what Joel did, and even have the nerve to say he was O J’s son.

True to say O J did not raise his kids to be that way, but why do we as parents like to condone the wrong our kids do. So if you find your kid telling a fat lie, you as a parent knowing it’s a lie, will stand idle by and allow that kid to lie. how is this going to help them be honest human beings in today’s society.

Am not gloryfying what joel did. this young man had many issues, and the family can come here in disguise and defend him but the truth will always come out, and his sister have to learn to stop criticising and throwing words for others, when they all know it have skeletons living in their closet.

Is behind story that does have story…more will come and prayers alone will not be enough. A close examination and look at personal change has to be embedded with those prayers.

Papa met JOEL boy when i heard that it brought literal tears to my eyes. Is that the same person i went to school with. Boy…………. how time has changed. I do hope that this incident serves as an eye opener for you and may God’s mercies fall upon you and your family as you all go through this. Its time to grow up and live by the sound principles that you were taught!!!!!!

Next you all will say Skerrit made him do it?
I feel bad for him but worst for the other family who lost their son.
Our people need to behave themselves, whether it be at home or abroad.
Find something creative to do with those hands God gave us instead of taking the
innocent lives he created. It is high time our people stop that shooting and killing.
If they like killing that much they should volunteer for some army somewhere
    around the world.

I am appalled at some of the comments being made here about this young man, such as his making a mistake. ………. As a matter of fact, if you read Article carefully you will see that when he was picked up it was actually for a firearm.. offense, he pleaded guilty on the charge. ( Last week, Seraphine was convicted and fined EC$40,000 (US$14,981) after he pleaded guilty to being in possessing of a firearm and three rounds of ammunition). …. Those of you who are talking about him not pulling the trigger, please be informed that he does not have to pull it to be guilty of murder. This is the problem with or world today, we are trying to make everything right but that is wrong. There is something called justice and we must stand for that which is just. Young people must be made to know that the idea is not to try and live a life of illegality to get what they want in life. Everyone must consider the consequence of his or her action before taking it, only fools fail to do so. if it was his first time, i would have been more easy on him, but he meant to live the life he did. I live in Antigua and I don’t want the good i do here as an ambassador of my country, to be erased by the irresponsible actions of few who won’t do meaning work but instead try to live big by illegal means. God endorsed hard work and that is what i endorse. Dominicans have always maintain a good name in another mans land.

WE DONT KNOW WHO PULLED THE TRIGGER WHAT U DO KNOW IS THAT JOEL AND THE TWO OTHER GUYS WERE CHARGED WITH MURDER…………. JOEL NEED NOT TO PULL A TRIGGER AND KILLED SOMEONE TO GET CHARGED WITH MURDER…… THERES MURDER IN THE FIRST DEGREE AND MURDER IN THE SECOND DEGREE SO LET US SEE WHAT HAPPENS……… WE DONT KNOW THE FACTS SURROUNDING THE CIRCUMSTANCES… BUT WE ARE POINTING FINGERS AT JOEL AND ONE ANOTHER…….. IT IS ALLEGED…… THE COURT HAS TO PROVE HE DID IT OR IF HE WAS INVOLVED…. IT IS JUST A SAD STORY TO HEAR WHAT HE IS INVOLVED IN SO FAR BEING CHARGED FOR MURDER…… I EXPECT SOME PPL TO FEEL SORRY FOR HIM AND SOME NOT TOO…….NOTHING WRONG IF U FEEL SORRY FOR SOMEONE AS LONG AS U DO NOT PUSH YOUR HAND IN FIRE FOR HIM…….

well yes ca…..tears comin out in my eyes……ehlas is all i can say….i really dont care wat nobody has to say joel is one of ours and we will stand by him thru this….not for his actions but for wat he goin thru….it is not easy as family members to watch ur familly go thru this…nobody wants bad for their children….and joel is the father’s child like it or not….and HE WILL GET HIM THRU IT…HE WILL FORGIVE HIM…i agree with the person who said that OJ did not raise him that way….OJ and ma oj did not raise their children that way,…..they are god fearing christians esp ma oj who has great faith…joel decided to chose a path that is not good for him he lived a life that was dangerous and it eventually caught up with him……DON’T WE ALL??? darling we are with u every step of the way and we are praying that the worse doesnt happen for u….we dont want to see u fall at all…..we love you……and i can promise u as soon as u get out of this mess u will get lots of lectures i just pray that this time u listen to us :)

    you all disgust me

  21. confused
    December 31, 2009

why are some people talking about this like this guy made a mistake? are we now suppose to say that all those who commit crime don’t know what they are about or what they are doing?

simply put, a mistake is when you do something and you are unaware of the fact that it may be wrong. But how can u tell me that killing someone, dumping their body and still have the audacity to keep the gun is a mistake! What message are we sending to the younger ones when we justify the actions of this one young man by calling it a mistake? and then we complain about the increase in crime? this really confuses me!

I honestly don’t care who your father or your mother is, we should condemn his actions right away if he did the crime. Yes it will be hurtful for the family and I can understand that we have to sympathize with them but like us, the family has to accept the fact that if he did the crime he must pay the time. He must take responsibility for his actions and that is what good parents would ensure.

In such a case we can’t be one sided or bias because he is a Dominican or a son of a former PM, there are two families hurting right now, that of the guy who was killed and that of the one who committed the crime.

in life we all have choices, that is what sets us apart as human beings….as free agents….we have the choice to do good and we have a choice to do bad. what saddens me is that this man seemed to have made the wrong choices. What we must now seek to do is look at what might have lead him down this path so that we can speak to our children and encourage them be wise in the choices they make!

I am deeply sadden about the loss of this life but I hope this experience will help Joel to grow up and learn right from wrong. Whether he be guilty or innocent I am not to judge, but there must be reasons why he is charged in this case. As someone who went to school with Joel and knew him quite well, I am not surprised but sadden. When you are raised to believe that you are above the law and have no respect for authority, this is what happens. I hope that he will come out of this a better man…truly. My prayers are with you Joel.

For the hypocrites out there who are criticizing my statement, let me make it clear that I DO NOT rejoice in anyone’s downfall and I am not in the least bit critical of OJ Seraphine’s upbringing of his son, which I am sure he did his very best to have brought him up in the right way (In fact the young man may well be innocent- let’s await the result of the case). We must however be fair to ALL our fellowmen (including Mr. Skerrit) and must learn not to go about castigating and passing judgement on others, even when we do not have the evidence to back up our accusations. That is the lesson I want us all to learn. Unfortunately for OJ Seraphine, he is learning this the hard way. I MAKE NO APOLOGIES FOR MY STATEMENT!!!

Lester shut the hell up we all make mistakes, but there comes a time when we have to pay the piper back. And I know u have made your fair share of mistakes we all have. He will learn eventually that life isn’t a bed of roses. But that doesn’t give the right to anyone to bad talk him and his family no matter who they are. Just like your mother would have an aching heart if it were u in this situation, so is his mom. Grow up people life is to short for this this bad talk and nonsense put yourselves in the shoes of his parents if you are parents. Way worse crimes have been commited in dca and abroad and we should be concerned not critical of the person and his family…
