St Lucian fined for ganja

A St Lucian national was fined $500 for possession of cannabis to be paid forthwith or sent to jail for one month.

Finbar Greenidge pleaded guilty to that charge when he appeared before Magistrate Bernard Pacquette at a Roseau Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

According to the facts revealed by Police Prosecutor Sergeant Davidson Cadette, at about 5:30 pm on September 11, 2014 police officers of the drug squad were on duty in Massacre when they noticed a blue vehicle and became suspicious.

At the time Greenidge was a passenger on that vehicle.

Police stopped the vehicle and asked if there were any illegal drugs inside. The response was “no.”

A search was conducted in the vehicle and a brown package containing 38 grams of cannabis was found under the passenger seat.

An amount of 6,100 Euro was also found which was taken to customs for investigations.

The defendant told the court he was unaware that one could be arrested for possession of a small quantity of the drug.

“In St Lucia the police will hold me with 15 grams of marijuana and they would let me go. I didn’t know it was different in Dominica,” he explained.

He then apologized for having the drugs in his possession and promised the court, “It will not happen again.”

The defendant was granted six months stay on island and so far has only spent six weeks.

This is laughable. Our St.Lucian brother made more sense than the police and the judge. Oh come on Pacquette we used to smoke marijuana together after school. We all know there’s no such thing as drug squad in Dominica, it’s the marijuana squad.

They sometimes find a sitting duck of hard drugs but that’s never what they go after, which is why Dominica is swimming in cocaine and crack. Just wait till meth hits our streets with your drug squad which is only a marijuana squad. Only bent on inflicting pain and suffering on marijuana smokers for over 40 years, similar to the Nazi gestapos. This is sickening, old fashioned and out of touch, and some of you smoke cigarettes. Relax on the marijuana, it’s the right thing to do,.
